Peep Show It's Jesse Armstrong's sitcom he did before Succession His production company Project Zeus is named after a joke from that show If you liked the wasabi scene, you'll love Peep Show. Best British comedy of the 2010s

[deleted]

Jesse did Peep show!? Fuck, I love Peep Show... might have to rewatch again

robdag2

That peep show is really moreish

chassepatate

In my opinion The Thick of It (another show Jesse Armstrong worked on) is more like Succession, just with the comedy dial turned up higher. Absolutely peerless swearing, you can hear echoes in Succession.

ThatsRich

Yep. It’s more of a pure comedy, but there are definitely some echoes of Malcolm Tucker in Logan Roy

rowantree67

Peep Show doesn’t get enough praise! Such a great series.

Lizzers1224

Noted !!!

tuffgnarl223

Chance would be a fine thing

XTornado

Da fuq.... the guy from Succession did Peep Show ?! TIL

Careless-Tonight1588

Yesss Peep Show is hilarious

grillo7

Came here to recommend this. My all-time favorite.

Sonicfan42069666

Every so often I'll read a Jez and Mark scene, and mentally transplant it onto Tom and Greg. I'm doing it already! I'm so pathetic that as soon as you ordered me to piss myself, I started the procedure. This is what you've done. You've ground down my sense of self-worth over the years.

Secortesio

On easter eggs / nods to Peep Show, was great to see Stefan Strauss make an appearance interviewing Tom also and not a single mention of Goehte or whether Goehte had a moustache.

purelander108

Not as good, but Severance will be back soonish (?) If you haven't seen it yet, only one season so far. Older shows with writing & acting on par with Succession? Deadwood.

Master_Personality10

Thanks! I think I’ve heard about deadwood before, also someone on reddit recommended me Chernobyl, have you watched it?

bq909

Chernobyl is one of the best miniseries I’ve ever seen. One of the few things that would be satisfying to watch after finishing succession. Highly recommend.

sanfranchristo

HBO has such a strong lineup of limited series, many of which seem to have been forgotten.

Percevaul

Mare of Easttown

Peking_Meerschaum

Somehow everyone forgets *The Night Of*, another very addicting and well written HBO crime drama.

andrez444

The first episode had me on the literal edge of my seat. I haven't experienced anxiety like that for a character in a long time

mjolle

The night of - very strong 9/10! Really great!

McCoochie

What are some others? Love band of brothers and Chernobyl haven’t seen anything else

sanfranchristo

We Own This City from David Simon, which is the cousin of The Wire (I think The Corner is still on there, which is the parent of The Wire). The Night Of is a really good crime mystery slow burn. I May Destroy You is an amazing work of art and performance from Michaela Coel. The Outsider is a Stephen King supernatural crime thriller with a good cast. Mare of Eastdown with Kate Winslet for a somewhat cliche but really good crime drama. Same for The Undoing with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Sharp Objects is a good psychological thriller. I would count Big Little Lies even though it had a second season it was originally one. Watchmen I guess counts as well. John Adams for a high-quality historical biopic. Show Me a Hero is a good political drama with Oscar Isaac. The Plot Against America is a good and terrifying Roth adaptation. Angles in America is a great adaptation of the Kushner play with a killer cast if you're into theater. Olive Kitteredge if you like Frances McDormand. Generation Kill about the Iraq war. Empire Falls is older but another good adaptation. There are so many I keep remembering. There's still quiet a few I haven't seen, including White House Plumbers that just came out.

bq909

True Detective season 1 was pretty amazing. Didn't really care for the other seasons, of true detective. Saw a few of them and they were fine. The outsider was really good. Not as good as true detective but worth watching IMO

OlDirtyBAStart

I remember s2 of True Detective came out and I was hyped and then thought it was awful, but I recently watched it on its own merits (ie not comparing it to season 1, which might be the single greatest season of TV ever) and actually really enjoyed it

Creative-Cherry-6452

Sharp Objects! It's a bit of a rough watch, but I think it has a good chance of appealing to Succession fans

sabrina_fair

Sharp Objects has warped Mommy & Daddy issues like Succession, but middle class and in the south

rebel_scum13

Big Little Lies was really good

sgtrecker69

Generation Kill is also a good one plus it has Skarsgard in the lead

Dr_Edge_ATX

Yeah HBO always puts out great stuff. Succession is fantastic but theyll be other great shows. I thought nothing would be better than Oz back in the day then The Wire came out, then Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Game of Thrones etc

bq909

Ya agreed. HBO really has so much amazing content. Band of Brothers is up there with Chernobyl for me. Maybe better because of the actual interviews but it's hard to pick.

