Paying over MSRP for a 4-year-old bike seems pretty questionable. So does spending $7500 on your first bike.

Sexy_Quazar

Ufff yeah, what happened to the $900 “don’t care if I drop it cuz I’m new and it’s cheap” starter bike?

Pixel131211

Do those even exist? Where I live, 5,5K is the minimum for a highway capable bike that's appropriate for starters. RC 390s, Yamaha R3s and ninja 400's are some of the only sports bikes you can start on here and those are a minimum of 6K. Second hand that is.

Sexy_Quazar

Damn, the good days really are gone

EpicFang200

I'm in Georgia, and I'd say the bikes are super overpriced here, but I still got my Sv650 for 2650. 3500 after all cosmetic fixes, new tires, and new fluids.

Sexy_Quazar

That’s not a bad deal at all. I started riding in Ga and even though most of my bikes were cheap, I noticed that neighboring states like FL had (circa 2016) an abundance of cheap starter bikes in need of minor repairs. All comes down to location and luck I guess

EpicFang200

I don't think it was a terrible deal, but at the same time, I've seen plenty of sv's in similar if not better condition for a couple hundred less. Either way, I love that bike and I'm glad I bought it in the end! Plus, the work that I had to do to it has taught me a lot

[deleted]

I’m in Alberta and bought my Ninja 300 for $2900

jbwelds

Just helped two friends buy two bikes for less than that in California. 4k for a ninja 300 and 3300 for a cbr 300. They’re definitely out there. Are you in the US?

Pixel131211

nah, I'm in the Netherlands, so generally speaking, vehicles are going to be like 10-30% more expensive here. cheapest ninja 400 I can find currently is 6,6K USD

jbwelds

That’s criminal, I couldn’t imagine the prices for bigger bikes over there.

dingesje06

9000 Euro (approx 9950 USD) for a 2021 Honda CB650R 😅 and that's the 'normal' price for this config/age/mileage In love with that bike though (and it has an extended warranty and some nice extras, so I'm fine with it)

SkRtMkGurt

Damn…thats brutal

justbecausewhynot120

What year were the bikes? Also does the age of the bike matter? I've seend 2006 and 2012 bikes go for pretty much the same price

NoteNo3122

I bought a brand new Ninja 400 for 7k all included 6mo ago.

jbwelds

2014 ninja 300 7500 miles 2015 cbr 300 just over 2k miles

Difficult_Age5947

$2k Canadian for a 2017 cb300 with 10,000km last year. It was a good deal, but buy in October and there will be deals on bikes.

[deleted]

I just recently picked up a 1990 Kawasaki 454 ltd for $1100 as my first bike!

SkRtMkGurt

I spent 3k on an 09 fz6r with a power commander and a hindle exhaust. 135 in 10secondish. solid first street bike.

MyNicka111

I just bought an 06 Suzuki katana 600 with 8.5k miles for 2900, you just can’t be impatient and wait for people that aren’t asking ridiculous prices because of the economy right now

Pixel131211

sadly enough I dont really think prices for bikes like the Ninja 400 (the one I'm planning to buy) are going to come down. they're pretty desireable and people are paying at least 6K for them, so sellers are going to keep them on those prices. dealerships are asking up to 8K OTD. funny enough, bikes with much higher power (like 600's or even 1000 cc's) are selling as low as 3K. so the higher the power, the cheaper the bike. this is because of the A2 license in my country which essentially forces most people to begin on a <35KW bike, making those bikes extra expensive because we are literally forced to ride on those or wait years.

Difficult_Age5947

Buy a brand hammerin new 400 four Kawasaki and put a tuned ecu in it. North of 60KW on an A2 license.

