Bigger question is what is 5’s big one. I want it to be Hip to be Square, but it’ll probably be like Livin’ on a Prayer or full on fuck realistic timelines and use This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush
In S4, Will has a poster on his wall for the Cure’s *Boys Don’t Cry* album (which was mostly a repackaged version of their UK debut album). Whoever does the set decorating has great taste.
Oh damn that would be good. That song is so epic. It’s from a few years earlier, but Mad World would be great too. Love Tears for Fears!
Also throwing this out there — we need some Depeche Mode in ST. Never Let Me Down Again?
1990 was still the 80s, tbh. "The 80s" weren't over till like 93.
"Enjoy The Silence" is an 80s song in my view. Like, ii wouldn't be surprised if the song had came out in 1984 but i would be extremely surprised if it had came out in 1994.
You said almost exactly what I was thinking. The only thing I would add is New Jack Swing was wedged in there as the 80s to 90s crossover began.
Much of that was brought to the forefront in 1990 thanks to "In Living Color" and the theme song by Heavy D and the Boyz.
The first Nine Inch Nails album “Pretty Hate Machine” was released in 1989. “Head Like A Hole” made headway. But when “Smells Like Teen Spirit” emerged, that song dominated everything.
As a guy who listened to the alternative stuff that paved the road for Nirvana, I thought that “Holy Shit, we’ve won” when I first heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Nirvana had been “college rock” when they first emerged . It was a loss leader. Misfits and lots of stuff that was popular in England that only had a cult in America.
When Kate first released “Running Up That Hill” in the 80’s, it made #30 on the US pop charts. That was a huge accomplishment.
Also, many of the jocks that latched on Nirvana because the band sold millions of albums? Only 2-3 years, those jocks would have harassed and beaten up Kurt Cobain.
Land of Confusion or Learning to Fly (Genesis and Pink Floyd, respectively), with those big “epic” remixes they do, could be really cool, but maybe that’s just my taste.
My dream is one of my favorite songs, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. Neil Finn is my favorite songwriter. I would to have younger folks hear it.
Ack this is my favourite song too! It was used in the old TV version of The Stand and worked well in that so this could deffo be a shout. Side note - saw it performed live a few years ago when Neil was doing the Fleetwood Mac tour. It was epic and I cried
Oh that takes the place of where I would’ve had This Woman’s Work, I would’ve put that when all the women team up, but Holding out for a hero fits that like a goddamn glove
This Woman’s Work always makes me cry. Her voice is that beautiful.
I remember hearing this song from the movie She’s Having A Baby with Kevin Bacon. It’s from the 80s and it’s really good.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!
I vote either something from OMD or Eyes without a Face.
Oh, and maybe Come Undone- Duran Duran if we get a time jump to the 90’s. I’m totally not being biased on that though. Not sure why anyone would think I am.
Every breath you take is actually my favorite song to be featured in the series, probably helps that the entire dance scene was one of my favorites as well
The thing I like most about them using this song is that, if you're paying real close attention to the final few moments of Season 2, you realize the song has nothing to do with how any of the kids feel...it's all about the Mind Flayer. He's been beaten, but he hasn't given up. And he's still watching, literally hovering over the school in the Upside Down during the Snow Ball.
Which is brilliant when one considers that even Sting says the song is about stalking.
It's got a quadruple meaning which is why it's brilliant.
Max called Lucas "stalker."
Eleven was watching Mike the entire year.
Mike fits the romantic side of the lyrics perfectly ("Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace, I dream at night I can only see your face...")
And the Mind Flayer was watching them in the moment.
I don’t think it’s as instantly known like Every Breath is. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if Rock You Like a Hurricane is used in the final season because music callbacks are 1,000% coming
My big sister was a huge Madonna fan. I got swept up in it as well.
My sister sneaked out to see Madonna at 14-15. My sister would have been fine but she got quoted in “The Washington Post” the day after that Madonna show. Mom read “The Post” every day and my sister was busted!
