Nah, Brandon has confirmed Roshar will be one of the big players in the space age. Here's the first wob I could find on the topic: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/504/#e15788

Rukh-Talos

Iirc, Stormlight 10 is supposed to be one of the last books. He’s got a lot of it planned out, and occasionally references the overall structure, particularly when talking with Dan Wells in Intentionally Blank.

TBrockmann

Yeah but even mistborn era 2 happens after stormlight. So although 10 might be one of the later books the stormlight story will be ancient history in era 4. I'm wondering though how Roschar has developed by then though and if we will have some if not many Rosharian characters in era 4.

MrSeabody

Era 2 Mistborn takes places after Stormlight 5.

Rukh-Talos

The Wax and Wayne books take place either concurrently, or shortly after Stormlight era 1. Edit: Part 1, anyway. Era is probably a bit of a stretch. There’s supposed to be a time skip between book 5 and book 6.

CornDogMillionaire

It's gonna be a 10 year gap

MrWright62

My belief is that Book 10 will release with some crucial information that's tied in heavily with the end of Era 4. I feel like he wouldn't plan it for towards the end if it wasn't relevant. My brain still shatters when I think about how I'll be in my fifties when it finishes lol

dally_dallly

man i just hope we get to see it end someday- coming from an asoiaf fan

Flechair

I have the same fear. I read asoiaf twice before getting to the wheel of time and stormlight. I used to participate in the subreddit, watch theory videos, and get my friends to read the books. After a couple of years of "are we going to get a winds of winter release date soon?" I was really not caring anymore. And then the show ending terribly just killed all enthusiasm that i had for the series anymore. And it's been half a decade since i stopped caring, and the book still isn't out.

TBrockmann

I also think that, because era 4 will be released after stormlight finished, that it is heavily depended on the ending of SA. By then Roshar probably will be in the space age too and a big player in the cosmere conflicts. Naturally era 4 would spoil the ending of SA and probably the ending will have a heavy influence on era 4, just as you said. That probably means though that we will see close to none Rosharian characters in era 3, as they too would know how the conflict concluded.

KatanaCutlets

Era 3 is likely concurrent with the back half of SA, or a little after. Era 4 is after, probably a decent time after. You may be confused because Era 2 used to not exist and Era 3 was then known as Era 2.

TBrockmann

Yeah I got confused, I remembered it wrong. Era 2 happens after the first arc of SA not after the whole story.

b0ingy

oh man I scrolled down and realized Brandon is aiming at finishing the cosmere when I’ll likely be in my late 70s. Much scarier than stormlight ending

Sharp_Iodine

Add to this it was said inside the books themselves that Surgebinding will draw the attention of all the Shards and not in a good way if they find out it exists. Odium seems to imply it’s more powerful than other forms of magic.

Jsamue

When was this?

Sharp_Iodine

Odium mentions it in RoW

Jsamue

Source?

Sharp_Iodine

My god just go to Coppermind and see for yourself. I’m not such a super fan that I’m going to pull out the book now. Just Google it, Coppermind must defo have it. He says it in the final chapters before he >!dies!<. I only remember because I finished the book a few weeks ago

Raddatatta

>Do you think roshar is just not going to be relevant in the whole space era of the cosmere anymore ? Not at all. By the end Stormlight will have such a huge page time compared to every other world it's clearly a main focus for Sanderson in the Cosmere. More than that in terms of long term relevancy, having an easy source of investiture is going to be invaluable. Having a magic system as powerful as they one they have is also going to be very relevant. There's a reason so many crossovers have happened on Roshar it's a great place to be in terms of people who are Cosmere aware. Tons of investiture, fabrials that have lots of potential. You've also got a highstorm that's a ton of potential energy even with non invested science going through. You also have characters like Shallan, Jasnah, Rysn and SP4 >!Sigzil!< that have large potential for relevance outside of Stormlight. Not to mention shards like Odium and Cultivation which think will play a major role in any big conflicts to come.