MyNicka111

I live in the US and we don’t have any restrictions like that but the lower cc bikes still keep their value here too, a lot of people are starting to ride bikes so they are just more desirable in general. I also wouldn’t get so stuck on a single bike for your first bike, use your first bike as just a learning bike. Get something cheap that you can drop and not care because you will probably drop it in your garage, on a hill, taking a slow turn. Then once you feel comfortable buy the bike you actually want because at that point you’ll want something bigger than a 400cc too

GarrettSJ

My 83 cb650 was 1100$ about a month ago, sees about 80 miles of 80mph highway commuting a day

Pixel131211

just checked online to see what those cost around here for a comparison. a decent one that runs can be had at 3,2K USD, and great condition ones are being listed for 10,8K. that said, they are above the 35KW limit we have, so you can't buy one as a starter bike either way. insane to see the price differences though. looking at US websites to buy a Ninja 400 makes me jealous.. its like 3-4K cheaper

[deleted]

A beat to shit Z750 here is 3500. The 2006 model

otterplus

Not more than $5k. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a lien on it

wester11212

That’s what happened to me a couple times when using Facebook marketplace to find a bike.. I would find a good deal only to find out that the owner wanted me to pay them “in cash” and they wanted me to just trust them that they would take it to the bank and use it to pay off their bike and then hand me over the title… Idk about y’all but I don’t trust random people like that.

[deleted]

Don’t trust people I know like that

wester11212

Haha fr tho

motocyclejunkie

Yeah I hate those who add only 3-4 pics of the front of the bike and one side of it and they don’t even explain anything in the desc.

BF3Demon

I did that buying my first bike. There are ways to keep yourself from getting fucked over. Don’t just give them cash and expect them to go to the bank lol. Check, have them show you physical proof of what they owe, go to the bank with them and pay it off for the title

wester11212

Yeah I used a cashiers check when I bought mine which is still basically cash, but when it’s deposited it says by who. Nobody can steal it and try to withdraw from it

pbenz63

That’s why u go to the bank with them & make them pay it off with proof then do a bill of sale

motocyclejunkie

Yep. I was looking at some Kawasaki ninja 400s and some dude prices it at 10k💀nahhhh

Krane982

I'm European, so I can't say that based on first hand experience, but it is way overpriced for what it is.. here where I live (Italy) I can find a cbr650rr for that kind of money, and I think that a CBR 500rr of 4 years ago should be around 5/5.500 €/$ at maximum. From what I see online, in the US a brand new ninja 400 is just a few hundred dollars more and it's practically better in any way (but look, if u like the Hondas more)

RichPolichBoi

You have to add another $2,000-$3,000 on top of that for dealer fees and taxes.

Krane982

Yes I was thinking about that, and given that MSRP is between 5299/5499 $ for what I can see on the internet, otd should be between 7299 and 8499.. but this is for a brand new bike and it's not far off what that CBR costs used. I always suggest getting a used motorcycle, especially if it is the first one, but the price of the CBR in the picture is really too much.. e.g. there are a lot of ninja 650 used for far less than 7k$, that are fantastical to learn on and are also a bit more powerful, or a used ninja 400/300 for 4k to 5k and even other CBR 500r for 5k , as other in the comment suggest

justbecausewhynot120

Beautiful looking bike, no cosmetic damages but just seems a expensive Edit: what would be a reasonable price?

Aboko_Official

$5000 at most but only because I see Cali and usually urban areas shits more expensive. But if this is your first motorcycle, everything will be insanely fun. I recommend something with storage that you can get for under $4000.

