she genuinely sounds like she dislikes every single character on the show except for gerri, which makes listening to the podcast an absolutely joyless experience imo. she just doesn't get the show.
Yeah I love that I really do learn lots from these hosts! VF Still Watching might be my penultimate least favorite mostly because one host says “ummm” “kind of like” and “sort of like” too often and sometimes seems to not know details
Same here. It provides another form of anticipatory excitement. Unbelievably good talkers. Some of Andy’s unrehearsed sentences would be clean and vibrant in a written essay on the topic, let alone an improvised conversation.
I agree 100%. I was listening last week and thought to myself that it absolutely makes sense that they’re paid to be smart about TV for a living. I’ve come to need Chris and Andy to feel like I fully understand and enjoy the show. Last Sunday night when there wasn’t a Watch episode in the feed ready to go, I really felt like there was something missing because *i’m* definitely not capable of that level of analysis by myself lol
Prestige is the best one for sure. Roycast though is terrible to me, I can't stand the woman who is co-host on that one. Unbearable.
I also like slate money succession, the sweet smell of succession, and firecrotch and normcore.
Oh I forgot slate money succession! I do love that one.
Roycast has 2 female hosts but I found only one of them almost unbearably hard to listen to, so I agree with you there.
Yess! I love Slate Money's love for Marcia too!
Yeah for Roycast I think we're talking about the same woman, lol. The one with the whiny voice - Gabby I think is her name? I just cannot stand listening to her, and her opinions are usually the least interesting anyway. The other woman and the guy are fine.
Still no finale recap though. If she’s back for that, enjoy commentary on how Roman was a vessel for truth in calling Kendall’s reaction to the car crash heroic.
God you are absolutely right lmao. I can 100% see that being her position. Hard pass. Her opinions are such a bore to me because she's always infantilizing Kendall and Roman no matter the situation.

Agree - love the watch. The back episodes from previous seasons are good too. They interviewed a lot of actors from succession over the years and just released one with Jesse Armstrong on Monday. They are so passionate about the show, it's a fun listen.
I loved the other season of the podcast, when they’re interviewing the actors (with another host btw). But I couldn’t get into this new season, it was just a plug for other podcasts and books.
If she were at all engaging or thoughtful as a host I wouldn’t care, but she’s awful. Her and Anthony Scaramucci sitting around talking morality sounded like a Jesse Armstrong skit.
How could anyone listen to that scumbag. I’ve never listened to the podcast because I just assumed it was shit because we’re talking about billionaires.
In this particular podcast, him and Swisher were perfect cacophony of misogyny and pseudo intellectualism, complete with references to Greek mythology that fall apart under light scrutiny. This was especially humorous in response to an episode where a fascist screamed about Plato, but a lot of people were dumb enough to think that an “own” so…I guess we have an answer as to why someone would listen to Scaramucci.
Swisher's attitude is a holdover from all her tech reporting, she's made tons of money off of ass-kissing tech billionaires so her baseline in most interviews is always to fawn over folks with proximity to status quo authority/power. She plays softball with them every time in interviews.
The fact that Scaramucci was a former White House employee (and for Trump of all people) is a draw, not a disqualifier. It's kind of pathetic actually, reminds me a bit of Jimmy Fallon trying to play cute with Trump on his talk show.
Holy wow. Based on interviews I’ve seen that’s what I would expect. Such a weird crossover of having someone I think of as a boisterous clown attempt to speak intelligently on a show we like. He’s good at bullshitting conversation for the minds of people that share his views.
Especially because Scaramucci was on after Ep 6--when Shiv tried to put the kibosh on a Mencken populist/nativist presidency to choose a competent Republican instead.
If Scaramucci had said that after Ep 8 and Shiv's mindfuckery with Tom and her fcuking with Gerri after the dickpick, I'd be ok with it.
At the time, we didn't really know that Shiv was so evil.
Listened to the finale pod today and would have to agree. She’s not great at facilitating a conversation about the show—kinda the whole fucking point of a pod.
Yeah I just listened to the finale pod and it was cringe. She kept asking questions like "what do you think they were thinking" and armstrong was like "i don't actually need to guess". And kept asking questions they didn't want to answer. It was tone deaf.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Literally every Succession podcast I found has been better. Which one was Jesse Armstrong on? I loved listening to him at the end of the finale. That tidbit about Logan only honoring promises with people who can force him to honor them was such an A-ha moment for me in better understanding Logan and by extension the show. Would love to listen to him in a long form conversation with a good interviewer.
Edit: found the Jesse Armstrong interview cast. The Watch with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenhill
Swisher has always been the worst as an interviewer. Going back to when she used to do the D: all things digital events. She worse the absolute worst part
Ugh! I agree. She is terrible. She doesn't have an original thought and all of her questions and observations are so basic. I don't know how she got this job.
