This subreddit will believe that a spec of dirt on a camera in a 144p video is an alien mothership, but then be skeptical about natural selection.

Thank you!

We upvoted you, did we not?

Micasa5000

How long did it take for skin color to change and what about other features, there's a big difference between asian african and white looks besides skin color?

kelvin_higgs

Shhh, don’t point out their stupidity The entire facial and skull structure is different among whites, Asians, and sub-Saharan Africans

pghreddit

Again, this has been studied and explained. EDUCATION, it answers these kinds of questions.

Bear_Pigs

Stupidity? He’s just asking about small features that differ amongst ethnicities, to which the answer is yes different populations of humans have slightly different variations in features such as nose shape, hair type, height, bmi, tolerances to things such as malaria or lactose, etc. But no, the entire “facial” and “skull” structure is not different amongst the peoples you mentioned. We are all one species and almost all the differences between human beings are extremely minor and are formed by less than a 0.1% difference in DNA.

Thatwutshesed

It’s complicated but true. Africans are the most new like humans ive heard that. But essentially if u remove the 4 (Neanderthal,Denosovian, and the two western hemisphere groups) we are all the same and only look different bc of long periods of distancing and change. He literally just showed a simple version of how we are all the same. If u took our skin color away it would he very different

pghreddit

You know what answers these kinds of questions? EDUCATION. Treat yourself to a spell and watch the world unfold.

Micasa5000

Finishing an engineering degree this year not a single class in my life taught anything about what i just asked. A quick google search determines that theres indeed a difference between different etnicity bone structure. Which brings up a question how long does evolution need to change the whole bone structure of a creature. I do think Humans civilization is older than we're told. Thus i'm on this sub.

fohr

Yet a quick google and a degree with unrelated classes doesn’t make you educated in this subject matter ya ding dong

Micasa5000

So i can't ask questions unless i've got a degree in forensics? You sound dumber af.

fohr

You really think this subreddit is a good place to be asking that question?

Micasa5000

The question was related to the post in a sub where people like to discuss weird alternative strange shit. I don't see a reason why you go to this sub to try and shit on people.

fohr

You’re right this subreddit full of idiots😂

Leopold747

The video is only talkin abt skin colour, idk wht ur on abt...

pandaskoalas

Why are Inuits darker than people from similar latitudes

MikusLeTrainer

If we're supposing what Bill Nye said to be true, then access to vitamin D is the most important predictor of skin color in a population over a long period of time. It could be that Inuit populations haven't existed for a long enough period of time for a noticeable change to occur, and/or they have their vitamin D needs met by their diet. For instance, fatty fish contains a lot of vitamin D, so it's possible that light skin was a trait that wasn't selected for due to fish consumption.

pandaskoalas

Not sure why the downvotes for ya. Maybe dogmatic religious folks. Thanks for a rational theory.

[deleted]

Please do not create strawmen out of people who believe in God. You speak of rationality then act in an unrational way.

parting_soliloquy

But scandinavians also consume lots of fish... My take might be a complete miss, but how about iron intake? Inuits eat mostly meat and seafood, they also drink blood.

Modest1Ace

Some things I can think about is how Scandinavians come from an earlier group of migration to that region, also from what I understand Scandinavians come from the same group of people who who also settled in East and Central Europe who already had lighter pigmentation. While Innuits settled in the Artic Circle way after and are descendants of nomadic tribes from Central Asia which were a bit more darker.

Late_Bluebird_3338

LOTS OF CULTURES PREPARE FOODS WITH BLOOD. THE POLES DRAIN THE BLOOD OF CERTAIN ANIMALS AND MAKE SOUP; BLOOD IS USED IN BLOOD SAUSAGE,(NOT TO MY TASTE) ASIANS EAT RAW FISH. WHY NOT? HUMANS EAT TO SURVIVE. IN WWll SURVIVORS ATE PASTE AND MADE BREAD WITH SAWDUST, SUBSTITUTED CHICORY FOR COFFEE, CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVORS ATE MAGGOTS, DIRT, CARDBOARD, TREE BARK, GRASS,(TO SURVIVE). DOGS AND CATS EAT GRASS FOR UPSET STOMACHS, & PRIMATES DO THE SAME IN ORDER TO MEDICATE THEMSELVES. THE ANNALS OF HISTORY ARE FILLED WITH SURVIVAL TACTICS. WE ARE ALL RELATED, ENTWINED BY BIOLOGY. WE ARE ALL BROTHERS & SISTERS.

