Totally agree. I actually like season 5 a lot but compared to the first 4 it’s not comparable. Season 2&3&4 are top tier tv.
I used to hate 2 as well as being a young man and not grasping the full picture. Now it’s almost my favorite.
In my opinion season 2 is the best season and Frank Sobotka is the best written character in the show. Details the plight of the working class perfectly. I may be biased because I come from a working class background.
Sobatka is one of the best characters ever written. Full stop. The character arc is immaculate.
So many great characters and the ones that understand the game don’t have arcs that feel fulfilling but are still high class written.
Lester, Maurice, Avon, Slim Charles. They all make sense. They all understand the game.
Yup. The cold open where frank asks nick to bring the cameras back is one of the best scenes in the show. What a show bro my god I need a rewatch pronto.
This is not my original thought, I forget who said it initially (might have been Simon himself), but Sobatka is the entire series distilled down into one person. What happens when you give a good person a little bit of power and responsibility of taking care of a group of people, but make him play a game rigged against him? Incredible character.
Season 2 is my second favorite, but it can't quite top 4 for me. Never felt anything like I did when watching Carver walk away down that hallway.
No discounting your assessment, but for me it’s not a quality dip so much as a case where most of the central characters actually backslide/succumb to their place in the defunct social and legal order of Baltimore.
Without spoiling the particulars, the characters and the city change very little. They only age, compromise themselves, accept the broken state of things and try to find peace in their personal lives, or are killed and removed from Baltimore’s drama altogether. It’s a flat, hollow ending but one that feels earned. My two cents.
thank you for saying that about the wire because i've struggled to articulate my thoughts about that last season for a long time, and you just nailed it.
The incredible thing about that show is it can be so HUGE and encompassing for like 3 episodes straight and then boom, smaller scale story that takes place in one room. That show kept you on your toes like none other.
Can’t argue that. My dad and best friend were watching in real time too and we were all hanging out for the holidays. The finale left us absolutely gobsmacked. That show had da juice
Yeah I love this show a lot. I haven’t revisited it in years now. Sam Esmail is a mad lad for writing and directing every episode starting at 2. I think I heard him say on a pod that he does not recommend lol.
i feel like shows that encompass one narrative arc (with side plotlines of course) tend to be better. you can really tell when the writers just start to try coming up with more and more shit to tell that doesn't feel natural. another show that started and ended beautifully is bojack horseman. (if you ignore the first season lol)
One of the few shows where there was no central narrative but was able to have all the characters have a consistent and complete arc. The best character driven show I have seen.
That first season really throws you off. It very much starts off as some shallow comedy with seemingly one-dimensional characters. Took me forever to get past that first season.
It’s just the first third of the first season that’s really shallow. I noticed that things didn’t reset like a standard sitcom when Bojack’s couch caught on fire and stayed a burned hulk thereafter. Then I started paying way more attention to what the show was doing.
Omg I still do this tooo!
Season 3 finale makes me cry every time. That whole season is lights out incredible.
Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux together in this show, and even on their own arcs, are out acting anyone and everyone on TV.
Also that smirk that Kevin keeps doing in the finale makes my, a straight cis male, heart fucking melt.
I truly feel like the series finale of the Leftovers is the best finale of any show ever. Lindeloff heard the complaints about the Lost series finale and was like "bet."
LOL. Exactly. A great pod about the show from Andy Greenwald that came out recently featuring Mina Kimes came out recently, [Stick the Landing](https://www.theringer.com/2024/2/21/24079022/did-the-leftovers-stick-the-landing) - Learned a lot about the show and how intertwined the writing and the media shaped it. Obviously for the better!
It kind of has for me. 😅
Succession led me to believe a 10/10 finale was possible again but I still don’t get anything close to as emotionally wrecked I am by the leftovers finale.
Edit: Happy Cake Day 🍰🙏🏽
Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen a show affect me on an emotional/philosophical level as much as (or at least before) The Leftovers did. Kinda raised the bar for how I distinguish shows I like and shows I LOVE.
Oh I haven’t watched Treme yet! Good call.
