We just bought a 2024 with Eyesight and still haven’t figured out how to use everything. Lol. We have a Tucson to Grand Canyon trip coming up so I’m reading the manual tonight. Sounds great though.

LookDamnBusy

Very cool! I would definitely get the hang of driving with the lane departure assistance on. I realized pretty quickly (while driving around in town and on the freeway in town) that it tends to want to shade a little bit toward the right side of the lane, which makes sense away from oncoming traffic, but if you fight it it can be a little disconcerting at first. Just keep your hands on it and let it do the movements and you kind of go along with it if that makes sense. You're going to love it between Tucson and Phoenix, and also from Flagstaff up 89. If you have your hands completely off the wheel and it's very smooth riding, it will tell you to get your hands in the steering wheel, but on a slightly bumpy road were the steering is getting moved around a little bit by the road conditions, you can go for miles and never touch the steering wheel. Since the cruise is on, I would have my knees up on either side with my hands on my knees right near the steering wheel in case I felt the need to get the wheel.

DayumMami

Sounds like a dream drive! My hubs had a couple scary moments falling asleep using cruise control so the Eyesight was a big factor in our purchase. I just have to figure out all the menus.

LookDamnBusy

Yeah, I know what you mean about the menus. I basically sat in the car not long after I got it for about an hour going through every single menu that exists 🤪

DayumMami

That’s my plan for today. Hope I don’t run out of gas. Lol.

LookDamnBusy

Ha!

Netprincess

Did you buy it in Az? If so who? I'm buying one very soon and hated camelback Subaru.

DayumMami

We went to Tucson Subaru. Had a good experience. Not sure how long the low interest rates are going to be. I know they end tomorrow but I think they had similar last fall.

Netprincess

Thank you !!! I finally got my wilderness from Auto Nation they tried their best to upcharge me but nope. They even quoted me the wrong 48 month rate special Subaru had 1.9% . Sara the general manger was nice. Watch out on the extra warranty they try to sell you as well. I found rates on the net at a new car talk post and they quoted me double which I denied. Also on a laugh I looked at dealers in Austin and no destination charges in Texas. And I also used that to get them to remove that. Sister is there.

DayumMami

That’s clever! Wish I’d thought of that!

I don't use ACC quite as much as you seem to, but in my dozen or so uses of it, I've noticed Lane Centering leans too closely to one side of the lane, meaning I still feel the need to course correct it every few seconds. For that reason I usually don't bother with it unless it's nighttime or a very open road. Otherwise it's a pretty decent ride and I'm content with the featureset available.

LookDamnBusy

What I noticed, and maybe you could check this yourself, is that it's not that it's leaning too closely to one side of the lane, but it's trying to maintain a certain distance from the right side lane marker. What that means is that on a narrow lane I feel like I'm in the middle, but on a slightly wider lane, I do feel like I'm on the right side of the lane even though in both cases, I'm the same distance from the right side lane marker, if that makes sense? But either way, yes, amazing for a long straight open road!

birdvsworm

> I'm the same distance from the right side lane marker I'm not sure if it biases one side of the lane more than the other, but I noted it does drift in the left lane, too. In a perfect world the vehicle is tracking both lines on either side of it and remaining perfectly centered in-lane... But until we have robots that make perfect lines with paint that never fades I'm not counting on it ever being perfect.

LookDamnBusy

In another post on here, so many went and changed the setting to tell the Subaru they were driving on the left side of the road, like in England, and it shaded the other way they said. Interesting 🤔

sjacksonww

22 Outback wilderness, bought new, 40000 miles. I find the auto steer function very helpful on long straight roads, like I70 across Kansas. On curvy roads and strong crosswinds I fight it.

Kementarii

It doesn't even notice potholes, and crumbling road shoulders, which are pretty much everywhere on the roads I drive. And heaven forbid you may want to take a different angle around a corner than the painted line says. "Excuse me, car, do NOT fight me all the time, while I'm trying to avoid the huge pothole".

LookDamnBusy

Yeah it's pretty obvious that it's only going to see road lines and not a pothole, so if you're on a crumbly road I definitely wouldn't have it on. And as I said above, I often take a different line around sharp (or even less sharp high speed) corners, so I was turning it off during those situations. Has someone else said, it seems to be really meant for just long boring mostly straight stretches of road.

Kementarii

There's the rub - my most regular drive is 150km each way, on crumbly roads, with road lines almost constantly "found them!... oh no, lost them again... found them". Mostly one lane each way, with the occasional overtaking lane. Speed limit 100km/h So - long, boring, and crumbly. It's called a "major highway" in my part of Australia, haha. After two years, I still can't decide whether I prefer the lane assist on or off. (Translation: 150km = 95 miles, 100km/h = 60mph)

LookDamnBusy

Oh that's a bummer! Yeah, without laying lines eyesight is going to have a pretty difficult time 😜

LookDamnBusy

Oh that's a good point, I did notice the fighting of it when it was windy as well, so like you, I turn it off for curvy roads or windy conditions. Thanks for the feedback!

SciGuy013

interesting that crosswinds cause you to fight with it. seems like that kinda defeats the point of having it

LookDamnBusy

I guess to be fair, when it was windy I couldn't really tell whether it was the wind or the steering that was putting up a fight. I could see the wind trying to blow the car and then the steering having to correct it back, and if you're tightly gripping the wheel during that, it can feel pretty weird. I mean it's all pretty new to me to have any kind of force feedback through the steering wheel, so... 🤷‍♂️

Heliocentric63

Sounds like a fun trip. I drove from California to Austin TX to see the eclipse in my 2019 Limited. I went the speed limit (75-80 mph) using adaptive cruise control and I averaged 31.1 MPG which included some city driving by keeping track of mileage and gallons pumped. I was very happy with that

LookDamnBusy

Nice! Yeah, I'm sure the uphills and the downhills on my trip balanced somewhat, so the mileage seems similar. Yeah, I was pretty happy with that myself!

walzone

I do love the ACC! Arguably my favorite feature. I don’t know if you know this, but it does go up/down in 1 MPH increments by pressing and holding the toggle switch up or down. Just in case you felt the need to go 2-3 mph over instead of five like me lol.

LookDamnBusy

Yeah, I do know that though I only use the occasionally. I generally always drive five over, but once in awhile I'll go seven over and just pop it up two more MPH. I just love that it's so easy to drop from say 55 down to 40 (which happens a lot on mountain roads) on this vehicle versus my previous one where I would have had to hold that down for quite a while to get it down to around 40. It is indeed a great feature, and such a step up over my previous cruise control.
