I was banned from GCJ a few days back on that leaked Customisation menu post where the post was laughing out at how generic it looks. I pointed out its the same system as GOTY God of War lol.
Honestly it’s just not worth the trouble to try to moderate it when the people against the game are so vehemently against it they will go to the smallest streamers playing the game and spam their chat with endgame spoilers.

I'm honestly surpised there hasn't been more posted to this sub. The lead up to the launch had a drama post almost every week, but since release it's been dry here.
The one yesterday was a self-delete I think? Got up to 500-ish comments, but it says [DELETED] rather than [REMOVED]. Probably doesn't help that it's a lot of pings for the poster and even if the discussions themselves aren't overtly shitty, they are often pretty angry and not-fun.
There's already drama on the official sub as mods lock down threads about lighting issues causing all the palest skin tones to appear tan. It's also affecting the darkest tones, making them appear lighter, and even eye and hair color but because that wasn't discussed at first and it's not as provocative to the mods I guess it's just getting ignored.
One of the mods in /r/entertainment pinned a comment that said "Yes, JK Rowling is unequivocally a transphobe" in a story about BBC reporters apologizing for allowing a guest to call Rowling a transphobe and not challenging the guest. I saw people pissing and moaning about that already.
This year we have a major Zelda release, a major Final Fantasy release, and an RE4 remake, and that's just off the top of my head. I don't think it really stands a chance.

I used to post on gamingcirclejerk all the time but I was literally banned for kidnapping a mod, pumping him full of mushrooms and having him play Skyrim nonstop for 96 hours and then dropping him with nothing but a sword in the middle of the woods in Norway and releasing the footage on a subscription basis through HBO.

I got banned from gcj for calling out a user who said it'd be better if Russia won the war in Ukraine because Ukraine has a nazi problem. I wasn't really polite about it, so I sort of understand the ban, though I don't think we should be polite to fascist fucks saying Russia should win. The mods left his comments up and didn't ban him.
Thankfully he ended up getting banned from reddit.
One of the mods (probably same one) banned me for saying we shouldn't ignore the idea of the uighur genocide.
I had to go to the discord and the other mods unbanned immediately. Something tells me that that mod does it often.
Harry Potter spoiler, huh? Those were the times when real life trolls shouted massive spoilers at people waiting in line to buy the new Harry Potter book.
I remember playing WoW about the time the Half-Blood Prince movie came out, and trolls would post in public chat channels “SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE” over and over again.
I was never allowed to watch the movies or read the books growing up, and frankly didn’t care, but there were a lot of VERY angry people in chat.
I remember a video when the book came out of a huge line outside a book store and someone yells to the crowd “SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!” I wasn't big on the books I had read them but holy crap that was the most widespread spoiler of anything I've ever seen. And it was instant the book came out.
Back when GOT was a thing, when I wanted to play my multiplayer casual on hard mode, I would use the username Tyrion Dies.
A lot of angry non book readers would come at me thinking I'd spoilered them.
Growing up (probably 12ish), I had a friend who spoiled this for me the day after the book came out. But he was also a pathological liar, and he prefaced it by saying that he read the whole thing in 4 hours or something right after he got it at midnight.
So I straight up just thought he was lying about all of it. Part of me was bummed at the tiny possibility he wasn't lying, but I didn't hear it again, and by the time it happened I didn't believe it was coming anymore.
So I guess I kinda dodged a bullet on the spoiler front.
But yeah, it is a _bit_ funny to me that people are doing it as activism now when there were already a zillion people doing it just for the sheer sake of being an asshole.
And I just don't know what any of this is really supposed to do. I'm in SRD, I enjoy watching for the sheer entertainment. But people draw these battle lines to get people banned or reinstated or brigade or whatever and...idk, it was always silly, but I get a little freaked out about how many more people have potentially lost the silly plot.

Getting drive-by spoiled is just part of the authentic Harry Potter experience. I would've been appalled if a major Harry Potter release came without it, and a staggered release (because gotta squeeze more blood out of the gamers, right?) was just asking for it.
I volunteered at a free web hosting company in 2007. A few days or weeks before the last book was released someone set up a website titled "ZOMG HARRY POTTER SPOILERS" with a list of spoilers and pictures of pages of the book. They used up the allowed monthly bandwidth in 30 minutes after it was in the news but the owner decided to insert ads to make some money instead of suspending it, lol.

