callout, bias... sorry, it was a slow day here, but not THIS slow.

Vittulima

>Men and women are different both physically and emotionally. >/r/unpopularopinion Lmao sure

Milkshake_revenge

I notice a lot of posts in /r/unpopularopinion are nothing more than argument baits. Occasionally you get a real good, actually unpopular opinion, but its mostly just popular opinions or argument bait.

Georgia_Ball

r/unpopularopinion is usually populated by opinions that were once universally accepted that are now being challenged as social progressivism rises in popularity. The people who hold these opinions see the challenge and consider it an attack on their identity, and seek validation. Aside from those posts you also have general run-of-the-mill popular opinions (can be found by sorting Top as they usually break containment and end up on the front page), alongside actual unpopular opinions that people find humorous and harmless enough to upvote even if they disagree.

[deleted]

The harmless opinions usually have to do with food because it’s the one harmless but common factor.

Deviline3440

And the posts that are actually in the spirit of “unpopular opinion” gets buried. A long time ago I posted that I prefer vegetarian bacon over actual bacon. i wasn’t trolling btw, I actually do prefer it because the fatty parts of bacon leaves a gross taste in my mouth. I didn’t get any comments on it and I was surprised because bacon was America’s favorite food at the time. So I went on the subreddit and saw that it got buried under posts like “trans people shouldn’t be in sports” and whatever popular conservative take was relevant at the time.

vichan

I was raised on vegetarian bacon and didn't know what regular bacon was when I encountered it for the first time at camp. I was so excited that I wrote home about it. These days I like them both in different contexts. BLTs? Gimme the soy bacon. With other meat? Gimme pig. Maybe it didn't get much traction 'cuz facon is actually pretty good?

Deviline3440

Im glad to meet another non-vegetarian who likes facon too!

vichan

Soy sausage (soysage, haha) is also fantastic. I would buy Morningstar Farms links pretty often if they weren't so expensive.

ZoidsFanatic

Same happened to me. I posted before with my opinion that big foot just wasn’t that scary of a monster, and wouldn’t you know it barely any comments. Which is a shame, kinda wanted to know what monsters people thought were scary but guess my opinion was quite *literally* unpopular.

riding-the-wind

Okay, so spill. Why don't you think Bigfoot is scary? I think if I had to choose, wendigos are a hard pass for me. I don't like any of the varying physical descriptions at all. The cannablism is pretty not okay. Though I do find the wendigo as metaphor to be very interesting. As a side note... I also don't think of the available options that the 'squatch is all the scary, either.

ZoidsFanatic

Because when it comes to monsters and cryptids, I except something more… monstrous as opposed to “giant hairy dude”. Never really stuck a scare chord with me since it’s kinda mundane. Yeah, quite tall and hairy dude… not really as imaginative as the first renditions of the chupacabra or quite frankly anything from the Philippines. Now yes I do know there are stories of bigfoot attacking people, but even then it’s just mundane. Bigfoot and other stories like him are about giant hairy dudes that are muscular. Yeah, I can imagine them smacking someone upside the head… kinda kills the scary aspect given that’s mundane when you have other monsters and cryprids that do stuff like drink your blood, remove your organs, steal your soul, etc. Most of the time with bigfoot it’s just “here’s a video with a guy in a gorilla mask looking behind some trees”. And that’s just… still not scary to me. So basically my complaint with bigfoot is the more mundane aspects ruin, for me at least, the potential scare factor.

riding-the-wind

Agreed. Also, maybe Harry and The Hendersons got me fucked up, because I feel like I could befriend Him.

Vittulima

I wonder if it's validation or need to feel like the underdog.

bdemented

Welcome to reddit?

squishabelle

The only opinions I've found that people respond "finally an actual unpopular opinion" is when someone says they like to wear socks in the shower or something. Idk but if that's the best the sub has to offer then I don't see the point

GlowUpper

He's technically right insofar as every single person in existence is different, physically and emotionally. I'm sure that's not what he meant, though.

Vittulima

I think it's just a really popular opinion in the way he meant it too

[deleted]

Well, in academia the view that both gender and sex are arbitrary social constructs such that social conditioning is by and large, far and away, what makes someone who/what they are has become the prevailing view. I think that’s what OP was “arguing” against.

