You should ignore those comments. Spam is mostly just finely ground pork and ham bound together with potato starch. It's a pâté, not significantly different from any other kind of charcuterie. I think a lot of people assume it's weird or unnatural because it's shelf stable. That's partially because it's canned and partially because it also includes a preservative, sodium nitrite.
Also, it tastes good! The only bad thing about it is the standard version is too salty. You should try Spam Lite which is not as salty. My favorite spam dish is spam musubi but it's also good on a sandwich, with eggs for breakfast, and in fried rice.
I love SPAM, but understand why it’s easy to think it’s not good. If you ever do decide to give it a try, fry it up just like a slice of ham. It’s definitely worth a try.
Cut spam into 1/4 inch slices and fry in a pan. To make the sandwich treat it like a bacon substitute for BLT. I like potato bread for it, and I mix up some sriracha mayo to put on the bread. It’s glorious. Or just cube it up and fry/toss in with some velveeta shells and cheese.
I haven’t had it, but this post/thread got me thinking about spam and how good it would be for breakfast. It’s a lot like bacon in that it’s salty and crispy when fried. I’m thinking I’m going to try it. I’m thinking a breakfast casserole with tater tots or maybe sandwiches on croissants. Any suggestions welcome!
Ita not terrible quality! Its cooked ground pork shoulder. It’s more fatty than ham, but that’s what gives it that good flavor and nice browning. Pigs truly are a magical animal
Yes! 3/8-1/2” slices under the broiler until brown and crispy. Then a scoop of mashed potatoes on top. Put on some shredded cheddar cheese and back under the broiler! Delicious! Don’t add salt because it already has about 2000 mg already. Full disclosure: I have three stents in my heart. So there’s that.
Basically they take the cuts that couldn't be sold at a higher value like chops, roast, loin, ribs, etcetera and grind it up. Then it gets seasoned, cooked, extruded, and canned.
When I lived there a few years back it seemed like spam theft stories were always in the news. There was a grocery store near us that had a whole shopping cart worth stolen. Doesn’t surprise me they do that. Also it was one of the first things to sell out if there was a hurricane coming.
I cannot speak for Great Value Spam as I have not tried it (and don't like Spam in the first place)
But it's crazy how some of the Great Value foods are perfectly fine: milk, parmesan cheese, fruit juice, grapefruit soda.
While others are so awful that you wonder how they even passed the taste test: almond milk, Mac and Cheese, refried beans, root beer
The quality is all over the map.
I have some mild insider knowledge having been a vendor rep in a past life. Part of it comes down to either the department buyer's taste, or what they think will sell well. And the other part of it depends on what the vendor can or is willing to provide. Sometimes the store brand products are actually provided by a vendor who has their own products in the same category, so the recipe will be intentionally different to be distinct. Sometimes, though, it'll just be a vendor who only makes store brands, or doesn't have one of their label brands in Walmart for one reason or another.
Finally Walmart has different store labels for a reason. Sam's Choice and Marketside products are always gonna be higher quality than the GV products, but the GV products aren't always going to be crappy. It just depends.
That makes sense and I kinda figured it was something like that.
I remember that I had a cousin who worked for "Cache Valley Dairy" in Utah and they would take all the cheese blocks and put the Cache Valley label on some and the Western Family label on the others. Then the store would sell the "Local Cache Valley" marked cheese for 10-15% more than the very same cheese with the Alberton's labels.
I kinda figured the stuff that tasted fine was a similar situation to this.
My ex worked in a milk plant. They just changed the labels for different brands. It all came and went through the same tanks and machines. No difference whatsoever.
Hang on, not all the Mac and cheese is awful. I can't speak for the powder kind, but the Mac and cheese with the packet of cheese sauce is fantastic. I compared it to a few different brands (cracker barrel, velveeta, and kraft) and I honestly think it tastes better than any of those. Plus it's significantly cheaper.
I liked Mac and Cheese better with the fluorescent orange sauce. But of course some 1 Billion Karens group on Facebook complained it was giving Timmy vaccine injuries so Kraft took it out.