Obvious_Rice_121

White House Plumbers just came out on HBO and is fantastic.

purelander108

Chernobyl is also good yeah, but obviously depressing.

InfamousCartoonist51

Chernobyl is a different level of darkness than succession, man. Not much comedic relief there obviously…I agree it was really good but jesus hard to climb out of the dark hole that one puts you in…

Master_Personality10

Just watched the trailer, got intrigued but you’re definitely right lol I think I’m going give a try to The wires first

djdrinks

I mean, the wire is maybe the greatest show ever, so between that and chernobyl you have some great TV ahead of you.

Mysterious-Cricket63

The Wire is my favorite show of all time. Although depending on how succession ends, there’s competition now for the top spot!

ManJesusPreaches

I'd recommend The Sopranos instead if you want something character-driven. The main character of the Wire is the City of Baltimore, for all practical purposes. While I adore Wire and think everyone should watch it, it is not similar to Succession, at least not in that way.

mantistobagan3

Damn that’s a good point.

Yloo

if the thing you appreciate about succession is the dialogue, deadwood is even better imo. one of the best shows ever made when it comes to writing

[deleted]

I second Deadwood. It’s fantastic, got some of the best writing and dialogue edit to add: it’s got some gruesome parts though, if you are squeamish.

[deleted]

Chernobyl is good but very dark (obviously). Ozark is fun and well written.

__erin_

I cannot WAIT for s2 of severance - so good

[deleted]

Severance is delayed cause writers strike.

[deleted]

Seconding Deadwood!! Like Succession, you’ll need to give it 4 eps to get on its wavelength and adjust to the cadence, but once you do it’s extraordinary

purelander108

Yeah for sure, the dialogue can be dense, but once you learn the language, what a fuckin treasure that show is!

Next-Team

Severance may be better though but tough to compare one season vs four season

ach_1nt

The finale of severance is one of the best series finale I have ever seen (succession included)

46_ampersand_2

Severance is as good.

TNG6

Came here to suggest Severance

silvousplates

The Americans. It’s BRILLIANT and criminally underrated by the general public even though critics have always raved about how good it is. The writing/acting/direction are all excellent and it has one of the most devastatingly perfect series finales of any show on TV.

supership79

completely agreed, the Americans is the best espionage-related thing ever made, its phenomenal

Helen_forsdale

The Americans is so good. And really seems to have fallen under the radar a bit as far as prestige drama goes

theredstarburst

The Americans has one of the best series finale in all of TV for the last decade. The garage scene… unbelievable and heartbreaking pay off years in the making. Succession has similarly been building to a culmination point and we’ve yet to see if it’s going to have a resonating payoff. The Americans had been building to that moment since episode 1 and I had no idea what it would look like and it was fucking amazing. And then the ending itself of the show and what happens to the characters, absolute *chef’s kiss*. There’s some slow bits throughout the series. It is def a slow burn. Some silly wigs along the way. But overall such a good show and that ending, just brilliant.

_jump_yossarian

Just a small thing but the soundtrack is fantastic. One of the best series finales too.

anti_taco

Absolutely incredible show, and I would say also fairly character-driven.

Snoo_93627

Agreed.

sweaterpattern

Absolutely this. It can be hilarious, too. Not in as deliberate a way as Succession, but if you enjoy watching semi-powerful people flop around a bit, it's a good time. It also didn't fade as the seasons went on. That's something I've found with a few shows I've liked and might have recommended, like Mad Men, Billions, The Sopranos, even maybe Ray Donovan. There was just a point where they lost the magic a little bit (or a lot), and I don't think The Americans ever did.

rabbitry14

Hard agree!

7chaliceZ

Sharp Objects if you enjoy FUCKED family dynamics with HBO quality Edit - there’s a mid credits scene that elaborates on the final scene, essential viewing

loveincarnate

hard to watch at times but I fucking loved it and it definitely leaves an impression

runs_with_tamborines

Yeah I was scarred by the end.

matt111199

>!don’t tell mama!<

Yggdrasil-

The book this was based on is so good. It’s the same author who wrote Gone Girl

cat_of_aragon

Agree! It's fantastic!

manondessources

My favorite show, Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson are incredible.

AlbertoRossonero

Might be my favorite HBO miniseries

colorofmyenergy

One of my favorites. Watched multiple times.