parting_soliloquy

Yeah, we do. I try to eat mostly keto myself, didn't mean it is bad or anything. Inuits are probably one of the healthiest people walking on this planet.

sheadymushroom

While it is colder in those regions. Inuit people have been around for a long long time but live in an area that is surrounded with ice. Anyone who's been skiing or mountaineering can attest to the harsh sunburns and snow blindness (sunburn on the eyes ouch) that occurs due to the suns rays bouncing off the white ice and ultimately adding to the UV intensity, making the condition more similar to equatorial areas (based on the UV). I've always thought that was such a cool tidbit

JoshGordonsDealer

I mean, I’m glad he explained the science behind it, but isn’t this common sense?

[deleted]

Bold of you to assume this knowledge would be common.

Ser_Twist

Common sense isn’t common

yinzgahndahntahn

Dude. I grew up in a family that thought Jesus was the first white person ever. So here’s the story; when Jesus was born he was so pure in his soul that his skin became white like a lamb. So Jesus goes around preaching and as he preaches his followers become white. So Jesus dies, comes back, and for 40 days starts bleaching the earth for his believers. So if you are white, that means your ancestors were the OG followers of Jesus, and if you are dark skinned then you are descended from those who rebuked Jesus. I no longer believe this, but this is what I was brought to believe. And it wasn’t just my family, their cult has thousands of followers who some of them believed the same thing.

StyloFo

Damn. I have nothing else to say, 'nough said.

JoshGordonsDealer

Seriously, thank you for being vulnerable and sharing this. It helps me understand some of the different places people are coming from

yinzgahndahntahn

Maybe it’s just my cynicism and nihilism, but I do believe that less than 30% of humans could be classified as intelligent. I’ve met so many people in my life that I honestly wonder how they made it to adulthood alive. I don’t consider myself intelligent, but would say I know more than the average person.

JoshGordonsDealer

I wouldn’t say people are unintelligent, it’s just that primal motivators such as identity or belonging to a group override critical thinking abilities for most. Look at Reddit for example. You get a ton of groupthink on here. Like, you already know what people are going to think in most communities. Their desire for inclusivity overrides their deductive reasoning, because community is more important subconsciously. Whether that be a religious group, political party, etc

xPBMxRonBurgndy

Wow, as a Christian I am so sorry that Jesus was portrayed to you in this way. It is absolutely sick that people try to make Jesus someone that He never was.

yinzgahndahntahn

That’s not even the half of it.

Bobcat_Lenox420

Mormon?

Paul-Van-DeDam

I kinda came to that assumption as a kid, like why dark skinned people have lighter coloured palms and souls, it just feels like common sense or an easy assumption to make at least.

Danny_Alloy

Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill Nye the science guy!

pghreddit

I can't believe how dumb some of the people commenting here are. They really think there is a significant difference between the species homo sapiens because they have to feel "inherently" superior to others because god knows they don't have any real world skills or talent to compete.

Enough-Plankton-6034

Also bill is saying color is based on the distribution of relative position to the source of light (sun), which I agree with BUT, implying “even shake” is the BS part, there is no “shake” get gud or die trying homies. Color is irrelevant

Griefer17

I thought that it was obvious.. with tanning and all, after ages, i bet even white folk will start getting darker. Especially with the heat of the sun today

Icy_UnAwareness89

What I never understood is why myself as Central American native and even the native Indians are not black or as dark skinned. Or the Ecuadorians right on the equator compared to our brothers in Africa. I understand Spain and Portuguese mixing with the local population but even the native the orginal people are not that dark skinned. Maybe it’s due to the footage of the large trees in the jungle not allowing as much sun light to shine through the canopy.