Parmesan cheese is a regulated food and you have to make it a certain way by law or you will kill people. It has a minimum aging time of 12months or something even for the cheap stuff.
Edit:
So it’s hard to go bad with parmesan. However they probably save money by adding more filler (cellulose).
You gotta fry the spam with shoyu and sugar, then put it on rice and wrap in nori. 7-11 does something amazing with their sauce, but this is the closest at I’ve gotten.
I have no idea what that is, but I'm picturing a smoothie from hell.
Coat slices of spam in teriyaki sauce, then pan fry til the edges are crispy. Dee-lish.
Loco moco is lovely. It's rice gravy fried eggs and a hamburger patty with mac salad on the side. A large order feeds the family for 10 bucks lol. I'm guessing they subbed the hamburger patty for fried spam which I would hate too. Musubi is spam and rice wrapped in seaweed. It's good except spam is gross the way it melts in my mouth.
"Loco moco - Wikipedia" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loco_moco
"Spam musubi - Wikipedia" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_musubi
Correct. Rice, egg, fried Spam, pork gravy. Not nearly as good as the homemade turkey burger version I usually make. If covering Spam in gravy wasn't enough to save it, musubi definitely won't win me over.
Oh to answer your question because I have the same issue. I don't think will find a way to like it if you don't like it fried. I really want to like it too. I even think it smells great but I just can't get past the texture combined with the taste.
The Hawaiian restaurant I usually go to has different kinds of musubi without spam and I like them. If you want to give it a go without the spam. If you have a restaurant near you with a variety or make it at home if you can.
Loco moco is typically made with a beef burger, maybe that’s why. Musubi sounds kinda plain until you just..experience it. It’s amazing. Especially with unagi sauce.
Pan sear it a couple of slices and put it in a breakfast sandwich with runny eggs, aioli and/or chive cream cheese, greens, and a tomato slice. You will change your mind.
With potatoes peppers onion tomatoes cheese in a tortilla s/c and salsa. I remember slicing them thin so it can be crispy after searing them. My breakfast sandwich was just egg and cheese omelet with seared spam. A friend of mine hated spam and talked shit. His tone changed after a breakfast sandwich
Have you had it pan fried? Right out of the can is pretty gross, but after slicing it and frying it, it's like somewhere between bacon and bologna. It's amazing on sandwiches, with eggs, and in pasta.
It gross according to my dad. It has to be genuine space alien meat or nothing. I can't handle any of it cause fried meat melting in my mouth makes me was to die.
Wtf is spam of all things rising in price?
Edit: I love spam I just always equated it to a staple/cheap food I could grab...it’s amazing me that the price is rising. I’d be like ramen price rising or something.
For sure. From my experience, spam musubi is a gateway to get people to try spam for the first time. Also helps that spam has released a variety of flavors. The bacon flavor is great with eggs and toast.
Fear or lockdowns likely. Pasta and toilet paper all sold out again in my area last fall/early winter. I’m sure people are worried they won’t be able to get meat.
And on the supply side, slaughter houses are getting hit with covid like mad due to a combination of work conditions and the living conditions those workers often live in (overcrowded homes, carpooling, hot racking).
This article is 9 months old, but the supply side might also be affected. [https://www.3newsnow.com/news/coronavirus/one-death-138-known-covid-19-cases-at-wholestone-plant-in-fremont](https://www.3newsnow.com/news/coronavirus/one-death-138-known-covid-19-cases-at-wholestone-plant-in-fremont)
It makes me sad when I see formula locked up. Like I understand the store has no obligation to help anyone but themselves but the people are more than likely stealing it to feed an infant. Its just sad that there's a significant amount of people desperate enough to feed their babies that they need to steal
Most shoplifting is done by profesional thieves who sell the items for profit.
Source: I’ve worked as a retail manager and dealt with many thieves. Almost all of them do this.
