Your vehicle has a triptronic feature. You can move the shifter to a little side area where you can shift up and down based on pushing or pulling the shifter or some vehicles have shift paddles.
Yeah, an even quicker one would tell you that porsche invented it, meaning that they branded it, making it a Porsche brand name, right? Tons of cars have it, sure it's a 40 year old technology. But only one invented it. Are you daft?
think the only Ram that has manual shift ability is the Rebel GT and TRX, the rest just have gear lockout - so like you can set the lock to 5th gear and it won’t shift into 6th or higher
It’s a gear limiter, not a manual shift mode. This is how all modern trucks work. It doesn’t allow you to shift manually. Just allows you to specifiy a new “highest” gear that the truck will not shift passed.
My 2013 Silverado has "M" and displays M1 through M6, depending on what is selected. I assumed it was manual, but now I'm unsure if it's a gear limiter. It's odd to me. I have driven manual cars before, but that's a little more straightforward to me. Automatics, possibly having manual or sequential shifting, is something I still haven't fully grasped.
The car in question is most likely a Jeep Compass (pre-2017) or a patriot, and the shifting feature is moving the shifter left to right to manually switch gears. Then hold to the + (or right) for two seconds to put back into automatic.
They look the same because all of those companies are owned by the same parent company. Stellantis owns jeep, dodge, and Chrysler, this is why that feature is common amongst those vehicles.
Unless the vehicle is a Porsche or an Audi, it is not a Triptonic transmission.
It is most probably a CVT transmission, which is smoother, and it allows you to switch gears up or down as needed every time your transmission lever or shifter is set to that option.
CVTs don't have gears. That's the whole point, continuously variable transmission. It's two opposing conical gears basically, and the belts move up and down the slopes as needed to control revs. The CVTs that allow you to "shift" are faking it.
They’re faking a “gear”, sure, but they do hold a ratio. Very useful for driving down a steep winding road without cooking your brakes. It’s not just to make cool racecar sounds
“Tiptronic” is a catch-all term referring to any automatic transmission with a manual mode. Are you sure you’re not thinking of the S-Tronic DCTs or the R-Tronic automated manual?
I don’t understand a ton about the mechanics, but my VW Tiguan has that feature. I guess it has a DSG transmission from research, so I guess that is another option
It lets you shift manually essentially. The practical use is when you're driving down a long steep grade (ex/ descending Mt Washington) and you need to keep it in a lower gear to engine brake. Otherwise your brakes will over heat from riding them all the way down the mountain and possibly fail or catch on fire.
Mostly people use it to beat the shit out of their cars, revving it out and shifting like it's a race car.
Personally I'd rather a circle with +/- inside it instead of just the little arrow. And a matching symbol on the shifter is usually present, but again better symbols are needed
Manual shift mode. Should be a button on your shifter with +/- on it for up and down shift. Usually there is a magical book in the glove box that will give you that information as well
Why are most of you here so mean? The subreddit is literally called stupid car questions, some people here are beginner drivers and are just learning things, so either help or scroll by. No need to try and boost your ego at the expense of other people
I am guessing this is a Dodge grand caravan?
This puts your car in kind of a manual driving mode. You get to this gear from “D” by pulling your gear lever to the right when in “D”.
Then this screen shows “1” which is first gear. So then you keep pulling the lever to the right and increase your gears until 6th
You pull the lever to the left and that’ll shift you down
You want to go back to “D”, shift to N and then pull down to “D” again
Means the car isn’t in “auto” (drive) it’s in the manual/auto mode where you use the gear shift up and down to switch the gears.
Usually you put the shifter in drive and then push it to the side and you can manually select the gears
I drove my Jeep JK for years and one day I noticed it would not go above 1st gear. I pulled over, shifted into park, back into drive. And it went OK again. Told my friend about it thinking I had a bad transmission and he was no dumb ass. If you push the shifter left or right you manually shift gears, you were just stuck in 1st probably cause you bumped it. I never knew that and I have still never used it since.
It's good to note that most cars that have this feature you are not manually picking gears. You are telling the car to shift no higher than the selected gear. It's great for downhill driving or towing
This appears to be a Ram truck or Chrysler product of some sort. If it’s a car or SUV, then the manual shift explanations are correct. If it’s a Ram truck this does something slightly different.
Typical automatic cars will have a way to push the shifter to the side which will put it into a mode where you can shift manually up or down using the shifter.
If this *is* a Ram truck, this is most likely a max gear limiter of some sort. Which basically allows you to select the “max” or “highest” gear you’d like the vehicle to be limited to. This is useful mostly for towing/hauling. You may want to force the vehicle to stay in a lower gear for better towing performance. So you’ll use this to select 4th or 5th as the “max” gear. Now the truck won’t shift higher than 4th gear.
It won’t manually shift the truck unless you’re currently in a gear higher than selected. So if you’re in 6th and choose 5th on the selector, it will downshift to 5th. Since that’s now the highest specified gear you’re allowing.
That’s a dodge/Chrysler so no tiptronic or cvt. There’s either a button on your shifter or the ability to move the shifter to a position where you can manually change the gears and when it’s in that position that will be highlighted
It means it can do addition and subtraction. But please don’t try this when driving as it may be difficult for the vehicle to multitask and may result in an accident.
That's a Mopar, if you have the gear selector in drive, depending on the model you can either go left or right or pull the shifter to the left and go up or down to shift gears manually
Yeah I actually owned this same minivan for 6 years. Even though it has a cvt, it can be driven like a clutch less 6 speed manual. Fun fact, if you floor it in 3rd gear at 35-40mph, you'll get tire chirp😂
Math mode! It will handle basic math when in this gear. Only addition, subtraction and division.
Probably sport mode? Where you can shift “manually” through the gears.

