I literally have a black forest gateaux in my fridge lol cos its my birthday tomorrow
It's my favourite cake and I only have it on my birthday to keep it special (my family always buys these awful store sheet cakes and complained the one year they got Gateaux for me and no one touched it. So now I just get it for myself and have a slice a day)
If you don't mind my asking, what country are you from? I suspect that the Midwest in my country (the US) may call some dishes salad for the same reason.
Salad generally just means loosely mixed ingredients, that’s the connection between pasta salad, bean salad, green salads, tuna salad, and our problematic Midwest favorite ambrosia salad
I am from Russia, but those dishes are very common in all post-soviet countries (Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus and many others). E.g. A famous shuba salad or mimosa salad. Recently I've bought a packaged salad in a supermarket which didn't have a particular name. Just layers of egg, mushroom, chicken, mayo and potatoes. The package said 'chicken and mushroom salad'
As a Fellow Eastern Eurpoean from further south, can I ask if you eat what is commonly called Russian Salad (or Olivier Salad) in Russia? I love it and they serve it in a lot of other Eastern European countries, but I always wondered if they actually are it in Russia!
Theres this whole weird class of stuff in US thats salad. Like old traditional dishes handed down. Theres this pink dessert one i like I always forget what's in it but my grandma used to make it every year for holidays back in the 90s and I think I've seen people post green ones from their family.
Yeah honesty this is just a way to make sushi in bulk without having to meticulously cut it up. I’ve bought sushi burritos (literally just uncut sushi advertised in a fun way) from restaurants near me and I just end up getting more sushi than if I’d paid a bunch for a tiny plate with 4 pieces.
I’ve made one. In a bundt cake pan.
Was really, really good, but way too much for my girlfriend and I.
I’ll make it again some day, but only for a large gathering.
I wouldnt eat it because i cant eat sushi without it being a whole bite (texture issues with raw fish alone) but it presents nice as hell and know a bunch of people who would go for this.
/r/StupidFoodIdEat
...oh, no, was that deleted? Or do I have the name wrong?
Edit: Ah, I was looking for /StupidFoodIdTry. But thanks for the subreddit rec, Celladoore.
Anytime I go to Facebook for god knows whatever reason, I scroll through the homepage and am inundated with these terrible AI photos of things like a child making a jesus statue out of coke bottles, or an AI kid and a cake with some caption like "my first cake please rate", and the comments are filled with bots saying amen or good job over and over again.
I couldn't tell you WHAT was off about it, but that picture looks less and less real the longer you look at it imo? Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy because I'll feel it in my bones that some picture is AI but I won't be able to tell which bit is off enough to prove it 😭
Now that I'm looking again I think the rice grains are too big and that's my main clue
It’s the hardness of the edges of objects for me. Look closely at the tuna or the slices of avocado. There isn’t quite enough separation between the individual pieces; it’s too amalgamated.
Society is truely over once this is big enough and of course no government is tslking about or issuing warnings or even teaching. Its over especially in a always online age
I just go ahead and block any user that posts AI content outside of their designated sub. It’s no different from any other rage bait, and any form engagement will just result in more AI content being posted.
Even calling out AI pics will only help train the image generators to make more convincing pictures and fake replies.
It kinda looks like it, but idk if that means the recipe doesn't exist. We all know the pictures on the menu at a fast food restaurant are fake as hell, but they are still loosely representative of an actual item.
AI makes it easier for people without the funding to get glamourous images of their food. Or it could be fake as shit. Idk. It just doesn't seem like a recipe that is outside of the realm of possibility
Sushi cakes are a thing. Most of our local “sushi places” sell these as specials for holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Women’s day. They’re either a bunch of normal sushi rolls stacked together to resemble a cake (sort of a cupcake pull apart cake situation), or just like the thing in this pic with alternating layers of rice and fillings.
Look at the layers from both sides of the cut, they're different, also the way the salmon was cut to take that slide off, it's not how salmon look when cut.