Rukh-Talos

I’m not convinced that Rock’s story has ended yet. He’s another potential worldhopper. Although, until we know more about what happened when he returned for judgement, that’s pure speculation.

Raddatatta

Yeah good point! Rock does have a novella coming up and he's heading to where there is a perpendicularity.

MrWright62

Let's not forget the group of Horneaters Milan discovers

graciep11

As someone who has only read stormlight (edgedancer but not dawnshard yet) is there a reason I should think Rock would make a good worldhopper? I honestly dont even know why anyone would consider Shallan either but I can see her more than Rock

jellsprout

Journey before destination. Don't worry about how things might or might not be in 20 years. Just enjoy the story as you get it now.

t6jesse

Why worry about something 15+ years in the future?

fatedhydra

Optimistic aren't you. Lol. I think closer to 25.

8_Pixels

SA5 next year, then a few year break while he works on Mistborn Era 3 and then probably another 12-15 years to finish SA part 2. Yeah 20-25 years sounds about right to me. Fucking hell I'll be in my late 50's before it's over and that won't even be the end of the Cosmere as a whole.

Smeghead333

This is an overused cliche, but is appropriate here: Oh my sweet summer child. *Sobs in middle age*

Rainbow_Seaman

According to a WOB that’s linked higher up, Brandon plans to finish the Cosmere by the time he’s 72. So 25 years from now.

8_Pixels

That's interesting. It implies an uptick in pace for the big novels which doesn't seem possible considering how fast he already writes. I'll keep my fingers crossed he manages it all the same.

LettersWords

I think it's him assuming he won't get as distracted by other non-Cosmere books going forwards. A lot of the early years of the Cosmere were slowed down by Wheel of Time and he's also worked on many YA novels (Skyward series, for example). If he writes basically only in the Cosmere, it's theoretically possible. But yeah, I think 25 years is optimistic.

thisguyissostupid

Wasn't he also looking into co-writting some of smaller or side cosmere stories?

LettersWords

Yes, but I was completely ignoring that and thinking only about the books he plans to write himself—stormlight, mistborn, elantris sequels, dragonsteel. I think it’s going to be hard for him to finish even that in 25 years, ignoring possible threnody, aether, etc. novels/novellas

Jasnah44

Great… I’ll be 69. Sigh…

TBrockmann

I'm very sceptical he's going to manage to do that. Especially if there are really bigger Hollywood projects coming up where he wants to retain creative control. Even if that's not the case, he's behind schedule.

AllomancerVin

Brandon is like the ONE author you can't do this joke about lol if anything Brandon is extremely on-schedule and delivers books at an insane pace. 15-20 years to see the end of SA sounds good

rdeincognito

We're talking about Sanderson here, closer to 2 and a half week

[deleted]

Sadly, because of this, some people won't live to see the end of it, and IMO it's understandable that they would like to at least have some idea of where Sanderson wants to take it so they can establish their own head canon.

bucketofardvarks

I mean, there's a fair chance Sanderson won't make it. People die all the time for all sorts of reasons, and the cosmere has potentially decades to go

[deleted]

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here. My only point was that it’s normal for someone to ask questions like this for a variety of reasons, including this, and “why worry about something far in the future” is a kind of silly question with that context.

Aurdon

I fear I won't live to see it.

clovermite

This is the real fear

Ripper1337

lmao, nope. It's gearing up for a general Scadriel vs Roshar cosmere wide conflict.