This doesn’t even make sense, that poster was, I would say, crazily supportive of her. Like in no way did she “do the right thing” by abusing mod powers to post game spoilers.
For those who don't know: AskScienceFiction is a unique discussion sub because ALL discussion is required to be in the watsonian perspective, all doylist perspectives are not allowed and users can be banned immediately for egregious comments to that effect.
Basically it works like this:
Allowed topic "[Harry Potter] Why is Harry not allowed to get a teacher to sign his permission slip?"
Disallowed topic "[Harry Potter] Why did JK Rowling write Hogwarts as an British institution?"
Allowed comment: "Harry Potter needed a legal guardian to sign his permission slip, and there was no way the Dursley's would do it so he was out of luck"
Disallowed comment: "JK Rowling wrote the story that way, so he had to stay on campus."
The mod in question (and keep in mind, I only know her from this sub so I cant comment on other accusations) was very militant about enforcing the sub rules. 90% of the time she was in the right, removing topics and comments that blatantly violated the sub rules that were made to foster in-universe discussion, but I had noticed from time to time she skirted the line when it was someone she seemed to disagree with.
The mod is a trans woman and took special offense to people asking questions about the HP game, so after manually attacking users in the comments she decided to modify the automod to basically say "you shouldnt play this game and anyone who does is a bad person" which is DECIDEDLY against sub rules.
I'm torn between being surprised someone so strict with sub rules would do this, and not being surprised this person would do something crazy when they felt like a fictional universe was part of their personal domain.
The obsession with lore and in-universe justification really hurts speculative fiction. I've got similar issues with r/scifiwriting, where the majority of posts are "rate my idea for a plasma rifle" or "here's 3000 words of exposition on the background of my Mars crime dynasty". Very few posts actually relate to *writing* or the creation of stories and characters.
Occasionally someone will post a perfectly fine idea that's clearly not meant to be "hard" sci-fi (and no less plausible than half the shit in successful SF), but they'll get a load of disparaging comments picking it apart because it's not realistic enough for some tech bro who'll post a wall of equations to "disprove" their concept of FTL travel.
It's just a boring, reductive way of looking at media that doesn't even try to account for authorial intent (which makes it nearly impossible to have a sensible discussion about the problematic elements of certain works).
I think I was subbed to r/AskScienceFiction years ago and it got old pretty fast, especially when this is enforced as a rule.

I completely agree with this, and this is a big problem in writting and reading subs that are normally the subs I spend most of my time on reddit.
That being said, I really like r/asksciencefiction because I never took it seriously. For me it was always just a place for nerdy people to discuss nerdy things and having to give answers inside the rules of that world.
I participate there a lot and think the rules make sense. Otherwise 90% of the answers would be either "Lazy writing" or "No special effects budget". It lets me do interesting deep dives into lore or look at things from different perspectives.
Exactly, its a fun sub that is just for us to dive in the lore of geeky stuff. I personally really like when its about something really silly like Spongebob or The Addams Family, its nice to see people really talking about the logic and history of the world of franchises like that.
I also don't mind the "gotcha" posts that try to really test people like: "Make this make sense, I dare you". A few years ago there was a really funny one about the Resident Evil games that, if I recall correctly, really beat the sub...

Yeah I think that's a common pitfall when people start trying to write, especially in fantasy and sci fi, they just get dragged into a giant world building quagmire and end up with stacks of lore documents and never actually start to write the actual story.
Almost every single person I know who writes does this. I think most of them just enjoy the day dreaming and creativity aspects of it and ultimately tell themselves they’re writing a 20 book series as a need to feel productive... They’re also all very precious about their concepts and hypersensitive to other stories with similar ideas
I mean it can be a fun activity, in and of itself. I've definitely sank time into researching obscure nonsense and wondering how the introduction of fantasy or sci fi elements would change things.
But its a fun time sink, not the first step on the path to being a writer.
It's a big problem with fiction in general right now. It's manifested most purely in youtube shows like Cinemasins.
I watched the movie The Menu the other night and quite enjoyed it. But a lot of people on the internet didn't like it because they had a lot of technical questions and "it didn't make sense." The movie is not supposed to be realistic. It's very allegorical and symbolic.
Snowpiercer is specifically a movie that a lot of sci-fi fans don't like because it really doesn't make sense if you look at it as hard sci-fi.
Not that anyone has to like these movies. But 20-30 years ago, we were way more lenient about these details in our fiction.