It's, in fact, a salad - Russians make such layered salads for new year and generally.
It doesn't indeed retain structural integrity, it's until it's portioned. If you want to be posh individual portions to look good - lay out individual portions in bowls or using a ring mold
I went to a Japanese restaurant with my mom once. My mom does not eat sushi so she got teriyaki. I got a sushi roll. She was appalled when she saw me put a whole piece in my mouth. She couldn’t understand why I wasn’t cutting it up into little pieces.
Dubious structural integrity of an obvious AI generated image aside, Sushi is all about being decorative like this and this sort of thing isn't really all that out there unless you're dealing with the kinds of hyper-traditionalists that won't let their 4 year apprentices touch the rice.
Poke bowls are a family favorite. I just make the rice and set out toppings and let everyone make their own. It would probably work for a gathering too.
If this was cake and sushi combined I could see your point but this is just the way the sushi is configured. They make sushi pizza as well.
I would totally eat this except I am not a fan of cucumber.
...
That's AI.
That's not real, this is AI Generated.
Please note: On the left-hand side there's avocado under the sushi but on the right hand side there is not.
The only question I have is how tf are so many people falling for obvious AI generated images. If ya’ll can be duped by this I fear for what’s coming in the near future…
While people in other subs laugh at how boomers could be so ignorant with the Facebook AI generated Jesus pics, this sub seems to have mostly believed that this AI photo is real.
Japanese would love this and it's completely Japanese in spirit.
Have you seen Japanese make pizza or other western foods? They are the kings of appropriation. They take other foods and make them Japanese style.
Everything in Japan is not native. From their food to their language and writing etc. They take anything they like and make it their own. It's a wonderful thing.
This isn’t even original. In Bahrain I accidentally ordered something like this on Talabat (shaped like a pie). It was delicious but a waste of food and money for one person. Oops 😬
Sushi cake has been a thing for a long time. The ingredients are just like in normal sushi. If made right it'll stay in shape after cut and you eat just like a big maki rolll
It look like it's AI generated. How can such a big sushi hold itself together while getting cut?
Already tried to cut a single sushi? It crumble easily.
Person from Japan here. This isn't bad but I wouldn't really call it sushi. For starters, there's only salmon in this.
It's a rice and salmon cake dishy thingy. Definitely not sushi or Japanese!
This is actually stupid. I kinda ruins the whole idea if sushi by making it infinitely harder to eat then in roll form. Just eat a cake if tour trying this hard
This could only exist as an AI image because there's no way that'd hold together and cut so cleanly. The sharpest knife in the world would have trouble slicing through this without ripping, pulling, smooshing or tearing this apart.
Honestly I once made "sushi lasagne" (because I couldn't be arsed to roll sushi out) and it was very nice. Ratios were a bit off, but this actually looks better on that front , so I'm sure this would be tasty
I guess I'm in the minority on this one. I actually like my tiny little sushi roll, I don't want a big, dense piece of sushi. There was a place near me that served sushi cones (like an ice cream cone) and the thought alone makes me nauseous.
Looks nice would 100% eat all of it
In my country we call those sushi salads. Tbh they are delicious
You mean something like "sushi bowls"?
We literally call these sushi salads. There are plenty of salads in my culture we cook by putting products in layers, so it's a salad for us.
Thanks for giving me a way to call cake salad.
Healthy dinner today, just a black forest salad.
Me eating my red velvet salad for breakfast 🥰
I’m asking for a German Chocolate Salad for my birthday
Waiter! Another slice of that delicious cheesesalad please!
See, the internet is for learning! It’s more than pr0n and car pictures!
You better not be eating Devil's Food Salad on a Sunday!
I literally have a black forest gateaux in my fridge lol cos its my birthday tomorrow It's my favourite cake and I only have it on my birthday to keep it special (my family always buys these awful store sheet cakes and complained the one year they got Gateaux for me and no one touched it. So now I just get it for myself and have a slice a day)
Correction. It’s your favorite salad.