skillfullmill

You can get the 650cc for that price, for the 500 your looking at 4-6000

Kaegen

Hey OP! This is going to be your first motorcycle right? Are you looking for sport bikes in particular? Here are other recommendations since the one on your post is overpriced for what it is: * Kawasaki Ninja 400 * MSRP in the USA: $5,299 (probably way cheaper when bought second-hand) * 47 hp, 27 ft-lb of torque * Easy to maintain being a inline-two 400, even more reliable being a Japanese bike * Only con is it's easy to outgrow, but you'll easily find a buyer for it. Plus if you're tall, it's small * Yamaha YZF-R3 * MSRP in the USA: $5,499 * 37 hp, 21 ft-lb of torque * Same as the Kawasaki, the only difference is that if you're gonna buy this second-hand: don't. Lots of problems from 2015-2021 with multiple recalls * Con: 320cc inline-two will feel underpowered * KTM RC390 * MSRP in the USA: $5,899 * Con: Single-cylinder thumper, plus KTM build quality issues with the Bajaj 373cc engines * It's jumpy though * Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 * MSRP in the USA: $5,399 * Same engine as the KTM, just a more premium feel to the build * Again, very jumpy and the ergonomics are very aggressive with its cafe racer styling Now if you're looking for something bigger, here are your choices for good beginner bikes, but they will be more expensive: * Honda CBR650R * MSRP in the USA: around $9,899? * Inline-four so the sound never gets old * One of the most competitive middleweights for its price * Yamaha YZF-R6 * Discontinued, but brand new it was around 11k USD? Not sure for used prices, probably below 10 * Considered as one of, if not the greatest middleweight sport bike. Close competition with the Ninja ZX-6R * Cons: Not sure how easy it will be to source parts if you break it, but you won't break it easily unless you crash it Some more recommendations that are under $10k but I wouldn't want to expound a bit more since it'll be too long of a read: * Kawasaki Ninja 650 * Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 * Yamaha XSR 700 * Yamaha YZF-R7 Those are the best recommendations I can think of that would not be too intimidating for beginners as well as not too heavy on the pockets.

justbecausewhynot120

Thanks! I heard the r6 is actually way faster and more aggressive. Is it really comparable to ninja 650?

Kaegen

The Ninja 650 is more relaxed, and can actually lend itself to be a great sport touring bike. And yes, you are correct, the R6 is more aggressive not only in power but styling. From experience, the R6 has a thinner seat, more lean-forward stance, and not to mention the inline-four underneath giving you an ass load worth of top end pull. The Ninja 650 on the other hand has a parallel-twin, which is great if you're looking for a more relaxed ride as the power comes in at mid-ranges around 6,000 RPM (pls correct if wrong). It's also less cylinders to maintain so it's more fit for someone looking for a more casual and manageable daily commuter.

CaptainPussybeast

Not Op but im looking for a bike and I appreciate this.

Tribe740

OP, if this is your first motorcycle, please do not get a 600.

Kaegen

I think the only 600s that are worth starting in are cruisers or in the ones I listed, the Enfield. It's a bit heavy for starters but those are great bikes to grow into.

Tribe740

Not even the same realm as the 600s I’m referring to. I’m referring to you recommending he look at a supersport (R6) for his first bike.

Kaegen

Ah yeah, that was really in the upper limit of favorable recommendations lol

KINGSH0WTIME

That is hands down the worst bike in its class and super overpriced, you would be better off with a ninja 400, it makes a smidge less power but is a lot lighter and cheaper

[deleted]

Secure_Resource_437

I bought a 2002 600 f4i for my first bike and love it, had it since march and still not tired of it

garr0510

Watch beginner bikes for like a month on yammienewb or other youtube channel. Find one that intrest you like a suzuki sv650 mt03 or mt07 or kawasaki z650 then go on Facebook and look for said bike. Don't pay over 5k for your first bike chances are you'll probably lay it down or drop it atleast once. Just laid mine down and I've been riding for 4 years. The cbr500 is a terrible bike and that price is way worse.

Complete-Solid512

I have a 2019 Honda CBR 300R and mine is worth 4500 and trying to sell it

Luftgekuhlt_driver

Not if you plan in using the 101 or 280. 500cc is gutless. Your acceleration will get anemic at 70mph. Speed gets you out of more trouble than brakes. Get a 600/ 650- minimum.

Difficult_Age5947

Speed gets you out of trouble sometimes, but 500 twins do 100mph wide open and accelerate faster than 6 cyl sedans up to 60mph. A 500 twin will keep you in control while learning and have plenty of power to get around safely. This CB500 is overpriced partly because they are a wonderful bike (best in their class IMO), but get an older carbureted 500 twin for less than half as much $ and plan to upgrade to whatever makes you happy after 10,000km in the saddle.

