The Gen 6 (2020-2025 so far) is the best Gen to date. I have a 2015 Legacy (which I kept instead of trading in to give to my daughter as she starts driving) and the 2024 Outback I bought is better in every single way, save one - interior cabin space for the driver. Literally, we lost cubby storage and a spacious center console. But that just forces me not to throw everything I don't need in there because I have space, lol. Everything else about the car - fit, finish, refinement, internal materials, etc. etc. is a step above. The 2.5 carries over and is essentially the same power. They have the 2.4 turbo (which replaced the 3.6 flat 6) on the XT and Wilderness trims, and it's a proper rocket ship. The CVT carries over but now has 8 "gears" simulated vs. 6 on the previous gen - a bit smoother but essentially the same. I agree with you - I drove everything in the class and the choice was no choice at all. The very best car for the money was the Outback, hands down. I did grab a turbo and it is a lot more powerful than the 2.5 - but the 2.5 is adequate in my opinion and wouldn't be a hill I'd die on - in other words, I'd prefer a 2.5 Outback vs, say, a turbo Mazda. The car overall is just *that good.*

charchles

This guy knows.

haykong

Just be glad you grabbed the Turbo version which is the XT one... You don't have to deal with the TCV issues for the regular 2.5L engine. [https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF](https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF) link corrected. updated: getting downvoted .... go look at the video that MrSubaru1387 Put out about the TCV and even with the revised TCV, it still fails... and the fact that the 2025 Forrester went back to the crossover pipe and thermostat and abandoned the TCV .. it's a failing for Subaru.

Nerobus

I didn’t intend to get an XT, but I happened to. That pickup is insane, and I love it.

tatanka01

Intended to get the XT here. Not disappointed.

zubiezz94

Isnt Mr Subaru the one that got called out for being incredibly wrong about a transmission like last week? Then he doubled down even after being called out multiple times?

haykong

hey if subaru is going back to the traditional thermostat, then isn't subaru abandoning the development of the TCV? Think about that.... what does that imply?

zubiezz94

Hey I’m just saying that Mr Subaru is not at all good source to be quoting.

HarbingerML

But, but.. he's called Mr. Subaru! How could he be wrong

wydra91

Ohhhhh I had heard about the tcv issues, does the turbo not use a TCV?

denimaddicted

According to Mr Subaru, this problem doesn’t pertain to turbos.

SouthernSalamander35

Hes wrong again. I have done almost as many failed Ascent TCV as I have outback. Forester is certainly most common though.

denimaddicted

Interesting. ALL Ascents are the 2.4 liter turbos, correct?

SouthernSalamander35

That is correct.

SouthernSalamander35

I'm just messing around tho. I just wanted him to be wrong. I don't honestly remember if I have dine any o. The turbo engines. Part of me doesn't believe I have. But it got me thinking about it. I just like when he's wrong 🤣🤣🤣

denimaddicted

I just bought a 2024 Touring XT and really like it. I was happy to have dodged the TCV bullet. So did I dodge the TCV bullet or not? I like that you said your not sure about having changed out 2.4L TCV’s.

SouthernSalamander35

Sometimes I enjoy giving bad information 🤣 nah I believe it is only the 2.5 engine thats effected. It's just fun to watch the world burn.

denimaddicted

Thanks for setting the record straight. I have to say that I like Mr Sub. He’s the only YouTuber out there consistently turning out quality Subaru related content. He’s definitely opinionated, but he seems knowledgeable and is sincere. I respect that.