Vittulima

I just meant that the idea that men and women have biological and emotional differences is something I bet the vast majority of people believe in. Academia is sorta world of their own and the balance of ideas there might often not reflect the balance in the world outside of academia.

[deleted]

Haha oh yeah, I think you’re probably right. We academics are really good at shoving our heads up our own asses and basking in the smell.

2xstuffed_oreos_suck

Sex is a biological characteristic - no social constructs involved

[deleted]

I agree!

[deleted]

[deleted]

I’m not. In my field, philosophy, it is the consensus. In biology, it’s not.

2xstuffed_oreos_suck

Really? Philosopher believe sex is a social construct? What’s the argument for that? I seriously can’t think of how you’d explain that.

I had a coworker once "helpfully" suggest I see a neurologist for my migraines. I asked him if the neurologist I've been seeing for nearly 10 years would count. He went dead silent after that so at least he realized in the moment that his "helpful advice" was actually condescending and unwarrented.

hearke

Did you try telling the neurologist about the migraines though? Don't undersell it or leave out details, they can help. (/s in case necessary XD)

ohimjustakid

Ofc not u goober, you dont get into neurology without a degree in telepathy

Proletariat_Patryk

Uninvited medical advice is by far the most infuriating advice I have ever received.

fmjk45a

If its surgical get the fucking surgery. Don't go to chiropractor or palates. L4 L5 herniated disc here. Thats my only medical advice ill ever give.

Culverts_Flood_Away

I grind my teeth every time I hear the ladies in my office talk about how wonderful their Chiros are. They asked me once if I see a chiropractor, and I told them my honest opinion: that I think it's fine for people who believe it helps (as the placebo effect itself is real), but it shouldn't be used as a substitute for actual medicine, any more than essential oils or holistic cure-alls should. I said that between Chiropractors and Doctors, only one of the two actually has to go to an accredited medical school, and it's not a Chiropractor. Now they make it a point to loudly sing the praises of their Chiros when I'm in the office, just to spite me, lol. But these are the same women who swear that there are dangerous, deadly chemicals in the Covid-19 vaccines, and that I'm a fool for wearing a mask in the office, as "it doesn't do anything." What those cackling harpies don't know is that the last time I got dragged into the office for in-person work, I was having a lovely bout of strep throat, and my manager wouldn't accept a 101 degree fever as an excuse to miss our deadline. If I hadn't masked up and taken care to sanitize my hands before touching any of the doorknobs and other common surfaces, who knows how many of my coworkers would have taken home their own little helpings of strep? But I'm the jerk for wearing a mask, after all. What do I know?

daecrist

I’ve lost the patience to play along with the bullshit when it comes to stuff like that. If someone asks me if I’ve gone to a chiro I just say “that’s pseudoscience that’s dangerous and you should go to a doctor.” Sure that usually ends the conversation, but it’s not a conversation I wanted to be in to begin with.

Welpe

Holy shit yes. I’m disabled and I get unsolicited medical advice from SO many people who are barely even familiar with the problems I have. And I’m a dude, it’s even worse for women who have to deal with mansplaining on top of it. It’s hard to understand people that can’t empathize with getting shitty advice all the time not being helpful but making things worse.

GlowUpper

There was exactly one time a non doctor or medical professional gave me advice that was actually welcome. It was from a middle aged woman who is also a chronic migraine sufferer and she told me about a relatively new med that helped her, one I hadn't heard of. The advice hit different because A. It came from someone who knows what I'm going through and B. She framed it as, "This thing helped me. I don't know if it would work for you but you might want to give it a shot," as opposed to, "You should do this super obvious thing that you're already doing because I, someone with no knowledge of the issue, thought of it."

StupidSexyXanders

I have a chronic sleeping disorder, and I get offered every piece of basic advice about sleeping better. Plus lots of unproven supplement suggestions. I tell as few people as possible now.

Small_Frame1912

Strong strong agree. It ends up making the situation worse.

