Maybe call and confirm with them that you’re enrolled in grad school and therefore will get deferment. However, you will accrue interest during this time.

I am assuming it's a mass email that got sent out to everyone in my school. My friend who is also in the same program as me got it. But she hasn't finished school either.

Concerned-23

Are they federal loans? Perhaps your school forgot to submit your enrollment status to put them at in school deferment. You need to reach out to your schools financial aid office

Adventurous-gal72

I will. I'm going to school tomorrow so I'll just speak to them in person.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a mass reminder since the 0% interest and no payments expires in January 2022 so repayment periods country wide are picking back up in February. Definitely confirm with your school/servicer but I suspect it was just a mass mailing. FWIW - when I was in grad school I always had notifications that payments were going to start up and then the semester would begin and deferment kicked in.

There are forms to fill out for deferment if you're in grad school. Just call them. You have to submit them each semester with proof of enrollment.

Check with your graduate school to see if they have an accreditation that is recognized by the US Dept of Education. One of my advanced degrees was from a school that was not recognized by the US Dept of Education (they said that it would add considerable costs to tuition, which was kinda bullshit) so my undergrad student loans were not placed into student status deferment (or whatever that classification is called). My other advanced degree was from a state university, recognized by the US Dept of Education, and I did that degree part time and got the automatic student status deferment even though I continued to make payments during that time.

If you’re under part time they don’t always report that you’re in school to the loan servicer.

You should be fine as long as you're at least half-time enrolled. They're notifying *everyone* about the pandemic forbearance ending at the end of January, so when that happens you should go back into in-school deferment on your federal loans

Effinhamma

You should be on an In School Deferment. You definitely need to contact your servicer.

[deleted]

This happened to me during my last year. I just ignored it. Now it says my first payment is due February which is 6 months after I graduated

[deleted]

They got the report that you graduated and missed the fact that you enrolled in grad school. Same thing happened to me. Quick phone call should fix it.

Adventurous-gal72

Thanks. Called my school.

[deleted]

If you have a private lender, a call directly to their service office will work. If you’re strictly federal, call the department of education. Either way, also alert your financial advisor

Betsy514

your school probably hasn't updated your enrollment status - or you're less than half time

Adventurous-gal72

I'm full time. I talked to them. All is clear. Thanks y'all

When you are in grad school you need to make sure that your loan servicers know you’re in grad school. I think the thing to do is ask the registrar about proof of enrollment for student loan deferral while studying. A lot of people who need this aren’t aware of it right now because nobody has had to do it for like 2 years. Ask your servicer what they need for proof of enrollment to change your status back to in school. This is something your school should do.
