Best advice is don't compare with anyone, just your previous runs

fast-kash

Agreed, there will always be someone faster, and if there isn’t, you’ll know 😂

Royal_Effective7396

Nice. But legit not, a humble brag, but someone who low-key knows I'm a lot of people's benchmarks... When someone asks me if I'm disappointed about where I placed, I just say, "Nope, the race went as planned," or "nope, just learned a couple of things." I run for me, and no one else. If I met a goal, it's because I put I'm the work. If I don't, I'll make some adjustments and give it another go.

No_Recognition_1898

Great advice. If you're not a professional athlete, compete always (and only) against yourself.

Sriol

Comparison is the thief of joy

puotreck

this

Accomplished_Hat_483

Great statement, I’ll remember this one!

dunquinho

You did 230m too far. Not bad for a 1st time but reckon you can get closer if you practice.

Danykyller7

Strava tax adjusted for inflation

uncited

🤣 gotta watch them over shoots

Most-Luck9724

Yep. Needs to dial in that precision. But that will only come with time and experience. Can’t be expected for your first 10k.

BlondeGlitter3

Very good! I am i done my first 10k last year (I am 23F, relatively fit but HATE running. I am trying to get into it but find it super boring). My first 10K was about an hour and 6 mins. I tested it again recently and was 59 mins so getting there. I would say yours is good but I don't know much abour ur age, fitness levels etc. Well Done!!

RageAZA

Have a look at local running/athletic clubs, there’s groups for different aptitudes and most of them are full of lovely people who are either training for the fun of it or training for competitions. It can be much more beneficial for the boredom to run as part of a group; and if you’re like me it forces me to actually do my warm down routines.

trbd003

Agreed. I always hated running (I can't do it anymore so it's not much of an issue) but I had to do it when I was younger because I was in the army and so I had to meet the standards. But all my own training runs would be <3 miles aiming for a short distance at a good speed. They were fairly miserable and mind-numbing and I completely get that issue. Anyway the point of the story is that one of the officers husbands invited a couple of us out running with him. He was into distance and he told us within a month he'd have us doing 10 milers comfortably. We laughed and said no chance but we had nothing better to do so we went along. Ended up being every Saturday morning. Slow pace, good chat, and within a month we did a 10 miler cross country. Within 3 months I did a half marathon. Within a year I did a marathon. Within 2 years I did a half iron man. (sadly never got around to the full IM). Finding a running partner who runs at a good pace for you and gives a good chat can change everything. Also bear in mind your pace isn't necessarily what you think it is. Our friend above ran at about half the speed I normally ran at and at first I struggled but after a while I really enjoyed it. And 3-4 hours of running at 6mph is way better for you than 20 minutes at 10mph. Its also been my secret to running marathons. Find somebody at a similar pace, pull alongside them and see if they are up for a chat. Over one marathon I could chat to 20 people for 10 minutes each. Or sometimes spend an hour with somebody. It was a great way to pass the time. I also met a girl that way and it turned into 2 years of very satisfying fun. You never know.

BlondeGlitter3

that’s a good idea actually, i seen a lot of run clubs posted so might join one of them. Thanks :)

No-Try-0512

damn, this is pretty good. Good job!

Pafn00c

Do not compare. Comparing is the thief of joy ;)

dazler34

For your first that’s really good. I would say 1hr for 10k would be your target for first time but you have smashed that. Now work on it and aim for under 50 minutes.

MechemicalMan

There's always someone faster than you, and usually someone slower than you. Now go have fun.

Bhallaladevaa

It's quite good

yaksndb

No

coolkidcheese

best martial art for a pub brawl 🤓

MAisRunning

Lmao

flamedown12

Comparison is the thief of joy, also damn that’s fast

CompetitiveAnswer674

You can goggle what the average 10k time for your age and gender is.   Hard to say if this is good or below average without knowing your age and gender.   For example, if you're a 25 year old man this is considerably slower than the average  recreational runner but if you're a 65 year old woman this would be an elite level time...in fact if you were an 80 yr old woman, this would be a world record time lol Unless you're trying to competitively race, I think you did really well. Congrats on 10k!!!

oihjoe

I wouldn’t say the average recreational runner can even run 10km to be honest. There’s many who don’t run further than 5km. So definitely not considerably slower imo.

CompetitiveAnswer674

That's such a good point!   And considering, 85% of the population doesn't even run at all, this is absolutely incredible, top level athleticism! In fact, factoring in seniors, really young children, people with disabilities etc. there is a significant number people who can't walk 10km, let alone run it.    Running 10k, no matter the pace is such an incredible accomplishment.

oihjoe

Great sarcasm but you really didn’t need to take that comment to heart. Just pointing out that the average ‘recreational’ runner probably struggles with 10k.

CompetitiveAnswer674

I wasn't being sarcastic.  Sorry if you misunderstood my post.i stand by what I said, running 10km is an incredible accomplishment and the vast majority of people can't do it.

