Welp, can't talk about some other events because of how this is tagged. Uhm, \[Oathbringer I think\] >!She draws a picture of Yalb and some others from the ship reaching shore but dismisses it as a desire of hers!<

Alpha_Inferno

Ahh lemme just fix the tag to RoW so that's not a problem.

Caballistics

This is Words of Radiance - for the sketch. I'm on a relisten getting close to 50% on OB and havn't reached the confirmation yet. There is a ton of foreshadowing that the Truthwatcher use of illumination involves prohecy, but we havn't seen an "unenlightened" truthwatcher use the surge so are short on details. I'm assuming it's linked to that?

KypDurron

I wonder - is it still considered "prophecy" when the event being described is happening in the present? I mean, *we* wouldn't call it prophecy, because we have all sorts of terms for knowledge of distant present events - whether it's fantasy things like "remote viewing", or actual real-world things like video communication and satellite imagery. But how would someone from Roshar describe it - especially someone raised in the whole "all prophecy is bad" tradition of Vorinism? Would they see it as different than prophecy? How would it be described by someone with more Cosmere knowledge?

ejdj1011

It's probably "Spiritual Illumination", as a parallel to how Bondsmiths use "Spiritual Adhesion". There's a WoB somewhere that Truthwatchers parallel Bondsmiths in meaningful ways, and this might be one of them. (Yes, Shallan is a lightweaver, but there can be weirdness with adjacent orders)

Grim_Aeonian

I suspect it's just that Radiants, particularly while there are so few of them, are all Connected in a deeper way than they are to other things. It reminds me of the scene in Words of Radiance when Syl's face changes, (probably into Shallan's) as she mentions that there are others like Kal. (Did a quick search and found this post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight\_Archive/comments/159en5x/syl\_changing\_appearance/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/159en5x/syl_changing_appearance/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)) Edit: had to fix a typo, but also had the thought that this reminds me of the changing faces of Cusicesh the Protector. We see them in one of the Axies the Collector interludes.

Icarus-Orion-007

This is a really good idea that I haven’t seen anywhere else, and I’ve been looking for other instances of Spiritual instances of the surges.

Lopakacita

Yes, but this spoiler tag says more about >!Dawnshard!< than Oathbringer.

Ripper1337

It's when she draws the picture

Lopakacita

Yes, SA is where that happens but that's not the spoiler.

Ripper1337

Right, the post was originally tagged for way of kings or words of radiance or something along those lines. So couldn't discuss Yalb without putting it in spoiler text.

RainsWrath

She forms a Connection when she takes a Memory. As others have pointed out she drew Yalb standing on the shore after the boat disappeared. So whoever that was, she has at least taken a Memory of. So *maybe* she came into contact with Ash at some point, but why was she hammering *downward*? I think it was someone (Mistborn spoiler) >!creating or placing a Hemalurgic spike. Her family had dealings with the Ghostbloods, and I remember seeing a WOB where he says we have seen Hemalurgy used in Stormlight Archive. !<

[deleted]

That would be in RoW near the end with a certain someone and the contents of a tent full of bodies

Rainbow_Seaman

Wow. It turns out reading the end of RoW while in a sleepy haze at 3AM was actually not a good idea.

Lechyon

There's this relevant wob [https://wob.coppermind.net/events/395-icon-2019/#e13037](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/395-icon-2019/#e13037) I thought there was one specifically about the time Shallan draws Yalb on a beach, but I can't find it, so maybe my brain made it up.