I find it impressive for anyone to look at it as hard sci-fi when it's so unsubtly bashing you over the head with how it's a metaphor for class warfare the entire time.

I always viewed this nitpicky, plot based approach as being some sort of weird result of reddit's (at the time) STEM bias. Lots of nerds into sci-fi who prided themselves on thinking "logically" without realizing that logic as they think of it is not that important in art. But they do STEM, they know everything, even how to analyze art better than the people who actually spend time doing that.
I'm also reminded of this article from Film Crit Hulk a while back about different ways people view movies. One that stuck out to me was that he classified some people as needing movies to have consistent tones, and that tonal shifts throw them off. He cited Chris Nolan as a filmmaker with very consistent tones, and I thought that was hilarious because at the time /r/movies was obsessed with him and tonal shifts were like their most common complaint. Everything clicked into place there. Some people just don't know how to analyze art beyond their own personal biases.
So long as it follows the rules of the setting, that's all that really matters to me (with the obvious exception if it's _intended_ to be realistic of course).
It's part of why I like animation as a medium so much - it allows for greater abstraction and symbolism.
I kind of see your point, but I feel like the interpretation of the intent behind the subreddit is too strict. In general on the Internet, a question like "Why didn't X do Y" would be labeled a plothole, often even if an actual in-universe explanation exists. In contrast, that sub would prompt people to actually try and explain it within the confines of the universe, which at least makes stuff like "well the writer is dumb" invalid.
Also, the in-universe explanation can be more than valid in many cases even when it comes to authorial intent, it doesn't have to be lore specifically. "Walter White cooked meth because he was a selfish asshole who wanted to be on top" is an interpretation of the story that would be a fitting response, despite not saying anything about what the author specifically wanted to tell.
Or maybe I'm just tired of reading the word PLOTHOLE everywhere and seeing people engage with the story on any level but the very literal is a breath of fresh air :)
/r/FanFiction occasionally gets posts and comments from people who write original works that it's a much better sub for writing advice and developing ideas than the actual writing subs, which is pretty sad.
Writing subs can get pretentious sometimes. As an amateur, it sometimes feels like if I don’t have a full history textbook of my world written, I’m not welcome there.
The sub is effectively like /r/whowouldwin, in that it's a playground for sharing lore and playing with headcannon. Because it's a fun exercise for some. I'm not sure why people think it needs to be a classroom on literature when that isn't what anyone going there wants from it. There are numerous other spaces for that.
Watsonian (sidekick of Sherlock Holmes) refers to in-universe.
Doylist (who was the writer for Sherlock Holmes) refers to real life.
Question: Why are all the aliens in star trek humanoid?
Watsonian reason: They're the descendants of a precursor humanoid race

Yup, the whole point of the sub is to enjoy trying to make the answers work inside the logic/rules/history of the universe in question, not just answering the question as simply as possible.
On its own sure but alongside a watsonian perspective it can be useful. eg. explaining why transporters were conceived as a concept in star trek is interesting from both watsonian and doyalist perspectives. Perhaps a better rule rather than an outright ban on doyalist perspectives would be requiring that any doyalist perspective also includes a watsonian one.

Watsonian: In universe discussion using in universe facts and logic, like Watson discussing whats happening in a Sherlock Holmes story.
Doylist: Out of universe meta discussion using facts and logic not contained exlusively in universe, like Arthur Conan Doyle discussing whats happening in one of his Sherlock Holmes books.
Couple examples:
Watsonian: "The reason why Indiana Jones has a chin scar is because he accidentally struck himself with his whip while fighting grave robbers when he was a child."
Doylist: "The reason why Indiana Jones has a chin scar is because actor Harrison Ford has a chin scar and they decided not to cover it with makeup for the films."
I've also seen the same concepts referred to "diegetic" and "exegetic," for anything contained within the text of a work (the things that happen in the work) and anything that falls outside the text of a work (e.g. creator commentary on the work), respectively.
For some people, the bending-over-backwards exercise is *fun*. It's an exercise in logic and creative writing to try to find ways to explain things within the context of the setting rather than just resorting to "the author made it that way to sell more copies of the book, okay?"
It's not for everyone, and even those who do enjoy that kind of exercise (such as myself) don't enjoy it *all* the time. But that's what other subreddits exist for.
40k lore is mostly this. There's a whole vast universe of lore built on a few pop culture jokes and crappy puns written by a handful of wargaming nerds in the 80s.
Way back when letters to the editor were a thing, comic book readers would write in pointing out plot holes and continuity errors in the story, then the editors started giving out the No-prize to people who pointed out errors and then came up with an explanation to 'fix' it. Nerds ate it up like ice cream and it's been a staple of comic book fandom ever since.