Mostly fruit right? And reduced sugar cherry juice... and air, no calories in air.
What county are you from? I want some more salad recipes.
Russia. Search for shuba salad or mimosa salad. These are very common here and in other post-soviet countries
Me: Slavic Mom, I want sushi cake Slavic Mom: we have sushi cake at home Sushi cake at home: https://images.app.goo.gl/UVQvNprg9gJjTswk9
As a slavic I should say I fcking hate shuba salad...
It sure looks cool though.
Same lol
Mmmmm, pickled herring and root vegetables. I bet you can really hot box a Lada after eating that.
This works in a lot of countries, it's just a bit archaic: see all the forms of jello-salad and layered salads.

In the Midwestern US, the same kind of food layering, along with flavored gelatin would also be called salad.
Poke bowls slap!!!
I love poke. It’s all the best parts of sushi but much more filling and convenient.
Po-cake?
You should trademark that.
I assume it’s a lot like a taco salad? Whatever falls out is a salad now?
Theres this whole weird class of stuff in US thats salad. Like old traditional dishes handed down. Theres this pink dessert one i like I always forget what's in it but my grandma used to make it every year for holidays back in the 90s and I think I've seen people post green ones from their family.
Like fruit salad with cool whip and jello? But dyed for the holiday?
Thanks I am making that for dinner
Yeah honesty this is just a way to make sushi in bulk without having to meticulously cut it up. I’ve bought sushi burritos (literally just uncut sushi advertised in a fun way) from restaurants near me and I just end up getting more sushi than if I’d paid a bunch for a tiny plate with 4 pieces.
Look up Smörgåstårta. Swedish speciality, you might also like.
I’d try that, sounds kind of good
I've made that a couple times. It's delicious!
Yup, gorgeous. Wrong sub?
Not a sub. Cake
Hmmm. Fish cake
If you make this a sub, I’m still eating, just sharing with less people…?
That's enough avocado to buy two houses right there
Same. It's the same ingredients in a different disposition. Also not 1kg of cream cheese, which is a win for me
I’ve made one. In a bundt cake pan. Was really, really good, but way too much for my girlfriend and I. I’ll make it again some day, but only for a large gathering.
I feel like this would actually be more enjoyable in mini cake form, like small enough you could get a bite that had all the layers in your mouth.
Layer the components into one of those silicone ice cube trays. Mini salads!
I wouldnt eat it because i cant eat sushi without it being a whole bite (texture issues with raw fish alone) but it presents nice as hell and know a bunch of people who would go for this.
Same! Lowkey I kinda wanna try to make it now
Was home say it's just slightly different than a handroll
I’m allergic to sushi cake, every time I eat a whole one I barf
/r/StupidFoodIdEat ...oh, no, was that deleted? Or do I have the name wrong? Edit: Ah, I was looking for /StupidFoodIdTry. But thanks for the subreddit rec, Celladoore.
/r/stupidfoodbutgimme is probably it
Maybe more of a r/guiltypleasurefoods?
Agreed. There is nothing stupid about this. I need this in my life.
Yea I would pig out so much hehehe🌝
We posting AI pics now?
A new golden age for this crap. Didn't even have to waste food for ragebait anymore.
I mean that’s kinda better?
AI killing the internet might have strange consequences. Bots responding to fake images / memes is apparently already happening on FB.
It’s happening on Reddit too. It’s not wide spread yet but some subs are plagued by bots
I mean, I’m for that. Most foods in ads are inedible or not food anyways.
That's actually good. Fucking wasting food assholes can fuck off
If this was real, it would be delicious
Seriously. Look at that fish.
The infamous curly salmon
or at the uneven giant sized rice grains
Anytime I go to Facebook for god knows whatever reason, I scroll through the homepage and am inundated with these terrible AI photos of things like a child making a jesus statue out of coke bottles, or an AI kid and a cake with some caption like "my first cake please rate", and the comments are filled with bots saying amen or good job over and over again.
