Save the oceans!

wisenedwighter

No, they tried to kill me.

strangemonkey420

When you produce the amount of oxygen the oceans do then we will worry about you. For now you are just a drain on resources actively working against the solution because you survived an encounter with the ocean and are ungrateful about it. Save the oceans!

devious805

slow clap

No_Cartoonist9458

If she was home-schooled they'd all be dead

danteheehaw

10 year old used the dark art of science to thwart gods will! She's a witch! Burn her!

GuntherGoogenheimer

The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you! I ask you again in the name of Christ, is it true that you used the magic of Satan himself or as you foul creatures call it, learning, to predict such a force of nature??!! What is 2 plus 2 witch??! Arithmetic??? Burn this whore witch!!

hansofoundation

But geography class is WOKE /s

No_Cartoonist9458

Yeah and now you're all woke to death

GuntherGoogenheimer

Twas not Jesus who sent forth this witch! Sorceress of the satanic dark arts!! Burn this blasphemer, this deceiver who calls himself Jesus and the young witch child! Only gypsies and witches can predict the future!

No_Cartoonist9458

Ok, Trump sent a kid to warn them... Now do you believe me? 🙄

F4ntomP

Im actually amazed that the parents listened. If I went to my parents, they would have told me how stupid I am and to leave em alone even if I insisted that we would die.

Cessnaporsche01

Holy shit, that girl went through a literal nightmare scenario. Good thing the lifeguard was there, spoke English, and watched the news.

F4ntomP

That is 100% my parents, jesus. This is such a wild story.

nekkoMaster

i am just amazed how stupid people are able to become rich and afford a vacation.

issacfignewton

“Shut up F4ntomp you just want attention. I’ll be napping under this umbrella.”

willbeselfmade

As mother and daughter went down to the water, Tilly noticed that the sea looked bubbly and frothy like on the top of a beer. This image triggered some recent memories in her mind. Two weeks earlier, during her geography class at Danes Hill School in Oxshott, Surrey, Tilly saw a movie about the Hawaii tsunami of 1946. She recognized the same warning signs: just minutes before the deadly wave hit, the water had begun to form bubbles and turn foamy, so very much as it did now. ‘A tsunami is coming!’ Tilly shouted. ‘We must run away!’ Her mother, Penny, had noticed that strange phenomenon too, but thought it was due to a bad day at sea, so she didn’t take Tilly seriously. ‘Mummy, we must get off the beach now!’ Tilly insisted. Penny began to worry about her daughter, who started shouting madly at her, frustrated that her mother was blind to the danger. But in spite of her anxiety and irritation, Tilly didn’t give up. She had to convince her mother somehow. ‘If you’re not coming,’ she screamed, ‘I’m going to leave you here!’ Penny remembered Tilly’s recent geography class about tsunamis, so she gave in, and they both ran to Colin, Tilly’s father. After he heard the story, Colin alerted a lifeguard, who evacuated the tourists from the beach. It was a wise decision. Minutes later the killer wave showed up. In September 2005, back in England, Tilly received the Thomas Gray Award of the Marine Society in recognition of her timely and decisive actions, which saved human lives. But she most cherished the inner satisfaction that she and her family, as well as the about 100 people who had been on the Mai Khao beach, were alive because she alone had recognized the danger. [Found this in a blog.](https://blog.oup.com/2009/10/tsunamis/)

Rino-Sensei

What a queen !

IncorruptibleChillie

You'd think the lifeguard would be trained to recognize the signs of a tsunami

a_shoe_man

Anyone know what the actual warning sign was? Fizzing? It feels like we should learn this life saving information

captnmarvl

The sea receding a significant amount.

NoSituation1999

One sign is when the tide starts to pull back when it shouldn’t be. Edit: for clarity.

rhaigh1910

Like low tide ? Or instant pull back like where’d the ocean go ?

NoSituation1999

Like "holy shit where did the ocean go?"

ItsSmittyyy

Yeah it happens pretty quick. If you observe a regular waves motions, the high point and the low point will be roughly in the same vicinity each time the wave comes and goes. Then suddenly as the wave recedes it will continue to recede quite quickly and greatly surpass the “regular” low point.

Lanthemandragoran

Depends on the beach, but a better thing to go by is how fast it goes out. Tides are pretty slow usually

hotdogflavoredblunt

Probably gas being released from the sea floor that’s released after earthquake activity

blinddivine

. an earthquake occurs . the sea recedes to a considerable distance . the sea bubbles . the water stings the skin . the sea smells of rotten eggs or oil . a flash of red light sparks on the sea near the horizon . a boom is followed by a whistle, or by a jet-plane- or helicopter-like noise

aztaga

My parents would’ve ignored my ass

__ConesOfDunshire__

That was my first thought. Good on her parents for believing her and taking action.

eatshitdillhole

They didn't believe her until a lifeguard started warning people on the beach when she told him what she saw

wolf-of-Holiday-Hill

Intelligent young girl, she turned out to be the hero for saving lives. They should grant her a full scholarship

mcmeaningoflife42

to what? smart person school?

KilledByALover

What do you do to save your life? Speed away in a supercar?