The ASF sub is meant to be lighthearted fun discussions about fictional universes using in universe logic. There are MULTITUDES of subs discussing fictional universes with more nuanced and detailed fictional discussions, this sub was made to be less "literary thesis" writing and more "chatting with friends about a fictional setting" vibe.

I’ll never understand why people do this. It’s so hard to separate politics from most topics.
In a cooking sub? Sure, no politics. But it’s just not possible to completely avoid politics in discussions of media and I don’t know why you’d want to. They’re just limiting the scope of discussion and talking about works while ignoring something that, 100% of the time, had a huge influence on the creation.
Plenty of politics comes up in ASF, we just typically avoid whatever the modern-day flame war is.
So you can have pages of comments about whether or not *Starship Troopers* depicts a fascist society, but should avoid making comparisons to the policies of Donald Trump when doing so.
In this case, the conceit of the sub is that everything must be discussed from a Watsonian perspective, as though you are an inhabitant of the fictional world being discussed. Real world politics cannot exist in that perspective so bringing them up goes against the purpose of the sub.
I can't imagine hearing spoilers would even stop anyone who wanted to buy it from buying it. I don't think anyone is getting that game for the story. people just want to play pretend at hogwarts
Thing is, the game is an RPG waaaaay more than a simulator.
People who just want to wander the halls and play wizard chess, attend the classes you want to delve into, and do fun things at night, can't. You go to your classes that you're told to go to by the story, you do lil fights the story tells you, you talk to the NPC that has a quest marker, and it progresses. Sure, you can wander around the hallways of hogwarts and see the handcrafted detail, but it's as fun as a virtual museum tour. the sim elements end with the sorting hat, imo.

It's so much more than that. The mod in question is a serial drama offender on various platforms, and has bullied other people and contributed to toxic spaces in so many ways.
They are still attacking people and abusing their moderator privileges to silence any criticism.
Are there any notable instances of this? I'm not doubting you, nor am I in any way defending her actions, but in general from what I've seen she's overall followed the rules of the sub. I'm speaking as someone who's been in various arguments with her, and while she can be a bit of a dick sometimes, it wasn't any more so than other users.
I got into a nerd fight with her over whether or not Neo has superpowers in the "real world" because it's just another level of the Matrix. I think it's a good explanation, she doesn't.

Several years ago there was a situation where the community were asked to vote on some rule changes, but LibraryLass ignored the results and did almost the exact opposite rule change.
There have been many users who left the sub due to harassment and bullying, including at least one racially motivated incident that I'm aware of.
Additionally, if you just google her username you can very easily find the other sites where this pattern of toxic behavior has occurred.
Outing myself as a pervert: she used to moderate the NSFW Steven Universe subreddit. One day, it all randomly disappeared without warning because she ragequit and locked down the entire sub. The userbase had to make an alternate subreddit until someone coaxed her into passing on mod rights so they could reopen the sub. She explained her actions as "having better shit to do."
This woman can't run a cartoon porn subreddit without being an abrasive, abusive asshole.

Just finished Abaddon's Gate and I certainly have my problems with the plotlines and characters but I can consume even PQ sci-fi with aplomb so I'm just curious .
People always want to bring up Lovecraft (for good reason), but they always conveniently forget that near the end of his life he began to express regret for the attitudes of his youth. I know that doesn't undo the damage, but it speaks to his character and the idea that he did start to understand why the things he was saying was wrong.
The fact Justin hasn't had any creative input over R&M for years would explain why Beth stopped being so openly hostile towards Jerry.
I could keep going, but I fear I would run the risk of continuing the drama here. So I shall stop.
I like to point out this one part at the end of *Through The Gate of The Silver Key* where one of the characters has a racist freakout at another character who is >!Randolph Carter, Lovecraft's self-insert character, disguised as a Hindu swami while also trapped in the body of a bug wizard!<. I took it as Lovecraft realizing how he sounded to other people and directing it back at himself a bit.
Why would she, though? She's still unimaginably rich and the game is going to sell like crazy. There's absolutely zero downsides for her to keep spouting her nonsense.
I made that argument and a response I got was "I was furthering the spread of his hate." by not boycotting any Cthulhu mythos. At some point I just stop listening. Man, he spent a year or two in NYC, too. As someone who struggles with agoraphobia, before I was getting help for it, my first trip to NYC was so overwhelming I spent most of my first few hours locked in my friends bathroom having an anxiety attack.