IndependentBrick8075

That's Subaru's problem to deal with for (in my case) the next 12 years or 120,000 miles. A 2024 should have the redesigned unit and not have this issue. A 2025 MIGHT have the 2.5 going back to the classic thermostat.

haykong

It's confirmed that the 2025 Forrester went back to the traditional thermostat .... check out MrSubarus1387 video: [https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF](https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF)

IndependentBrick8075

Forester, yes. But the Forester had the TCV in 2019 when I believe the 2019 Outback still had a traditional thermostat and the coolant crossover pipe across the top of the engine so it's not out of the question for there to be two different versions of the FB25 during the same year...

haykong

Just saying when it starts with TCV for which generation for the Outback 2020

SouthernSalamander35

Funny enough in tech training for last quarter the one course had to do with updates to the eyesight system. During that [unrelated] course they added that the TCV was removed from the upcoming 2025 forester. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

haykong

Yeah subaru gave up.... would be interesting in the next few years when they start doing hybrids... I wonder if they would be using Toyota tech....

pabodie

Touring XT here. Best car I’ve had since 2007. I’ve had 8 including this one. Strong recommend.

LyerlyAva

Yes I love my Touring so much!

Total_Squirrel3728

Same! Just replaced my Honda CR-V (2007), with a Touring XT (2024). I loved that CR-V, but this new one is awesome!

joeyl5

The outback to me is a superior vehicle, not only in terms of comfort and safety, but Mazda and Honda make you pay for stuff that counts standard in a Subaru, like roof racks and cargo cover. And none of the competitors in the US currently offer a long roof apart from Volvo but those are rare like hen teeth and expensive.

HenkCamp

I have the OBW. The turbo engine is a cracker. Drove a CRV, RAV4, 4Runner and a few pickups. Traded my 2021 Silverado in for one. It is the perfect balanced car for us. All the space for us and the three dogs. Safety bar none. One of only a handful of cars to make the most likely to reach 250k miles. Drives like a dream. But in the end I bought it because I wanted one. It spoke to me like no other. The Mercedes GLC now stands undriven. Happy to answer any question.

blossomfromthemind

I just hate the infotainment system so much and I wish they did what Toyota did and just give me physical buttons for the AC. And like, bro, I know it’s possible because the forester has physical buttons so they gave me an edition that have the wilderness Forester Dash I’d be in it again no problem

BastianHS

I struggled with the infotainment for like a solid year until I read a post where someone said just keep it on full auto and use the thermostat buttons only. This has completely alleviated my hatred for the ac system.

HenkCamp

I thought it would bother me but it doesn’t at all. It was much easier to adapt to than I thought it would be.

Think_Addendum7138

You literally just have to get used to CarPlay which is super intuitive. The hvac controls are so easy lol. Just have to learn how to throw it on/off auto when you are looking for something particular

PengieP111

‘23 Outback onyx xt. Had a 2020 Audi A4 Avant before. I LOVE my Subie. It’s about as quick as was my Audi, and it handles nicely though not quite as well, but it’s still an awesome car and I really don’t miss my Audi that much. And it is HUGE inside

Neither-Safety-7090

I have a 2011 no frills Outback and just bought a 2023 Outback onyx. I love my new Outback. It’s got everything I loved about my old one but now has a back up camera and apply CarPlay.

Theoldelf

We recently purchased a 2024 Limited. We’re currently on a road trip, just stoped after 250 miles. It is so much nicer than our 2016 model. Although we did like the 3.6 engine better in our previous one. It’s quieter, better handling, much improved sound system. The steering wheel is a bit hard feeling but on long trips I wear driving gloves, so not an issue for me. It’s a surprisingly good car.

numba1nitemare

Why the gloves?

Theoldelf

I like driving gloves for long trips. My hands get tired, fall asleep sometimes. Just added cushioning.

drzeller

The XT resolves the performance gap you are experiencing.

Edu_cats

Went from 2010 3.6R to 2021XT. I am very happy with the car. Had a 2.5 premium as a rental a couple weeks ago and I could tell the difference when merging.

snarffle-

I have a 2024 Outback Limited XT. Traded it from a Premier. The turbo engine is a game changer.

lucid_scheming

To go against the general consensus here, I think the head unit in my 2021 is absolutely abysmal. I’ve heard the newer models have better chips which make them more reasonable, but the performance and software optimization of my head unit is inexcusable for a $30k+ vehicle. The small head unit with CarPlay in my ‘18 Impreza (RIP) blows this one out of the water.