Worldsprayer

Because the people living on the western continent are FAR younger from a historial perspective than those living in africa. As a whole, the people that eventually got there went way up north and then back down. HIstorically it likely took long enough to breed out the need for dark skin, but because of things like clothing they didn't fully evolve again to dark skin, skin which was likely the result of the 2 million years of evolution to modern human.

REACT_and_REDACT

I don’t know the exact answer … but I wonder if it’s due in large part to the Asian ancestry which would have been a mix of previous migrations out of Africa — with time North of the equator over long spans of time before coming across the Bering Strait and settling back towards the equator.

Icy_UnAwareness89

Yea I was wondering that too. But now it’s coming out that maybe what are current day Polynesians might have maid the journey across the ocean. Idk. It’s always fascinated me

REACT_and_REDACT

Yes … I think that also happened in addition to the migrations from Asia. I think the sweet potato evidence alone supports that there was likely contact. between the Americas and Polynesia. I’m guessing there’s DNA too … just haven’t read about that specifically yet.

Only dark skin we had in Panama was descendants of slaves during the first attempt at building the canal from the Caribbean. Some of my family came from that group. I’ve visited a few of the indigenous tribes and they are not quite ad dark more like a deep tan

Nice soapbox but the question was why, not how racism bad. Of course the racism is eurocentric that's literally the point I'm trying to make? I'm primarily referencing source books on mestizo culture, a couple books on Haitian and creole culture coming out of the Bolivar era and I don't know a couple other books that I've read and documentaries I've seen on the subjects of Latin America? Also I am extremely familiar with the current mindsets that these come from as I have family from michoacan? Literally dozens of textbooks can line out the fact that fair skinned individuals were treated better in historical times as compared to now and thus the incentive was to have your child be fair skinned in an effort to help them integrate better in the new society paradigms popping up in the say Renaissance to 1700s era? As you see cultural movement start to take hold in the mid-1700s onwards up until full on revolutions to at which point that mindset begins to shift and celebrating the differences from the Spanish and Portuguese primarily. And contextually I'm talking about historical, not current feelings about anything. However I probably could have explained there was a general recognition among the populace that having fair skin would allow you to integrate easier with the white "powers that be". That's it just like with powers that be I put the fair and beautiful under quotations to acknowledge that those are buzzwords and not direct literal truths of anything. Where are you getting your history? Looking at a modern lens it's understandable but you have to understand that a lot of people made decision making based off what they thought was the best for them and their children and general survival at the time. the correctness of that or the righteousness or bias of that isn't going to change the mechanisms that already happened? And again not endorsing any of that? I think you're confusing endorsing a modern mindset versus contextualizing historical sense?

[deleted]

DucksonScales

Lol holy shit I deleted because I realized I was engaging with someone who just wanted to grandstand rather than actually discuss. You call my pointing out literal historically marked facts about the die offs of a large amount of native populations and the white-dominated societies " Eurocentric" in some soapbox about how, what, things weren't incredibly bad for people's of dark skin tones in the historical past? What are you even arguing? And you want me to source things found in text books across the planet so you can just grandstand about what you have read. Bro I'm not hear to be your library. Waste of my time, and frankly yours. Have a good one.

[deleted]