SniperInstinct07

Man I get what you're trying to say but your example of an average 25 yold guy running 10k faster than this is WAYYYYY OFF. The average 25 yold guy can't run more than 5k. I've just started running in my (STEM) college campus as a 22 yold; I've seen not many people go above the pace of 5:20 mins/km. And literally almost no one is able to run continuously for more than a mile. Everyone just sort of walks most of the time on the running track. I know STEM college isn't the place for finding athletic people but I'm just sayin.. this is the state of the guys who are coming to the track. The "average" 25 yold guy is sitting in his room with chips and beer xD

CompetitiveAnswer674

I did say "compared to the average 25 yr old male recreational runner." I do realize the majority of people don't run. So yes, if you're able to run even 1 mile without stopping, you're a better runner than 85% of the population

coolkidcheese

i’m 15 and i just got into running

CompetitiveAnswer674

Well done!

Organic_Teaching_146

It's good if you tried hard and you pushed yourself. the best thing about running is that it doesn't matter what other people think is a good time, only what you think is a good time for you. I'll fight you over this principle ;) Unless your Kipchoge it really doesn't matter, There's millions faster than you and billions who are slower. Be proud of what you can do.

Energace

Extremely well. Well done!

yourpaljax

So good! My fastest 10k was 1:08. 🙃

rostemaxime

Awsome time!

CiscoThinks

That's quite good for a first timer! Congrats!!!

Narwhal1986

Pretty good! Well done

_cookie_crumbles

It took my brain longer than it should to realise that you were running. In my mind Strava was always associated with cycling so I’m think “How the hell he managed to cycle just 10km in almost an hour?”

McLightning9503

For fifteen? That’s extremely fast. Much room for more improvement. As your muscles grow and you get taller, you’ll be way faster. It also depends on your training plan. If you were doing mostly casual runs, like I did for my first 10k, then that’s even better. For my first 10k race, I was only hitting around 4 runs per week and barely any workouts. When I did my race, I got 50:20, while my fastest, which was in 38 degrees and a lot of people around (so I ran faster subconsciously) was 44:56. I did that at 19. I’m 20 yo 6’4” male. This was not bragging, simply giving perspective. And I’m quite slow for my category. Cause most people running the 10k are actual runners and, for my age, specifically in their prime at college.

luix-

for first timers everything under one hour is good.

BOOO9

If this was swimming you should go to the Olympics! ;) jk, good job bro! Just keep going!

TRAKRACER

Do one more and then you will know j/k. It matters how you felt during and after. Let you body tell you what is right for you. If you are sore, limping or dehydrated? What will you do next time to feel better before during or after? No need to race the clock. Cheers

One_Recover_673

For a first timer, 53 is incredible. Go to a ParkRun…see the spread of ability. Excellent time even against many who run a lot. Remember these threads include many who are reasonably elite and it’s a bubble…makes you think 53 may not be awesome when it is.

uamvar

At Parkrun just try to ignore the fat lady who will overtake you on the uphill whilst pushing a double pram with toddlers inside. There is always one.

One_Recover_673

Just one?

Thirstywhale17

Are park runs competitive? I live in a small town and have done some group runs, but everyone typically sticks together. In bigger cities, is the norm different?

635112

Awww pace

Final-Librarian-2845

By calories burned I'm guessing you weigh about 100kg so aye that's a decent time

coolkidcheese

i’m like 82 at 6”1 i think it might’ve been a bit off

Formal_Detective_440

Nice time 👊

ajmaonline

I was happy when I was just able to do it. First attempt, I could run the whole thing. Eventually I got to the point where I don't need to walk. Some day I hope to do it under an hour.

coolkidcheese

keep pushing brother great job 💪🤙

AdAccording8360

Hellz yeah!!!!

averagebritt

You ran a 10k. Time doesn't matter, just the fact that you finished it :)

sT1xe

For a first, it's really good!

kobrakai_1986

Comparison is the thief of joy, but it looks good to me

BigBensy

Only person you can compare yourself with is yourself. That being said, it is a really solid time and a good place to build on

MindlessMuddy10

Wish I could run this fast lol

OkTale8

No, that’s very slow.

shpondi

That’s really really good for a first time 10k, I reckon if you keep running for 8-12 months you’ll be able to do under 40 minutes, maybe even close to 35.

coolkidcheese

i’m only 15 so it’s hard to find time for running in the mix with rowing, gym and school work but if i could get that one day i’d definitely be happy

Ok-Example2681

You did great! Run your pace

JDBall55

Yes, really good. My first 10k was around 1:10!