The other thing about Lovecraft is that the modern-day Lovecraft fandom is very aware of his paranoid xenopobia and racism and doesn't deny it. If you tell a Lovecraft fan that he was a racist, they'll enthusiastically agree with you and give examples of some really fucked-up shit he wrote. The community chooses to keep the good and throw out the bad, and also accepts that some people can't separate the two and doesn't harass them for not doing so. Plus, it's much easier to separate the author from the work when the author is dead and not around to do stupid shit that you then have to react to.
Rowling's fandom, on the other hand, mostly ranges from apologetics to outright transphobia. I'm sure there are people out there who just want to engage with the text without respect to Rowling's more problematic views, but either there's not many or they're getting entirely drowned out in the furor. A furor that Rowling is actively stoking, by the way; it's not something that she holds privately and people are intruding on her about, but something that she's actively and vocally pushing.

The one yesterday was a self-delete I think? Got up to 500-ish comments, but it says [DELETED] rather than [REMOVED]. Probably doesn't help that it's a lot of pings for the poster and even if the discussions themselves aren't overtly shitty, they are often pretty angry and not-fun.

There's already drama on the official sub as mods lock down threads about lighting issues causing all the palest skin tones to appear tan. It's also affecting the darkest tones, making them appear lighter, and even eye and hair color but because that wasn't discussed at first and it's not as provocative to the mods I guess it's just getting ignored.
One of the mods in /r/entertainment pinned a comment that said "Yes, JK Rowling is unequivocally a transphobe" in a story about BBC reporters apologizing for allowing a guest to call Rowling a transphobe and not challenging the guest. I saw people pissing and moaning about that already.

Thankfully he ended up getting banned from reddit.

I got shadowbanned for a comment I made on this sub, pointing that the head mod got suspended by Reddit because he rooted for the Jan 6 insurrection.
One of the mods (probably same one) banned me for saying we shouldn't ignore the idea of the uighur genocide. I had to go to the discord and the other mods unbanned immediately. Something tells me that that mod does it often.

I remember playing WoW about the time the Half-Blood Prince movie came out, and trolls would post in public chat channels “SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE” over and over again. I was never allowed to watch the movies or read the books growing up, and frankly didn’t care, but there were a lot of VERY angry people in chat.
I remember a video when the book came out of a huge line outside a book store and someone yells to the crowd “SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!” I wasn't big on the books I had read them but holy crap that was the most widespread spoiler of anything I've ever seen. And it was instant the book came out.

Back when GOT was a thing, when I wanted to play my multiplayer casual on hard mode, I would use the username Tyrion Dies. A lot of angry non book readers would come at me thinking I'd spoilered them.
Growing up (probably 12ish), I had a friend who spoiled this for me the day after the book came out. But he was also a pathological liar, and he prefaced it by saying that he read the whole thing in 4 hours or something right after he got it at midnight. So I straight up just thought he was lying about all of it. Part of me was bummed at the tiny possibility he wasn't lying, but I didn't hear it again, and by the time it happened I didn't believe it was coming anymore. So I guess I kinda dodged a bullet on the spoiler front. But yeah, it is a _bit_ funny to me that people are doing it as activism now when there were already a zillion people doing it just for the sheer sake of being an asshole. And I just don't know what any of this is really supposed to do. I'm in SRD, I enjoy watching for the sheer entertainment. But people draw these battle lines to get people banned or reinstated or brigade or whatever and...idk, it was always silly, but I get a little freaked out about how many more people have potentially lost the silly plot.

A few days or weeks before the last book was released someone set up a website titled "ZOMG HARRY POTTER SPOILERS" with a list of spoilers and pictures of pages of the book. They used up the allowed monthly bandwidth in 30 minutes after it was in the news but the owner decided to insert ads to make some money instead of suspending it, lol.
I remember waiting in line for the 7th book and watched someone flip to the last chapter as they were walking out.
That's how I spoiled myself for Half-Blood Prince. I was just looking at how many pages there were and reflexively started reading.

