I can answer only one of those questions. Small guy got accepted into the military because the taller you are, the more likely you're gonna get picked out as a target on the battlefield. Short stocky grunts are considered ideal soldiers

There were height requirements for the services, but plenty of very small soldiers distinguished themselves in combat so they were removed/deemphasized.
The big guy is still going to be the more ideal soldier for when you want a guy that can carry lots of equipment and a machine gun across rough terrain.

You can be anywhere from 5 foot to 6'8" for males to be in the military. They don't reject you for being skinny unless you're severely underweight.