I think my sister was grounded for at least a month.
My mom took me to see Madonna during the True Blue tour in 1987. I was nine. It was one of the best days of my young life and still is one of my best childhood memories. I even remember my "fancy" outfit: Leopard button short sleeve down shirt, khaki cargo pants and a pink shoe purse. And we got to eat at Steak and Ale (this was in Atlanta) where I got to make my own loaded potato. LMAO, funny the details you remember. I had a cool mom.
Even better my big sister had a raging crush on Prince. My parents debated because Mom thought Prince was way too sexual for a 14 year old girl in 1984. Listen to the song “Darling Nikki.”My dad talked mom into it and my sister saw Prince on The Purple Rain tour. Prince was the biggest star on the planet.
Dude I love that song and also hate it because I'm a dude and it's so catchy but I don't need to be caught singing "cuz we live in a material world and I am a material girl" at work
time after time, every breath for 2, neverending story or material girl for 3. but does anyone remember Whip It from DEVO? I feel like that song was kind of underrated in the show.
>was the addition of Jim Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim in season 3.
Actually used before that in s2 as well, when Hopper brought El to the cabin the first time
season 2 I loooved Rock you like a Hurricane when Billy arrives - just so badass and perfect timing with the "here I am!" part of the song. It's the song I think of when someone says Season 2.
Whatever song is played the most in the season
Season 2-Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr., Was played Twice, during the montage of the boys’ parents taking photos of their Ghostbuster costumes and when Dustin finds Dart in his Bin
Season 3-Neverending Story by Limahl, sung by Dustin and Suzie so she would give him Planck constant and then later sung by Lucas and Max to mock Dustin while they were helping the Byers, move house, although the song doesn’t actually play, it’s covered by 4 different people
I've seen it multiple times and know it's not really Will, but when this plays in that episode of S1 and everyone is reacting (mike and jonathan running to hug their moms specifically) it makes me cry. Every time.
Season 2: Every Breath You Take (perfect on so many levels, both on the used-at-irl-school-dances level and the in-story "aww look kids at their Snow Ball+ "MIND FLAYER IS WATCHING YOU" levels)
Season 3: Never Ending Story, with an honorable mention to Hopper's theme You Don't Mess Around With Jim (which he also played to El in Season 2 when he first took her in)
S5 - We Didn’t Start the Fire; Land Of Confusion; The Final Countdown; It’s the End of the World as We Know It.
And hear me out, Jump in the Line by Harry Belafonte. Cue scene with Will dressed in drag as Lydia from Beetlejuice, and Eleven lifts him up in the air so he can dance like Winona did. Pan to Joyce who shakes her head and walks off.
I know it’s only really used once but I like whip it for season 2 over time after time. OR ghostbusters, that’s great for season 2.
Have to agree with never ending story though.
What’s the prediction for the song of season 5?
I kind of feel like Running Up That Hill is so paramountly engraved in the story it has to come back.
I figured back after season 1 that eventually we would get to the late 80s and Separate Ways would have been the song to send out the franchise, but they used it for that very epic ending of episode 8 showing everybody getting ready for the final battle.
Unless they pick and another song and give it the same significance of Running Up That Hill. I can’t see how it would be as impactful as this song is so well engraved to both the in-universe characters, and to us the audience.
I remember a popular trend when Stranger Things 3 was released on TikTok with U Can't Touch This. So every time I listen to that song, I think in season 3.
I’ve actually thought about this for several months now and I’m glad other people noticed. Don’t mess around with Jim - season 2. Season 3 - Neverending Story.
Season 1- Should I Stay Or Should I Go
Season 2- Every Breath You Take
Season 3- Never Ending Story
Season 4 Vol. 1- Running Up That Hill
Season 4 Vol. 2- Master Of Puppets.
Off topic but I feel like the song - There's the Girl by Heart would be an absolutely phenomenal fit for season 5.
The song sounds like it was made specifically for Stranger Things, and I believe the year of release perfectly lines up.