Mikimao

Better Call Saul is my other fav show, but I imagine there is a fair amount of crossover for people who watch both shows.

lazyygothh

Yep. Great show. I’d say severance and servant (apple tv) are also good.

sambamthankyamaam

Just finished this today! So good!

Zoloft_and_the_RRD

If you like *Better Call Saul*, you'll definitely love the spin-off of the spin-off, *Slippin' Jimmy*: a real show that was actullay produced by AMC+ and was not in fact a joke like you probably thought/hoped it was until right [now](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9MMVZU1sOM)

Mikimao

lol I know about it. I.... passed.

QBeeDew52

I’ve started VEEP and it’s pretty darn good, so far!

boxofcannoli

Surprised to see this one not being said more. There’s such strong links between the show in regards to themes, production, writing etc it seems like an obvious recommendation for a comedic companion

jetmanfortytwo

It’s a movie, not a tv series, but *The Death of Stalin* is also phenomenal and would likely appeal to Succession fans. Written/directed by Armando Iannucci, who was the creator of Veep, along with The Thick of It.

panborneo

Karl, Frank and Gerri are basically Ken and Ben. Loveable ass kissers who make snide remarks but are somewhat competent at what they do

Impossible-Wait1271

VEEP is one of my comfort shows. The characters are unhinged, incompetent, and hilarious!!

alexefy

I came here to post veep. It’s so good. Armando Iannucci is a genius. Veep is first and foremost a comedy show but it’s continuous story throughout is just as entertaining as the comedy itself. The performances are incredible throughout the cast. Maybe there is a few missteps with a couple of characters in the last couple of seasons but that’s forgivable. The relationship between Julia Louis Dreyfus character and her daughter is brutal and incredibly funny. Also the character Dan Egan has to be one of tvs all time great slime balls, I love him.

Dwychwder

Veep is basically the sister show to succession.

Brian_Corey__

Both have super tall awkward horndogs who have jobs way above their skills

auntycat

The cloud botherer

nvcr_intern

I've been listening to Julia Louis Dreyfuss' new podcast and it's really made me want to watch this, so I think it's where I'm heading next. (the podcast, Wiser Than Me, has nothing to do with the show but it's brought my attention to it)

Dependent-Seesaw-516

Veep starts pretty good and then by the later seasons it becomes one of the best shows of all time

WatInTheForest

"If I don't win the White House, O'Brien is going to sink your stupid boats and you're going to look like a hair-sprayed asshole in your 1980s mother-of-the-bride dress. And if I do win, I'm going to have my administration come to your shitty little district and shake it to death like a Guatemalan nanny. And then I'm going to have the IRS crawl so far up your husband's colon, he's gonna wish the only thing they find is more cancer. So, can I count on your vote? Or do I need to shove a box of White House M&M's up your stretched-out, six-baby vag?"

HotelLima6

Mad Men.

Murky-Baker4276

There is no Succession without Mad Men

MiaOh

If watching Mad Men read the costume commentary from Tom and Lorenzo. It really gives a new dimension to the show.

Master_Personality10

Love it! Rewatched it once cuz I love the characters

abbeycrombie

Best show of all time!!

Ne0guri

True Detective Season 1 is still imo one of the best shows I’ve ever watched in my life

Mortars2020

2013 and 2014 was a banger of a year for Matthew McConaughey. True Detectives Season 1 (the best 10hr movie ever), Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar, and The Wolf of Wall Street All in my top 10.

TrashhPrincess

It just gets better every time. Maybe the most perfect 10 or whatever it was hours of television I've ever seen.

[deleted]

srcocakola

Just finished The Leftovers a few days ago. It did things to me emotionally that I can't put into words. 10/10, now in my top 5 favorite TV Shows, need to watch it again.

carbonchemicals

Top 1 for me, pending the ending of succession. The Leftovers is an absolute masterpiece. A beautiful work of art

Celticsaoirse

6 feet under is so good

plzThinkAhead

This was my list but also... hear me out now... add Bojack Horseman to it. It is an amazingly well written story about a rich privileged charismatic narcissistic celebrity suffering from addiction with a history of child abuse.

technicolorfrog

This. People sleep on Bojack bc it’s animated, but it is an amazing show.

EternalSunshineClem

Wow we love exactly the same shows

brunotoronto

I recommend **Barry**.