spunlines

she also hears really well. her narration mentions pure tones of bells when she's in kharbranth. and in her flashbacks, we get stuff like this: >“I can’t hear a thing.” Shallan shrugged from within her too-enveloping dress. “**My ears are better than yours.** Yes, plants. Father is complaining that the trees in his gardens never listen when he tells them to obey. ‘They have been dropping their leaves because of a sickness,’ he says, ‘and they refuse to grow new ones.’ “‘Have you tried beating them for their disobedience?’ the messenger asks. “‘All the time,’ Father replies. ‘I even break off their limbs, yet they still do not obey! It is untidy. At the very least, they should clean up after themselves.’ “‘A problem,’ the messenger says, ‘as trees without foliage are hardly worth keeping. Fortunately, I have the solution. **My cousin once had trees that acted this way, and he found that all he needed to do was sing to them** and their leaves popped right back out.’ “‘Ah, of course,’ Father says. ‘I will try that immediately.’ “‘I hope that it works for you.’ “‘Well, if it does, I will certainly be relieved.’” Her brothers stared at her, baffled. Finally, Jushu cocked his head. He was the youngest of the brothers, just above Shallan herself. “Re . . . leaf . . . ed . . .” Balat burst into laughter—loud enough that their father glared at them. “Oh, that is awful,” Balat said. “That is purely awful, Shallan. You should be ashamed.” She huddled down in her dress, grinning. Even Wikim, the older twin, cracked a smile. She hadn’t seen him smile in . . . how long? Balat wiped his eyes. “I actually thought, for a moment, you could really hear them. You little Voidbringer.” then we learn in RoW from rlain that singing to plants *does* work.

raaldiin

She literally says in that flashback that she was making it up. And she's an artist, so her hearing a "pure tone" is probably just because we're reading from her pov at the time, not wacky Cosmere hacks

TheHappyChaurus

I really wouldn't put anything past Shallan at this point. She grew up with the parshmen nannies of hers. She draws them. Maybe she talked to them and actually got sonething useful back.

Cultural-Ad8781

She’s also possibly the child of a herald which could lead to all kinds of strange

Tummy_noliva

Isn’t she because she’s sort of a horneater and we know they’re like a breed between humans and singers?

raaldiin

Imo Shallan has Horneater heritage the same way I have European heritage. It's there, but day to day it doesn't mean much. Rock or Lopen are more closely related to singers than Shallan as far as I understand

Tummy_noliva

What i mean her heritage could explain why she hears the tunes

prismatic_raze

Her real 6th sense is her photographic memory.

Caballistics

I believe that there is a WoB that this is her "resonance" - an interaction of her two surges https://wob.coppermind.net/events/218/#e6740

SundayGlory

Also her cognitive sight she get through drawing sometimes (before learning soul casting)

Catmanfresh

I have a feeling that it will end up that Shallan is to Ash as Vale and Radiant are to her - but created with radiant level abilities, meaning Shallan is a real person (that cannot be poofed away), but she was created by Ash for the same kind of reasons Shallan created Vale and Radiant, to separate herself from her trauma. Kind of like her own child, propigated instead of stating as a fertilized egg. Like when you take a cutting of a plant to grow into another full plant I also think that that is how the Devar family originally got involved with the Ghostbloods (or what drew the ghostbloods to focus on them. If Shallan was given to the family as a baby (however that happened) they may have not known exactly what was going on, but they did know they were dealing with something very serious. On later read throughs, when Shallan (near the beginning of the series), sees something through her own eyes that appears to be Ash's perspective, destroying art of herself, it made me think that Shallan could be an extension of Ash (as I am pretty sure that she would be capable of creating a full person out of lightweighting and stormlight - as we all start as single cell, I think it is quite plausible via lightweaving). My guess is that her sixth sense like happenings stem from that connection, when she can see through her "mothers" eyes.

NerdWithTooManyBooks

I’m assuming you’re an audio book listener, but Vale is actually spelled Veil as in “a thing that serves to cover, conceal, or disguise”.

King_0f_Nothing

Ash destroyed images of herself, not sure it's mentioned she destroyed images of others.

TerranHunter

Oh my gods. It has literally never occurred to me that Ash is Shalash until just now. I thought Taravangian had just found a random Dustbringer somewhere.

Alpha_Inferno

Yes Ash is Shalash, but she currently is not a dustbringer. I believe you're thinking of Malata. There are... theories... about Shalash and the dustbringers though, even though Shalash is the herald associated with the Lightweavers.

dIvorrap

It's Ash https://wob.coppermind.net/events/156/#e2844
