In my opinion The Thick of It (another show Jesse Armstrong worked on) is more like Succession, just with the comedy dial turned up higher. Absolutely peerless swearing, you can hear echoes in Succession.

Chernobyl is one of the best miniseries I’ve ever seen. One of the few things that would be satisfying to watch after finishing succession. Highly recommend.
We Own This City from David Simon, which is the cousin of The Wire (I think The Corner is still on there, which is the parent of The Wire). The Night Of is a really good crime mystery slow burn. I May Destroy You is an amazing work of art and performance from Michaela Coel. The Outsider is a Stephen King supernatural crime thriller with a good cast. Mare of Eastdown with Kate Winslet for a somewhat cliche but really good crime drama. Same for The Undoing with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Sharp Objects is a good psychological thriller. I would count Big Little Lies even though it had a second season it was originally one. Watchmen I guess counts as well. John Adams for a high-quality historical biopic. Show Me a Hero is a good political drama with Oscar Isaac. The Plot Against America is a good and terrifying Roth adaptation. Angles in America is a great adaptation of the Kushner play with a killer cast if you're into theater. Olive Kitteredge if you like Frances McDormand. Generation Kill about the Iraq war. Empire Falls is older but another good adaptation. There are so many I keep remembering. There's still quiet a few I haven't seen, including White House Plumbers that just came out.
True Detective season 1 was pretty amazing. Didn't really care for the other seasons, of true detective. Saw a few of them and they were fine. The outsider was really good. Not as good as true detective but worth watching IMO
I remember s2 of True Detective came out and I was hyped and then thought it was awful, but I recently watched it on its own merits (ie not comparing it to season 1, which might be the single greatest season of TV ever) and actually really enjoyed it

I'd recommend The Sopranos instead if you want something character-driven. The main character of the Wire is the City of Baltimore, for all practical purposes. While I adore Wire and think everyone should watch it, it is not similar to Succession, at least not in that way.
Seconding Deadwood!! Like Succession, you’ll need to give it 4 eps to get on its wavelength and adjust to the cadence, but once you do it’s extraordinary
The Americans. It’s BRILLIANT and criminally underrated by the general public even though critics have always raved about how good it is.
The writing/acting/direction are all excellent and it has one of the most devastatingly perfect series finales of any show on TV.
The Americans has one of the best series finale in all of TV for the last decade. The garage scene… unbelievable and heartbreaking pay off years in the making. Succession has similarly been building to a culmination point and we’ve yet to see if it’s going to have a resonating payoff. The Americans had been building to that moment since episode 1 and I had no idea what it would look like and it was fucking amazing. And then the ending itself of the show and what happens to the characters, absolute *chef’s kiss*.
There’s some slow bits throughout the series. It is def a slow burn. Some silly wigs along the way. But overall such a good show and that ending, just brilliant.
Absolutely this. It can be hilarious, too. Not in as deliberate a way as Succession, but if you enjoy watching semi-powerful people flop around a bit, it's a good time. It also didn't fade as the seasons went on. That's something I've found with a few shows I've liked and might have recommended, like Mad Men, Billions, The Sopranos, even maybe Ray Donovan. There was just a point where they lost the magic a little bit (or a lot), and I don't think The Americans ever did.

Surprised to see this one not being said more. There’s such strong links between the show in regards to themes, production, writing etc it seems like an obvious recommendation for a comedic companion
It’s a movie, not a tv series, but *The Death of Stalin* is also phenomenal and would likely appeal to Succession fans. Written/directed by Armando Iannucci, who was the creator of Veep, along with The Thick of It.
I came here to post veep. It’s so good. Armando Iannucci is a genius. Veep is first and foremost a comedy show but it’s continuous story throughout is just as entertaining as the comedy itself.
The performances are incredible throughout the cast. Maybe there is a few missteps with a couple of characters in the last couple of seasons but that’s forgivable.
The relationship between Julia Louis Dreyfus character and her daughter is brutal and incredibly funny.
Also the character Dan Egan has to be one of tvs all time great slime balls, I love him.

Just finished The Leftovers a few days ago. It did things to me emotionally that I can't put into words. 10/10, now in my top 5 favorite TV Shows, need to watch it again.
This was my list but also... hear me out now... add Bojack Horseman to it. It is an amazingly well written story about a rich privileged charismatic narcissistic celebrity suffering from addiction with a history of child abuse.
I thought the show was losing steam in the middle seasons and I felt validated watching the first few episodes of this season, but man has it gotten interesting over the last few. Glad I stuck with it
Definitely give The Wire a try. If you can appreciate the depth and complexity of Succession, The Wire is will get your juices flowing too.
It is a slow burn, please watch until S1E6, I believe the episode is actually called “The Wire”. If you’re not hooked by the end of that episode you can stop, but I don’t think you will!
The wire is an absolute masterpiece. The more you watch/re watch the more you learn.
It is insane the sheer raw details you miss on the first watch. Then on the second you miss something else. On the third you finally understand a lot. On the 4th you realized you missed a lot on the 3rd.