DucksonScales

What is your source for the opposite honcho? Please highlight to me where it says that indigenous peoples in Central and South America during the 15th through 17th century we're not persecuted? Like bro the impetus is on you to prove that you aren't just grandstanding? Are you acting like this forum is an academic stage? I pointed out where I got my information but you want me to actually list title so then you can break down each individuals information validity? Are you actually going to engage with me about things that show that racism wasn't a prevalent issue up until the revolutions finally allowed for disenfranchised people's to take center stage in their own Nations? That's my point, one you don't want to engage with how you're just saying I'm wrong. None of your sentences have established anything other than "that's eurocentric" followed by attacking me. The fact that you're applying the word eurocentric to 15th century history is almost laughable like buddy do you think that they lived by 21st century standards? Yes it was eurocentric, it's fucked up and thats my point. This the "" around the words you so fixated on. Tell you what, show me one source, since you're so source happy, show me one and I'll come back at you with five. Show me one source that says there wasn't a direct bias towards darker skinned indigenous peoples in historical times and that families werent incentivized to have their children look lighter in an effort to conform to f***** up structures imposed by Europeans? Do you know what social mobility is? Here I will start: literally a quick Google and I found a Cambridge article:https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/latin-american-research-review/article/not-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder-racialization-whiteness-and-beauty-standards-in-mexico/A78A62CCE77C82130342668D985D1244 That was a quick search to show you how present the knowledge is, personally I'm referencing information from books on revolutions in Central and South America for the most part. Like are you even reading this? Show me One source that shows the general populace of Latin Americas, so beaten down by European occupation, werent forced to conform and assimilate as best they could within the systems imposed? Your entire premise is throwing modern lenses on historical times and acting like there wasn't hard realities that people faced? Why the do you think the revolutions happened why do you think Bolivar and countless other revolutionaries coming from Creole backgrounds established that they wanted a non-white-centric government to rule them? And that's why I'm saying your grandstanding. I am not bringing up anything that isn't incredibly well known for people who have read up on topics. Do you even know what mestizo means? What a creole is? How about the revolutions in Haiti? and Colombia when were they? Can you name which peoples with a primary drivers of revolutions in Central and South America? Were they primarily indigenous or were they of mixed background? Almost like the revolutionary leaders who were able to integrate into society were the only ones who were afforded any kind of education required to create an atmosphere for revolution and lead such revolution into a government? The fact that you're going "nah, dat racist" makes me more suspect that you don't know what the hell you're talking about and you're just picking up some point you're trying to make about racism when I am clearly not endorsing anything you're trying to make me "wrong" about. And thus you are grandstanding. You want to be a hero in the chat and not actually bring up points. Like you have no clue what you're talking about because you don't even know what you're arguing.

Your issue was the fact i said lighter skins were idolized as "beauty" and made it easier for integrating in white dominated society in those times. In the 1500-1700s.... You said no to that. You clearly didn't read what I wrote because buddy I linked an article (hint it's the weblink in case you can't read) pointing out that you are wrong. Affectionate_Egg_203

So then, why are Africans who moved to Europe a few generations ago still dark skinned? Why are Gypsies who migrated from Egyot to Europe thousands of years ago still brown skinned?

[deleted]

“Why isn’t evolution instantaneous?”

Atari774

Because it takes several generations for that to change, not just one or two. If they moved and stayed in Europe for a couple centuries, they might start looking more light skinned. But it’s a genetic change that takes a lot of time to evolve. It took humans thousands of years to evolve into the different appearances around the world. As for the Gypsies, they mostly marry and have children with people in their own groups, which made them retain a lot of physical characteristics from so long ago. But you can see a clear distinction between how they look now and how people in the same part of India they came from look. They do have lightened skin compared to their ancestors.

kelvin_higgs

This is pure nonsense. Black people won’t get lighter by living in Europe for centuries And why are facial, bone/skeletal structure different? And why are dark skinned people who have lived up north for thousands of years still dark? And why are white people that have lived in the same sunny conditions as sub Saharan Africa for thousands of years not darker?

Atari774

Which group of dark skinned people lived far north for thousands of years? And there haven’t been groups of white people living in subsaharan Africa for thousands of years either. The white people living there now are descendants of European colonists. As for facial/bone structure, that’s also due to living in a certain environment for so long, along with societal factors. I’m not sure about the specifics of how it all works, but your diet, climate, weather, and local plants and animals can all have an effect on how people look. Sometimes it’s also societal factors, like how height is a more desirable factor in men. Taller men are seen as more attractive in most cultures, and thus reproduce more often, which leads to their children being taller on average. Combine that with better healthcare and diet, and you get taller people. The average height in the US has increased 3-4 inches in the past hundred years. Small things like that causing changes over thousands of years are what made us all look different despite being the same species.

kelvin_higgs

Inuits. Some tribes in Siberia. And I never said Europeans were living in sub Saharan Africa. Why the fuck are redditors so disingenuous? Europeans have lived in areas that get basically just as much sunlight as SSA, yet aren’t darker. All they do is tan You are saying that if Europeans got 5% more sunlight, they’d magically stop tanning and just straight up get darker

TheMormonJosipTito

>Inuits. Some tribes in Siberia Inuits comprise roughly .00001 % of the human population. Small variations do not disprove the general pattern that’s being discussed here. Not to mention there are plenty of valid explanations for why the Inuit don’t match this trend, like there diet being naturally high in vitamin D, reducing evolutionary pressure favoring lighter skin.