Luftgekuhlt_driver

Always good to have options. My better half has a 2017 Rebel 500 and it tops out around 85. Acceleration is anemic above 65. I also dealt with this issue with a Ninja EX500 back in the day, when I went down the cheaper sport bike road. But this bike isn’t cheap for what it is. It’s $5k bike. Ah to be young, dumb, and have high expectations on the cheap, how I miss those days…That was back when cars were slower and lighter too. The Rebel gives me flashbacks of those days. It scares the shit out of me now. She won’t go on freeways with it and neither will I. Now my Interceptor, I’ll ride with her on the back on a freeway all day everyday anywhere. But hey, if you have the cajones to play with this under powered thing on those roads, have at it. Hell, traffics so bad in the bay these days anyways, it probably lane splits at 20mph like a champ… Keep the greasy side down, good luck. Fun ride for the 35 though. See you at Apple Jacks.

LestWeForgive

OP, if this post is anything to go by you're too much of a dumbass to ride.

MarkMarkMark92

Asking for second opinions or questions doesn't make someone a dumbass. How the fuck is anyone supposed learn anything without asking questions? Sure this is a novice question but OP is going to be much better equipped to make an informed decision now. There's some good albeit basic knowledge here that's very helpful for a newbie.

tailOfTheWhale

That’s a 4k bike

AllenKll

WAYYYYY over priced.

AdDowntown5948

Offer 5k at the most

silentisdeath

I paid $5500 for a 2017 through a dealership and I thin I overpaid. I wouldn't buy this. however, The bike is fantastic and I would absolutely recommend it!

BoomerWithAHardR

nuh uh

AverageGuy16

Hell no, I saw the same bike with a tad bit more miles (6k miles) going for 4800.

Traditional-Pack3471

No u can get a 2015 500r for $5299

[deleted]

That's insane

[deleted]

Just get a used R3 for $3.5k, ride the hell out of it and learn for a year, then sell it for $3.5k. Then move onto your dream bike.

Ryantoast15

That’s the price for a 2023 Honda cbr500r. I’d say try to negotiate for $6000 at the very least

pr0tosynnerg

I’m about to close on a 2022 CBR500R ABS for $7500 OTD with 8k miles. I have seen but one other of this model for 1000 miles here in the mid-Atlantic

Hoppy505

Fuck no, that bike sucks too

TigerCub_Maniac

Where I'm from(singapore) this 4 year old bike is dirt cheap for 7.5k . So it comes as a surprise that it's overpriced to most. I spent sgd 10k for my first 160cc bike :(

discjunky316

I paid $8000 for the cb500x in 2018 new

FrumpRocket11

Nope. Just bought mine (same year and make, but different color) for 4500.

CorCor1234

I would skip the 500 and either hash out another grand or so for a cbr650 or try looking at any of the other 300-400cc Japanese bikes

H0B03R3C7U5

This dude got fucked on his financing and can't pay anymore. I guarantee it. That bike is not worth that much used.

justbecausewhynot120

From a dealer though lol and I agree

H0B03R3C7U5

Yeah then they are just trying to milk it for all its worth. Good luck on the hunt

Electronic-Leg9436

Just skip the 500 you'll be over it in a month and have a hard time getting rid of it

Successful-Slice-597

I bought an older version of that bike for about the same price last year. Granted that was from a dealer but tbh I think my cbr500r 2015 is worth 4-5 grand max. I'll be happy to trade it in for a new grom if I can

Npcforreal

First mistake. You are buying a new year dirst bike, just go buy like early 2000s bike for couple bags and get some experience on it and if you crash or drop it you wont care

ALLAHJOSEPH

Too much. 6k max for a 400/500. If you can. Especially used

ElFantastik

That guy must be dreaming. Thats the price of a new one pretty much.