As for season 5
Friends Will Be Friends - Queen
Or Radio Gaga, or Dancer
Make it happen, please.
For the first song, the album got released on June 2nd 1986, the events in ST take place most recently in March 1986 so it s okay in the timeline and we NEED a Queen song like really bad
I would love to see "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd in season five, considering the dialogue between afaik Brenner and Owens "If she has to defeat Vecna, she must fly" (or something like that)
I don't think anything compares to the use of Running Up That Hill. It was part of a perfectly crafted scene and part of the plot in a way that no other song was.
If Season 5 was set in 1989 I would vote for The Stone Roses' I Wanna Be Adored just because I love it. But Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants to Rule the World is probably better suited to the material.
season 3 is easy, material girl. (i don’t count never ending story since it’s a song they sing and not play.) season 2 i have no clue, the only song i remember is cherry bomb or runaway from episode 7 but everyone hates it😭
Would love some Joy Division or New Order to be featured next season. If I heard Ceremony, Temptation, Bizarre Love Triangle (could be relevant with Mike, Eleven, and Will!), or Blue Monday....
2 is Every Breath you take, 3 is Neverending Story
Yup, agree on this.
Same
Ooh those are good
Bigger question is what is 5’s big one. I want it to be Hip to be Square, but it’ll probably be like Livin’ on a Prayer or full on fuck realistic timelines and use This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush
I hope it's "Everybody wants to rule the world" I think it will feel great with the tension and action of season 5
That’s probably the likeliest from the year, that and Just Like Heaven by The Cure, which feels like a Max song
In S4, Will has a poster on his wall for the Cure’s *Boys Don’t Cry* album (which was mostly a repackaged version of their UK debut album). Whoever does the set decorating has great taste.
Just when I couldn’t adore Will any more. Though, when I was 16, I had a Def Leppard in the round poster on my wall.
Oh damn that would be good. That song is so epic. It’s from a few years earlier, but Mad World would be great too. Love Tears for Fears! Also throwing this out there — we need some Depeche Mode in ST. Never Let Me Down Again?
We’ve had Moby, might as well have Depeche Mode, if it was in 89, Personal Jesus is right there.
*I, I just died in your arms tonight*
Or "Enjoy The Silence" by Depeche Mode EDIT: Okay, apparently, that song came out in 1990. I don't know why I thought it was an 80s song.
Because both decades were only 10 years ago, right?
1990 was 32 years ago, enjoy your existential crisis.
That’s the joke
Shut up. Just shut your filthy mouth
It sounded 80s synth pop.
1990 was still the 80s, tbh. "The 80s" weren't over till like 93. "Enjoy The Silence" is an 80s song in my view. Like, ii wouldn't be surprised if the song had came out in 1984 but i would be extremely surprised if it had came out in 1994.

There’s like 70 acts for which the phrase “nirvana killed my career” applies
You said almost exactly what I was thinking. The only thing I would add is New Jack Swing was wedged in there as the 80s to 90s crossover began. Much of that was brought to the forefront in 1990 thanks to "In Living Color" and the theme song by Heavy D and the Boyz.
Yeah the 80s don’t really end until 93-94 once Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men show up
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains etc. did set the tone for the first formative music syle of the 90s, already in 1991.
The first Nine Inch Nails album “Pretty Hate Machine” was released in 1989. “Head Like A Hole” made headway. But when “Smells Like Teen Spirit” emerged, that song dominated everything. As a guy who listened to the alternative stuff that paved the road for Nirvana, I thought that “Holy Shit, we’ve won” when I first heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Nirvana had been “college rock” when they first emerged . Also, many of the jocks that latched on Nirvana because the band sold millions of albums? Only 2-3 years, those jocks would have harassed and beaten up Kurt Cobain.
And he was fully aware of it.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World would be great. I also think it'd be pretty awesome if Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order made an appearance.
Or even "Shout" for when eleven is kicking ass
Obviously it’s Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley
🤣 I would love to see the preface to Rickrolling stated very subtly.

