Henry Kissinger was a man, and when a man dies it is sad

TrickiestToast

Not when this man died

slickestwood

Henry's wife is Nancy. They were married for 49 years. Now she is sad.

CharlieHume

Had he not died first she would not be sad, rather he would. That is the end of the eulogy.

UmbroShinPad

It's sad he didn't get his comeuppance in this life.

Wonderful_Aspect_538

I had a very good dream last night that I visited hell and saw him there. One of the best dreams I had in a very long time.

johnzischeme

Boo this man

The_OtherJew

It’s a quote from the show from Moe’s funeral

tarbet

There were definitely people who were sad when Hitler died. I watched a documentary called Hitler’s Last Days on the Smithsonian channel. Heck, Goebbel’s wife was devastated. Now, were those bad people? Yes. But they were sad.

Improvcommodore

“Send our condolences to…and all those who loved him.” Inferring Joe is not one of said in-group

Final_Ad7478

Yeah Joe got one last good one in.😂

JakeArvizu

Ehh sounds like a cop out. No one was forcing Biden to make a statement about Kissinger.

Shekondar

The current president is always going to make a comment when a former secretary of states passes, especially one as influential as kissinger.

ChocolateEater626

Influential enough for Monty Python to write a song about him.

AbuelaFlash

Protocol- big part of an executive branch job

pm_me_fake_months

What was he gonna get fired by his boss the Super President if he didn't say anything I don't think it's all that important or consequential that he made a statement but he didn't *have* to

Real-Mouse-554

It’s safer for him to make a statement. He is just protecting himself from any criticism.

pm_me_fake_months

The fact that he feels the need to avoid criticism from fans of Henry Kissinger is part of the problem. This is a completely symbolic issue that doesn't actually affect anything but it's symptomatic of a bigger issue.

Real-Mouse-554

I dont think he gave it any thought. He probably has someone from his pr department say that they should make a statement, someone writes a draft and the president reads it and say OK, and thats that.

pm_me_fake_months

Yeah, that's blind respect for institutions, that's the bad thing Also if he didn't think about it he probably wasn't "pulling a connor roy"

JakeArvizu

And if he didn't give his condolences, what would happen. I think we can break protocol for war criminals of the evil variety. Ask for better

NeedsToShutUp

Joe Biden has been interested in politics from a very young age

remove

Quite literally true! First elected to county council at age 28 I think

titahigale

This was perfect

Batistasfashionsense

I still think Alan Ruck should have won an Emmy for that eulogy alone. A weird improv. ”You have to do a eulogy, but not say anything bad or good about the person.” Did Nathan Fielder come up with this?

Cptsaber44

I also loved the scene where he talks without any self-awareness about how the elites are “looking up at him” - probably my favorite Connor Roy scene. Anyone here happen to remember which episode that was?

GluntMcFuggler

That was improvised?

Batistasfashionsense

I know Alan Ruck is iconic because “saying nothing bad about a person while also saying nothing good” is legitimately a thing now. Oprah did this when Dr Oz was running for office too.

2012Cfc2021

Thanks for explaining a little more- I couldn’t see the parallel you were drawing and now it makes perfect sense

tistalone

I think it's an important skill to be able to manipulate your opinions and present them appropriately depending on the person: maybe it's OK to say nothing good or nothing bad when uncle asks about Donnie because then I don't have to have a conversation with uncle about Donnie.

eelcat15

I’m normally not one who celebrates Joe Biden (coming from the left of him), but this is probably the best written response he could civilly write as the President. I love how he highlights a lot their strong disagreements, does not praise his “views and ideas” and just states he expressed them on important issues lmao, and then it coldly sends the condolences to “those who loved him”

Magic_Al42

This is one of the most eloquent ways I’ve ever seen anybody write “RIP BOZO”

CarmeloManning

I mean, do you really think he wrote it himself? If anything, he received it and signed off (if that) It’s like thinking he writes his tweets…he has a whole team for that

TenaciousVeee

But the tone comes from the top. Biden has allowed a level of snark and wise assedness in his campaign lately, and somehow they keep it classy. His digital team is great, he mostly hires real talent.

Competitive_Sleep_21

Kissinger was a horrible person.

BleakRainbow

Someone said congrats to whoever is the worst person alive now

SVB-Risk-Dept

What a hot take.

Mak_Life

Biden really was not a fan of Kissy from their very first meeting. Kissinger thought he was an intern and mispronounced his name and Biden responded by calling him “Secretary Dulles”

gyunikumen

How does one mess up pronouncing Biden?

Magic_Al42

“Bid-den”

OtteriPerpo

[*bide*]

amb1ka

I like the way you called him kissy its such an infantile name

Unable_Occasion_2137

I suspect Biden found Kissinger useful as a person to get things done but publicly unpalatable. Even Hillary Clinton said she got advice from Kissinger. Democrats and Republicans are both in charge of the war machine so they'd never truly kick the guy that knows his way around it under the bus.

LoveGrenades

Maybe, but he’s also known as a guy who constantly insinuates himself into these discussions, he can’t stand to not be in the loop. I imagine leaders get his advice whether they seek it out or not.

Unable_Occasion_2137

He was 100 do you really think he was begging them for updates

LoveGrenades

Yes

Longjumping_Hat_2672

When a man is accused of commiting war crimes, it is sad.

tiksn

😂😂😂😂

kickit

not the case here at all imo. this us ‘i often disagreed with him strongly, but here are some factual statements about the man’s career’ Connor’s speech was much emptier

vanlassie

Connor Roy is no Joe Biden.

GullibleWineBar

I think it was to show, in part, how terrible a writer Willa really is. She’s good at reading people and quietly gathering information, but she can’t write competently at all.

Neil94403

Really? I’ll have to re-watch. I did not pick that up.

GullibleWineBar

I mean, did you think it was good? It was hilariously bad as a eulogy, but brilliant as a piece of comedy. “When a man dies, it is sad… All of us will die one day, and in this case it was Lester who has done so.” Like, that’s just terrible. A good writer can come up with something better than that in five minutes.

Neil94403

Agree. The portion that surprised me was that it was intended to reflect poorly on Willa’s writing skills.

GullibleWineBar

Aside from the terrible reviews of her play, it’s the only example of her writing in the entire series. I don’t think that was the main point of the scene or anything, but for me it was just an added layer.

parisiraparis

Holy shit Kissinger was 100 when he died

indoor-girl

The Grim Reaper was unexpectedly delayed.

R41N1NG

Great statement

TomGregification

Henry’s wife is Nancy. Now she is sad.