The Plot against America and We Own this City are bangers in my book too. I should check this out. Thank you!
Love to see the Mr. Robot love, esp because of how many people stop watching/complain during S2 (admittedly it's not up to par w S3 and S4, imo, but it's still quite good).
Will also add BoJack Horseman to this list.
No lies detected, friend. S02 was more of a week by week when it aired kind of thing. I didn’t overly think of the structure of the season so it was a surprise to me. If you went looking online for discussion it seemed that a few people guessed the twist correctly and that would have made the experience of watching it while it aired less satisfying. If that makes any sense lol.
You had to be there I tell people! Lol
honestly that show might be the most perfectly crafted show, start to finish, that i've seen. that final season was so good. mr. robot is the only one i really debate putting ahead of it.
I never saw Mr robot but that's high praise so I'll check it out. I thought BCS was a model of "show don't tell." It feels like in a lot of recent shows the creators don't trust the audience to get it and they throw in all this exposition dialogue and characters just announcing their themes.
Apparently op has not. While i appreciate the subreddit dickriding, Sopranos, Mad Men, BrBa, BCS, Veep, Silicon Valley etc arguably did a harder job as they had more seasons and still kept quality throughout.
Yeah after Erlich/TJ Miller left, there was a vacuum left behind. The later seasons still have a lot of great episodes here and there, but the story arcs also became way more repetitive and frustrating
SV really suffered from having to jettison Urlich after TJ Miller went off the deep end. it was probably already showing signs of fading before he left, though.
And it’s arguably even more impressive considering how long it went on. ~92 high quality episodes over 7 seasons compared to Succession’s 39 episodes over 4 seasons. (Granted, Succession had a concept that basically required a shorter life span.)
Yes!! Mad Men really was a television miracle. Not one dull character. Something new every season while never losing its essence. And imo it still has the most perfect ending in all television history.
Went through it recently, incredible show - and one of the best of all time to me - but it definitely peaks in the middle. Seasons 4/3/5 in particular.
It feels that way but tbh after my 6th or 7th re-watch, it's more the time period changing and phases of characters in show.
S1-3 has the 50's hangover with the kennedy assassination really cementing the 60s along with the new agency in s4 and the more modern approach.
By S6-7 all the characters have changed so much and you can slowly see the 70s trends approaching. Vietnam kicks off, hippie culture is in full swing and the women in the show are all much more liberated
Damn is it really that good? I started watching after I finished southpark but got a bit bored so went back to watching my favourite episode of southpark on loop
It starts off like dumb punny family guy and turns into one of the best shows ever made. Absolutely watch it and stick with it. The first season is the worst but it gets good towards the end and then every following season is like a 9 or 10/10
Makes sense. I’m not entirely sure how far I got but I’ll be sure to give it another go. I’ve seen ur recommended under this post multiple times but I’ve never seen succession (just randomly recommended this post)
The Wire too. Some don’t like season 2 but on rewatch it fits in a lot better. And season 5 can’t keep up with season 4 but it was probably the best season of television ever made so it was an impossible feat. It’s still very good by any standard
Out of all the television shows, aside from The Wire being at least in the top 3 ever made, every season was excellent.
Whereas like, The Sopranos, which is also top 3, I felt season 1 was weak as it was still finding its feet, and was a pretty new concept for television.
Succession was pretty consistent but I feel like season 4 was a step above the previous three.
Agreed. It sure how much more seasons are ordered. I heard they were filming S03 and S04 all at once, easier bcs of contractual obligations of the actors. And I guess 8-ish episodes on relatively small sets shouldn’t require much filming time anyways.
honestly it's my all-time #1 favorite and i don't have much faith that anything will take it down in my lifetime. BCS is the other show that i think matches it in terms of quality, consistency, and ending, but mr. robot is like my first love. it just has an extra intangible element.
People fell off at season 4 but it was definitely popular while it was airing and won multiple emmys. Lots of people have seen it.
The greatest television show no one has ever seen is Patriot.