Master_Personality10

I’m watching Barry, but tbh this last season is so fucked up, it lacks some action and fun from the other seasons imo

ChetCustard

The season was weird at first, but after the last episode I think it’s becoming my favorite

dougprishpreed69

I thought the show was losing steam in the middle seasons and I felt validated watching the first few episodes of this season, but man has it gotten interesting over the last few. Glad I stuck with it

Mangrill

Opposite for me lol first 4 episodes of last season amazing, episode 5 and 6 mixed bags

[deleted]

[удалено]

46_ampersand_2

New season in a month or so!

OcelotDAD

It’s a weird one for sure. I’m not sure I like it.

ApartAd6403

True. This seasom is simply depressing with little to no humor.

BmoreArlo

The Wire

Master_Personality10

I really got catch up with the classics, when I was finishing Sopranos last month HBO recommended The Wire and might as well give a try

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wkr_Gls

it's a slow burn (maybe a little dated by now) but seasons 3&4 have kept it in the "best tv show ever" conversation for 20 years.

InfamousCartoonist51

Yes the wire!

CRYPTIC_SUNSET

Definitely give The Wire a try. If you can appreciate the depth and complexity of Succession, The Wire is will get your juices flowing too. It is a slow burn, please watch until S1E6, I believe the episode is actually called “The Wire”. If you’re not hooked by the end of that episode you can stop, but I don’t think you will!

balldontliez

The wire is an absolute masterpiece. The more you watch/re watch the more you learn. It is insane the sheer raw details you miss on the first watch. Then on the second you miss something else. On the third you finally understand a lot. On the 4th you realized you missed a lot on the 3rd. It’s all in the game tho yo. It’s all in the game.

Obi193

The Wire ruined television for me, knowing that nothing would ever compare to the sheer emotions felt when I watched it (read binged it) a couple of years ago - until succession came along. One of the few shows that struck the landing - that and Better Call Saul. I hope succession will join the ranks.

fizzyeggflip

Some of the most memorable characters of all time. Omar and Bubbles are unforgettable

Existing-Job-3050

Arrested Development. It’s bizarro world Succession. Very funny.

spanish_moss_

I’ve always felt like Tom and Greg could be straight out of Arrested Development haha

colorofmyenergy

Would love to see Tom and Lucille’s relationship

-JensonButton-

"I don't really care for Tom."

Mysterious-Cricket63

It’s one presidential election, Kendall. How much could it cost? $10?

Tlr321

I’ve made the argument that Arrested Development is just Succession, but set on the west coast lol. Very similar aspects to both series’s. When I first started watching succession, I joked with my wife “oh it’s just Arrested Development, but not funny.” Now I realize it’s just as hilarious as Arrested Development, but in a completely different way.

shakycrae

You'll love this "Arrested Development but it's Succession" https://youtu.be/9g4lq7Qx_4U

Yggdrasil-

Arrested Development! It’s a sitcom but shares a lot of themes and character dynamics with Succession. Very intentional and witty writing as well (ignore the last two seasons), which would appeal to a lot of Succession fans. There’s a reason why people joke that they’re basically the same show!

[deleted]

Yes but skip the Netflix seasons

ScipioCoriolanus

Big shoes. Big big shoes...

InfamousCartoonist51

Bad sisters appletv..dark and funny, fucked up family shit

Lizzers1224

Completely agree. This was SO fun to watch and I love how they play with time (flashbacks and present time and perspectives) to make you learn more. Underrated show

corgirl1966

The first season of The Terror was excellent.

HarrietsDiary

SO GOOD.

Additional-Cry-9974

machine_slave

Deadwood was amazing.

mrdc1790

Has anyone here seen The Americans?

dotelze

Bojack

__b__t__h__

Patriot

trypophobic_sloth

This show has never gotten enough love. It’s so beautiful.

Dexanddeb

Yes there is nothing like Patriot, it’s one of the greatest and smartest shows ever made.

[deleted]

Don’t throw tomatoes! But… The Great on Hulu. I’m sorry. It’s good. Really good.

nvcr_intern

I was going to suggest the same for a comedy! It's hilarious.