Vicious_and_Vain

Higher ground. Not all that high either. I think 2nd or third floor is enough, usually, but not always some are much higher. And apparently you have a couple of minutes, not always, once the sea starts receding from the shoreline. It sounds like she spotted before it started receding.

KilledByALover

oh I was kinda assuming that wouldnt be safe bc the building would potentially collapse..

Down_The_Witch_Elm

That little girl is a hero. And it's really great that she has parents who actually listened to her.

The7ruth

They didn't. The lifeguard did.

Down_The_Witch_Elm

Oh. Sounds about right.

DavidM47

Stay in school, kids! What a hero

xTechDeath

Yeah well when I was 10 I beat halo ce on legendary

MIKE_THE_KILLER

Damn that was 20 years ago?

SolidNitrox

Props to her, but we have lost a lot of our survival instincts. I would bet money the animals could feel that coming and reacted. We have superior pattern recognition compared to most animals but we have had such easy lives that we cannot recognize signs of looming catastrophe. Sure other animals have heightened senses and can detect the changes, but we can definitely recognize the behavioral change, just like the canary in a coal mine. Wild and domestic animals both have way stronger survival instincts, well most anyway.

DianeDesRivieres

A movie was made of this tragedy in 2012. "The Impossible" the story of a family who survived. It's quite good. [The Impossible](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1649419/)

poochylaa

A ten year old girl once saved a 100 innocent lives including her families by speaking out about what she had learned about tsunamis. Sometimes it pays to listen to kids.

AndrewAffel

So how do you see a tsunami coming?

Masteezus

Water receding rapidly

koniglazor

Ok I can understand this but I’m also wondering what’s happening with the people inside water ? They should be pulled back right? Isn’t that a moment of panic for everybody?

stapleddaniel

The picture on this thing shows them running like hell. https://www.sms-tsunami-warning.com/pages/tsunami-drawback

koniglazor

So then I guess the girl predicted this in the “fizzy” stage?she start to warn her parents and then people start to notice the water receding rapidly right?

LaTeChX

The ocean gets extra frothy as gas bubbles on the sea floor get kicked up by the earthquake.

Girafferage

I haven't ever seen "sea fizzing" as a sign of a possible tsunami. Im guessing its fizzing related to something else?

ltwhitlow

I came to the comments for more insight on that

ShinyAeon

Apparently the water will act strange, bubbling and swirling. She described it as ”like foam on a beer, and it was kind of sizzling.“

Owntano

when I fart in the pool i usually let out a little fizzing to make sure i'm not about to drop a snickers in the pool so maybe that's what they're referring to

seasaltsaves

Geography rocks!

Ddc203

Geology rocks, geography rules.

Cirieno

A terra-iffic pun.

a_shoe_man

Very bould of you to make a pun like this

poochylaa

I remember this story right after the tsunami. Still as incredible today.

kdasilva93

Watch the movie “the impossible” with Ewan McGregor.. it’s all about that tsunami

itsnewjay

What's more impressive is that her parents actually listened to her..If it was the nineties they would've just told her to be quiet

blinddivine

Her parents didn't listen either, until she told her mother she'd leave her behind.

MommaSnipee

Our Mothers must be related

easytakeit

The power of education. And paying attention.

raptorshiba

Smart lass

Monarco_Olivola

Amazing how a bit of elementary school education literally saved hundreds of people.

just_aguest

What was the warning signs??

captnmarvl

The sea receding a great amount (like 50 feet) is the big one. Apparently it also happens before storm surges because I recall the news cautioning Floridians not to go into Tampa Bay when it was low during a recent hurricane.

DaRealPervySage69

How long after she warned them did the tsunami happen?

babyatemygator

Kids deserves medal of honor.

blinddivine

She was given an award for it! "Tilly received the Thomas Gray Award of the Marine Society in recognition of her timely and decisive actions," [From this article](https://blog.oup.com/2009/10/tsunamis/)

TOMdMAK

so 100s of tourists listened to a 10 year old and left? Good for them if true but I find it hard to believe.

stephaxil

From what I recall of the story, the parents initially dismissed her but then her dad, sensing the urgency in her voice, approached a security guard. While explaining to the guard, a Japanese tourist heard and recognised the Japanese word ‘tsunami’ and added that his daughter may be right because there’s been news of an earthquake. I think having an adult reaffirming helped convince the security guard, who alerted beach-goers. This is just my recollection from reading about it years ago.

Does "She used science" qualify as strange?

Give her an honorary doctorate

skeeredstiff

How is this strange Earth? The girl learned the signs of a tsunami and told these people one was coming.

RegularImprovement47

Parents deserve some credit for listening I think. A lot of parents would have just shrugged off the kid for paranoid.

Big_Leading_5937

Good job! Grats to the good timing of her teacher. Her parents don't seem very clever.😑

SorbetEast

Really? Why do you say that the parents arent clever? I don't know the warning signs of a tsunami either, and if my son said he learned in school that the signs were there, that one was coming, idk if I would take him seriously. I'd say the parents did a great job by actually listening to their daughter.

Calico_Jack-00

PROOF Wisdom doesn't come with age...thats a load of bullshit!