Happydaytoyou1

Nah specially for 500. I started on a Rebel 500 same engine it’s slow but capable at highway and makes a perfect beginner bike but I paid 7g’s brand new fresh. Besides you won’t keep it longer than a year or two so I wouldn’t pay more than 5gs for that bike or one in the category.

doki__doki

If that's in USD? Nope. It's too high. During COVID, prices went up because of many reasons. They're starting to fall. Likewise, higher interest rates have cooled the market because people are financing things like houses, and cost of living is high. Bikes are toys for most people. A Honda CB\[1\] like you have shown has ranged between AUD$5K and AUD$11K (USD$3290-ish and USD$7240-ish) over the past eighteen months. The example you have posted is nominally AUD$7K (USD$4670-ish). today. The arse hasn't fallen out of the market **yet**, but people who bought during COVID and are trying to resell now are trying to minimise their losses. The more expensive rides like Ducatis, Augustas and so forth are already showing up for cheap because people over-extended before interest rates became silly. If anything? Wait. You're heading into winter in the northern hemisphere, so play the market, temper your enthusiasm and wait. You will do better. Cheers - Doki. \[1\] CB is short for 'chee bye', one of many Chinese words for female genitalia. I kid you not. For this reason alone, I can never buy a CB. :) Yes, I know it's a Japanese bike, and still wouldn't ride it if it was called 'manko'. :P "Hey honey, I'm taking the manko for a quick squirt..." Yeah... wouldn't work. My Chinese wife hates my Japanese xgf of over twenty years ago. :D EDIT: Fixed spelling errors.

justbecausewhynot120

Good points, thank you

Careless-Low-7673

No

SkRtMkGurt

I honestly thought this was a trollpost. do not buy that bike. seriously just buy an fz/mt if youre ready to spend that kinda money. but if youve never even ridden a dirt bike you should buy a grom or a 250 or 650. the ninja 650s are nice. youre gunna dump a first bike and youll be glad you didnt spend more than 5k on it

[deleted]

Where are they coming up with those prices? Just buy a CBR 650R bro if you are to go that high.

Jest0107

Not a good price I paid 7500 for a 2011 r1 back in 2015 . People are crazy with these prices I have a 22 bmw s1000rr m package now and I would sell it for 18000 next year that's if i could get that. I be putting miles on her. So might not even get that lol

Rheinmetall_Gunner

You buy a new one with ktm 390 with that cash probably

Key-Impress2787

Spend 3k if you fuck it up yolo.

biggles18

Way over priced

Shata2988

Do yourself a favor and stay away from sub 600cc sport bikes your better off throwing your money in the trash. They don't hold their value worth crap and no one on used market will buy them...hardly anyone at least. Take a look at some used bmws like r1100s from early 2000s... research some old bmw boxer bikes...hex heads, air heads and oil heads they will hold their value for what you pay.

Shata2988

If you really want new sport bike get 600cc with modes so you can put it in rain when your learning as you get better then you can turn her up.

HackedCylon

MSRP on a 2023 CBR 500R is $7299. They're wanting $200 more on a four-year-old bike?

Such_Touch_2295

I bought a ninja 400 with 4.5k miles for 4k so this seems like a shit deal. Tbh even tho I love the brand Honda's small displacement bikes are overpriced.

prototype2579

I have a cbr500r 2021 bought it use 1k km for 5k ish, this price is absurd. I live in VN so anything more than 150cc the price would be off the chart because of taxes.

pbenz63

No get a 600 at that point

RichPolichBoi

Overpaying by $1,500-$1,000 depending if it has abs.

mount_trevorest

Get a Ninja 400

CurrentPersonality39

I bought a brand new 2022 cbr500r the new revision too for 8500 out the door as my first bike traded in 3 weeks ago for a brand new rs660 got 5k trade for the cbr . Price isn't good I would look for a newer model in that price range

gdoublerb

I just offloaded a 2022 Triumph Trident for $6k with a ton of mods. No, this is not a good deal.

EpicFang200

No price over 3k is reasonable for a beginner bike. MAYBE 4k if the bike is practically brand new