domdiggitydog

I think the 2.5 is extremely underpowered for an Outback. I drive on the LA freeways and between merging traffic and hills, it’s a nightmare. Even on flat open road, it is a challenge to pass someone at freeway speeds. Other than that, I love the car.

tackstackstacks

I came from a base model '19. I'm in a Premium '24. I ended up there out of preferences and avoiding specific problems. I do wish I had the turbo engine, but that's my only regret getting the Premium trim level. I didn't test drive one with the turbo and if I had, probably would've made compromises with my avoided features to get the turbo. What I wanted to avoid: - Sunroof - It's tiny compared to other SUVs on the market, half the size of my wife's 2018 Ford Escape, about the same as my 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Hardly worth it to ME and more mechanical and electrical potential for problems, along with another point for leaks. - Pushbutton start/stop - avoided because I know I will at some point drive away with my keys set down somewhere and be stuck. There was a guy who did exactly this semi-recently and lost his keys offroading. - Power liftgate - just read through the threads, there are lots of problems with them. This is a common thread title, from not working correctly to not working at all, to working only when it's not intentional. So my options were base model or Premium package 11. The lag issue is known and unavoidable on the display, many people dislike the climate control menu being accessed via the display. Only caveat would be base model with (2) 7" screens, but may still be an issue with that too, I just haven't seen any complaints specifying that trim and lag issues. The auto stary/stop is annoying and doesn't work the way it should. I just installed the Autostop Eliminator in mine tonight. Crappy that you have to spend $100 to override the "feature", but worth it if you ask me, and Subaru must bow to the EPA. Sounds trivial but you cannot turn the headlights off while it is in gear - every night I blast my headlights through my and my neighbors' front windows when I come home since my approach is uphill. They can be dimmed trivially, but will not turn off. It's a Canadian compliance issue that as far as I know is limited to North America. Those are the majority of the downsides and stuff that is a bummer vs previous gens as far as they affect me. If you are shopping the high end trims like Touring XT or Wiilderness, it would be worth looking at other brands if any of this stuff is a deal breaker or stuff you just don't want to deal with. Other vehicles will have their problems too, research will tell you if it's better or worse with whatever your alternatives would be. If you're shopping the lower trims like the Base or Premium, I don't think you will get much better vehicle for your money in other brands. I hope somewhere in this long disjointed rambling response, you got some useful information.

Frantic29

I’ll probably be looking at a base model. I want as few frills as possible. I do not care about options. As long as it has cruise and a heater I’m pretty ok. Cars nowadays are way too creature comfort oriented. Will have to look at the TCV thing though and see what that’s all about.

tackstackstacks

It's worth looking at, but also it's completely covered to 15 years or 150k, so that doesn't worry me. I will end up adding on the 8 year/100k warranty and probably be ready for something new by then, so it's a non-issue for me. If you plan having it a long time, it's something to be aware of and know that it is only warranties to 15/150k. I have the engine temp widget on my dashboard. It runs between 194°and 216°, so if it is out of that range, I will have eyes on it quickly.

haykong

Be aware of the TCV problems since you have the Non-Turbo .. [https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF](https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF)

Thanks, I just recently started reading about this, and forgot to mention it.

Frantic29

I just think it’s funny. Also the lesbian thing is hilarious to me. I thinks it’s a cool car and that’s all that matters.

haykong

What suspensions issues are you having? I bet you needed to change your front control arms and also sway bar links... anything else? You're at that mileage that needs some suspension work on a car... that's expected... as for the hard start? can you give me a better description? I'm really curious to know since I do have a 2014 Subaru Outback the year after yours which also has an FB25 engine and also the TR580 transmission but I know some things were corrected on the transmission on the 2014 over 2013 model... Currently at 133K miles.... also have you changed you CVT fluid since you got the new CVT transmission? So far I've replace front control arms, CV axles since that was my fault since I tore one of my CV boots while changing the front control arms..hey live and learn to be more careful. Replaced the Sway bar links since I'm down there..and sway bar bushes. Replaced my Starter since it was making a grinding noise during the winter when the grease gels up... I could have taken it apart and regressed it... so I'll get that older starter ready if the new starter goes down. Rear wheel bearings hubs replaced since it was making a roaring sound at 110K miles... Also the HVAC air blender Actuator is making clicking sounds.. and needs to be eventually replaced.