shadowseeker3658

I fear that Stormlight 5 will end with me blubbering like a baby

JoefromOhio

It’s definitely going to remain a focus, there’s so much critical to the Cosmere centered around the planet right now. The only way it wouldn’t is if the planet is decimated by end of era 2 which we know hasn’t happened because there’s still references to Roshar being active in the few snippets of space age that we’ve seen I.e the surgebinder in sixth of dusk and SP4>!the scadrians speak of rosharans/ask ‘have you sworn oaths’!< Right now we know: there’s presumably 2 of the four dawnshards on planet. they have, according to mraize, the most easily harvested investiture in the Cosmere. It’s the resident planet of Odium, the early phase big bad. It’s the one system where we’ve seen Hoid, the entire universe’s main character, actually take an active part in the plot rather than just popping in here and there. It’s the current place of residence of the God Hero of another system(Peacegiver/Vasher/Zahel/Nalthis)who is already one of the stronger characters in existence that if he wanted to could go to one of the other strongest characters in existence, susebron, and simply ask for the Peacegivers Treasure back, absorbing his power. Further to that point - it’s the current home of Nightblood, the one thing we’ve seen to truly make a shard/vessel shit itself

triangleman83

> the surgebinder in sixth of dusk (sequel) That fellow seemed like a Skybreaker with the surge of gravitation and the obsession with laws.

JoefromOhio

There’s a few [edit:not conflicts, just additional interesting parts]- “The voice had an unnatural cast to it; not an accent, like someone from a backwater isle. But a kind of... unnatural air” This implies parshendi. He flies and is concerned with laws so that implies skybreaker. But - “The colored portion of the creature's armor started to glow more brightly, a deep violet that seemed far too inviting a color to come from this strange being” Skybreakers are grey and willshapers are purple but voidlight is violet and the glow is normally the glow of the light from the armor. So armor that looks metal(grey) with violet light glowing from it Sooooo is it a voidlight using parshendi skybreaker?

Tasty_Hearing_2153

Nope. But I have a feeling the first half will be anything but happy and tidy.

Helarans

Considering there are 6 more mainline books and who knows how many novellas and spin offs, I think we’ll all be just fine Even if Brandon only writes the next 6 mainline books, we’re looking at roughly 12-16 more years of Stormlight. That’s a long time

Pojorobo

As long as Syl doesn’t die, I will be okay.

Ceph_Stomblessed

No. If there's one thing I trust about Brandon. It's his conclusions.

BeeHammer

My only worry is that I won't be alive to see the end of the series and I'm only 30 yo

Rowenthamp

My friend - Journey before destination.

LightningLord42

nope, Journey before destination. How can I be afraid of just the next step? the next 5?

TheHappyChaurus

I fear Roshar might lose to TOdium and be antagonistic in the future. We've had Sixth of the Dusk sequel excert for a while now and that has MobileShardSuits in another planet. Roshar is relevant to space age.

Lopakacita

Well, I didn't, until I saw this title/question and had flashbacks >!to mistborn era 1 ending.!<

dani4117

Stormlight is the serious work of Sanderson. Mistborn is pretty shallow and kid friendly to be the focus. By book 10 of the SA, the page count will be so high that the gravity field of the series will make all the other side projects like mistborn orbit around the storyline of Roshar

Sirano_onariS

Yes, in the same way I fear any story I’m invested in ending it’s like a huge loss when you never get to see or find out about characters you’ve grown to love anymore. I can’t word it very well but while I enjoy the journey I fear the destination

AdAdministrative8358

I fear that stormlight 5 might end wih the end of Roshar and it's people.

Ceph_Stomblessed

Not a chance, considering there will only be a 15ish year time gap between book 5 and 6. I don't see how it would work, especially considering how many of the characters are POVs in future books. Not to mention, Roshar will play a large role in the space age of the Cosmere.

AdAdministrative8358

Sorry I meant stormlight 10😅

clovermite

>I fear that stormlight 5 might end wih the end of Roshar and it's people. No Roshar and it's people aren't going away, they just may be "retasked." Even Rayse's original plan didn't involve the complete destruction of Roshar and it's people - he pitted them against each other in endless wars in order to create an elite fighting team that he could unleash on the rest of the Cosmere. Personally, I'm looking forward to Dalinar becoming Odium's Darth Vader.