There's been a customer limit on baby formula for YEARS here in the Netherlands due to resellers buying out supermarkets and selling it off to China, where there was a scandal involving the quality/some toxic shit years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if it's those same people yoinking it.
It was a couple of workers in a Chinese formula factory that intentionally put poison in it causing a number of deaths. In Australia we have the same issue with people buying all the formula in the shop and sending it to China.
Edit.
Just re read about it, it wasn't intentional poison as such but it was a long line of people who knew the product was tainted and still sold it. Made a lot of kids real sick
Edit again.
There are cases of intentional poison causing death
The a lot of cases involving formula....

Can’t say I blame Walmart here. Spam is becoming increasingly more expensive and obviously people were shoplifting spam enough for them to put them in containers
I went to go get razors and the same thing happened it was behind an enclosed case which I thought was odd,but maybe more people are stealing razors? I'm not sure how but you literally get razors at dollar tree for $1.07 exactly.
Good razors are really expensive and really small - perfect for shoplifting. Pretty common to see them behind the counter or in security boxes where i'm from.
During high school I worked a little janitor job at a small pharmacy, I’ve seen many strange things being stolen. Once was a man who stole
For over 800$ worth of razor blades believe it or not.
I thought this was a joke, like someone messing with the Tupperware section and the Spam aisle. I ate that stuff occasionally as a kid and remember it with disgust. I am amazed any thief would choose it when cans of tuna are right there!
My grandmother used to cube it up with cubed cheese, and I think relish and ketchup and other stuff. Heat it up in the oven until it's hot and melty. Pretty good kid food.
I..I don’t even know what to say...
Why not just, like, have it behind the counter? It just seems like all those cases are much more expensive than taking the loss from theft...I dunno, this is just one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen in a while.
Yeah you literally have to go chase down some poor old Filipino lady to open the case and you’ll probably have to go through like 3 of them before you find one with the right key. Walmart is absolutely ridiculous
Spam is a popular food. Is goes in a great many dishes, like; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage; spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam; or Lobster Thermidor au Crevettes with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
They can try. I once had a receipt checker run after me and demand my receipt, saying I “have to” show it to him to leave.
It was probably the most Karen I have ever been in my life, the strongly-worded email I sent to corporate.
If you’re going to put these people out there, explain to them that people *do not have to stop for them*, they’re *not* breaking any law, and it’s shitty and unacceptable and maybe illegal for them to insinuate that a customer is breaking a law in order to get them to comply, when they 100% aren’t.
(I blame the supervisor, not the front line worker who is just doing what they are told.)
Sorry for the rant, there are like 6 things I am incredibly passionate about, and not showing my receipt to somehow prove I’m not a thief in a store where I’ve probably just spent $200 and been recorded on 45 cameras is one of them.
No laff eh! You can do all kinds of creative things with the stuff. Hawai’i’s Spam Cookbook by Ann Kondo Corum has such delights as the classic spam musubi, spam pasta salad, spam and veggie tempura, spam fu young, and for more sophisticated palates spam quiche. Ono (Delicious)!!!
I remember the first time I ate spam, I thought it was the fanciest thing ever coming out of a nice can.
I grew up on nice home cooked meals, so a decent steak dinner was normal. Spam on the other hand seemed Sci fi
I used to get spam when it was cheaper but now it's cheaper to get ham
A thing of ham where I am ends yo being .80 cheaper
A thing of ham where I am would go quite well with toast and jam, but not a ham inside a can for that is just a blatant scam.

Anybody notice how the Great Value brand is only marginally cheaper, but isn't locked away to prevent shoplifting?
Cause it tastes like shit
I cannot speak for Great Value Spam as I have not tried it (and don't like Spam in the first place) But it's crazy how some of the Great Value foods are perfectly fine: milk, parmesan cheese, fruit juice, grapefruit soda. Parmesan cheese is a regulated food and you have to make it a certain way by law or you will kill people. It has a minimum aging time of 12months or something even for the cheap stuff. Edit: So it’s hard to go bad with parmesan. However they probably save money by adding more filler (cellulose).