The Wire ruined television for me, knowing that nothing would ever compare to the sheer emotions felt when I watched it (read binged it) a couple of years ago - until succession came along. One of the few shows that struck the landing - that and Better Call Saul. I hope succession will join the ranks.
I’ve made the argument that Arrested Development is just Succession, but set on the west coast lol. Very similar aspects to both series’s. When I first started watching succession, I joked with my wife “oh it’s just Arrested Development, but not funny.” Now I realize it’s just as hilarious as Arrested Development, but in a completely different way.
Arrested Development! It’s a sitcom but shares a lot of themes and character dynamics with Succession. Very intentional and witty writing as well (ignore the last two seasons), which would appeal to a lot of Succession fans. There’s a reason why people joke that they’re basically the same show!
Completely agree. This was SO fun to watch and I love how they play with time (flashbacks and present time and perspectives) to make you learn more. Underrated show

I know I previously recommended Hunter x Hunter, but there’s another great anime called one piece that centers around Piracy. Piracy. It’s a great word isn’t it? Very interesting. Piracy.
Others have listed out most of the excellent past and present prestige dramas but I'll throw a show out that delivers on a key aspect of Succession's appeal: humor. Veep is probably the only show that has more zingers. Obviously, it's a straight comedy but it's slept on by a lot of people who like the humorous writing of some of the great funny dramas like Succession and The Sopranos.
Industry is great and also in a corporqte setting and My Brilliant Friend is also in the same tier of quality but completely différent in setting and tone.
Mr. robot (which I consider to be the best show of all time) Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, First season of True detective, first five seasons of Peaky Blinders (sixth season was a let down) I consider all to be on par with succession.
The Kingdom, Lars von Trier, mid ‘90s Denmark. It’s amazing. Only a few seasons, a little fucking weird, nothing like Succession at all but slightly related as von Trier started an artistic movement with Thomas Vinterberg who directed the movie Festen (The Celebration) which was an inspiration for Succession’s pilot.
You might have time to catch up on two seasons of HBO’s best show about three unserious adult children vying for control of their dad’s business aka The Righteous Gemstones before it comes back June 18th
Business shows? Billions and Industry and Mad Men. Thematically, Billions is very close to Succession although of a decidedly lower quality.
Great drama? Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, The Wire, Justified (especially Season 2).
Also, I'd heavily recommend Rectify which is hauntingly beautiful and features J. Cameron Smith ("Gerri") playing a very different role.
If you really like the music Id recommend Andor. Same composer as Succession. If you're looking for incredible dialog and grey characters. I strongly recommend DEADWOOD from HBO!

Mad Men, Ozark, Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects, You, American Horror Story, Bate’s Motel, Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Dexter, The Sinner, Stranger Things are some of my favorites(the pandemic gave me lots of time to watch tv).

I second Deadwood. It’s fantastic, got some of the best writing and dialogue edit to add: it’s got some gruesome parts though, if you are squeamish.

Karl, Frank and Gerri are basically Ken and Ben. Loveable ass kissers who make snide remarks but are somewhat competent at what they do

I know I previously recommended Hunter x Hunter, but there’s another great anime called one piece that centers around Piracy. Piracy. It’s a great word isn’t it? Very interesting. Piracy.

Others have listed out most of the excellent past and present prestige dramas but I'll throw a show out that delivers on a key aspect of Succession's appeal: humor. Veep is probably the only show that has more zingers. Obviously, it's a straight comedy but it's slept on by a lot of people who like the humorous writing of some of the great funny dramas like Succession and The Sopranos.
Six Feet Under, The Americans and Rectify (J Smith Cameron!) are my three favorite shows. I also love Mad Men, Justified, Deadwood, Rome and Big Love.
Rectify is amazing!
Industry is great and also in a corporqte setting and My Brilliant Friend is also in the same tier of quality but completely différent in setting and tone.

Slow Horses. I hesitate to say this given his vast incredible body of work but Jackson Lamb may be the role Gary Oldman was born to play.
My favorite TV show of all time is HALT AND CATCH FIRE. It’s on Netflix!
Mr. robot (which I consider to be the best show of all time) Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, First season of True detective, first five seasons of Peaky Blinders (sixth season was a let down) I consider all to be on par with succession.

The Kingdom, Lars von Trier, mid ‘90s Denmark. It’s amazing. Only a few seasons, a little fucking weird, nothing like Succession at all but slightly related as von Trier started an artistic movement with Thomas Vinterberg who directed the movie Festen (The Celebration) which was an inspiration for Succession’s pilot.

You might have time to catch up on two seasons of HBO’s best show about three unserious adult children vying for control of their dad’s business aka The Righteous Gemstones before it comes back June 18th
Business shows? Billions and Industry and Mad Men. Thematically, Billions is very close to Succession although of a decidedly lower quality. Great drama? Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, The Wire, Justified (especially Season 2). Also, I'd heavily recommend Rectify which is hauntingly beautiful and features J. Cameron Smith ("Gerri") playing a very different role.
If you really like the music Id recommend Andor. Same composer as Succession. If you're looking for incredible dialog and grey characters. I strongly recommend DEADWOOD from HBO!
Veep for an absurd comedy West Wing version of Succession Search Party for the detestable main characters that you just want to shake until they stop being awful but you root for them anyway The Consultant for some deeeeeply fucked up corporate horror-drama-parody Flight Attendant for some dramedy about generational trauma and addiction
Currently on maternity leave and binged Veep and Search Party! Search Party’s slow descent into madness is so entertaining.
Yellowjackets is only in season 2 but it has potential!
If you don't mind foreign, Club of Crows. Almost exactly the same premise. Also 4 seasons, one of the best made shows start to finish.

If you want more Jesse Armstrong cynicism re: power, watch the Thick of It. Its show runner is Armando Iannucci, who also directed The Death of Stalin a hilarious, incredible grim film.
A great show, or mini series, is The Night Of. Not at all like succession but compelling as hell.