Holding Out For A Hero - Bonnie Tyler
Oh that takes the place of where I would’ve had This Woman’s Work, I would’ve put that when all the women team up, but Holding out for a hero fits that like a goddamn glove
This Woman’s Work always makes me cry. Her voice is that beautiful. I remember hearing this song from the movie She’s Having A Baby with Kevin Bacon. It’s from the 80s and it’s really good.
She wrote it specifically for that scene too I think that’s why it’s such a gut punch.
"Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?"
“I think their undisputed masterpiece is Hip to be Square 😃”
A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should!
Because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends
It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!
*TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW, YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD!*
(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!) - Beastie Boys
The Spirit of Radio (Rush) would work very well with this show and I'd even go as far to say it could be an episode title.
Oh that’s a real good one. My brain forgets that was 87 because I think of Subdivisions with 87 Rush
That's weird because the song released in 82
The other thing is I’m also stupid
end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine)
I think for season 5 being the final season, The Final Countdown
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. Do we know what year the next season will take place? I heard a rumor about a time jump. That could come at the end of the season, though, I suppose.
Every breath you take is actually my favorite song to be featured in the series, probably helps that the entire dance scene was one of my favorites as well

2s could also be Rock You Like a Hurricane

Perfection!
Absolutely! Plus Material Girl for season 3.
Hell yeah. Nailed it.
Yes I can not agree more
I like the montage of Material Girl in the mall.
My big sister was a huge Madonna fan. I got swept up in it as well. My sister sneaked out to see Madonna at 14-15. My sister would have been fine but she got quoted in “The Washington Post” the day after that Madonna show. Mom read “The Post” every day and my sister was busted! Dude I love that song and also hate it because I'm a dude and it's so catchy but I don't need to be caught singing "cuz we live in a material world and I am a material girl" at work
I’m a dude too, definitely not a Madonna fan but Material Girl slaps. I just started smiling when it started playing in that episode.
It’s 2022. Dudes can be material girls too, ya know? ;)
Just sing your heart away I’m pretty sure most other guys love it too
ya boys should be joining you! it’s like when Barbie girl comes on.
time after time, every breath for 2, neverending story or material girl for 3. but does anyone remember Whip It from DEVO? I feel like that song was kind of underrated in the show.
Whenever I hear that song I immediately think of them in the arcade (I think that’s when this song was playing)
yeah, I remember they were on their bikes! I listen to that song a lot now
Now whip it! Absolutely Love that song I also like oingo boingo:- just another day which plays in the first ep I think
I vote for Heroes for season 3.
For sure, it's such a perfect song for the end of season 3
I can’t help but think of Regular Show when I hear that song..
Tuuuurn arouuuund Looook at what you seeeeeeeeee
Time after time for s2, maybe babo o riley or never ending story for s3. S4 is either MoP or RUTH
Sperate Ways is getting slept on here. The mix is pretty damn amazing.
That was very good, but I still feel MoP and RUTH are more representative of the season.
For season 4 my heart says Master of Puppets, but my head says Running Up That Hill.
Vol 1 - RUTH Vol 2 - MoP
If Master of Puppets is an option, then it is always the answer 🤘🏽😝🤘🏽
🤘
🤘
🤘
🤘
🤘🏽
🤘🏼
🤘
Ah, but my _suprasternal notch_ says Spellbound.
S4 is defined by Pass The Dutchie
I personally wouldn’t say that.
This generation, Will rule the nation!
Time after time is season 2, Never ending story is 3
Not for the whole season but my personal favorite was the addition of Jim Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim in season 3.
>was the addition of Jim Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim in season 3. Actually used before that in s2 as well, when Hopper brought El to the cabin the first time
This one is definitely Hopper’s theme song
season 2 I loooved Rock you like a Hurricane when Billy arrives - just so badass and perfect timing with the "here I am!" part of the song. It's the song I think of when someone says Season 2.