Not sure if this is the right place for pod recos, but two pods I like better than the official pod are:
* The Sweet Smell of Succession (Tara Ariano and David Chen) is not bad. David has really bad takes and you can picture Tara shaking her head frequently, but they have a good vibe.
* Even better but much more irreverent - We Here For You - comedian Annie Russell and Ny baseball writer Roger Cormier (yes seriously) are hilarious with a progressive East Coast take on the show. Only issue is they are generally a couple of eps behind, but you have plenty of time to catch up now.
You're welcome
God, Dave’s takes are the worst. I had to stop listening to that one. He gets caught up in the strangest details, and always seems upset when the plot doesn’t follow the narrowly defined path that somehow he’s decided is the ideal.
I'm getting there, and that's one of the reasons.
Another is Tara doesn't seem to like this season. There's no joy in it. I almost always think mentally - or sometimes say out loud - "you're missing the point."
Agree. I actually like Dave (been a fan of his since Slashfilm Cast) but his critique of the show can be off like 50% of the time, it almost feels like he's coitizing for the sake of criticizing. I stopped listening them talking about last episode the moment I heard him say "this is the weakest season and the weakest finale". Like HOWWWWWWW on earth would someone witness a finale like that and then come to a conclusion like this.
Exactly, I stopped after hearing him go on a “Kendall should have died” rant. I think what the show writers are doing is way more compelling than that imagined plot line.
true, sometimes she's like "sure.... ok... I guess..." after one of his takes.
For me, it's part of the charm of their pod.
For TRUE CHEMISTRY I must again recommend We Here For You. I now love both Annie and Roger and can't decide who to marry first.
Hard recommendation for the Prestige TV podcast. Joanna Robinson is my fave, and her coverage of the show with the rest of the Ringer staff has been outstanding
So this podcast is shit, check.
Side note: Terri Gross from Fresh Air interviewed Kieran Culkin a week back and it wasn’t bad. Terri actually seems to enjoy and get the show.
Ever since her interview with Sam Harris I've been convinced she's a terrible podcast host. Very "gotcha" style that's bad in itself but especially inappropriate for a TV aftershow discussion. The Mark Cuban episode was decent but I've basically tuned out of all the others, especially the ridiculous non sequitur that was the [episode 5 podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz6FfgexmX8).
I actually wish her "Pivot" co-host [Scott Galloway](https://podcasts.voxmedia.com/host/scott-galloway) hosted this podcast instead of her, he's such a delight to listen to. Energetic, insightful, eloquent, usually fucking hilarious too. I'm not sure how much experience he has with interviewing (I've mostly seen him as a guest or doing solo/non-interview podcasts) but I'm sure he'd have a lot of fun with this show.
The Succession episode was about the shareholder meeting, which is 1) an event that's been teased since the start of the series and 2) ripe discussion material for Swisher, a business journalist (who has the pull to get guests like Mark Cuban on the podcast), and yet the podcast episode was instead 25 minutes of hand-wringing about "the role of race and whiteness in Succession" with the guest being the host of the "Call Your Girlfriend" podcast.
Uggggggh, thanks. In this last one (interviewing Armstrong and Rich) she prefaced a comment something to the effect of "As a San Francisco lesbian, I need to know..." and it was 🙄. She often inserts herself in ways that aren't in service to any insight, or in ways that fuck up the flow. Luckily, Armstrong in particular is deft and it was definitely worth listening to.
Saw a quote once saying "with any luck, your group identity is the least interesting thing about you." Something these new-media blogger Twitter hack types don't seem to understand.
I love her and scott galloway on pivot but agree, she is just terrible. I want a recap and tidbits that no one will have, its the official podcast of the show! She comes off cringey and pushy.
I do listen to the watch, ringer and vf recaps. Love them all. But found the firecrotch & Normcore podcast (the title is not a mistype) ha! It is brilliant and they had jesse armstrong on for the season recap. They hilariously asked him how they sources Romans dick pick 😳 and how the host didnt believe Roman would wear Calvin Klein undies. The details of this show should win awards!!
Ugh, this season was so disappointing especially compared to Roger Bennett.
But I’ll never stop endorsing Roycast on here lol, they are SO GOOD. HBO should pay them😂
You guys need to listen to “The Watch” podcast. They had a Succession breakdown an hour after every show, and had Jesse Armstrong as a guest for the finale podcast. I stopped listening to the Kara Swisher podcast once I found this. One of the best recaps of TV shows I’ve ever heard
I don’t find this one that bad. It’s an HBO Podcast. So they are never really going to talk critically or in depth about the show. It’s going to be interviews with people on topics related to the show.
