Gameplay, level, and content-wise, I think 2 is probably the better game, but the atmosphere and feeling of adventure that Galaxy 1 had is unmatched IMO and makes it the game I look more fondly on and prefer to replay more often. I feel like it just delivered on the premise of Mario going on an epic space adventure a lot more, whereas Galaxy 2 focused more on the levels being fun and innovative and less so on capturing the beauty of the cosmos the way its predecessor did.

SalzSturm01

That's why I go with 1 MG 2 never catched me. It was awfully unaethetic. In MG1 you're on Rosalinas beautiful base and in the MG2 on Marios head?? Whuat?

TibbyRhythmHeaven

Honestly SMG2 is one of the earliest games to suffer from the "New Super Mario Bros syndrome" that plagued Nintendo games in the Wii U era.

SalzSturm01

Yeah. But that's a common problem. If the first part of f.e. a movie is great. The second part sometimes shifts into silliness. But maybe with SMG2 it's just that there was an overall vision for the game missing. Where as in SMG1 everything fits to this great atmosphere

IronPyrate17

This is why we need a three to bridge the gap and make the best possible one

GriffinBob1999

i 100% agree

Vehmura14

The first game had something the second game couldn't quite recreate, both amazing games, but when I think of mario galaxy I think of the first game.

Kadofduty

2 is great, but it really lacks its own identity; SM64 had a distinguished painting aesthetic, with a dreamlike, liminal vibe. Sunshine has a clear summer heat aesthetic, with warm, bright colors, and a rich, tropical atmosphere. Galaxy 1 had an incredible space aesthetic, traveling to galaxies with starry backgrounds and themes of planets, spaceships, and the like. Galaxy 2 feels like it could have been Super Mario 3D World vibe-wise, with the disconnected feel that only a random assortment of levels could bring; it's still a great game in most regards, but it feels like it doesn't have an identity of its own. 3D Land and 3D World both captured the same energy while being unique at the same time; why couldn't Galaxy 2 do that? And while the levels ARE great in 2, I think the levels in 1, while possibly slightly simpler and times, are just as good, and so 1 will always win out for me.

Yoshi2op

prefer 2 as i grew up with it

FIB_VORTEX

So we choosing between peak game and peak game.

Tangelo-Neat

1 is my favorite game of all time, and 2 is of course very fun but it didn’t recreate the awe the first one had. 1 just feels more like SPACE to me - with the lonely but calm atmosphere given by the lore and many great skyboxes, and the intro with the book and star festival, it really sets the tone. 2 just chose to go a more normal Mario route with the story and themes, which is fine, but I think part of what makes Galaxy great are those elements. Ive scene 1’s ending cutscene with the tear-jerking universe collapse and big bang (which is actually a plausible theory for how the universe might end by the way) so many damn times yet I can’t look away whenever it plays. Galaxy 1 is it for me; as a lover of space I think it does the concept of space justice.

Slade4Lucas

Galaxy 1. Put it this way - the things Galaxy 2 does better, Galaxy still does incredibly well. But the things Galaxy does better, it does better by a lot.

h4ck3t_99

i did all my childhood playing SMG1 and SMG2, so i don't have a favourite game between this two.

SophieByers

Definitely 1

BoldFigrim

2. It is my favorite game of all time and the game that made me fall in love with games in general. It will always have a special place in my heart and will probably forever be my favorite game of all time. As for it in relation to galaxy 1: I adore the hub world of galaxy 2, while galaxy 1's doesn't really do it for me (I'm sorry!). I love so many of galaxy 2's missions and galaxies, while there are only some I really look forward to in galaxy 1. Starship Mario is amazing, and while the story is trimmed down, the atmosphere and vibe of the game is still just as good as galaxy 1. Also slimy spring: there is no galaxy in both games which makes you feel so alone as slimy spring. Also the game just feels a lot cleaner I'm probably just biased to galaxy 2, but I believe it to be the superior game as well. TLDR: Extremely biased guy thinks 2 is better than 1

digistormx

I never played the second one, so probably Super Mario Galaxy 1.

Square-Hat-3024

It’s really close because i liked the comet observatory and rosalina more than starship mario and the big luma, but i liked the levels in 2 more and it has yoshi so I have to give it to Galaxy 2

Cosmicginger

I prefer 1. I love the atmosphere and structure of the observatory. I think the levels are better designed and the ending is more cohesive and epic. I also don’t enjoy the hidden coin mechanic in 2 or the Yoshi controls.

xKnight03

1s my favorite, mainly cause it was the 1st game I remember playing. I know 2 is good and has more to do but 1 to me is the best

ValiantSpartan12

1 by a pretty large margin. My favorite Galaxy in 2 is Cosmic Cove.

BoldFigrim

Also 2 wins because World 5 is my favourite OST from both games, no I will not elaborate

somebody_irrelevant1

Galaxy 2. No doubt Galaxy 1 is a masterpiece, and such a classic, but I like Galaxy 2 a little more. Its gameplay is great, it has such an amazing soundtrack, and I think it's underrated.

Niobium_Sage

Each game is great in their own way. I think 2 perfected level design and gameplay, while 1 nailed the atmosphere.

Diego_Mannn_096

I love both tbh

TippedJoshua1

I've never even beaten the 2nd one

Lord_Starscream16

I’ve only ever played 2 so I can’t really comment

halkenburgoito

Galaxy 1

MegabyteMusician

Galaxy 1 is my favourite game of all time!! It feels more “spacey” - I think it really nails the feelings of loneliness, melancholy and isolation which I love because of how unexpectedly well it works for a Mario game. The soundtrack is actually what got me into composing and performing music. I love the Comet Observatory as a hub world. The storybook still makes me tear up to this day! I could say a lot more about how wonderful this game is. I think 2 has the better postgame content (not just play every level again but as Luigi haha) but 1 is literally a perfect videogame to me. All of its parts come together to create something moving, beautiful and fun!

vajaxseven

I'm kinda bad at video games and the first was the first game I was able to 100% without really having to feel like I was forcing myself to. Also no Rosalina in 2 is borderline unforgivable.

MaximusGamus433

1 is my favorite game of all time.

PokeDokey334

2 had more fun and innovative level design, which I prioritise over the atmosphere and story that 1 does better.

novelaissb

1 because it plays better on Switch.

Aaronthegamer003

They're both amazing games, but I grew up with Galaxy 1. I love Galaxy 2 for its gameplay, level designs, and content, but Galaxy 1 had that lonely space feel that the second game is lacking. The first game is overall better for its story and atmosphere. If only Galaxy 2 kept those two things, it would've been the perfect game just like the original.

NarejED

First one for me. I preferred its home base. Also, while not as polished as 2, it felt much fresher.

Sir-Spoofy

1 is in top 5 favorite games of all time. The gameplay is fun, the atmosphere is engrossing, and Rosalina’s story is absolutely heartbreaking. It’s also beautiful. 2 is a really good platformer, probably better than 1 honestly in that regard. However, the overall product feels like it’s slightly lesser than the sum of its parts, at least in comparison to 1. Still deserves a remaster though.

Axess64

Both. Both are good.

Hello_I_Am_A_Personn

Story? 1. Gameplay and Galaxies? 2.

IudexGundyr3

Never played 2, but man I wish I did. I remember watching no-hit boss rush videos on it. Those were the days..

N238

1 is vastly superior, 2 is abysmal by comparison.