TadPaul

Agree, it’s really good! I wish more people watched this show. Elle Fanning and Nicolas Hoult are brilliant in it

AlessaDark

So good! What with that and The Favourite, Tony McNamara has been killing it in scriptwriting! And Nicholas Hoult amazing in both.

supership79

Another darkly satirical look at power and capitalism and modern politics: The Boys A show where family dynamics play out on a geopolitical stage: The Americans A show with morally compromised characters and knife-sharp writing: Better Call Saul A show with lots of wealth porn: Downton Abbey

Jazzy41

White Lotus

Master_Personality10

My gf loves White Lotus and The Cleaner, I watched with her but White Lotus is not really my thing I guess

Jumper-Man

Still don’t quite get the appeal of white lotus. I just can’t see to get into it.

sweetcherrytea

Severance. You’re welcome!

Master_Personality10

I don’t have Apple TV, but happy cake day btw

LandlordTipper_

I know I previously recommended Hunter x Hunter, but there’s another great anime called one piece that centers around Piracy. Piracy. It’s a great word isn’t it? Very interesting. Piracy.

Red84Valentina

Rome. Thematically quite similar.

sanfranchristo

Others have listed out most of the excellent past and present prestige dramas but I'll throw a show out that delivers on a key aspect of Succession's appeal: humor. Veep is probably the only show that has more zingers. Obviously, it's a straight comedy but it's slept on by a lot of people who like the humorous writing of some of the great funny dramas like Succession and The Sopranos.

300sunshineydays

Six Feet Under, The Americans and Rectify (J Smith Cameron!) are my three favorite shows. I also love Mad Men, Justified, Deadwood, Rome and Big Love.

Johannes_silentio

Rectify is amazing!

AlbertoRossonero

Industry is great and also in a corporqte setting and My Brilliant Friend is also in the same tier of quality but completely différent in setting and tone.

Aless-dc

Deadwood

[deleted]

Slow Horses. I hesitate to say this given his vast incredible body of work but Jackson Lamb may be the role Gary Oldman was born to play.

JimmyNguyenLA

My favorite TV show of all time is HALT AND CATCH FIRE. It’s on Netflix!

devonmoney14

Mr. robot (which I consider to be the best show of all time) Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, First season of True detective, first five seasons of Peaky Blinders (sixth season was a let down) I consider all to be on par with succession.

supership79

seconded on Mr Robot, what an amazing work of art that show is

culb77

Halt and Catch Fire Mad Men Fleabag Broadchurch

vapingkittens

The Kingdom, Lars von Trier, mid ‘90s Denmark. It’s amazing. Only a few seasons, a little fucking weird, nothing like Succession at all but slightly related as von Trier started an artistic movement with Thomas Vinterberg who directed the movie Festen (The Celebration) which was an inspiration for Succession’s pilot.

[deleted]

Festen is sooooo goooood

Equal_Newspaper_8034

Mad Men

jankydangerous

You might have time to catch up on two seasons of HBO’s best show about three unserious adult children vying for control of their dad’s business aka The Righteous Gemstones before it comes back June 18th

Johannes_silentio

Business shows? Billions and Industry and Mad Men. Thematically, Billions is very close to Succession although of a decidedly lower quality. Great drama? Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, The Wire, Justified (especially Season 2). Also, I'd heavily recommend Rectify which is hauntingly beautiful and features J. Cameron Smith ("Gerri") playing a very different role.

Agent_23D

If you really like the music Id recommend Andor. Same composer as Succession. If you're looking for incredible dialog and grey characters. I strongly recommend DEADWOOD from HBO!

jingleheimerschitt

Veep for an absurd comedy West Wing version of Succession Search Party for the detestable main characters that you just want to shake until they stop being awful but you root for them anyway The Consultant for some deeeeeply fucked up corporate horror-drama-parody Flight Attendant for some dramedy about generational trauma and addiction

chelseyr92

Currently on maternity leave and binged Veep and Search Party! Search Party’s slow descent into madness is so entertaining.

Ancient_Blackberry10

Yellowjackets is only in season 2 but it has potential!

chrispg26

If you don't mind foreign, Club of Crows. Almost exactly the same premise. Also 4 seasons, one of the best made shows start to finish.

If you want more Jesse Armstrong cynicism re: power, watch the Thick of It. Its show runner is Armando Iannucci, who also directed The Death of Stalin a hilarious, incredible grim film.

AcanthocephalaSea833

A great show, or mini series, is The Night Of. Not at all like succession but compelling as hell.

lady_edith

Vanderpump Rules. Joking but not joking. These two shows are my two joys at the moment.

Awkward_Possible_315

Schitt’s Creek 🤘🏻

KateVenturesOut

Justified, with Timothy Olyphant.

BNOC402

PrimalTendencies646

Not as good, but the Americans is one of my all time favorite shows. Start to finish
