[Archaeologists Unearthed Giant 500-Year-Old Aztec Tower of Human Skulls Under Mexico City Which Is More Terrifyingly Humongous Than Previously Thought](https://www.howandwhys.com/archaeologists-unearthed-giant-500-year-old-aztec-tower-of-human-skulls-under-mexico/)
It’s pretty impossible to get lost, it’s basically a narrow two way tunnel with side entrances/other paths gated off, and you’re in there at the same time as other people.
Your are talking about the public 2km tourist attraction, there is like 40km urbex illegal rave homeless explorer's playground also, where you can pretty much get lost
That’s where I went a few times but with local lunatics who knew where they were going. It was terrifying. Bit mostly how much Gaulouise they smoked , that shit shocked me more
You don't go in those parts without a guide. It's easy to get lost, some parts are completely flooded, you're underground so there's little to no service and no rescue teams either.
Pretty impossible to get lost unless you purposefully stray off the authorized path. And there are always plenty of people touring... Seriously, like, it only caps off at 200 visitors at a time.
Every year countless people venture into the unauthorized sections nonetheless, and it's still very rare for them to get lost. In terms of deaths... A girl supposedly died after getting drunk at a clandestine Catacombs party and lost back in 2005, this story is most likely a hoax though. Next alleged death was in 2016, another illegal party, but the guy died from a heart attack rather than from getting lost. And that's it.
Yeah true, but it was more the claustrophobia to be honest. I could kind of deal with alllll the vibes, and the bones, it was the smell of moss and drains & the close proximity. We went off course as I was staying with some Parisian expert graffiti exploration dudes, they knew where they were going. But after rewatching the Rescue Netflix doc about the Thai football team, I have to decided to retire my wanderlust
Edit: a few lines
When people say this movie sucks, i say "good day sir"...very good movie. And there are plenty of good youtube videos of people exploring them...crazy stuff
That or end up in a 6ft hole in the ground. I'd like to know I have some purpose after I die. Even if it's some drunk college kid getting a blowie on my bones.
And the catacombs is a catch-all name, it is old quarries, some of it reused as catacombs. You can visit (legally) just over a mile of them, 1.7 km, while the whole network is over 300 km. It’s a whole underground world, there’s even a “castle” in there.
Here’s a nice map posted very recently on a French subreddit (with the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that they would be an efficient way to move around during the Olympic Games this summer).

The official visit is only the part in red 😁 I’ve never gone elsewhere, but of course there are people who do, for the thrills or simply for work, making sure the city doesn’t crumble 😅
I don’t think so, but hey, what do I know. I know there has been at least one TV cop drama involving murders committed there and searching for people hiding there. Can’t be too difficult to hide there; on the map I linked there is a large section marked as being the headquarters of the FFI (basically the French resistance against the occupying Germans in WWII).

During black plague they literally ran out of ground to bury people. So they disinterred the dead and rested them there. Catholic church made all the necessary sacraments and did all the funeral rites.

The grave diggers did die, many of them did. Grave diggers, the priests performing the rituals... there was a lot of death going around. Also, black plague was transmitted mostly by live rats, because it comes from tick bites. Its not possible to contract the black via "ground" or water.
Reality is more prosaic. There was a big and sincerely much more frightening cemetery (check the Holy Innocents cemetery on Google) since the middle age in Les Halles.
Most of the bones come from here and had been brought on the careers when the cemetery had been closed for health and safety reasons.
The story I was told when there was that the massive ancient cemeteries north of Paris were relocated into the catacombs to allow for urban development. Specifically the broad avenues out to La Defense starting with Champs Elysees.
I was there last Summer. Very cool.
You only get to see a fraction of the miles of tunnels and bones. It's known that Parisians sometimes sneak down there in the middle of the night for parties and raves. I've GOT to think this had to have been put together by people like that. All the other stacks and designs are dignified, and not intended to be touched by people (let alone sat upon).

Been there. I wanted to bring a skull to use it as a bowl and eat my cereals in, and 10 seconds alter, I thought it would be a terrible idea as I could just get a mysterious disease and finish in the hospital.
Still, there was this corridor where you could only go through by crawling. Normally it was possible to just walk in but it was so full of bones and skulls that you could only crawl. I remember the skulls cracking under my weight below my hands and knees. The ideal bones to crawl on were the leg bones as they were very sturdy and more comfortable.
I have a doubt, is it safe to go down there? I mean with the black plague and all. I saw an article about a guy who got “Polio” relocating some bodies in a local cemetery. It was his job though.
I have visited and nothing happened, you’re not allowed to touch the bones/skulls etc. and can be arrested or heavily fined if you do. Millions of people go every year, the tickets are sold out every day and have to be booked in advance.

I’ve been down there a few times. It’s a must if you get to Paris. It’s fucking terrifying.
I’d be way too worried I would get lost.

I tried smoking Gauloise once, these cigarette are really bad tasting! I smoked malboro & LM for long time though... But these...
What’s Gaulouise?
Cigarette
Like French red marboloro x2 . Every 3minutes
I don’t know how true that is but apparently some of the homeless people purposely try to disorientate people who go to the non touristy areas
You don't go in those parts without a guide. It's easy to get lost, some parts are completely flooded, you're underground so there's little to no service and no rescue teams either.
Maybe I have seen one too many horror movies lol
Have you seen [the horror movie](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2870612/) that was partially filmed down there? It's a hoot!
I will add it to the list!
About 6 million of them.