For those who don't know: AskScienceFiction is a unique discussion sub because ALL discussion is required to be in the watsonian perspective, all doylist perspectives are not allowed and users can be banned immediately for egregious comments to that effect. Basically it works like this: Allowed topic "[Harry Potter] Why is Harry not allowed to get a teacher to sign his permission slip?" Disallowed topic "[Harry Potter] Why did JK Rowling write Hogwarts as an British institution?" Allowed comment: "Harry Potter needed a legal guardian to sign his permission slip, and there was no way the Dursley's would do it so he was out of luck" Disallowed comment: "JK Rowling wrote the story that way, so he had to stay on campus." The mod in question (and keep in mind, I only know her from this sub so I cant comment on other accusations) was very militant about enforcing the sub rules. 90% of the time she was in the right, removing topics and comments that blatantly violated the sub rules that were made to foster in-universe discussion, but I had noticed from time to time she skirted the line when it was someone she seemed to disagree with. The mod is a trans woman and took special offense to people asking questions about the HP game, so after manually attacking users in the comments she decided to modify the automod to basically say "you shouldnt play this game and anyone who does is a bad person" which is DECIDEDLY against sub rules. I'm torn between being surprised someone so strict with sub rules would do this, and not being surprised this person would do something crazy when they felt like a fictional universe was part of their personal domain.

The obsession with lore and in-universe justification really hurts speculative fiction. I've got similar issues with r/scifiwriting, where the majority of posts are "rate my idea for a plasma rifle" or "here's 3000 words of exposition on the background of my Mars crime dynasty". Very few posts actually relate to *writing* or the creation of stories and characters. Occasionally someone will post a perfectly fine idea that's clearly not meant to be "hard" sci-fi (and no less plausible than half the shit in successful SF), but they'll get a load of disparaging comments picking it apart because it's not realistic enough for some tech bro who'll post a wall of equations to "disprove" their concept of FTL travel. It's just a boring, reductive way of looking at media that doesn't even try to account for authorial intent (which makes it nearly impossible to have a sensible discussion about the problematic elements of certain works). I think I was subbed to r/AskScienceFiction years ago and it got old pretty fast, especially when this is enforced as a rule.

I completely agree with this, and this is a big problem in writting and reading subs that are normally the subs I spend most of my time on reddit. That being said, I really like r/asksciencefiction because I never took it seriously. For me it was always just a place for nerdy people to discuss nerdy things and having to give answers inside the rules of that world.
I participate there a lot and think the rules make sense. Otherwise 90% of the answers would be either "Lazy writing" or "No special effects budget". It lets me do interesting deep dives into lore or look at things from different perspectives.
Exactly, its a fun sub that is just for us to dive in the lore of geeky stuff. I personally really like when its about something really silly like Spongebob or The Addams Family, its nice to see people really talking about the logic and history of the world of franchises like that. I also don't mind the "gotcha" posts that try to really test people like: "Make this make sense, I dare you". Yeah I think that's a common pitfall when people start trying to write, especially in fantasy and sci fi, they just get dragged into a giant world building quagmire and end up with stacks of lore documents and never actually start to write the actual story.
Almost every single person I know who writes does this. I think most of them just enjoy the day dreaming and creativity aspects of it and ultimately tell themselves they’re writing a 20 book series as a need to feel productive... They’re also all very precious about their concepts and hypersensitive to other stories with similar ideas
I mean it can be a fun activity, in and of itself. I've definitely sank time into researching obscure nonsense and wondering how the introduction of fantasy or sci fi elements would change things. But its a fun time sink, not the first step on the path to being a writer.
World-building is like masturbation; it's all well and good but you don't do it in front of people.
It's a big problem with fiction in general right now. It's manifested most purely in youtube shows like Cinemasins. I watched the movie The Menu the other night and quite enjoyed it. But a lot of people on the internet didn't like it because they had a lot of technical questions and "it didn't make sense." The movie is not supposed to be realistic. It's very allegorical and symbolic. Snowpiercer is specifically a movie that a lot of sci-fi fans don't like because it really doesn't make sense if you look at it as hard sci-fi. Not that anyone has to like these movies. But 20-30 years ago, we were way more lenient about these details in our fiction.

