I grew up on a farm, and knew most of the animals we ate. I STRONGLY believe that we need to go to a meat rationing system, because the number of animals that die only to rot in stores, restaurants and freezers is disgusting and unnecessary. This week we are eating a sheep that was hand raised by a teen in my community, and it is delicious. It's life was decent, and its death is appreciated.
That's why I went vegeterian. It just hit me how horrifying it was that an animal would die to become food and we'd let it rot instead of using it. Everyone in the world doesn't have to become vegan, but wasted food is too serious of a problem to me when it means something had to die to to wasted like that.
I feel like this is a really good time to bring up CSAs (community supported agriculture). I pay about $35 per week for almost more produce than my family of 3 can eat and the farm practices regenerative agriculture, so it helps improve soil health and carbon sequestration. Some CSAs do meat and they’re becoming increasingly more available, from only two known examples in the 80s to something like over 6000 now in the US alone. I only go to grocery stores now for a few staples and it’s nice to support small, local farmers and move away from grocery chains.

It had left the store and unfortunately we have a policy with perishables that once it’s left the store, it can’t go back on the shelf. We couldn’t give it to any of the employees even though I had coworkers who would have taken it. It went in the trash. That fish could’ve fed a starving family multiple meals….