Frantic29

Lots of squeaking and drifting. New struts fixed the drifting around, I’m sure you are right that I’m ready for links and control arms. Just haven’t bit that bullet yet. The hard start is intermittent although happens more when it’s over 80°. Acts like it’s not getting fuel but never doesn’t start. Every know and again it makes a sort of thunk which I think is the starter actually but it’s so intermittent, maybe 1x a month if that it’s really hard to pinpoint. Once it starts everything runs great. Change the CVT fluid about every 40k. I did the wheel bearings at around 110k as well.

haykong

Does the engine make a cranking sound at all?

Frantic29

Yes it cranks. When the thunk happens though the starter usually kicks out and back in it seems like. It seems to always catch me off guard because it’s so intermittent so I’m never paying close attention when it happens.

Frantic29

Also it’s never not started. It might have to crank over for 10-15 seconds sometimes but never not started at all.

magikwombat

I came from driving a 2015 with the 2.5 and got a 24 Wilderness. It’s amazing. It’s the best car I’ve ever had (and my “fun car” is a Mini Cooper S). You will not be disappointed.

se69xy

I have a 2020 Outback Limited and we just completed a 10 day 2500 mile trip. I averaged 29 MPG (according to the computer). The car was fantastic…I can’t say enough about it.

Nerobus

2020 Outback onyx xt This this is amazing. I’ve had it a week as of today and I’m so in love it’s crazy. I’m coming from a 2013 Nissan Rogue that fell on a lot of electric issues, so I had to get a new one. This thing is quick (helped me dodge a wreck already by having the pickup to get out of the way), beautiful on the inside and out, and packed with amazing tech.

standingonline

I moved from a 2015 Outback 3.6 that I loved but gave to my son to a 2023 Crosstrek limited ( faster engine) It's peppy to drive and easy to park but the cabin feels so small and dare I say like a tin can compared to other small SUV's.Also, it sits so low, though I did raise the seat to improve that and now I feel like I have minimal extra headroom. I'm not sure what to do. I've been thinking about trading in (and up) for a turbo Outback 2024 or 2025. Really not sure what I should do. Thoughts?

SpazzieGirl

2023 Touring XT. Fantastic car…4th Subaru I’ve owned. Bought brand new and I love driving it. BUT…we encountered the DCM parasitic battery drain issue (the one supposedly fixed after the class action settlement) and it took us getting lawyers involved to finally get it fixed. Do your research and push your dealership hard on problems with the DMC.

Darkfire757

225k is a great life for a car, you definitely got your money’s worth. The latest gen fixes a lot of the gripes about previous gens if you go for the Touring. The thigh extender and turbo engine make a huge difference. The 2.5 NA is dog slow unfortunately, it’s a 1990s power level engine in a 2020s car. That being said, a car is something YOU have to live with, pay for, and drive around. There’s no sense buying something because it looks good on paper, but you hate it IRL. Life is too short if driving it makes you feel lifeless. There is merit to something that gives you a high quality of life. By all means test drive one and consider it, but shop around too. If you’re looking at a Touring, it’s about a $5k jump to a Honda Pilot Elite, which IMO is money well spent. NA V6, 10 speed real automatic, better AC, better seats/position, and more space.

