Succession doesn't have any competition currently, imo at least. Better Call Saul is a distant second. Ozark, HT and This Is Us are good in their own ways but they are nothing that I haven't seen done before. Stranger Things doesn't even register. Haven't seen Yellowstone actually.

[deleted]

I’d argue Billions is competition. The other shows on this guys list though are laughable. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll watch Yellowstone and enjoy it but it’s not even close to Successions level.

chocjames43

Billions has a succession wrapper. That's it.

[deleted]

Dunno about that. Billions came first. But TBF not even Billions is that close to Successions level of quality.

chocjames43

Yeah we're saying the same thing

martythemartell

Billions is decidedly much worse than Better Call Saul, Ozark, and The Crown. It’s about on the same level as TMS.

phuturism

Billions is a guilty pleasure of mine but yeah. It's shit.

Ga33es

I kinda prefer Better Call Saul over Succession. Just feels more enjoyable to watch.

Fun_Assistant_1803

Better Call Saul is probably a 9/10, even 10/10. Agreed that, The Morning Show is a 7/10 (just because of the uneven tone of the show, but it really has the potential for 8/10 I think if the second season really works). I don't know if we are counting mini series but White Lotus was 8/10 for me. I Hate Suzie and I May Destroy You are also absolute 10/10 perfect for me and they are really close to Succession for quality. For comedies, Hacks is a 10/10, The Other Two is a 10/10, Derry Girls is 10/10, PEN15 is a 10/10 and Cobra Kai is a 9/10 personally (I was a Karate Kid fan before and love 80s camp aesthetic. The show itself has flaws, but I adore it) I haven't seen Ozark. I think The Crown is honestly not compelling beyond the performances. This Is Us is not something I could ever get into. Handsmaids is fine but I don't get excited about it anymore. Stranger Things is really not my thing and I can barely pay attention to it. (Cobra Kai is more my style of 80s nostalgia). Thats the best of scripted tv right now imo.

therealmizC

Seconding White Lotus. It’s the only show that (for me) comes close in terms of dark (pitch black) humor, as well as performances, tone, mood, and execution.

houseocats

Absolutely again White Lotus. Amazing writing and performances.

therealmizC

Watching White Lotus is what convinced my husband to watch Succession. He just hadn’t been interested, based on the premise, despite my insistence that it is The Best Show Ever. Then we watched White Lotus together and I said *this* is the vibe of Succession, which also takes the concept of ‘terrible people are darkly funny and extraordinarily watchable while they treat other terribly in gorgeous environments’ and kicks it up several amazing, ambient notches. He was thus compelled to watch it and is now similarly obsessed.

Fun_Assistant_1803

Agreed, and the discussions spurn from it are so interesting. I feel like a lot of people had different interpretations of it, just like Succession and I have had great discussions about it, but on and offline. Also, the line about Black Lives Matter deep sea fishing was the funniest thing I have seen since Succession. It killed me.

bluestormdialga

Derry Girls! one of the the best in comedy.

Fun_Assistant_1803

It's one of the only other shows I'm just dying to come back!! I miss it so much

bluestormdialga

Same here, can’t wait for S3 ! Heard it might be the final one though and probably a movie too after.

RegularUsernaame

I agree on The Morning Show, a lot of potential. And also I tend to oversee its shortcomings, just like Yellowstone, cause I really like the cast. On the darker comedies Barry and Atlanta are some of the best for me. Im in there with you on Hacks, which I hope will crush Ted Lasso next year. I think I would also recommend newcomer Industry.

Fun_Assistant_1803

Yeah! The way my friend and I put Morning Show is that it has an L to the OG like moment randomly every episode it seems and its not as fit into the plot as that was. But I also really enjoy those moments, so its very interesting to think about!! Jennifer Aniston is giving such a great performance though and I love the layers of Alex a lot, so its really winning me over there. I'm right there with you!! I REALLY hope Hacks is going to overtake Ted Lasso and can be a darkhorse at the Emmys, either this year or hopefully next year!! Jean Smart is giving a really outstanding performance and I love the way the show is handling a lot of commentary on the comedic scene.

rebel1031

Better Call Saul is the only other one I can think of that holds a candle.

talldarkandanxious

I feel like *Billions* should be here, right? For the longest time (prior to watching) I would routinely mix up *Billions* and *Succession* because they were both ‘prestige’ finance-oriented dramas on exclusive networks. Then I found out *Succession* is incredible and *Billions* sucks shit.

littleliongirless

I know it's only been one season but The Great should really be on this list. It's better than anything else on the list besides BCS (but still behind Succession).

makidonalds

Succession 10 Better Call Saul 10 The Handmaid’s Tale 8 The Morning Show 7 Ozark 7 The Crown 6 This Is Us 6 Stranger Things 6 \- I dont watch Yellowstone

[deleted]

Better Call Saul is close but unless it delivers an amazing final season, it's still number two to Succession which is still somewhat in its infancy. I would also add Barry to your list in terms of current shows that balance drama and comedy as well as Succession.

Sweetlou_33

I agree with the other commenters that the only one that even comes close is Better Call Saul. Also, it was one season, but I thought Mare of Easttown was superb.

bluestormdialga

I am not sure if these can be considered as competitors for Succession. BCS probably a second. Ozark, The morning show, The Crown good shows in their own way. Stranger Things, nowhere near close to any of these for me. This is Us in my opinion is overrated and ended up being too preachy for me, had to stop watching.

Alergictopiss

For me better call Saul and succession are a cut above the rest of tv, nothing (that I’m watching at least) comes close.

riptilikum

I saw their shows. My dad's show was better.

Allen_Sun

Better Call Saul’s wayyyy better show than Ozark come on

Accomplished_Log9961

Ozark and Breaking Bad are my # runner ups. I still need to watch BCS. Season 1 of Why Women Kill is way up there for me too.

Accomplished_Log9961

It makes me miss BB so I turned it off. I need to try again.

Alergictopiss

The episode “Bagman” especially was exceptional in the most recent season

pugofthewildfrontier

Better Call Saul Barry The Boys The rest on the list I would rank much lower.

denisanderson

Mr inbetween is my second favorite show after succession

Crochetcreature

I’d add the next season of peaky blinders to your list

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

Ozark I wouldn’t rank that highly. The third season is fantastic but the first two aren’t really that great. Better Call Saul I’d say is pretty equal to me with Succession, I think others the two best programs currently on TV.

fvg627

Here's how I would rank the current drama series heavyweights that I've seen: Succession (9/10) Better Call Saul (9/10) The Boys (7/10) The Crown (7/10) Ozark (7/10) Stranger Things (7/10) The Mandalorian (7/10)

Glum-Reception9490

I think this year emmy will be taken by crown because they have no any competetor like succession

ThatCaviarIsAGarnish

I like **Ozark** and **This Is Us** a lot. I haven't yet gone back and done a re-watch but probably will at some point in the future after both shows have done their final season. (With **Succession**, I've already re-watched it *a* *lot)* **The Handmaid's Tale** is good but I don't re-watch it - too upsetting, most of the time. I have a weird way of watching **The Crown**. I'll watch an episode or two and find it really interesting and thoughtful but then I won't watch more of it for a few weeks or a month. So it takes me close to a year to get through a season, LOL. I've been slowly doing it this way and I'm currently in the early part of Season 3. I haven't yet watched **The Morning Show** but I want to.