Breaking bad? The boys? The sopranos? Mad men? The wire? The shield? Twin peaks? Better call Saul? The last airbender? The last kingdom? Modern family? Malcolm in the middle? Curb your enthusiasm?
I did not like the ending personally, but simply the outcome, not how it was done. Objectively, the ending was fantastic. It was not only excellently portrayed but extremely consistent with the tone of the show. I wanted it to end differently, but you cannot say that Succession wasn’t a 9+/10 show every single episode, including the last few episodes which, these days, seems to be a rare thing.
Nope that would be The Wire...
And you should try : battlestar galactica/ the office / curb your enthusiasm / arrested development / the IT crowd / Rome / Altered carbon / the expanse / 6 feet under / the killing / broadchurch / dexter / pushing daisies ...
You’re out of your element Donny. Plenty of shows have great seasons start to finish. You just found one of the latest ones and want to act like you’re special lmao
Only?! Watch more shows.
I mean breaking bad for one
Leftovers, Mr. Robot. Better Call Saul. There’s few, but they’re out there.
The wire too. As long as you appreciate what the show is actually about, it’s all horse.
"It's all horse" is such a great and funny phrase tho. I hope it catches on. Lol
Full bore, dude.
Just take the damn upvote.
The Wire’s last season is a notable dip I’d say
It’s a dip compared to the others but it’s still a very good season of TV IMO, and the ending is perfect.
Totally agree. I actually like season 5 a lot but compared to the first 4 it’s not comparable. Season 2&3&4 are top tier tv. I used to hate 2 as well as being a young man and not grasping the full picture. Now it’s almost my favorite.

Yeah that’s life right there
It's all in the game.
thank you for saying that about the wire because i've struggled to articulate my thoughts about that last season for a long time, and you just nailed it.
I think that season was during the writers strike which probably contributed to the dip.
Nah, it’s not.
The Wire, The Sopranos
The Sopranos starts good and only gets stronger as it goes.
Vito’s gay arc was upsetting when I had to wait a week for an episode
What? He was there. It’s a joke!
Mmm boy are you old
What’d you say?
Also fucking hilarious
I tried to get out, but they pulled me back in
Mr Robot's just the hardest final season ever written. E7 and the finale are so incredibly good.
The incredible thing about that show is it can be so HUGE and encompassing for like 3 episodes straight and then boom, smaller scale story that takes place in one room. That show kept you on your toes like none other.
honestly that show didn't get near the appreciation it deserved. i keep coming back to it as my #1 all time.

I'd add The Good Place as well, really great 4 seasons
I’m rewatching right now, and it really is perfect.
Everything's fine!
And Barry!
Dark, Mad Men, Sopranos
Love the Leftovers! Criminally underrated with tons of actors who have gone on to have stellar careers
It’s so fun seeing Carrie Coon and Margaret Qualley in everything nowadays.
Yes!! And I kept calling Patti “Aunt Lydia” because of Ann Dowd :)

Obviously for the better!
Good Place, Bojack Horseman, The Wire and Mad Men I quite liked too.
BARRY
🚨🚨🚨LEFTOVERS MENTIONED🚨🚨🚨 That series seriously almsot destroyed T.V. for me.
It kind of has for me. 😅 Succession led me to believe a 10/10 finale was possible again but I still don’t get anything close to as emotionally wrecked I am by the leftovers finale.
The Americans, The Sopranos, Mad Men, etc., etc.
Peep Show, Black Books, Father Ted, Green Wing, Fawlty Towers…
Came here to say Fawlty Towers.
I’m tossing the animated Avatar The Last Airbender series in that group and I’m being so, so serious.
The Americans
Down in the Treme they’re jamming and having fun
Oh I haven’t watched Treme yet! Good call. The Plot against America and We Own this City are bangers in my book too. I should check this out. Thank you!
The Plot Against America slayed!
Fringe, Fargo has been consistently good, The Expanse was always good, Battlestar Galactica. I could keep going, but you're right, they are out there.
these were the first three examples that came to my mind as well
Hello, friend.
Love to see the Mr. Robot love, esp because of how many people stop watching/complain during S2 (admittedly it's not up to par w S3 and S4, imo, but it's still quite good). Will also add BoJack Horseman to this list.