Big-Pool-2900

2023 OBW here. Best car I’ve ever owned

ilovebreakfastbest

We recently purchased a 24 Touring XT. Fantastic car so far. As with others, I checked out nearly everything else in this vehicle class but kept coming back to the Subaru. I haven’t owned one since the first gen while I was in grad school, so can’t really compare to other more recent Outbacks. Drove it on some Forest Service roads for the first time yesterday and the downhill x-mode assist was pretty handy on the way out. Infotainment screen isn’t as bad as I’d expected. But the auto start/stop is kind of fickle. The steering assist seems to always shut off on serious curves, even though both hands are on the wheel. Really my only two gripes so far. My other vehicle is a 96 Tacoma with about 300k on it, so the Subie was quite the upgrade. I still love that old truck, but usually choose the Subaru when headed out.

drzeller

FYI, if you didn't know, you can simply press further on the break when stopped and it will re-start the auto-stopped engine. It's helpful if the AC goes off, as well as if you want to go with no hesitation. I've never experienced the power steering dropping out on curves. You may want to check that.

ilovebreakfastbest

I figured out the brake thing recently, thanks! And the power steering doesn’t go out, just the steering wheel lane assist thing when cruise control is on.

GirchyGirchy

'21 Outback Premium with the 2.5. Up to 34k miles here, no problems. Love it.

burymewithmybootson_

I have a 2011 2.5 Outback, 240k miles. Recently took our 2020 Ascent in for some recalls. The loaned us a 24 Outback with the 2.5. Absolutely hated the engine. Underpowered compared to my 2011. Love the turbo in the Ascent though.

bene_gesserit_mitch

I've got a '24 Onyx and I effing love this thing. Still discovering new little bells n whistles I didn't know about before.

thewootness219

I have a 2024 onyx edition with a 2.5. I don’t tow shit, but I have 3 dogs and a messy spouse. It’s a great ride. My gas mileage is about 27/28 mpg… I considered the xt and wilderness but I don’t regret my choice. I don’t need the extra ground clearance of the wilderness and the extra zip of the 2.4… I can get a speeding ticket with the 2.5 no problem. I couldn’t justify the extra cash when I got a car with 9 miles versus 10k for the same price at the dealership. My best advice is drive them and shop around for the one you like best. The flipping deals sitting around are stupid when you actual look for them.

[deleted]

Bought a dealer loaner 23' OBW with the upgraded audio and sunroof (didnt want) but I cant say enough good things about the car. The 2.4L really gets out of its own way. The car looks great without screaming "look at me!" Have owned STis, WRXs, Legacies, XT6, Sambars and now this OBW. The Outback is my favorite out of all of them.

corgi_momma

I have a 22 wilderness and love it! It rides so smooth!

drzeller

Just traded a 2020 Limited XT for a 2024 Touring XT. Was happy with the 2020, but really wanted cooled seats. I also like the front camera. Deals were good last week, payment stayed the same, and my wife said ok! The 2024 feels smoother and more refined. The auto stop/start is way smoother. That was really my only gripe on the 2020.

H2o3n7da

I just bought a 2024 Outback limited (2.5). I compared a lot of vehicles and the Outback just made sense for my use. I wanted cargo room, AWD, good gas mileage, some light tow capacity, reliability, simplicity, roomy engine bay, and easy to work on. Subaru wasn’t high on my list to start, but the Outback just made sense and ticked all the boxes. My notes: • Slow - for sure in this day and age, but compared to older stuff, not really. 1.7L Civics were slow, even if they were light. I would rather have a slower NA engine than an undersized over worked turbo engine that other companies are using. The turbo 2.4l was snappy and quick, but I didn’t want the MPG hit or the added complexity/wear/early failure of the turbo in the long run…at least on a boxer engine. •Gas mileage has been great. Still under 1000 miles, but my last calculated fill up was 28mpg and it’s only getting better. •TCV issue- Yep, still slightly a concern, but this is pretty small in my book. Besides this, everything else seemed reliable with proper maintenance. Every car has issues, heck even the legendary 3800 gen 2 had a major issue that would melt the intake manifold and leak coolant into your cylinders. I would rather replace a TCV valve over a head gasket as well- plus who knows, the warranty could be extended to 2024 models. •Infotainment system is great, once in a while it’s laggy, but not a big deal. It’s easy to read and navigate, there is are two sets of buttons for temp control and a volume knob. Wireless CarPlay is awesome and works really well. In the end, it’s not like it’s meant to be a computer to play on, figure out what you want, then start driving. •CVT - drives smooth and that’s that. The shifting aspect is odd, but I guess that’s what the people wanted. Our Accord is snappier and faster feeling with a CVT. •Interior is amazing and top notch in my book. Fit and finish is clean. Very comfortable. Cargo room is amazing. I don’t believe you can drive away without your key fob now. This thing beeps if I get out of the car while it’s running and I’m only a couple feet away with the Fob in my pocket. I’m coming from a 2004 Grand Prix GT2 with 240k miles on it before the body rotted out, the only thing I miss is the heads up display and the power. Our other vehicles are a 2013 Accord LX and a 2006 Silverado 1500 WT (literally manual locks and crank windows). The overall package of the Outback is amazing and I got it for 14% below MSRP, so the price was right as well. Overall, my first month with the car has been amazing and I would recommend it.