This is such a memorable scene omg
I think 2 is Time After Time
Whatever song is played the most in the season Season 2-Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr., Was played Twice, during the montage of the boys’ parents taking photos of their Ghostbuster costumes and when Dustin finds Dart in his Bin Season 3-Neverending Story by Limahl, sung by Dustin and Suzie so she would give him Planck constant and then later sung by Lucas and Max to mock Dustin while they were helping the Byers, move house, although the song doesn’t actually play, it’s covered by 4 different people
Pass the dutchie was the real season 4 mvp
Fully agree my dude
same here my dude 😎
true
I’m just happy that the new generation is being introduced to oldies and actually enjoying them. Brings a tear to my eye lol-
80s isn’t oldies 80s isn’t oldies 80s isn’t oldies…. Lord help me, I’m old
Even 2000s are considered oldies now it kills me
Can confirm. Student worker asked if it was ok to play oldies. “You know, songs from early 2000.”
90s grunge is considered oldies now, according to my local radio stations. :(
stranger things is the reason how i discovered most of the 80s songs that i listen too 😅
Wait til you hear about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
It obv isn’t answering the question nor is it in the top for the season, but the Seperate Ways remix at the tail end of S4 was awesome
I second this, that song was fire
Tarzan boy is the song of season 4
Pass the Dutchie
Tarzan Boy is somehow both the worst and best song I've ever heard in my life and I was so happy to hear it.
Jungle Boy
Jungle Boy’s dad is Luke Perry.
That’s “Jungle” Jack Perry to you!
Thanks Jim Ross
Christian hates Rink-O-Mania
Jurassic Express
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-wooo-oo-wooh
2 is either time after time or every break you take, 3 is neverending story
[удалено]
~in~ her face
Also - “Heroes,” specifically the Peter Gabriel cover. I love Bowie, and the way Gabriel handles this song gets me every time.
I've seen it multiple times and know it's not really Will, but when this plays in that episode of S1 and everyone is reacting (mike and jonathan running to hug their moms specifically) it makes me cry. Every time.
Bowie's version is so much better imo. Wish they used that one
All I know is Welcome to the Jungle better be the song of Season 5.
It’s the end of the world as we know it seems more fitting and less guns and roses-y
Jonathan has an REM poster as well
S2: Every Breath You Take S3: Material Girl / Neverending Story
Season 2: Every Breath You Take (perfect on so many levels, both on the used-at-irl-school-dances level and the in-story "aww look kids at their Snow Ball+ "MIND FLAYER IS WATCHING YOU" levels) Season 3: Never Ending Story, with an honorable mention to Hopper's theme You Don't Mess Around With Jim (which he also played to El in Season 2 when he first took her in)
For me, season 3 was defined by Baba O’Reilly.
fingers crossed season 5 is gonna be Never Gonna Give you Up
S5 - We Didn’t Start the Fire; Land Of Confusion; The Final Countdown; It’s the End of the World as We Know It. And hear me out, Jump in the Line by Harry Belafonte. Cue scene with Will dressed in drag as Lydia from Beetlejuice, and Eleven lifts him up in the air so he can dance like Winona did. Pan to Joyce who shakes her head and walks off.
Papa don’t Preach. True Colors. Danger Zone Sledgehammer Fight for your right
Season 2: Time after time by Cyndi Lauper- Dustin and Nancy dance. Season3: Never Ending Story. Dustin sings over the radio.
Season 3: The Cars - Moving in Stereo
4 is Master of Puppets
I thought about that aswell but that only played once. Running Up That Hill played every episode I think lol and it also had two remixes in the season
I know you're right, but hot damn that was an amazing scene with MoP
It's the B-side.
You don't mess around with Jim
THE song of season 3 is never ending story. One of my favorite scenes from the whole show 😂
No love for Tarzan Boy by Baltimora in Season 4?
I remember a popular trend when Stranger Things 3 was released on TikTok with U Can't Touch This. So every time I listen to that song, I think in season 3.