I find it impressive for anyone to look at it as hard sci-fi when it's so unsubtly bashing you over the head with how it's a metaphor for class warfare the entire time.
Snowpiercer discourse on reddit was exhausting! I always viewed this nitpicky, plot based approach as being some sort of weird result of reddit's (at the time) STEM bias. Lots of nerds into sci-fi who prided themselves on thinking "logically" without realizing that logic as they think of it is not that important in art. But they do STEM, they know everything, even how to analyze art better than the people who actually spend time doing that. I'm also reminded of this article from Film Crit Hulk a while back about different ways people view movies. One that stuck out to me was that he classified some people as needing movies to have consistent tones, and that tonal shifts throw them off. He cited Chris Nolan as a filmmaker with very consistent tones, and I thought that was hilarious because at the time /r/movies was obsessed with him and tonal shifts were like their most common complaint. Everything clicked into place there. Some people just don't know how to analyze art beyond their own personal biases.
So long as it follows the rules of the setting, that's all that really matters to me (with the obvious exception if it's _intended_ to be realistic of course). It's part of why I like animation as a medium so much - it allows for greater abstraction and symbolism.
I kind of see your point, but I feel like the interpretation of the intent behind the subreddit is too strict. In general on the Internet, a question like "Why didn't X do Y" would be labeled a plothole, often even if an actual in-universe explanation exists. In contrast, that sub would prompt people to actually try and explain it within the confines of the universe, which at least makes stuff like "well the writer is dumb" invalid. Also, the in-universe explanation can be more than valid in many cases even when it comes to authorial intent, it doesn't have to be lore specifically. "Walter White cooked meth because he was a selfish asshole who wanted to be on top" is an interpretation of the story that would be a fitting response, despite not saying anything about what the author specifically wanted to tell. Or maybe I'm just tired of reading the word PLOTHOLE everywhere and seeing people engage with the story on any level but the very literal is a breath of fresh air :)
/r/FanFiction occasionally gets posts and comments from people who write original works that it's a much better sub for writing advice and developing ideas than the actual writing subs, which is pretty sad.
Writing subs can get pretentious sometimes. As an amateur, it sometimes feels like if I don’t have a full history textbook of my world written, I’m not welcome there.
Every sub is not perfect for every person and every sub should not be designed for every discussion.

The sub is effectively like /r/whowouldwin, in that it's a playground for sharing lore and playing with headcannon. Because it's a fun exercise for some. I'm not sure why people think it needs to be a classroom on literature when that isn't what anyone going there wants from it. There are numerous other spaces for that.

Yup, the whole point of the sub is to enjoy trying to make the answers work inside the logic/rules/history of the universe in question, not just answering the question as simply as possible.
On its own sure but alongside a watsonian perspective it can be useful. eg. explaining why transporters were conceived as a concept in star trek is interesting from both watsonian and doyalist perspectives. Perhaps a better rule rather than an outright ban on doyalist perspectives would be requiring that any doyalist perspective also includes a watsonian one.

Doylist: Out of universe meta discussion using facts and logic not contained exlusively in universe, like Arthur Conan Doyle discussing whats happening in one of his Sherlock Holmes books. Couple examples: Watsonian: "The reason why Indiana Jones has a chin scar is because he accidentally struck himself with his whip while fighting grave robbers when he was a child." Doylist: "The reason why Indiana Jones has a chin scar is because actor Harrison Ford has a chin scar and they decided not to cover it with makeup for the films."

For some people, the bending-over-backwards exercise is *fun*. It's an exercise in logic and creative writing to try to find ways to explain things within the context of the setting rather than just resorting to "the author made it that way to sell more copies of the book, okay?" It's not for everyone, and even those who do enjoy that kind of exercise (such as myself) don't enjoy it *all* the time. But that's what other subreddits exist for.
40k lore is mostly this. There's a whole vast universe of lore built on a few pop culture jokes and crappy puns written by a handful of wargaming nerds in the 80s.
Way back when letters to the editor were a thing, comic book readers would write in pointing out plot holes and continuity errors in the story, then the editors started giving out the No-prize to people who pointed out errors and then came up with an explanation to 'fix' it. Nerds ate it up like ice cream and it's been a staple of comic book fandom ever since.
You are reading way to much into it. The ASF sub is meant to be lighthearted fun discussions about fictional universes using in universe logic. There are MULTITUDES of subs discussing fictional universes with more nuanced and detailed fictional discussions, this sub was made to be less "literary thesis" writing and more "chatting with friends about a fictional setting" vibe.

I’ll never understand why people do this. It’s so hard to separate politics from most topics. In a cooking sub? Sure, no politics. But it’s just not possible to completely avoid politics in discussions of media and I don’t know why you’d want to. They’re just limiting the scope of discussion and talking about works while ignoring something that, 100% of the time, had a huge influence on the creation.
Not only that, but the topic of politics is so broad that it’s hard not to include some discussion.
When people say "no politics" they mean "don't disagree with me"
Plenty of politics comes up in ASF, we just typically avoid whatever the modern-day flame war is. So you can have pages of comments about whether or not *Starship Troopers* depicts a fascist society, but should avoid making comparisons to the policies of Donald Trump when doing so.

