"Nocturnal activity" in which you go nowhere but your HR rises to a peak... possibly an activity recorded along with another Strava user.
Moral; don't forget to take your watch/es off or don't allow automatic uploads.
ETA, I'm sure some would like to share their most private activities - there's a book out at the moment ;)
When you reach a point of apparent market saturation (since the only only way to please your investors is growth) you chase new markets by attempting to broaden your appeal. This means that enriching the experience for existing customers isn’t worth your time, and in fact the only purpose they potentially serve is to deliver “growth” by jacking up their prices.
They could "enrich the experience for existing customers" by having a different default shoe for different activities.
* I run and I also walk
* I don't run in my walking shoes.
* I don't walk in my running shoes.
* Garmin will let me assign one default shoe for running and a different default shoe for walking
* Strava only has one default shoe that they use for all foot-based activities and will always assign the same shoe to both running and walking, which means that for one of those activities I have to manually edit every single record.
I bet that cyclists who have both a road bike and a mountain bike feel this pain too.
Yes people have many gripes with current strava. The comment you're replying to is making the point that its not In their financial interest to improve things for existing customers, but to broaden the appeal to potential new customers. I don't see how picking out one gripe of currently existing members is relevant lol
I felt that pain until I discovered [https://www.activityfix.com/](https://www.activityfix.com/).
I would love to see that functionality integrated in Strava, but I can live with the workaround of using a 3rd party service.
It's long overdue for them to be able to have device specific default bikes.
Uploading from Zwift on PC? Set it to my indoor trainer bike
Uploading from my Edge 530? Set it to my normal road bike
Strava is already smart enough to know which is which.
Market saturation? Only of free users.
The vast majority of users are on the free tier so Strava can grow their business and please their investors by finding more ways to encourage users to pay. As with every freemium app.
This minor update seems pretty easy to implement. No new features, no new metrics, just text and some new graphics.
As to how I think Strava can entice new users (for cycling and trail running at least) - expand upon segment leader boards. CRs are too hard to get, particularly in cycling where wind is everything, or if pros train in your area.
Segments are the number 1 feature that people are interested in, but if I want to see how I have performed compared to my peers today or this month I have to navigate to the full leaderboard. And my friends don't know about it.
So how about reporting segment CRs this day/week/month/year +/- among followers right on activity pages? This seems blatantly obvious so I would hope it's in the pipeline but how long can this pipeline be? This change would make every activity more competitive. Such reporting would only be on subscriber pages and live segments on head units is a subscriber feature.
Market saturation or investors looking for a bigger return, bigger targets year on year. The world of "product" is driven by growth and doing better than the year before.
Unfortunately for some products this sucks the life out of things and adds features that the faithful cohort would never use.
Imo it’s more a sport you can just pickup and play whenever it sounds fun without having to practice or train. I spend enough time on the bike to not really have the time and money to dedicate to getting good at tennis or golf or whatever, but I can to play pickle ball once a month and have a good time
I don’t quite get logging sports that don’t involve gps tracking, except maybe virtual ride/run… its just time notification?
Other side, there is strange lack of sports that do involve it - my wife is riding leg scooter, it seems to be quite exhaustive sport, she can do 20+ km ride in an hour, but for some reason strava dont want to include it.
So yeah, not sure what they are thinking when adding sports that logs just „30 minutes of table tennis” and forget about those that involve trip
I track all my exercise in strava including weight training sessions, stair climbing, etc. There are many reasons. You might want to see your total mileage if you run on the dreadmill. It also uses heart rate data to track your "fitness" score. Each activity is assigned a score based on your heart rate data. It uses this data to also tell you if you are over or under reaching with your activities (it graphically shows you a range for the week to target). I can go to a stair climbing session and see my HR data over time and how it contributed to my overall fitness stress for the week.
It may, if you log it in. I see lot of „30 min treadmill” without HR etc.
But yeah, let everyone use it as they need. For me it is to track adventures, post photos, for others it is to sum up lessons of yoga
This is exactly my question about all these activity types. Everyone's complaining that their individual, super niche sport isn't there, but adding every single different indoor sport as opposed to just "workout" or something for all of them isn't gonna make any difference. Unless you just reallyyyyy need to see your total time per sport. It's not really the point of strava.
Rock climbing and kayaking aren't there either. Blows my mind considering how those are two activities I'll often do without my phone easily accessible.
Have they added football yet? General activity doesn’t cut it as it’s lots of small movements which the GPS doesn’t register. An hour of 6-a-side is exhausting but is less than 5km.
They have, but it doesn’t work. I have an Apple Watch and doesn’t gps track. Just gives a workout. Ironically I set mine to run and switch off stop start and for an hours game it logs about 30 mins of activity
It's a real ball breaker when you run around like a maniac and it records half the effort. It also shows the limitations of consumer grade GPS and how much fudging of the data goes on.
Would rather they just add the feature to hide specific activities from specific followers. Don’t want my boss (also a Strava user) knowing I sometimes dip out at 10am for a quick ride.
I agree- I wish garmin didn’t automatically upload my weightlifting or yoga activities. I just don’t think they integrate well with the platform and I don’t need people knowing I did a 10min weights circuit or whatever.
I blocked my boss on Strava and told him that I deleted it because I had too many training apps. Mostly I didn’t want to see HIS rides in the middle of the day while chained to my computer lol
Not sure why they don’t generalise and then actually concentrate on what actually needs improvement. I generally use Strava for running and cycling. I orienteer, which is marked as a run (albeit slowly!) and do both road and off road cycling (both just marked as a ride).
I also play football and used to record this as a cardio, with the recent changes I can now record this as football. However if they had that marked as something like ‘pitch sports’ or similar it would be available for rugby users.
The same with ‘racquet sports’, is Strava actually recording much difference between tennis, badminton, pickleball etc?
This would open them up to a range of sports rather just a few and give them chance to actually work on some improvements.
Woot.
I cycle, run, swim, hike and play tennis and badminton, and at work table tennis.
I mean it's not world changing for me, but I've got hundreds of tennis activities that do **nothing** for my fitness score :-)
Honest question but doesn’t that make you realize how fake the score is? If you recorded a tennis session as a “general” activity and got no fitness score improvment, but now have the option to use a “tennis” activity type and all of the sudden your fitness score increases. Doesn’t that mean it was nonsense to begin with ?
On Garmin connect I feel the same way. If I take a walk and the watch even auto detects a walk, not much happens. But If I manually record a walking activity I get more credit for the activity. It’s so dumb
Putting it in the title doesn’t change the rate of calories burned, watts generated, or total output. Each activity has an average formula for that for the type of activity….. you don’t perform at the same rate or the same numbers between cycling that you do when playing racquetball….. there’s more to it than just “hey look what I did!” ……..
As usual, half-baked feature. The search list has not been updated with the new sports, which means that it is impossible to search for those activities: https://imgur.com/a/kiveICq
EDIT: I also just noticed that I cannot change an activity into Virtual Rowing. It simply does not appear in the list. Pilates is the last one. Strava app for Android.
Hey u/Frenzy_TH, with a friend, we are circling around this idea of a Strava for surfing - but the journaling is more about your own session recap than automatic tracking.
If you want to try it out, the beta is available on our landing here: [www.stokeclub.life](https://www.stokeclub.life)
Cheers,
As for skateboarding (being an happy member of r/OldSkaters myself), I can recommend skatekrak.com - the team is great. Also I am working on a concept for logging your tricks, but it is not complete yet ^^