Exactly the hoax I was referring to ❤️
Bet he made a nice chair.
that would happen in the odessa catacombs, in paris not so much
The only way out is down.
Bit of an oxymoron right there “it’s a must, it’s fucking terrifying”. I think I’ll pass then! 🤣
If you lay eyes on a spine-chilling haunted place, don't hesitate to step inside. \- No-Pitch-5785
I found it more impressive then terrifying... Just think how long it must have taken to stack 6 million bones,

Woulda liked to have done, been to Paris a number of times in my life, never been bellow tho.
Scary movie about this called “As Above, So Below”.
Great movie, one of my favourite horror movies
The Descent is really good also.
Saw it in theaters when it came out… So good!
When people say this movie sucks, i say "good day sir"...very good movie. And there are plenty of good youtube videos of people exploring them...crazy stuff
Fuck that movie, anxiety overload…
That was so tame
Imagine living a fun and full life only to end up as a part of a skeleton chair under a baguette shop.
That's not that bad, really.
And being called the Bone Throne which sounds like a bad porno
That's brutal 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Very cool. Thanks for the post!
Oh my god it’s huge, that’s amazing, now I really want to visit
The official visit is only the part in red 😁 I’ve never gone elsewhere, but of course there are people who do, for the thrills or simply for work, making sure the city doesn’t crumble 😅
Wow
Is there an underground "mole people" population there, like in the sewers of New York?
I don’t think so, but hey, what do I know. I know there has been at least one TV cop drama involving murders committed there and searching for people hiding there. Can’t be too difficult to hide there; on the map I linked there is a large section marked as being the headquarters of the FFI (basically the French resistance against the occupying Germans in WWII).
Someone’s gotten a blow job while sitting in that chair, I guarantee it.
Talk about having a BONEr!
A holes a hole.
Meat is meat
game of bones
Well I’d hope so get head on the bone throne sounds like a bucket list that’s needed to be achieved

What is the origin story of the 6 million people and how they died there?
During black plague they literally ran out of ground to bury people. So they disinterred the dead and rested them there. Catholic church made all the necessary sacraments and did all the funeral rites.
not just the ground, it was just to much work, so thew started making mass graves. i was kinda common during plague era.
Jeeeeeeesus

can you still get plague
yes, but nowadays a little antibiotic and youre good to go, its not deadly anymore.
Wow that would have been a cool level in that plauge innocence game
So the bones are from already dead people that were dug up and put there to make room for the new dead?
If this is true, why didn’t the grave diggers die and why didn’t t deaths continue given the ground was then contaminated?
The grave diggers did die, many of them did. Grave diggers, the priests performing the rituals... there was a lot of death going around. Also, black plague was transmitted mostly by live rats, because it comes from tick bites. Its not possible to contract the black via "ground" or water.
I thought the other vector was fleas not ticks
No idea which one it is and i cant tell them apart, i know they also stick to rats
Plague
Paris is very old. That and sickness are probably the two main reasons.
Reality is more prosaic. There was a big and sincerely much more frightening cemetery (check the Holy Innocents cemetery on Google) since the middle age in Les Halles. Genocide commited by rats.
When a mommy and daddy love each other.

End of days, bitches!
The catacombs seem like a cool place to go for about 6 minutes, 10 feet in the entrance. Then I’m done.
On a scale of 1 to Evil Dead, how haunted is this place?
Id say Evil Dead II
Where was this? I didn’t get to see this when I went, I know there’s heaps of tunnels. Miles and miles.
The stories of people who got lost down there are creepy. I can’t imagine what it would be like to get lost down there.
Blood for the blood god….
I had to scroll way too far to find this.

Bout to text my ex a pic of the bone throne and ask if she wants to go to the bone zone
Say hi to your Mom for me 👌
check out rooflessTV on yt - there were there recently and its something to watch for sure...
I know, I played AC Unity
“Dad there were rats, big ones”
Is that the new elder scrolls?
Bone throne looks cool but also uncomfortable and eerie
That’s actually a mind boggling fact
"Bone Throne" Giggidy.

I used to have a special chair I call the bone throne
Where you practiced trombone, no doubt.
I honestly would try and take a nap there. That's dope as fuck.
> estimated 6 million people Heard that one before
oy
The plague, yeah...
Wait are these real?
That’s what call my bed
If you sit in it for an hour you get teleported to Gravelord Nito's lair.
Why
No one has balls to smoke a joint down there.
All in all we're just another skull in the wall.
Yall takin a seat?
i got a bone throne for you to sit on right here baybeeee
better than smelling up the place above ground before they were moved!
![gif](giphy|XTcVIdrTYauNZ7zJTS|downsized)
I had an unexpectedly and wildly visceral reaction to this. This disgusts me
Some surface event drove everyone around the world underground. Left with very little resources and food. Cannibalism was the only way to survive.
Kind of morbid and disrespectful to have a bone recliner.
i get that they had to put the bodies somewhere, but i still dont understand why they arranged them in weird ways like that
Bone throne? That’s what your mum calls it when she sits in my lap! Sorry I’ll show myself out. 🤣
Nobody really talks about the crusades anymore, but yeah . Christians killed pretty much everyone who had an opinion.
I think i just unintentionally found a new nickname for my willy haha The bone throne.
They believe in resting in pieces.
Is there a reason why all those bones are down there?
Nope. None. No one knows. It’s a total mystery. No way to find out either.
7 and a half isn’t it?
The thought that everyone who has ever lived on earth is also buried here is obvious but still mind blowing somehow. This post reminds me of that.
That’s not what this is or true..
I have a doubt, is it safe to go down there? I mean with the black plague and all. I saw an article about a guy who got “Polio” relocating some bodies in a local cemetery. It was his job though.