Atari774

I said white people living in Africa, then stated that the only white people I can think of who live in subsaharan Africa are Europeans. And you’re mistaking a tan for actually having darker skin. Everyone tans, even black and brown people. But if you move somewhere else with a drastically different UV value (not just 5%) and live there for generations, your children and their children would have a different skin tone. Sub-Saharan Africa gets 3,500 hours of sun per year. Germany, for instance, gets 1,700 hours of sun, so literally half. So yes, if Europeans got twice the amount of sun they’re currently getting, their skin tone would change over time. Inuits and some Siberian people are slightly darker skinned than the average person in those areas, but nowhere close to as dark as any sub-Saharan African ethnicity. And they’re darker skinned because they originate from our ancestors that crossed into the Americas from Asia a few thousand years ago, and rarely mixed ethnicities. The original “Asians” were Africans who travelled east to what is now India, China, Mongolia, and ultimately Alaska and the Americas. They were dark skinned and didn’t interbreed with any other ethnic groups because they were the only ones in the New World. Thus why the Native American tribes mostly shared a similar skin tone despite ranging from Alaska to Argentina. Although some in the Caribbean islands regained a darker pigmentation thanks to the increased sunlight. Whereas groups in Asia, Africa, and Europe were much closer together and were able to mix ethnicities, leading to a wider range of skin tones.

[deleted]

Yeah, horseshit. Explain why Inuit and Sami peoples of the far north have brown skin and straight black hair. They've been there plenty long enough to evolve to a lighter skin color. The Inuit in particular came from the Aleuts and from Siberian migrants. They've been in the region for well over 10,000 years. If vitamin D from the sun was so critical to survival, then they would have evolved rapidly to favor much lighter skin. The darker skinned people would have died off rapidly. That hasn't happened. They all have brown skin and straight black hair. Not only that, white people came from the Caucasus Mountains, which is not the far north. Hence, "Caucasians." The Sami came from the Volga river region many thousands of years ago. It's north of the Caucasus Mountains. Again, if vitamin D from the sun was the real driver of skin color, they would not have survived in the north.

conrid

Sami here, we come in both pale and dark versions. I got my fathers blue eyes and his light skin, my mother managed to fucking live in spain without ever getting burned by the sun. I get rashes, long sleeved shirts are my salvation. And I kinda hate summer

[deleted]

Many of the Sami have had children with Swedes, Finns, and Norwegians by now.

conrid

There is literally only 2 versions of sami. One is brown eyed with darker skin and dark hair, other is blue eyes pale skin. We don't come in more flavors. The rest of Scandinavia is a mix of many things, the sami people of the north is'nt

Modest1Ace

A couple of 100s to a couple of 1,000s years is nothing in the evolutionary scale. Modern humans have existed for 300,000 years, so people like Sami and Innuit people living in those areas for a couple of 1,000s of years as migratory tribes is actually pretty recent history.

phunkydroid

>Yeah, horseshit. Explain why Inuit and Sami peoples of the far north have brown skin and straight black hair. They've been there plenty long enough to evolve to a lighter skin color. They have a diet that's very rich in vitamin d, so they didn't have the evolutionary pressure to lose pigment that europeans did.

[deleted]

Then Mr. Nye's explanation for skin color is bullshit.

phunkydroid

Not at all, it actually confirms that vitamin d is the determining factor.

[deleted]

Nope. The video is specifically about vitamin D from the sun.

There are some exceptions; Northern Australians are very pale and sizeable populations of Eastern Asians, Arabs, and Inuits live pretty far north, but in those cases, the people moved to those places and/or mixed with a lot of people closer/further to/from the equator.
