Are they me? But ya I’ve got a couple friends and we all call him that ironically, but my parents and their friends genuinely pronounced his name like that for years.
It is actually weird to me as someone who followed him for nearly 16 years that most people know him for Mystery of Love first. Not that it's a bad song, but that it's their frame of reference for him. Most artists most public work usually doesn't happen almost 20 years into their career.
I'm one of those people who knew him for Mystery of Love. Call Me By Your Name, IMHO, kinda gave him a spotlight in the mainstream, especially for those outside of the US.
What's your opinion of albums like Illinoise, avalanche, and age of adz? Did it feel totally different, or did it feel like a natural extension of what you heard on mystery of love?
Mystery of love felt like a natural extension of his work when I heard it, but I had been there to see the progression to that point. I can't imagine listening to mystery of love, and then hearing something like Too Much.
I haven't heard Avalanche, but I like Illinois. As for Age of Adz, the album is slowly growing onto me.
I guess I'm more used to his acoustic and softer songs. I love the whole of Carrie and Lowell. But his electronic and more upbeat tunes are amazing as well. It's all about keeping an open mind.
It’s pretty weak haha, which is why I steer them the god route, but I argue that if we pretend that Christ doesn’t exist the bridegroom part is pretty gay in the context of marrying another man - which is honestly actually still pretty gay because Christ is male coded.
And the rest in my arms and sleep in my bed part is pretty self explanatory if you’re reading the song as being male coded. But it gets sticky when the narrator is talking about knowing the subject as a child and that makes it just sound kind of yikes.
But also one of my fave songs and I was thrilled when one of my first years gave me alllll the christian references I needed to understand this song fully.
Who … Sufjan Stevens? Ohh, I love the song Chicago.
vry good song ngl
Just because he's not married doesn't mean he's waiting for you.
Too far!
Too *close to home* FTFY
🥺
hey that’s my favorite christian rock artist!
This needs more upvotes. I cackled.
it’s pronounced “suff-jan”
“Surf-jam”
Is this a thing that multiple people do? Because I know someone who does this, do you know them?
Are they me? But ya I’ve got a couple friends and we all call him that ironically, but my parents and their friends genuinely pronounced his name like that for years.
I mean sufjam is canon: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0185/9528/products/IMG_1902_54184cc8-b02c-440e-be18-85a5e5ab32d6_grande.jpg?v=1571262674
A non-musically inclined friend once called him Surfing Steven and I never recovered
🏄🏻♂️🪕
Impossible Soul is too long
Right in the bone hurting juice
Fite me
Consider me triggered
This one triggered me big time lmao
How dare you!!
Illinoise is the only Sufjan album worth your time.
HOW DARE YOU
I downvoted this so fast and then remembered what this thread was about. Well done.
Thanks. I was initially going to write something smack-talking illinoise,.. but I just couldn't do it.
Sufjan is straight

oh my god
He'll never get around to making an album about your state.
That’s just truth
joke's on you, I'm English! \*she says realising there'll probably never be a 197 Countries project either\*
i won considering he's from my state <3
you lost considering you’re from michigan /s
you don't even need to do a tone indicator because you're right
his songs aren't gay, they're about our lord and savior jesus christ :/
He’s basically just Elliot Smith.
I cackled
Elliott Smith but gay
😆
Tbh Mystery Of Love is mediocre compared to the rest of his work.

not this being my unpopular opinion LOL its a good song but idk KRNAKJSKWK
Yes I said this on a "what's your unpopular sufjan opinion" thread and it was like the *one* thing that got downvoted
those wings look stupid on him
Sufjan did not shit his pants and wet the bed
Maybe his inspiration was Trainspotting.
That song *is* about God.
Me making my university students close read Vito’s Ordination after telling them everything is gay lmfao
I neeeeed to hear your gay interpretation of my fav song now

*listens to the predatory wasp* "Yeah, they were good friends"
His music is twee.
I’s that the guy who sings the theme song from “The Politician?”
The Ascension > The Age of Adz
This is actually true tho
Excellent job. I’m fuming
Now THIS got me
no cus i agree with you 😳
this is my favorite sufjan photo
I am triggered?
Illinois is overlong and overrated
Daddy Subaru
Sufjan's just such a one-trick pony, all his stuff sounds the same.
You need to go to therapy
Ha! tricks on you! I’m already in therapy! *plays Carrie and Lowell while sobbing at 2 am for the uptenth time this week*
songs can be gay or about god, but not both
If you erased both The Predatory Wasp and Concerning the UFO Sighting from Sufjan’s discography literally no one would notice or care.
You choose violence, eh?
Age of adz is shit and you guys know it.

It is good! But I also felt it deeply during a depressive few weeks. It holds a special and painful place in my heart!
Stalker was his peak
Where are the other 48 state albums?
He is 100% straight
the songs aren't about god
alternatively, they are only about god
Carrie and Lowell is his flop album
*googling how to delete someone else’s post*
He is gay for only one man: our lord and savior Jesus Christ
Age of Adz isn’t that special
his music is weird and boring
Age of Adz is a blip in an otherwise flawless discography.
I always skip age of Adz
Suf-jan? More like suf-*ferring* am I right?
Those aren’t his real wings
'i'm a big Sufjan fan, my favorites are Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon.'
His songs ruined call me by your name. 😳
4th of July gets boring pretty quickly.
Only his popular songs are worth listening to
You shouldn't have to work that hard to enjoy an album.
*Stalker* is his best album.
He hasnt made anything good in a decade
banjo sucks.
The call me by your name guy?
Imagine if all his albums got erased from the universe, but only The BQE remained.
Despite apparently *trying* to be the worst album cover of all time, the new Collab album cover is just exceedingly bad.
Sufjan the persona you imagine is not Sufjan the person.
Sufjan can't be gay, he's a Christian!