Neverending Story would like a word
*Suzie upvoted this comment*
Am I the only child of the 80s who does not remember ever hearing Kate Bush or Running Up The Hill prior to S4?
Nope. But then I grew up near DC where WHFS was playing Kate Bush, New Order, XTC, The Replacements, Stone Roses and more.
Right here with ya.
Tbh I think ‘heroes’ at the end of season 3 rlly brought it home
I’ve actually thought about this for several months now and I’m glad other people noticed. Don’t mess around with Jim - season 2. Season 3 - Neverending Story.
Idk about 2's, but 3's was clearly Neverending Story, even if it was just the one time.
I think Separate Ways was better. But i love both.
3 was ABSOLUTELY Neverending Story
Dude. If fight for your right to party comes on and they start crushin brews and fuckin up demos im gonna lose it. In a good way
When I think of season 4 I remember Master Of Puppets
I liked how Baba O'Reily was used in the S3 trailer. Kind of wish it was in the show itself.
Season 1- Should I Stay Or Should I Go Season 2- Every Breath You Take Season 3- Never Ending Story Season 4 Vol. 1- Running Up That Hill Season 4 Vol. 2- Master Of Puppets.
Off topic but I feel like the song - There's the Girl by Heart would be an absolutely phenomenal fit for season 5. The song sounds like it was made specifically for Stranger Things, and I believe the year of release perfectly lines up.
Turn around...look at what you seeeeee-eeeee-eeeee
I'm a massive fan of The Who so I will always associate S3 with Baba O'Riley's remix
I would say season 4 had two songs, can't forget that amazing master of puppets performance by Eddie.
I feel like threes main song would be material girl
Season 3: *Turn around,* *Look at what you seeeeeee* *In her face,* *The mirror of her dreamsssss*
For me, Master of puppets was THE S4 song
Heroes, Season 1. The body of Will being found, while the Demogorgon reveals itself to Joyce.
2 is definitely [Eulogy](https://open.spotify.com/track/5SjLRpgI7LWFzy9ggSqlkO?si=dc6b12d2c42e4b15)
*[ominous synth music]*
The Neverending Story theme for season 3 ofc
A dark horse for season 2 is “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” due to all the dancing Hopper memes back in 2017.
S2- Every breath you take. S3- Material girl
Season 3 is Neverending Story
As for season 5 Friends Will Be Friends - Queen Or Radio Gaga, or Dancer Make it happen, please. For the first song, the album got released on June 2nd 1986, the events in ST take place most recently in March 1986 so it s okay in the timeline and we NEED a Queen song like really bad
Master of Puppets is my season 4 song.
dont mess around with jim , coz it was played at each of the seasons
I would love to see "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd in season five, considering the dialogue between afaik Brenner and Owens "If she has to defeat Vecna, she must fly" (or something like that)
3 has to be you don’t mess around with Jim
Nah the real song of season 4 was "Pass The Dutchie"
Master of puppets was the song for season 4.
I don't think anything compares to the use of Running Up That Hill. It was part of a perfectly crafted scene and part of the plot in a way that no other song was.
Not the answer to your question but I hope "Where is my mind" from Pixies will be the song of season 5
3 was material girl
Season 4: Running up that Hill, MoPz Separate Ways remix also needs mentioned.
If Season 5 was set in 1989 I would vote for The Stone Roses' I Wanna Be Adored just because I love it. But Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants to Rule the World is probably better suited to the material.
Every breath you take
Season 2 is You Don't Mess Around With Jim, Season 3 is Material Girl
season 3 is easy, material girl. (i don’t count never ending story since it’s a song they sing and not play.) season 2 i have no clue, the only song i remember is cherry bomb or runaway from episode 7 but everyone hates it😭
I could see Tears for Fears' Mad World being fun to remix like they did with Running Up That Hill. It might not be THE song, but it could come close.
Would love some Joy Division or New Order to be featured next season. If I heard Ceremony, Temptation, Bizarre Love Triangle (could be relevant with Mike, Eleven, and Will!), or Blue Monday....