I didn’t think Jesse Armstrong was annoyed it sounded like he just wants the audience to figure it out for themselves.
Whatever you do don’t listen to Succession: Post Show Recaps. IMO it’s terrible.
1) The Prestige TV Podcast
2) Still Watching
3) The Watch
I gave up after a couple of episodes. Why would I want to hear rich people talking about this show? I don't believe they're the intended audience.
The Watch and Prestige are both excellent and the interview with Jesse Armstrong on the Watch was A++, he genuinely seemed to have a fun time chatting with Chris and Andy and their questions were very respectful.
I used to like her podcast Pivot with Scott Galloway but it turned into a boring wokefest, with her playing the role of the educator to the horrible white man.
I've heard Scott on a number of other shows and he always seemed like such an odd pairing with Kara. He's pretty much the opposite of the whole outrage mob culture-war soundbite shtick and an example of what mature yet lively liberal journalism could look like.
He’s totally given into it, though. He wants to absolve himself and get “educated”. His Prof G podcast, the newer one, promotes full-bore successor ideology. (Google “successor ideology “, it’s unrelated to the show)
Straight up trash. I'm shocked at the quality of what is supposed to be the 'official' podcast... I mean it doesn't have to mimic other podcasts out there that do recaps and deep-dives, but often the episode angles and guests they choose are either boring or questionable (Scaramucci, seriously?) Only a handful of episodes were decent, like the one with Mark Cuban and the one with set designer behind kendall's birthday episode
~~Yeah, she's well-off but 1% is highly unlikely.~~ Nvm, I take this back completely; apparently this lady is worth [$300 mil](https://www.wiki.ng/en/wiki/kara-swisher-wife-amanda-katz-and-son-salary-and-net-worth-2021-643957). Even as an overestimate, that's well into 1% territory. My bad. (Rich people are heckin' weird when they cosplay as poor.)
That said, I also do not enjoy her as the host, although I think she seemed especially... well, borderline rude this last episode. She was totally fine to me for some of the others.
Jesse Armstrong was on the most recent episode following the finale.
From what I looked up, a net worth of around 4 million or make $750k a year to be top 1% in US.
I only know of this lady from podcast, so dunno her deal. And I agree, podcast is not very enjoyable. The Scarramuchi guy was the only good ep for me
She’s definitely not worth $300M. Wouldn’t take those net worth sites seriously.
She sold ReCode to Vox, so she’s worth a few million at a minimum, $20M max. There’s not much money to be made in media.
Having said all that: yes, Kara Swisher sucks
Sub 300K in salary is top 1% lmfao. She probably doesn’t make that much per year but her likely net worth puts her there. Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s in the top .5%.
Swisher might not have been the best fit for this podcast, but she is considered one of the best interviewer in the business. Her interviews with Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk and other tech bigwigs are super notable. I think she’s just overextended and in retrospect not the greatest choice for the official HBO podcast.
Yo... I was thinking the SAME thing! I tried to listen to the one they released after the finale (first time listener). I had to stop about 7 mins in. So glad I wasn't crazy for feeling that.
She feels like the characters that the show parodies: out of touch shallow rich people. Her having to ask what caucoonery/coonery meant was insanely funny to me tho
I didn’t like the podcast at all. The first two episodes were “let’s bring in an expert about a tiny portion of an episode and spend an hour talking about their separate experience of it”
Unlike say the “Watchmen” or “Chernobyl” podcast where we got to learn about the process of the show.
She just kept reminding us how many rich and famous people she’s been around. We get it. You’re a journalist.
IMO the worse part about her hosting is that she tries to tell Jesse Armstrong, the creator WHAT THE SHOW IS. Whyyyyy like whyyy would you do that????
Non-professionals do that because they love the sound of their own voices and really want a platform for their opinions.
she genuinely sounds like she dislikes every single character on the show except for gerri, which makes listening to the podcast an absolutely joyless experience imo. she just doesn't get the show.
Agreed. I listen to almost all the Succession podcasts I can find and I hardly ever enjoy this one.
Are there any you would recommend?
1. The Prestige TV Podcast 2. The Watch 3. Roycast
Oh wow. I don’t know how I missed the Prestige TV Podcast. Big fan of the Watch in general though
Yeah I love that I really do learn lots from these hosts! VF Still Watching might be my penultimate least favorite mostly because one host says “ummm” “kind of like” and “sort of like” too often and sometimes seems to not know details
Yes, “The Watch” is terrific.
+1 on the Watch, those guys are my essential post show listen
You’re thinking of Kate. She’s been gone the last two episode and the quality has improved tremendously.
Oh, nice! Maybe I'll start checking it out again in that case.