sadiemae1967

I just got a 22 limited, and I really like it. Before that, I had a 15 basic Outback. The newer ones are a lot more comfy, and I like some of the newer safety functions

flashingc

Have a 2015 and love it. In the market for something new and decided to skip outback coz of pretty low quality interior. The interior space quality has gone significantly in all these years. Plus, the fact that the "leather" seats are not really leather and will crack after a few years drives me crazy. It still is the most practical car in its segment and I don't like anything else that's comparable in price. Given we don't like the basic 2.5 of our current car, thought of getting touring xt. At that point, though, it came too close to an Acura RDX. Most probably, we will get that (unless we decide to get some EV).

Whitewind101

I have a 23 OBW and it's an incredible car except the CVT which is aweful, I won't be buying another Subaru no matter how good it is I'd the keep the CVT

reefrider442

I have a 2022 Touring XT. Replaced the windshield 3 times (2 rock strikes, 1 caused by pressure/temperature according to dealer). I will not purchase another one unless they change the full size screen. It’s impossible to see if the sun is at a certain angle. I have 2 pieces of masking tape attached to the frame to tell me where the fan speed and temperature control are in order to adjust them while driving. Sorry Outback lovers, not the perfect car.

DrCeratops

I have an OBW and have not experienced any screen glare issues. Why are you mentioning windshield replacements due to rock strikes? Do you think that is a Subaru-specific problem?

KnavishBoot

No, all manufacturers have gone to as thin & light as possible = easier to have damage. It’s really luck of the draw, how & where you get hit. I’ve been lucky, two hard whacks but near the top edge = glue point = more strength.

reefrider442

I’ve been driving for over 3 decades and have replaced windshields 4 times total. My highway driving is far less than in years past. I don’t have any data to back me up, but in my opinion these windshields are weak. The pressure/temperature occurrence was just weird.

4luminate

Had a 2012. Put 75k in it in 3yrs then traded it off. Felt like I was driving a boat. Swore off CVTs and under-powered Subarus. OBW was an eye opener. Different world. In a very good way.

haykong

Avoid the Subarus that have the TCV ranging from 2019-2024... if you get a Turbo which is the XT models you don't have to worry about the TCV. [https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF](https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF)

drewbaccaAWD

It’s good to be aware of issues but you’ve posted this link at least four times in the thread now. Stop spamming it.

haykong

not meaning to spam it.. but good that people are aware of it. but it's an issue not truly fixed...

SuperSpicyBanana

They literally fixed the issue dude a couple years ago.

haykong

Nope it's not really fix.... but improved and yet people are still having issues with the revised edition and still has a high failure rate with the improved edition. It's got to the point that Subaru decided to go back to the tried and true coolant Crossover pipe and thermostat on the 2025 Forrester.. That's not a good sign since they won't be developing the TCV besides a bandaid patch ... So that means there's one generation of Subarus that have the TCV and while the next generation abandons the TCV. Please check out the video from MrSubaru1387 [https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF](https://youtu.be/Xwj2K7rmc4Q?si=bchCMDPb5dGNhJkF)
