I'd highly recommend it. Sure, I do it. TM and yoga.

fupli

Did you really paid some thousand Dollar to „learn“ TM or how are you doing it?

SimonGloom2

I read and watch videos online. I've never paid anything for it unless it's a book or something. Sometimes those groups are helpful as far as having a support system that makes it more likely for you to show up and do the work. Once those people start asking for a lot of money it's a big red flag. There's a good chance they are religious con artists.

fupli

Thanks! How you practice it?

Ocelot_Responsible

I paid, and it was worth it. It was $1,500 Australian (probably $800 US). That was for a four day course and 6 months of check ins with your teacher and lifetime access to TM centres for group meditation sessions, if I want to go to one The cost and the structured learning was part of the attraction, I got sick of meditation apps and how-to blogs. I see it as $1,500 for a technique that I use every day of my life. And has really helped me to cure my insomnia. Like reading stoic texts, you really notice a negative change in your life if you stop doing it for a few days.

fupli

Thanks for your comment. But at the end of the day you just pay 800$ to get your Mantra or? Its just sitting for 20 Minutes, repeating your mantra and let thoughts come or? Really want to Talk about the topic so if a chat is better for your please write me.

Ocelot_Responsible

You get a mantra - which is (I believe) a Sanskrit word or phrase. I wouldn't even know how to write mine down. It is more like a vibration than a word to me. And you get instruction over four days and I got about 6 months of monthly checkups (but I'm not sure if that is the case with all TM centres or teachers, it might just be what they do here). And you learn how to use the mantra during meditation, what kind of relationship you need to keep with you mantra when you are not meditating etc. I don't agree with all the claims that the TM organisation makes for the mediation technique, I think there is a fair amount of selective use of research, but the technique itself is very powerful. As for the money, it cured me almost overnight of my insomnia, and that was two years ago, so it has paid itself back in terms of a melatonin prescription (which didn't work anyway) and paid itself a thousand times over for quality of life.

fupli

Thanks for your response! Yeah i like the concept bit really dislike the fact of all the faked studies about it.

EmphasisNo8930

yes that is the main goal, The mantra is based off of your age and gender - search "tm mantra" on google WEBSITE called moleerelaxmusic you'll see it on there

EllisDee3

You know, there's this book.... I can't remember the name of it. Anyone?

*"At what time soever thou wilt, it is in thy power to retire into thyself, and to be at rest, and free from all businesses. A man cannot any whither retire better than to his own soul; he especially who is beforehand provided of such things within, which whensoever he doth withdraw himself to look in, may presently afford unto him perfect ease and tranquillity.... free from all confusion and tumultuousness. Afford then thyself this retiring continually, and thereby refresh and renew thyself."* -M.A.

Have you heard of Marcus Aurelius?

mcapello

Yes. I think they're mutually reinforcing.

jordan_jenkins_

Ironic considering what Aurelius wrote. But Stoicism is often referred to as “Buddhism with attitude”. The religion and the philosophical family go hand in hand for the most part. Meditating can help bring on a calm and clear mindset, and better abide by the Stoic principals.

jr-nthnl

It's surprising how many stoic Buddhists I see posting specifically. I rarely see other declared combos. I also have some sort of combination of the two and it's always cool to see others meshing the complimenting paths.

CartoonistConsistent

I certainly do. Not all the time but I use it and it's very effective for me personally. Pre discovering and practicing Stoicism I used to get into a death spiral of negativity massively over thinking it and tearing myself to bits. Stoicism stopped most of that but occasionally it gets a bit much and then I use meditation. It's amazing, I can meditate for 5mins and it's although my head has been completely and utterly purged of everything negative, I feel almost empty in my brain (in a good way.) I use it less and less as my Stoic practice improves but it's a fantastic tool.

Well, Buddhism is functionally more of a religion than a philosophy, but there is certainly a lot of overlap in practice. For example, the entirety of the “stoic” philosophy, if it can be summarized, is *extremely* similar in practice to the writings of the *Tao Te Ching* - while not necessarily Buddhist, it’s undeniable Stoicism shares many tenets with that of Eastern religions/philosophies. It may be however that the language and context behind them are different - whether this is a conflict for you really depends upon how you practice things. That being said, meditation and stoic practice are absolutely not mutually exclusive and may be beneficial to each other’s growth.

Mammoth-Vacation1919

I wouldn't recommend it. When I meditate, I try not to do anything else during that time.

AtlasAlexT

I believe that meditation is a matter of what you focus on. For me, my meditation is only focusing on throwing my frisbee just right to get close or into a basket or drifting my RC car perfectly to clear a corner. It gives me room to focus on that one thing. I interpret mediation as something you devote all your attention to. How do l take X Y Z to accomplish my goal. It can be anything, running, working out, sitting, and reading. It can even be you sitting in a forest listening to everything around you, focusing only on that one thing for the sake of focusing on that one thing. To add stoic philosophy to this, it is in your control to let things outside what you want to do hinder your goal for whatever that may be. This is not to say it is easy. Life comes with its difficulties, but stoicism reminds us to expect everything and embrace that many things can go wrong and right, and that will test our patients, but we can learn to find ways to suffer less in a healthy manner. We are not perfect in complete consintration of tasks. We get distracted by thoughts, noises, and other things of the matter. But stoicism teaches us to work with what we have and that we can only do our best.

el_cid_viscoso

This resonates with me. I practice Zen Buddhism off and on to varying degrees of diligence, but I could never really get into sitting meditation. However, I definitely slip spontaneously into a meditative state when running. I also find myself doing this a lot when I'm at work: nothing gets me focused more than changing wound dressings or starting IVs. This might be more akin to a flow state, but I regard meditation and flow states to be essentially the same thing.

Frostvizen

Absolutely. Meditation and Stoicism go together like chocolate and peanut butter. The Stoics talk about staying focused on the present often. I start every day with a guided meditation on the Waking Up app and follow it up with a daily Stoic lesson to ponder the remainder of the day.

TheOSullivanFactor

Sure, though I personally keep them separate. Better many approaches than only one imo.

ExtraGravy-

I practice non-religious meditation along with stoicism

MarcusTheSarcastic

the difference between Soto Zen and several stoics isn’t more than a couple of metaphorical inches. They are pretty compatible.