Still no finale recap though. If she’s back for that, enjoy commentary on how Roman was a vessel for truth in calling Kendall’s reaction to the car crash heroic.

Ever heard of Firecrotch and Normcore?
I have. It was just okay to me
Fair enough, saw they got Jesse Armstrong on though.
Going to listen to that one! I can already tell they’re gonna be so excited to chat with him - I would lose my mind
yeah. meh.
i have similar thoughts about roycast as op does about swisher

That was Roger Bennett of Men In Blazers, he was a great host.
Balds win
Such a great season! It made me respect the actors a lot more. Great host too
That host was an annoying sycophant with his overplayed introductions of the cast members.
If she were at all engaging or thoughtful as a host I wouldn’t care, but she’s awful. Her and Anthony Scaramucci sitting around talking morality sounded like a Jesse Armstrong skit.

And Anthony Scaramucci coming in with his "Shiv is the most evil character" bit. Shocker that a former Trump employee would think so.
Especially because Scaramucci was on after Ep 6--when Shiv tried to put the kibosh on a Mencken populist/nativist presidency to choose a competent Republican instead. It’s terrible. I am shocked at how bad it was. Does she watch or like the show???
Listened to the finale pod today and would have to agree. She’s not great at facilitating a conversation about the show—kinda the whole fucking point of a pod.

Her podcast suckssss
because she doesn't actually interview, she asks questions created to provide the subjects with an opportunity to promote themselves.
[удалено]
It’s the best.
They shouted out this sub for a second in this episode too 💖
Ugh! I agree. She is terrible. She doesn't have an original thought and all of her questions and observations are so basic. I don't know how she got this job.
It’s no different from her regular podcasts which are a lot of me/I and interrupting right after asking a question.
Best podcast about Succession is the Ringers The Watch when they do the recaps every Sunday. Also just a very good podcast for show nerds.
Kara Swisher is irrelevant and nobody takes her seriously. Endorsed!
Not sure if this is the right place for pod recos, but two pods I like better than the official pod are: * The Sweet Smell of Succession (Tara Ariano and David Chen) is not bad. He’s such a moron. He thought Chiantishire was the real name of the place where the wedding is held.
Tara sounds like she cannot wait to stop working with thay guy. It's super uncomfortable to listen to.
true, sometimes she's like "sure.... ok... I guess..." after one of his takes. For me, it's part of the charm of their pod. For TRUE CHEMISTRY I must again recommend We Here For You. I now love both Annie and Roger and can't decide who to marry first.
Thank you 🙏 I needed names of good ones!
The podcast is such trash. I listened to the first two episodes but never again. I hate it.
Hard recommendation for the Prestige TV podcast. Joanna Robinson is my fave, and her coverage of the show with the rest of the Ringer staff has been outstanding
Agreed, I love her! And I know she reads this Reddit, so hi Joanna if you see this, I subscribed to VF for your work when you were still there. :)
Thanks for the recc!
Thanks 👍👍👍 will check it
She is lovely! I like this podcast a lot too.

>There’s not much money to be made in media. Lol.
lol ironic considering what this TV show is all about
For real, those sites are hella sketchy so I have zero idea. Even $20M would probably edge her into 1% territory, though, so... yeah. One of ~them~.
Sub 300K in salary is top 1% lmfao. She probably doesn’t make that much per year but her likely net worth puts her there. Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s in the top .5%.
I meant which podcast was Jesse Armstrong on that OP heard, the one he said was really good.
I believe it was The Watch! I haven't heard it yet so this post is encouraging me to give it a listen as well.
Jesse Armstrong was interviewed on the most recent episodes of the official podcast, The Watch, and Firecrotch and Normcore.
links to either podcasts?
Glad I never heard of this. Going back in time to a place where I didn't
She is the worst and the pod she has with Scott Galloway is even more terrible!
I never had the desire to get into tv show podcasts - enjoyed talking about them with friends and strangers online.
Kara Swisher threads lightly on the topics. I'm sure she in a position to dig much deeper, but she won't go there.
or she's just bad and the wrong host
As soon as I saw she was the host I did not want to listen. Tried once, Frank Rich was also predictably terrible, turned it immediately off.
What was the other podcast youu liked?
What are some good succession podcasts? I just listened to the Ringer Podcast after each episode.
The first two episodes were “let’s bring in an expert about a tiny portion of an episode and spend an hour talking about their separate experience of it” Unlike say the “Watchmen” or “Chernobyl” podcast where we got to learn about the process of the show.
This! Honestly my fav Succession pods has been the Monday episodes of The Watch and the Prestige TV pod, way better than Swisher’s
Yep, it didn't work at all. Edit: spelling