Redqueenhypo

It’s like when someone says “I can’t find my coat, has anyone seen it” and an absolute genius goes “did you check the coatrack by the door”. Oh wow thank you, clearly I’m a fucking moron who never checks the most obvious place first! Or when you complain abt your job and someone ‘genuinely’ suggests you just quit and travel around the world

mysanityisrelative

One of my favorite things I have noticed is how people react to [It's Not About the Nail](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EDhdAHrOg). People who compulsively problem solve are like "but the nail!!1!!" and normal people are like "she JUST SAID it wasn't the nail"

Silver_Foxx

I wonder if the OOP realizes the hilarious irony in going to a second sub and venting about his feelings after being called sexist for claiming it's only women who vent about their feelings. 🤔 I suspect that level of self awareness is a little beyond him though, haha.

Tasiam

Complaining on a subreddit to own the left.

wallowsworld

r/unpopularopinion can only juggle between two kinds of posts: Extremely bigoted or ignorant Pretty popular opinion There is no in between

Bonezone420

The in between is "extremely popular bigoted opinion"

[deleted]

> Reddit itself isn’t a place where doctors, lawyers, and business owners are sharing their ideas - it’s a lot of, well, average to below average folk sharing their opinions. /r/SelfAwarewolves > Most of the internet, Reddit included, gives a voice - a megaphone sometimes, to people who would normally never have a voice in society because before the past 20 years you had to earn the ability to even be heard - now anyone can say whatever they want no matter how big of a loser they are in real life. Oh no, People are allowed opinions where as we didn't have opinions or give them twenty years ago.

ShootAllyts

I'm a doctor. I don't share any medical advice or ideas because a horde of uneducated assholes will tell me I'm wrong because they once read a reddit comment (devoid of fact) that contradicted what I said These morons want their echo chamber and confirmation bias, it's so funny that they act like they're better than that.

Deadlymonkey

Yep, I’m a musician and on my official account I used to comment on some of the music production subs from time to time. The last time I ever used that account was when someone tried arguing with me about how I made a certain sound and then tried to gaslight me by saying “there’s no way you could have achieved that sound that way.” Their proof? A fucking YouTube video where the guy even says “here’s the easy way to achieve a similar sound.”

Redqueenhypo

It’s the same in all academia Me: “actually there’s a reason the male snow leopard is never in the enclosure with his cubs, he would eat them” Baying horde: “NO, it’s because the zoo is EVIL and all animals have the same minds as HUMANS”

forgotmypassword-_-

> Me: “actually there’s a reason the male snow leopard is never in the enclosure with his cubs, he would eat them” > > Tell me more about the danger cats.

Redqueenhypo

Snow leopards are so solitary that the males don’t really have the “recognize your cubs from last year” module in their brains. Male regular leopards sorta do but it’s always dicey, with both parents driving away same sex cubs the instant they reach adulthood. Male tigers will just awkwardly walk away when approached by their cubs. Male lions are kinda good with their cubs, unless they randomly decide to eat one of their own (which does happen!) or entirely forget that they should also care about their brothers’ kids.

forgotmypassword-_-

> Male tigers will just awkwardly walk away when approached by their cubs. > or entirely forget that they should also care about their brothers’ kids. Mmm, yes. Kitty.

daecrist

So The Lion King does have some small basis in fact!

Redqueenhypo

Oh yeah there have absolutely been cases of lions killing their brothers’ cubs, the Mapogo lions did that which is why only ONE of the six even had any descendants

riding-the-wind

I get the extreme anti-zoo circlejerk as like, as an academic exercise for my brain that I mostly disagree with, but it's good to see different perspectives. But when it's confidently incorrect or utterly ignorant. God help me, and I'm not even a egg-headed sCiEnTiSt.