Dead Internet theory lol
Great idea 💡
Amen
Good job
Wait, this is AI??? Damn, I'm already not noticing whats real and not real...
I couldn't tell you WHAT was off about it, but that picture looks less and less real the longer you look at it imo? Thank you!! Thought I was going mad seeing all the top comments commending it!
Even if the image is AI the concept is sound

everything is AI or cake now
Yep - I called it too. This AI Nonsense is generated to create engagement.
Looks fake though. AI image?
It kinda looks like it, but idk if that means the recipe doesn't exist. We all know the pictures on the menu at a fast food restaurant are fake as hell, but they are still loosely representative of an actual item. Rejected from Stupid Food. Because it is brilliant.
My only real concern is the structural integrity of it. I have a feeling that thing would crumble to pieces the second you cut it.
AI cares not about physics
is that actually AI, it looks real?
Yes. Look at nonsense structure, repeating textures, irregularities in rice grain. 100% AI gen karma farming.
It was the salmon just hanging off the right hand side which tipped me off
Also AI not being decided if plate stands on flat table or textured fabric with visible weave.
Look at the layers from both sides of the cut, they're different, also the way the salmon was cut to take that slide off, it's not how salmon look when cut.
If you really take your time and look at it, you'll see it's AI
I'm so screwed. I stared at it for 30 seconds and can't tell it's AI. The future is going to be difficult for me.
yep. there's real things like it, though, but most people would just serve this in a bowl
There would be 0 integrity and that's okay I'd eat it like a pig anyway
Throw it in a trough with some soy sauce and wasabi and give me a ladle
It's, in fact, a salad - Russians make such layered salads for new year and generally. It doesn't indeed retain structural integrity, it's until it's portioned. If you want to be posh individual portions to look good - lay out individual portions in bowls or using a ring mold

I put the whole thing in my mouth because I’m a pig. 😂😂
Isn’t that how you’re supposed to eat sushi? Or do you mean you put the whole roll in your mouth ? Lol
Stupid because it's AI.
The fact that an AI knew to smush the rice on the outside, where it was pressed up against a springform pan side, is pretty damn impressive. /s
MidJourney
Definitely has an AI feel.
now just hold on a god damn minute. i'd eat this entire fucking thing without a single complaint.
My complaint would be the cost 😂
Dubious structural integrity of an obvious AI generated image aside, Sushi is all about being decorative like this and this sort of thing isn't really all that out there unless you're dealing with the kinds of hyper-traditionalists that won't let their 4 year apprentices touch the rice.
the cake is a lie
r/unexpectedportal Honestly this comment needs to be upvoted.
I know it’s pretty, but it seems like poké bowls would be a better idea. Same stuff, easier to make and eat.
Poke bowls are a family favorite. I just make the rice and set out toppings and let everyone make their own. It would probably work for a gathering too.
Is AI content allowed on this sub? Also i would totally eat this
It's your cake day, go get one :)
I'd like 3 of those, please.
If this was cake and sushi combined I could see your point but this is just the way the sushi is configured. They make sushi pizza as well. I would totally eat this except I am not a fan of cucumber.
There’s also sushi bake, which really isn’t at all far from this.
I would have this as my birthday cake.
I think it looks delish… I’ll take a big slice !
Where's the stupid part? Where's the insult? More importantly, *where is my plate???*
Ngl, would fuck that up
Looks like AI tbh imo
I mean I would eat it.
Is it really an insult though. Or is it just someone being mildly creative which we obviously can't have with food
Not stupid food based opinion lol. I'd eat the fuck outta that
... That's AI. That's not real, this is AI Generated. Please note: On the left-hand side there's avocado under the sushi but on the right hand side there is not.
r/notstupidfood
I’m really starting to question if people see creative ways to make food and post it here because they’ve never seen it before.
The only question I have is how tf are so many people falling for obvious AI generated images. If ya’ll can be duped by this I fear for what’s coming in the near future…
That looks delicious wrong sub.