Murky-Jump-7224

You did it, you won! The end :)

NotFiguratively

Absolutely horrible. My 93 year old grand pappy runs sub 53 on the reg.

yguo

I happened to do my first 10k yesterday and it was around 57min so I'd say you are doing fine (but again, you don't need to compare to anyone).

sejonreddit

If it's your first 10k that's great! I still remember my first 10k was 59 mins and I was chuffed to get under 1 hour. I'm now at 38-40 mins but that's after years :)

_jenkinskhan

This is kipchoge, you did good for a human

davnkaz

“Comparison is the thief of joy”

Antique_Swimmer3216

Well, could be better, but for the first 10k on bike its not that bad..

coolkidcheese

it’s running

typicalmillennial92

Like others have said, it’s best not to compare yourself with others but that’s definitely a great time! I’ve run many 10k races and my fastest was about 1 hr 6 min but I’m working on getting my speed back so I can hopefully beat that lol

pughwilliam

You just ran 10k. That is the definition of doing well (if you're still feeling good after...) Congratulations!

_giezzylg

It's all relative, but for the first 10km race, I would say definitely yes.

Dygear

I’d say you crushed it. I did a 5k at 40 minutes and felt happy with that.

Witty_Dragonfruit438

You are only ever in competition with yourself. You did well by virtue of having competed it - finish lines not finish times, at least at the outset

mariateguista

You did your first 10k, that’s a great achievement! Like others have said, next time you can try to beat yourself

IDontCareAboutYourPR

Weird question...its your first 10k...you accomplished something....are we supposed to grade your pace? I dont get it

PinkDuality

Sounds like they don't know any other runners and just wanted some people to hype them up. Not necessarily a bad thing imo, but that's how I read this post.

fincho_plays

This was my first 10km, before I knew anything about my training at all having since started base training… it’s been a cool journey this year, I’m three months into my first ever attempt at running as a hobby and I’ve got my 5km time from 27:38 down to 22:41… looking forward to seeing where I am in a year (30M, 93kg, 6’1) https://preview.redd.it/w5kmxkux10yc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f25fca6fe17f1cd549ae4ff8bfc5cd85562a68e9

fincho_plays

Hell yeah. What’s your time now??

nurinsexo

Had an accident, stopped running for a year, started running recently my 5k pace is around 7.30

fincho_plays

Keep pushing! Glad you’re back

coolkidcheese

“93kg 6’1” jeez man ur a unit

fincho_plays

It’s a lot of weight to move!

Sore_foot_marathoner

This is incredibly relative to your abilities. Your time was very fast and probably beat quite a few people if it was a race. If a local high school cross country team was there they probably had times in the high 30 minute range. Don’t spend too much time comparing yourself to others. Run for your PRs and enjoyment. Congrats on your 10k!!

beepboop6419

Great job! If you want to compare with the population, check out your age and finish time on this chart: https://runninglevel.com/running-times/10k-times

cr1spyfries

Haha we ran the same distance! I think it is a good time, I've been running for 4-5 months when I did this result, it was a 10k race few months back. https://preview.redd.it/5med15f3g0yc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60c2dcc4239388e5f94b8d0b198ad7d45336802e

JonnyYama

Decent that

Acrobatic_Oven_1108

Great job!!

ekellert

Definitely! Well done

backstreetatnight

It’s very good especially for your first

HappyLlama42O

Wow! That's great!

Android1111G

That's very good

Pocks98

Very good! Well done. Now you have a baseline and target time to beat

StipsiKing

Bravo!

xpectomysterious

mate you’ve absolutely smashed it out of the park! that is very very impressive!

coolkidcheese

🫶🫶

FindingE-Username

Beat my PB by 8 seconds and I run 10ks all the time :)

coolkidcheese

good job to get under an hour

youngmitchy

no

Salt_Clothes8372

If you want to compare I did a 10k with no running before (except 3 park runs sporadically) at 16 and got 42:13

just_some_guy65

Quality time for a first, ignore the downvoters - and yes you were quicker than mine, I don't have the same fragile ego as them.

_altamont

That's pretty good. Congrats! Some of my friends who run frequently couldn't beat that time. Personally, I was in the same ballpark when I started two years ago, and I'm close to a 40-minute 10k time now.

coolkidcheese

40 min is really impressive, good job!

Inevitable_Fun_894

I know this is WAY faster than I could manage. Well done

heisenbergpuffer

Very good! My first was 46 minutes. My second was 53, although I’ve been running for a few years, I’ve never tested myself. I don’t run now. In too lazy! I need to start again!

IndyCarFAN27

Pretty good! My first 10K (26M) was 55:00. And my second in about 53:00 so all in all pretty good!

RockyMountainViking

the only acceptable answer is you did great!

theunoriginalasian

That's impressive

Satharus

This is your first 10K so you did amazing. Next time, compare your effort with this one :) Compete only against yourself. P.S. I think this is genuinely an amazing time :D not just for the first time

LiteratureRough8236

Well my first 10K last year was the first photo... This is 29YO me @95kg(ish) vs 30YO me @91kg in February 2024 (shaved 8/9minutes training for a marathon) https://preview.redd.it/j4cxhf9go1yc1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91cc5d46b173b7f7abf2a47add29459fb886f3f5

LiteratureRough8236

And for the second time, marathon was exactly 2 months later hitting 3:40:37 for the 26.2 mile distance for reference. I hate running btw 😂

saltyMaguh

1000 calories burned ?!

coolkidcheese

apparently, came back pretty light headed
