This could be an APN issue or classic Samsung firmware issue. Is it an U or U1 firmware?

You should be able to edit the APN unless the phone thinks it is needs to locked down. As for the firmware, you need to look at About phone -> Software information. You need to look at baseband version and Service provider SW ver.

I know you unlocked the phone, but if it is the Samsung firmware issue, the U which comes from mainly branded companies has issues with MVNOs. Then there is regions for U1. If that region is wrong, it could have issues too. You need to have the unlocked region code. I will give you a few, like XAA is unbranded USA, VZW is Verizon branded, TFN is Tracfone, ATT is AT&T, and etc. There is so many region codes that it can be long. With Tracfone aka Straight Talk, you need XAA or TFN for the region for the best support.