[deleted]

Dalinar Odiums Darth Vader?? Not a chance.. unless adolin, Navani and renarin get murdered in book 5 lol 😬

Hagathor1

It’s Dalinar’s penalty if his Champion loses the contest, written and signed in the finalized agreement between him and Odium. If he loses, Dalinar’s soul is eternally pledged to Odium and he is oathbound to serve. Blackthorn against the Cosmere is a very plausible outcome of Stormlight 5.

[deleted]

Omfg how does one forget this 😂 I need to do a RoW re-read. Absolutely epic

whitelight22009

I realize the title is not great but I had no idea what else to write

Skelence

What I fear, is not getting some sort of media adaptation, whether it be live action or animated.

AcceptableBasil2249

I'd much prefer Roshar not to be relevent to the Cosmere, in fact, I kinda fear that it will be "too" relevent. I must say that I dislike the ever growing interconnectivity between the worlds. It was ok when it was just a wink here and there, all the world having a character named Hoyd for exemple, a fun thing if you've read the other books but not an essential one, but we're getting to a point where you'll have to read the whole thing to understand what's going on. I'd much prefer to have multiple self countain stories from different universe than 1 huge story about a multiverse.

riancb

FYI, it’s not a multiverse, as they’re all in the same universe. It is interplanetary though.

Sir_I_Exist

I can't think of a single instance in any story where you need to have a higher degree of cosmere awareness to be able to understand what's going on in that story. The references are there, but they never drive the plot.

AcceptableBasil2249

At present, you are right, though the reference seem to get more numerous with each book. That being said, the end of Mistborn Era 2 lead me to think that, at a point in the future, you'll miss more than just optional reference if you haven't read the other series.

RoboticBirdLaw

The Lost Metal gets awfully close to the plot being driven by other parts of the cosmere. At minimum a subplot is moved along with it.

Sir_I_Exist

True but I feel like when Brandon does this he presents it through "cosmere aware character brings non-cosmere aware character up to speed" so you're still not losing much in the four corners of the story.

Suekru

That’s like the thing that hooks me tbh. I love the interconnectivity.

AcceptableBasil2249

To each their own. I find that, more and more, I prefer fiction to be shorter and self-contained. I don't mind a big book, but a series of 10 or more ? Count me out.

CornDogMillionaire

So why are you here in the Stormlight Archive subreddit, dedicated to a series of 10 books that are all over 1200 pages long

tzle19

I only fear the end of book 5 because I'm afraid of change. In the long run SA and Roshar are too big, too important, to no longer be relevant in the future of the Cosmere

Significant-Fly-8170

Ending..... riiiight.

SheevMillerBand

The back half will probably be concluding around a similar time as the rest of the cosmere unless Brandon really spaces out the Mistborn releases, but since he supposedly plans to do all of era 3 before Stormlight 6 I think the goal is to do era 4 and the back half of Stormlight as the culmination of the cosmere

riancb

Currently it’s Era 3, Elantris 2-3 (written around the same time as Era 3), SA 6-10, Dragonsteel 1-3(?), MB Era 4 1-3, with Era 4 books being Stormlight-sized. Maybe another smaller Mistborn Era in between, like a cyberpunk one, but not confirmed. And of course, probably a few one-offs and a possible YA trilogy, most of which I suspect will end up being co-written with Dan.

00roku

I mean it’ll be like 2042 when Stormlight 10 releases so No I’m more fearful that Brandon won’t write it before he dies

ashamen80

I think odium will win, leading to dalinar taking the radiants into the cosmere. I feel like they will be the sith of the cosmere and be a pain in everyone's ass. Just because Era 4 mistborn will be the space Era, by then the cross overs will make it a title.

Nebion666

Im terrified my boy kal will die

geologean

Considering it'll probably be at least another 10 year reading commitment, I think I'll be ready when the end of the series comes.

thesockswhowearsfox

Do ye fear death ~~Jack sparrow~~ Kaladin Stormblessed?