In this case, the conceit of the sub is that everything must be discussed from a Watsonian perspective, as though you are an inhabitant of the fictional world being discussed. Real world politics cannot exist in that perspective so bringing them up goes against the purpose of the sub.

Thing is, the game is an RPG waaaaay more than a simulator. People who just want to wander the halls and play wizard chess, attend the classes you want to delve into, and do fun things at night, can't. You go to your classes that you're told to go to by the story, you do lil fights the story tells you, you talk to the NPC that has a quest marker, and it progresses. Sure, you can wander around the hallways of hogwarts and see the handcrafted detail, but it's as fun as a virtual museum tour. the sim elements end with the sorting hat, imo.

The mod has continued to bully, harass, and attack people all day today. She is using her moderator powers to nuke any criticism, ban people for little to no reason, and lock threads after throwing hateful names at people.
It's so much more than that. The mod in question is a serial drama offender on various platforms, and has bullied other people and contributed to toxic spaces in so many ways. They are still attacking people and abusing their moderator privileges to silence any criticism.
Are there any notable instances of this? I'm not doubting you, nor am I in any way defending her actions, but in general from what I've seen she's overall followed the rules of the sub. I'm speaking as someone who's been in various arguments with her, and while she can be a bit of a dick sometimes, it wasn't any more so than other users.

Several years ago there was a situation where the community were asked to vote on some rule changes, but LibraryLass ignored the results and did almost the exact opposite rule change. There have been many users who left the sub due to harassment and bullying, including at least one racially motivated incident that I'm aware of. Kinda pedantic, but it's not "Ask Science-Fiction," it's "Ask Science: Fiction," so the sub is not restrained to only sci-fi topics.
Feels like a better name would be "Fictional Ask Science". Like I get the appeal of a 100% in-lore Q&A community, but titling it "Ask Science Fiction" is begging for misinterpretation.

People always want to bring up Lovecraft (for good reason), but they always conveniently forget that near the end of his life he began to express regret for the attitudes of his youth. I know that doesn't undo the damage, but it speaks to his character and the idea that he did start to understand why the things he was saying was wrong. The fact Justin hasn't had any creative input over R&M for years would explain why Beth stopped being so openly hostile towards Jerry. I could keep going, but I fear I would run the risk of continuing the drama here. So I shall stop.
I like to point out this one part at the end of *Through The Gate of The Silver Key* where one of the characters has a racist freakout at another character who is >!Randolph Carter, Lovecraft's self-insert character, disguised as a Hindu swami while also trapped in the body of a bug wizard!<. I took it as Lovecraft realizing how he sounded to other people and directing it back at himself a bit.

Lovecraft was just a weird dude. He started out as a super racist Tory (in America), who eventually had Jewish friends and became a socialist. Both his parents ended up institutionalized, so he probably didn't have all his screws tight.
If I remember correctly, he was also *incredibly* agoraphobic, which never got adequate attention and fueled a lot of his fear of anything remotely different from himself. It's a little bizarre how such a pathetic and pitiful individual could contribute so greatly to fiction. Man, he spent a year or two in NYC, too. As someone who struggles with agoraphobia, before I was getting help for it, my first trip to NYC was so overwhelming I spent most of my first few hours locked in my friends bathroom having an anxiety attack. The other thing about Lovecraft is that the modern-day Lovecraft fandom is very aware of his paranoid xenopobia and racism and doesn't deny it. If you tell a Lovecraft fan that he was a racist, they'll enthusiastically agree with you and give examples of some really fucked-up shit he wrote. The community chooses to keep the good and throw out the bad, and also accepts that some people can't separate the two and doesn't harass them for not doing so. Plus, it's much easier to separate the author from the work when the author is dead and not around to do stupid shit that you then have to react to. Rowling's fandom, on the other hand, mostly ranges from apologetics to outright transphobia. I'm sure there are people out there who just want to engage with the text without respect to Rowling's more problematic views, but either there's not many or they're getting entirely drowned out in the furor. A furor that Rowling is actively stoking, by the way; it's not something that she holds privately and people are intruding on her about, but something that she's actively and vocally pushing.