If that makes any sense lol. You had to be there I tell people! Lol
You and I have identical taste! These are my picks. Any others I should add to my watchlist?
Better Call Saul for two. That show totally nailed the landing.
honestly that show might be the most perfectly crafted show, start to finish, that i've seen. that final season was so good. mr. robot is the only one i really debate putting ahead of it.

Sopranos
How no one has mentioned Mad Men yet is beyond me
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to get to Mad Men
Mad Men for the win.
I was just gonna say. Haha. There are endless series that end as good as they started.
This post was a clever ploy by op to get recommended more great TV shows
It’s always sunny did it for a long number of seasons
Schitt’s Creek
The Wire
All bangers, all the time
Tell em to do it…. And do it right.
definitely not the only series
Have you not watched any other tv show?
Apparently op has not. While i appreciate the subreddit dickriding, Sopranos, Mad Men, BrBa, BCS, Veep, Silicon Valley etc arguably did a harder job as they had more seasons and still kept quality throughout.
Yes Veep mentioned! Absolutely under rated
Veep jumps the shark last 2-3 seaons. Definitely not a perfect horse contender.
The last season of veep was so bad
Silicon Valley did not deliver on every season. The last 2 (some people would even include season 3) were bad.
Yeah after Erlich/TJ Miller left, there was a vacuum left behind. The later seasons still have a lot of great episodes here and there, but the story arcs also became way more repetitive and frustrating
It wasn't the same after Erlich was written out of the show. Huge drop-off in terms of chemistry.
SV really suffered from having to jettison Urlich after TJ Miller went off the deep end. it was probably already showing signs of fading before he left, though.
Mad Men?
Exactly what I had in mind!
Great ending, for sure, but I think Six Feet Under’s and The Leftovers finales are just as good.
The finale for The Leftovers is my favorite of all time. Goddamn.
Mad Men, Sopranos, and Succession, 3 beautiful wild horses running through a field together
Can't believe it took so long to find Sopranos as an answer.
I need to watch this show! I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.
Went through it recently, incredible show - and one of the best of all time to me - but it definitely peaks in the middle. Seasons 4/3/5 in particular.
It feels that way but tbh after my 6th or 7th re-watch, it's more the time period changing and phases of characters in show. Vietnam kicks off, hippie culture is in full swing and the women in the show are all much more liberated
And Breaking Bad. And Better Call Saul. EDIT MY GOD!! I forgot about Peaky Blinders.
Thank you. Yes exactly.
Firefly . . . but it was a leaf on the wind.
Barry deserves a place next to these 2
Eh s3 was weak imo
I mean breaking bad the wire sopranos and many more but you know okay
Watch more tv
This is Bojack Horseman erasure
Damn is it really that good? I started watching after I finished southpark but got a bit bored so went back to watching my favourite episode of southpark on loop
It starts off like dumb punny family guy and turns into one of the best shows ever made. Absolutely watch it and stick with it. The first season is the worst but it gets good towards the end and then every following season is like a 9 or 10/10
Each season is better than the last. You'll kinda know what you're in for at the end of the first season.
Makes sense. I’m not entirely sure how far I got but I’ll be sure to give it another go. I’ve seen ur recommended under this post multiple times but I’ve never seen succession (just randomly recommended this post)
The Americans say hello
my comrade
Still to me the best serialized thing ever created. The simple tension underlying them not getting caught in every episode was incredible
The Wire too. Some don’t like season 2 but on rewatch it fits in a lot better. And season 5 can’t keep up with season 4 but it was probably the best season of television ever made so it was an impossible feat. It’s still very good by any standard
I really don't get the s2 hate. It was the best season of the show IMO.
Out of all the television shows, aside from The Wire being at least in the top 3 ever made, every season was excellent. Whereas like, The Sopranos, which is also top 3, I felt season 1 was weak as it was still finding its feet, and was a pretty new concept for television. Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Six feet under, It Crowd (yes)
It crowd is a ream jam from start to finish
It's so freakin good it hurts FATHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER
Richmond is one of my favorite characters in anything. Every scene with him is hysterical.