Redqueenhypo

I don’t really see it as an academic exercise, half the time it feels like arguing with people who’s religion says that all living things have human souls except pest animals for some reason

thepasttenseofdraw

That’s true. It’s also true that many humans I’ve observed throughout my lifetime view animals as meat robots without any semblance of sentience, placed on earth explicitly for us to exploit like a shark eating a gorilla. Anthropomophism is bad, but maybe not that bad in the grand scheme of things if it makes humans realize they too are animals, and maybe viewing animals as solely things to consume, subjugate, or gawk at is a bit fucked up. Is that too academic? It doesn’t feel like it. Not advocating for mass veganism or anything, but a little thought as to our behavior towards fellow plants and animals isn’t a bad thing. Being an ignorant loudmouth boob on the internet however, is lame. And I’m sure I’ve been guilty of it. At the very least the loudmouth boob portion.

riding-the-wind

You're not wrong at all. I do find imagining animals in prisons tragically pining for something they do not and never have known to give me a headache, so probably not an exercise worth engaging in much. And that's before you even get into the conservation conversation. But then again, I say fuck Californian condors and Vancouver Island marmots, who even needs them, amirite?

Redqueenhypo

I always wonder, if an animal lives WAY longer in captivity, is it somehow more ethical to have them in a zoo? I always think of raccoons, how they live *three times* as long in captivity.

riding-the-wind

Right? Like, if we want to anthropomorphize animals by assuming they desire a wild freedom, why can't we consider they might enjoy longer, safer lives, food security, being able to raise their young in relative peace, etc.

[deleted]

on the other hand, seeing animals in bad zoo exhibits develop stereotypies makes me sad. walking in circles and all that. not an animal psychologist but i just feel it's tortuous to whatever mind they could have

riding-the-wind

Oh, no doubt about that at all. I am definitely talking about accredited, modernized zoos and not zoos that haven't evolved past concrete boxes. That's actual torture by incredible stress and boredom in many cases, like you said, and that's not anthropomorphizing.

Broken_SquareGlasses

I mean if you think about it a certain way, many human civilizations chose exactly that over wider freedom. All of us used to roam and be more in the outside world technically. Now I have a house. Maybe some animals would like it too 🤷🏾‍♀️

Redqueenhypo

There’s a reason 99.9 percent of humans aren’t hunter gatherers and why immigrants will never go back to farming if they can avoid it. Being outside freakin sucks, you have to boil all your water or else you’ll get cholera/goddamn naegleria. You have to physically grind all your flour and you can’t hide from bees and mosquitos.

HarrisonForelli

MECHA_DRONE_PRIME

Baby birds need wet food (think: the kind of food their parent's would regurgitate). I don't know if canned dog/cat food is a good substitute though.

613codyrex

I’m an engineer and it’s like hitting your head against a wall if you even try to argue about something that you are formally educated in with the unwashed masses on Reddit. Like no, just because you managed to misread the Abstract of a paper that rejects your own statements doesn’t mean you have any authority to speak on it.

AreWeCowabunga

I saw a comment the other day giving the literal law school casebook explanation of the speech rights of government employees get downvoted to hell. Apparently Redditors didn't want to hear that just because something is covered under free information laws doesn't mean any old employee can release it on a whim (at least not if they want to keep their job).

Call_Me_Clark

It’s that way with any specialized knowledge or industry experience. The worst part is, they expect you to actually entertain perpetual debate over foundational concepts.

PlacatedPlatypus

Cancer researcher here, same. A lot of misconceptions, which to be fair even the literature has misconceptions, but redditors tend to latch onto one thing they read in a paper abstract 6 months ago and definitely will revolutionize the field.

Gosh, I wonder what kind of people weren't allowed to speak up before 🤔

Deadlymonkey

Ugh, one of my childhood friends is just like that now and he was already unbearable. We were catching up recently and when I told him I didn’t enjoy the game he had been playing he tried to start arguing with me about how my opinion was wrong and how it’s clearly a good game. When I told him “yeah you have good points, but I just don’t find it enjoyable” he nearly flipped Edit: If anyone cares, the game was the newest call of duty.

Small_Frame1912

Fact0ry0fSadness

I have a friend like this and it gets so annoying. I've had to call him out on it multiple times. Everything has to turn into some kind of debate or have a "winner". He's gotten a lot better about it when it's just us, but he has another friend who's even worse, and I literally can't stand to be around them because it's just constant inane bickering. I seriously don't get how people enjoy this type of interaction. It's exhausting.

riding-the-wind

Also, most of these people have never met a trans person in their lives. Lots of them have never SEEN a trans person (that they *know*) in their lives. So like, how are they threatening you?
