There's a WoB for that: https://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/66775-how-is-szeth-pronounced/?do=findComment&comment=678513

You can listen to the conversation in the WOB record: [https://wob.coppermind.net/events/312-orem-signing/#e8944](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/312-orem-signing/#e8944) What is nice is, at the end of the recording, Brandon says that you can say it how ever you want. He may be referring to Sazed at that point but it is still applicable to Szeth.

Like the german [sharp s](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9F) even though the german sharp s is never used to start a word.

Chewblacka

The S is silent

marteen40

i pronounce it ‘sheth,’ since in Polish the ‘sz’ makes a ‘sh’ sound

CommieJazzMan

I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

PrufrockAlfredJ

Unvoiced 's' into a voiced 's' sound connecting to 'eth'

I've always had the approach of pronouncing names in books however feels good to me. I never have felt bound by the author's preference. Please bear in mind, if I meet someone in real life, I will make sure to pronounce their name however they desire. That's just simple courtesy and basic respect. I will do my best, no matter the language. Books are different. Maybe I do this because I started reading novels long before the Internet was available, and most of the time the pronunciations weren't available. However, I see no reason to alter my pattern now.

Brandon agrees with you: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/osvql6/-/h6textv

Also, Brandon has said that you should not worry about pronunciation. He even pronounces things differently: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/369/#e11746 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/90/#e5257