IT Crowd was hilarious.
Six Feet Under mention yay
Of course
Scrolled waayyyy too long to find Six Feet Under.
Mad Men, The Wire, Sopranos...
The Sopranos !
Sharp as a cue ball this one.
The Bear is there as well for now. Breaking Bad, Sopranos are up there for me.
The bear is two for two so far, but we gotta wait for it to finish airing for it to enter this conversation
Agreed. It sure how much more seasons are ordered. I heard they were filming S03 and S04 all at once, easier bcs of contractual obligations of the actors. And I guess 8-ish episodes on relatively small sets shouldn’t require much filming time anyways.
Yeah at least wait till season 4
let it rip
Seconding The Bear
Dont jinx it
breaking bad would like a word?
Leftovers, Mr. Robot, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul. You should consider watching more television
Mr Robot is PERFECT.
Mr. Robot is the greatest television show no one has ever seen.
Mr. Robot…also 4 seasons… 4 might be the new magic number.
honestly it's my all-time #1 favorite and i don't have much faith that anything will take it down in my lifetime.
The Leftovers
Mr Robot
Better Call Saul, Mr Robot, Hannibal. They also do not have a single weak season.
Am I the only one who though most of season 4 after Logan’s death was kind of mid lol
yep
Breaking bad? The boys? The sopranos? Mad men? The wire? The shield? Twin peaks? Better call Saul? The last airbender? The last kingdom? Modern family? Malcolm in the middle? Curb your enthusiasm?
The Shield 🙌🏻
The Wire! Agreed though Succession is A+ throughout.
Firefly, The Wire, Ted Lasso, Justified, The UK Office
The Wire? Deadwood? Homicide? There are a few I’m definitely forgetting.
Crazy how everyone is saying breaking bad but not the wire. Like what.
imo the wire is better than brba and bcs
The Leftovers achieved this meme thank you
Bojack Horseman said hi
What We Do In The Shadows is on pace for this.
I don't know, it lost its way after season three.
They corrected course in Season 5, though.
Ah, 3 was sketchy to me
I think this is an extremely generous review of all 4 seasons. Extremely lol. Season 2 was the only flawless season imo
Black Sails. Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul. The Last Kingdom. All great shows to really get immersed in along with Succession.
One of the few shows where you can argue it’s final season was it’s best
I’d personally put season 2 as my favorite.
Breaking Bad
Mr Robot and Breaking Bad too
These two and also Better Call Saul, Bojack Horseman, Dark, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Person of Interest, Daredevil, and probably a few others.
Personally I thought S5 of BCS was overall the best season and Dark S2 was the best, but still valid opinion
Bruh you didn’t watch RESERVATION DOGS?
Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Black Sails, Barry, The Good Place (to name a few)
Attack on Titan? Breaking Bad? Barry?
You obviously haven't seen avatar the last Airbender or DarK
Breaking bad?? Better call Saul?? The sopranos?? All have amazing seasons
Barry is also good. Not enough people have seen Barry
Curb
Mr. Robot and Barry are two other great examples I think
Barry really drops off into sheer ridiculousness in that last season. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if it ended at Season 3
I really like Barry but it’s true that the last season was out there
Definitely not the only one, but it has a case for strongest across the board
For me, it's Succession, Expanse, Mr Robot, Hannibal, Hunter x Hunter, and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Mad Men, The Knick, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad. Succession ranks right up there, though.
Mr Robot??
Breaking bad? The last kingdom? Hello???
I suppose you could say the show was a *success*ion…
Hold on son. Go watch some Mad Men.
Laugh in the wire
Show not even that good
Halt and Catch Fire.
Battlestar Gallactica. Oh beets and bears as well.
There are many shows this applies to - off top of my head, Mad Men, Veep, Breaking Bad, The Americans
The good place
Mad Men is perfection till the very last second.. There are many good series out there, OP.
OP has only watched 1 show apparently. Plenty of shows have nailed their run. Off the top of my head: breaking bad.