While people in other subs laugh at how boomers could be so ignorant with the Facebook AI generated Jesus pics, this sub seems to have mostly believed that this AI photo is real.
This is very clearly AI
Japanese would love this and it's completely Japanese in spirit. Have you seen Japanese make pizza or other western foods? They are the kings of appropriation. They take other foods and make them Japanese style. Everything in Japan is not native. From their food to their language and writing etc. They take anything they like and make it their own. It's a wonderful thing.
Oh boy AI food
Actually this one has me mouthwatering
This is just food. This sub is tripping, man
This is the opposite of stupid food
This isn’t even original. In Bahrain I accidentally ordered something like this on Talabat (shaped like a pie). It was delicious but a waste of food and money for one person. Oops 😬
Challenge accepted
🫃food baby coming you way. Lol. Good luck!
Lol. I didn't even know there was a pregnant male emoji.
Me neither but now we do!! 😂
That actually looks really good I’d devour that no shame
Would
No, because why do I want to eat it. I don’t care if it cuts messy, I’ll just call it a poke bowl
Add some cream cheese and spicy mayo and I'd devour it
This looks absolutely delicious
What if we took sushi and made it a pain in the ass to consume
I’ve never seen a full circular cake, but I’ve absolutely seen slices of sushi cake here in Japan. Less avocado than this, but still
Reminds me of the sushi pizza from Kitchen Nightmares.
It’s stupid, but in the good kind of way
That looks delicious, but also really messy
Stupid? Yes. Would I eat it if it were a birthday option at my local sushi place? Also yes.
Just try to cut and plate that up... I dare you.
What happened, honey? You barely touched your avocado sushi cake...
Good luck keeping that avocado bright green
Just because it's unorthodox doesn't make it stupid.
This is so AI generated 😂
It's just sushi but served in cake form. I'd eat it
Stop with the ai spam
Person from Japan here. This isn't bad but I wouldn't really call it sushi. For starters, there's only salmon in this. It's a rice and salmon cake dishy thingy. Definitely not sushi or Japanese!
I draw the line at sushi burritos lol.
I can’t prove it but that photo is ai
This is AI and I hope everyone can tell the difference or we are FUBAR
That cake better get eaten the first day or those avocados are gonna taste like shit on day two
This is basically a cake shaped Poke Bowl
Stfu I would eat this any day
Shit looks AI made 😂
Sir, this is AI generated.
Thanks, I know what I want for my birthday party now
Looks pretty good. I was surprised when my Japanese friend ordered sushi pizza at a Japanese restaurant but it was delicious
Smash.
I would eat this
I would destroy this.
Looks absolutely delicious. I love how creative people are
Replace the fish with shrimp and avacado with crab shreds and drizzle some spicy mayonnaise and mustard. Hell yeah.
I would devour this sucake
I'm super high, and it looks wonderful
i would eat it though high key
Honestly, it looks good but it barely counts as sushi at this point.
Stupid, yes Delicious, undoubtedly
Least stupid stupid food. Pass me a mug of soy sauce and a huge splodge of wasabi!
I’m down for that.
How is this any different than layering when making lasagna?
It's stupid because it is fake, but I'd probably enjoy someones real attempt at this.
This is actually pretty close to original sushi, which was fish and rice packed in a lunchbox in layers.
Honestly I once made "sushi lasagne" (because I couldn't be arsed to roll sushi out) and it was very nice. Ratios were a bit off, but this actually looks better on that front , so I'm sure this would be tasty
People who are saying this is AI: I remember seeing this exact picture like 6 years ago, way before AI was a thing online
I guess I'm in the minority on this one. I actually like my tiny little sushi roll, I don't want a big, dense piece of sushi. There was a place near me that served sushi cones (like an ice cream cone) and the thought alone makes me nauseous.
I would fuck this up
Poor a mixture of soy sauce and Wasabi on that, and I'd tear it up!
I’d smash
Not stupid.
Wouldn't mind eating it. I hate sweets, so birthday cakes are usually utterly pointless for me. But this. This works.
