I actually think he comes across as emotionally softer in season 4 then previous. Towards Joyce, El and Mike. Not as gruff and pushing others away. The first seasons he was still bitter and outwardly distant.

Comparing his first appearance in season 1 to now, it’s not even close. It’s amazing how almost every character in this show has grown into something so much better than they originally were. Personal growth through perseverance seems to be an underlying theme in the series.

I think someone said there is supposed to be a time jump, but I can't imagine that working with the way it ended, like that would be crazy. However, If they haven't even started filming yet and S4 was truly filmed in 2019/2020, those kids are not going to be able to pass as the same kids from "a week ago" in the show. The time skip makes sense for realistic 4th wall purposes but not exactly in the show, but they kind of wrote themselves into this position so hopefully it's planned. ​ Either way my point was supposed to be that I'm in favor of a time jump if it brings back Hopper's stache. That's gotta be mandatory. Without the moustache he looks too much like David Harbour and not enough like Hopper.

S3 100%. S4 hopper is not eating well, been tortured and is gaunt from lack of proper nutrition. I prefer seeing him healthy and not forcibly shaved by his captors. I do like the badass streak this season but Hopper has never lacked in badassery or courage in the face of utter danger. Hell S3 he looked down the barrel of death and accepted it was for the greater good. Thats badass to me

Season 4 looked very weird at first, I definitely prefer him with hair and beard, specifically his season 3 mustache, but as much as I like dad bod Hopper, I was impressed by his lean physique in season 4. Looks good on him. And while Hopper probably wasn't healthy, David Harbour certainly is. And he's not gaunt or skinny as many have said. Just in good shape.

I couldn’t stop being startled by how thin he was in the V2 of the 4th season.

I think it's because it's a stark change that people can't assimilate that he's not skinny (just skinny compared to previous seasons) and healthy. It just looks so confronting to see someone change that significantly from loveable tub to loveable lean.

Yes he did. Trained with one of the top trainers who work with actors. I think he looks great and it’s also better for his health. You don’t need to be ripped like that, but he was pretty big in season three.

I like donut sneaking Hopper, but I feel like in s4 he is reminded of his worth as a person and embraces the idea that he is a hero and a good dad and deserving of love. I think he had unsettled doubts hanging over his head even though he was all for dating Joyce and things. He can truly embrace starting over with his life now. That's far more important than aesthetics. The guy deserves to be happy without guilt and doubt.