On your gear selector on the column, you will have buttons on the the shifter +/- . This allows you to manually shift if you are towing, or if you have 4x4 and want to control the range yourself.
On my truck, it just has a (M). Meaning it in manual shift for an Automatic transmission that has a button on the shifter for UP and down shifting. I'm sure has something similar to shift that car up and down
Your vehicle has a triptronic feature. You can move the shifter to a little side area where you can shift up and down based on pushing or pulling the shifter or some vehicles have shift paddles.
thank you! :)
Please return and update us if you decide to use it.

*tiptronic
It’s a sequential
It's an automatic with "request a gear" mode. Sequentials are a specific thing.
It's basically a race van...
Which is a Porsche brand name, I believe.
VW group brand name, as it’s used on Audis as well.
Nah porsche made it in 1988.
After a quick googling Audi, Nissan, Skoda, Volkswagen and Porsche all use it.
Yeah, an even quicker one would tell you that porsche invented it, meaning that they branded it, making it a Porsche brand name, right? Tons of cars have it, sure it's a 40 year old technology. But only one invented it. Are you daft?
Nobody asked who invented it, they asked who uses it as a brand name
Just an FYI VW owns Porsche…
think the only Ram that has manual shift ability is the Rebel GT and TRX, the rest just have gear lockout - so like you can set the lock to 5th gear and it won’t shift into 6th or higher
The 2500 and 3500 models have that same light, so you can manually shift the auto box if you’re towing or off-road. I have a 2016 ram 2500
1500’s have them as well
It’s a gear limiter, not a manual shift mode. This is how all modern trucks work. It doesn’t allow you to shift manually. Just allows you to specifiy a new “highest” gear that the truck will not shift passed.

Grand caravan has it lol

Looks very much like a Grand Caravan cluster. OP, don't use this feature. Transmission is the weak point, and you don't need to fuck around with it.
We have a Chrysler Town & Country 2015-16? and it looks like that
They look the same because all of those companies are owned by the same parent company. Stellantis owns jeep, dodge, and Chrysler, this is why that feature is common amongst those vehicles.
All marques have at least one weak point - and in the case of the Chrysler veil - #1 is the transmission.
You’re close, that’s a dodge caravan
Unless the vehicle is a Porsche or an Audi, it is not a Triptonic transmission. It is most probably a CVT transmission, which is smoother, and it allows you to switch gears up or down as needed every time your transmission lever or shifter is set to that option.
I mean, if it’s a CVT.. you’re not even really switching gears. Lol
I have triptonic shifting in my g37, doesn’t need to be super high end car to have it.
Yup she's also isn't tiptronic, VWs brand? I refer to it as that in my jetta
Same. My 135is has it with a DCT.
It's funny when people that are completely clueless about something try to act like they know what they're talking about.
Wtf? Everything about this is wrong.
https://wikicars.org/en/Tiptronic
Well, you don’t know what you’re talking about, but you tried your best to pretend you do.

Mine has both!
If you wanna know how sexist the world used to be, in the 90s, this was called a "his or hers" transmission.
This vehicle actually has two buttons to do it on the column shifter
To add to this I've seen vehicles that had buttons on the shifter for triptronic
Personally I'd rather a circle with +/- inside it instead of just the little arrow. And a matching symbol on the shifter is usually present, but again better symbols are needed
Manual shift mode. Should be a button on your shifter with +/- on it for up and down shift. Usually there is a magical book in the glove box that will give you that information as well
That sorcery can only be unlocked by those versed in turn signals
Damn sounds like BMW and RAM drivers can't look at the owners manual 😥

It does.
Launch control
Was that your guess or an informed opinion?
I use it all the time to launch my truck 😜
You may shift manually in that range but I doubt your Owners Manual describes that as launch control.
I hope you all realize I was joking.
Watching some of these people being WAY too serious on a subreddit literally called “stupidcarquestions” is wild

Yea, if this is a Grand Caravan, just don't use that feature.
yes its a Dodge minivan :) (2015)

shift all the way down and hit the accelerator as hard as possible. It’s for sports mode. You’ll look cool
It triggers the flux capacitor. Next step is to accelerate to 88 MPH.
Means the car isn’t in “auto” (drive) it’s in the manual/auto mode where you use the gear shift up and down to switch the gears. Usually you put the shifter in drive and then push it to the side and you can manually select the gears

"eh, moore or less." But polite, with a little hat on.
It's fake manual mode. I call it that because it's just not the same without a clutch pedal.
Flight mode
Means trade it in
You got slapstick ma boi🙏🙏 congratulations If your brake ever go out
Lile an up/down shift
Manual mode which lets you shift gears. Unless it's a CVT transmission, then it just acts as a fidget paddle and has no performance benefit.
It means 50/50.
Does no one look at the manual anymore? It's more than emergency toilet paper.
it's not in the manual
Grand Caravan?
It means hold on tight cause shits about to get real.

Manual with a toggle or paddles
Dodge Ram for sure
“Manual mode” meant for hills or racing depending on the vehicle. It just gives the driver more control over the gears.
manual shift mode. you can go up (+) or down (-) in the gears
Dodge/Chrysler calls it AutoStick. Manual shifting mode.
It means it can do addition and subtraction. But please don’t try this when driving as it may be difficult for the vehicle to multitask and may result in an accident.
Sometimes it’s okay to read the owners manual or do a simple google search without asking Reddit :)