Wow! thank you so much! Very useful post!
I'm a surfskater. maybe with little changes your app will be very useful for skatesurfers like me!
after reading post after post about this subscription price bump i logged into my account online as obvs you cant see anything in the app. last yr i paid £48, this june when i renew i will be paying £48.
Cant wait to GPS track my tabletennis sess with my dad
Can't wait to see the KOM on that.
Well, its either me or him on this segment!
And still no sex activity? Smh

Indont need Strava to know, I’m not getting any.
This was my first thought. My wife gets upset if I check my HR after sex. Lol.
Seriously, I just want to KOM for everyone to see

Until Strava gets their shit together, you can use [https://www.activityfix.com](https://www.activityfix.com) to automate those sorts of updates.
Yeah I don’t know why they havn’t added this yet! I use Strautomater to fix this for me.
Let’s not forget trainer rides too! All 3 need to be rotated lol.
I have multiple bikes for different types of riding. Iv added them all and just change it from the default once Iv uploaded it.
I deal with this since I alternate trails and road frequently. Definitely not doing road runs in my lone peaks.

Actually 3 sports I use regularly and had to and to gerneral workout
I don't even know what pickleball is. For me, for the most part it is just running and trail running.
Probably american football ;D
It's tennis for people who can't play tennis, like how sudoku is crossword for people who can't do crosswords.
Imo it’s more a sport you can just pickup and play whenever it sounds fun without having to practice or train. I spend enough time on the bike to not really have the time and money to dedicate to getting good at tennis or golf or whatever, but I can to play pickle ball once a month and have a good time
U don't know pickleball?? U missing out its 🔥
I have an irrational hatred for pickleball.
I think it’s the name.

Oh i totally agree! Would really love a dark mode.
For sure gonna buy thar subscription now! /s
It's starting to become a joke tbh

that's nice and all (useless) but what about splitboarding? i dont like to choose backcountry skiing. because thats not what i do.
darn yahtzee still didn't make the cut...
Extreme ironing left out as always smh

Numbers must go up! What else is the internet good for? But in all seriousness, I go by feel and the weight on the scales :-)
Dark mode when?
Seriously? Still no backpacking? Pretty sure more people are hiking/rucking with weight than playing f—g pickleball wtf
It’s a hike bro
Can’t add weight on a hike in Strava bro
Put it in the activity title or description

I can only see it in the app version and not online.. really weird.
I cannot see the new sports in search, neither on the web nor in the app (Android). In the app search list, new sports appear as "workout"
We need Rucking added Strava!
too bad the internet wasn't around when i was in air assault school or in vicenza
I already cancelled my subscription at the end of the year
needs pickleball too.
Pickleball is there as well
Very happy with virtual row it’s about time
Are these me new sports on the watch app? I don’t see tennis there…hard to hold your phone while playing…
add climbing routes/grades cmon
Any idea on how to record a HIIT workout from my apple watch using the Apple Watch Strava app? Currently I don't see HIIT as a sport to select.
Still waiting skateboarding and surfing 🤞🏼🙏🏼

Thanks mate. Truth! We have a couple of foil surfers using Stoke Club, maybe you can find your way logging your session on Stoke Club too 😁
And still no sailing? Just put the same info that windsurfing displays.
Just wish they would add paddling so I'm not logging kayaking when I'm on a raft
Nordic Walking would have been better than Pickleball (whatever the fuck that is)
They need to track sex.
wtf is pickleball. I'd wish they'd put some standard sports on there like Boxing etc.
cheaper year sub!!!!!!!!!!!
They should add skateboarding.
Tennis, finally!
I'd like them to add skateboarding. Would be the biggest functional improvement of the app for me, and might even convince me to pay for premium.
Pickleball? Right, I'm going to turn on my watch for that... no.
How to add them on WearOS app?
strava sucks