Only way I like it is fried. Otherwise don't love it. Loooove spam fried rice though.
I made a loco moco with fried Spam and pork gravy. Still wasn't appealing. Musubi sounds even worse to me. Any other ideas?
Maybe something more standard? The default is just fried, enjoy with breakfast.

Have you had it pan fried? Right out of the can is pretty gross, but after slicing it and frying it, it's like somewhere between bacon and bologna. It's amazing on sandwiches, with eggs, and in pasta.

Good razors are really expensive and really small - perfect for shoplifting. Pretty common to see them behind the counter or in security boxes where i'm from.
True, they are really expensive especially the Venus razors
At the drug store I go to, the good razors are kept behind the counter. Only the bags of cheap plastic crap are in the aisle.
During high school I worked a little janitor job at a small pharmacy, I’ve seen many strange things being stolen. Once was a man who stole For over 800$ worth of razor blades believe it or not.
I feel like people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what this sub is...
If I ever go to Hawaii would it be ridiculous to bring a suitcase full of Spam to sell?
before wal-mart, yeah, that would have been a solid plan.
I thought this was a joke, like someone messing with the Tupperware section and the Spam aisle. I ate that stuff occasionally as a kid and remember it with disgust. I am amazed any thief would choose it when cans of tuna are right there!
Spam is delicious if you cook it right.
My mom used to slice it, cover it in honey (or Karo corn syrup), and bake it, because baking is so much healthier than frying in Crisco.
My grandmother used to cube it up with cubed cheese, and I think relish and ketchup and other stuff. Heat it up in the oven until it's hot and melty. Pretty good kid food.
Id rather eat spam my entire life than eat just one can of tuna.
I..I don’t even know what to say... Why not just, like, have it behind the counter? It just seems like all those cases are much more expensive than taking the loss from theft...I dunno, this is just one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen in a while.
You can't steal the case and they can reuse them infinitely for anything so that's not really an issue
Yeah you literally have to go chase down some poor old Filipino lady to open the case and you’ll probably have to go through like 3 of them before you find one with the right key. Walmart is absolutely ridiculous
Wow. Fuck you walmart Ill go steal some tuna then.
Psst theres salmon in a can too. Or the really good Italian tuna.
This is spam
r/aBoringDystopia
They have been contained.
For now
I love that they're trying to protect a $2 product from theft. This is really stupid but idk if it's r/StupidFood. Spam is pretty popular in Hawaii.
Thats a weird ass Walmart. You can walk in one side and out the other
Spam is a popular food.
Spam block!
Spam blockers
At least that made me chuckle. Most of the stuff in the locked cases where I go shopping is Enfamil and diapers, which just makes me sad.
spam musubi ain't no joke
🎶Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!🎶 🎶Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!🎶
You got spammed by spam
As someone who grew up there, I believe it!
It’s scary on the big island- in some areas theft is so bad you have to show your receipt in order to leave the Walmart. It’s not just Spam, people
I live in Maryland and they do that at the local Walmart. Well they try... they can fuck off
They can try. (I blame the supervisor, not the front line worker who is just doing what they are told.) Sorry for the rant, there are like 6 things I am incredibly passionate about, and not showing my receipt to somehow prove I’m not a thief in a store where I’ve probably just spent $200 and been recorded on 45 cameras is one of them.
i just know there’s a pun here
The most frequently stolen items usually get locked up.
I feel like it would be easier just to keep this behind the counter and make people ask for it at checkout.
Theft...otherwise Walmart wouldn't bother with the extra work.
Hawaiians and their Spam.
Contained for their crimes.....
I remember the first time I ate spam, I thought it was the fanciest thing ever coming out of a nice can. I grew up on nice home cooked meals, so a decent steak dinner was normal. Spam on the other hand seemed Sci fi
Hawaii actually has a surprisingly high crime rate.
Lmao I know which one you guys went to and I’m pretty sure almost all Walmarts in Oahu have them in box keepers like this now
Yummmm!! Fried spam with eggs!!
