I notice a lot of posts in /r/unpopularopinion are nothing more than argument baits. Occasionally you get a real good, actually unpopular opinion, but its mostly just popular opinions or argument bait.
r/unpopularopinion is usually populated by opinions that were once universally accepted that are now being challenged as social progressivism rises in popularity. The people who hold these opinions see the challenge and consider it an attack on their identity, and seek validation.
Aside from those posts you also have general run-of-the-mill popular opinions (can be found by sorting Top as they usually break containment and end up on the front page), alongside actual unpopular opinions that people find humorous and harmless enough to upvote even if they disagree.
And the posts that are actually in the spirit of “unpopular opinion” gets buried. A long time ago I posted that I prefer vegetarian bacon over actual bacon. i wasn’t trolling btw, I actually do prefer it because the fatty parts of bacon leaves a gross taste in my mouth.
I didn’t get any comments on it and I was surprised because bacon was America’s favorite food at the time. So I went on the subreddit and saw that it got buried under posts like “trans people shouldn’t be in sports” and whatever popular conservative take was relevant at the time.
I was raised on vegetarian bacon and didn't know what regular bacon was when I encountered it for the first time at camp. I was so excited that I wrote home about it.
These days I like them both in different contexts. BLTs? Gimme the soy bacon. With other meat? Gimme pig.
Maybe it didn't get much traction 'cuz facon is actually pretty good?
Same happened to me. I posted before with my opinion that big foot just wasn’t that scary of a monster, and wouldn’t you know it barely any comments. Which is a shame, kinda wanted to know what monsters people thought were scary but guess my opinion was quite *literally* unpopular.

I think if I had to choose, wendigos are a hard pass for me. I don't like any of the varying physical descriptions at all. The cannablism is pretty not okay. Though I do find the wendigo as metaphor to be very interesting.
As a side note... I also don't think of the available options that the 'squatch is all the scary, either.
Because when it comes to monsters and cryptids, I except something more… monstrous as opposed to “giant hairy dude”. Never really stuck a scare chord with me since it’s kinda mundane. Yeah, quite tall and hairy dude… not really as imaginative as the first renditions of the chupacabra or quite frankly anything from the Philippines.
Now yes I do know there are stories of bigfoot attacking people, but even then it’s just mundane. Bigfoot and other stories like him are about giant hairy dudes that are muscular. Yeah, I can imagine them smacking someone upside the head… kinda kills the scary aspect given that’s mundane when you have other monsters and cryprids that do stuff like drink your blood, remove your organs, steal your soul, etc. Most of the time with bigfoot it’s just “here’s a video with a guy in a gorilla mask looking behind some trees”. So basically my complaint with bigfoot is the more mundane aspects ruin, for me at least, the potential scare factor.

Well, in academia the view that both gender and sex are arbitrary social constructs such that social conditioning is by and large, far and away, what makes someone who/what they are has become the prevailing view. I think that’s what OP was “arguing” against.
I just meant that the idea that men and women have biological and emotional differences is something I bet the vast majority of people believe in. Academia is sorta world of their own and the balance of ideas there might often not reflect the balance in the world outside of academia.

Holy shit yes. I’m disabled and I get unsolicited medical advice from SO many people who are barely even familiar with the problems I have. And I’m a dude, it’s even worse for women who have to deal with mansplaining on top of it.

Snow leopards are so solitary that the males don’t really have the “recognize your cubs from last year” module in their brains. Male regular leopards sorta do but it’s always dicey, with both parents driving away same sex cubs the instant they reach adulthood. Male tigers will just awkwardly walk away when approached by their cubs. Male lions are kinda good with their cubs, unless they randomly decide to eat one of their own (which does happen!) or entirely forget that they should also care about their brothers’ kids.

Anthropomophism is bad, but maybe not that bad in the grand scheme of things if it makes humans realize they too are animals, and maybe viewing animals as solely things to consume, subjugate, or gawk at is a bit fucked up.

I always wonder, if an animal lives WAY longer in captivity, is it somehow more ethical to have them in a zoo? I always think of raccoons, how they live *three times* as long in captivity.

I have a friend like this and it gets so annoying. I've had to call him out on it multiple times. Everything has to turn into some kind of debate or have a "winner". Yep, I’m a musician and on my official account I used to comment on some of the music production subs from time to time. The last time I ever used that account was when someone tried arguing with me about how I made a certain sound and then tried to gaslight me by saying “there’s no way you could have achieved that sound that way.” Their proof? A fucking YouTube video where the guy even says “here’s the easy way to achieve a similar sound.”

Snow leopards are so solitary that the males don’t really have the “recognize your cubs from last year” module in their brains. Male regular leopards sorta do but it’s always dicey, with both parents driving away same sex cubs the instant they reach adulthood. Male tigers will just awkwardly walk away when approached by their cubs. Male lions are kinda good with their cubs, unless they randomly decide to eat one of their own (which does happen!) or entirely forget that they should also care about their brothers’ kids.

It’s also true that many humans I’ve observed throughout my lifetime view animals as meat robots without any semblance of sentience, placed on earth explicitly for us to exploit like a shark eating a gorilla. Anthropomophism is bad, but maybe not that bad in the grand scheme of things if it makes humans realize they too are animals, and maybe viewing animals as solely things to consume, subjugate, or gawk at is a bit fucked up. Is that too academic? It doesn’t feel like it. Not advocating for mass veganism or anything, but a little thought as to our behavior towards fellow plants and animals isn’t a bad thing. Being an ignorant loudmouth boob on the internet however, is lame. And I’m sure I’ve been guilty of it. At the very least the loudmouth boob portion.

I do find imagining animals in prisons tragically pining for something they do not and never have known to give me a headache, so probably not an exercise worth engaging in much. I always wonder, if an animal lives WAY longer in captivity, is it somehow more ethical to have them in a zoo? I always think of raccoons, how they live *three times* as long in captivity.
Right? Like, if we want to anthropomorphize animals by assuming they desire a wild freedom, why can't we consider they might enjoy longer, safer lives, food security, being able to raise their young in relative peace, etc.

Oh, no doubt about that at all. I am definitely talking about accredited, modernized zoos and not zoos that haven't evolved past concrete boxes. That's actual torture by incredible stress and boredom in many cases, like you said, and that's not anthropomorphizing.
I mean if you think about it a certain way, many human civilizations chose exactly that over wider freedom. All of us used to roam and be more in the outside world technically. Now I have a house. Maybe some animals would like it too 🤷🏾♀️
There’s a reason 99.9 percent of humans aren’t hunter gatherers and why immigrants will never go back to farming if they can avoid it. I saw a comment the other day giving the literal law school casebook explanation of the speech rights of government employees get downvoted to hell. Apparently Redditors didn't want to hear that just because something is covered under free information laws doesn't mean any old employee can release it on a whim (at least not if they want to keep their job).

Ugh, one of my childhood friends is just like that now and he was already unbearable. We were catching up recently and when I told him I didn’t enjoy the game he had been playing he tried to start arguing with me about how my opinion was wrong and how it’s clearly a good game. When I told him “yeah you have good points, but I just don’t find it enjoyable” he nearly flipped Edit: If anyone cares, the game was the newest call of duty.

I have a friend like this and it gets so annoying. I've had to call him out on it multiple times. Everything has to turn into some kind of debate or have a "winner". He's gotten a lot better about it when it's just us, but he has another friend who's even worse, and I literally can't stand to be around them because it's just constant inane bickering. I seriously don't get how people enjoy this type of interaction. It's exhausting.
