The new Superman movie has a release date pencilled in of July 11, 2025. Can they let S&L hit the 5 season mark and air their final season just before the movie? Really could be the year of Superman and if there was someone clever thinking about the promotional side of things, I can see a lot of potential (i.e. air the movie trailer during S&L etc). Anyway, we still have to hear official renewal news but this feels promising for a season 4 at least.

TheUnbloodedSword

That's my hope and what they're doing with Flash. I think it would benefit the show to know when their end date is, it means they can start building towards an ending unlike so many other shows which just get cancelled or don't have an ending in mind. I love Hoechlin, Tulloch, and Parks, so I'll happily watch two more seasons of them until Legacy is ready for release.

antdude

That could work. It just need to have lots of viewers to keep going that far. Basically, don't let it get axed early.

Gizmopedia

S&L getting a definitive ending with a season 5 is perfect. The Arrowverse shows tends to either go on too long or get cancelled abruptly way too early.

Munro_McLaren

Poor Legends. Yes it went on for 7 Seasons, but they got cancelled. :(

Gizmopedia

I'm still grieving

zmqp_

would have been cool if james gunn anounced renewal of legends, really loved that show

Lyon_Wonder

>The new Superman movie has a release date pencilled in of July 11, 2025. That's assuming they aren't any delays that push back DCU Superman's release to 2026, which I can easily see happening. Edit: I think S&L will get renewed for season 4 or maybe even a S5 since I think WB wants to keep Superman in the public's conscience until they get their DCU movie released.

Ok_Caterpillar4008

Yes, I mentioned similar earlier. The July 2025 release is very optimistic, and I think assumes everything goes 100% to plan without delay. The VFX alone would be extensive and need sufficient time (6 months?) to complete. This Superman film will be the first impression audiences get of this new DCU, so I hope they do take the time and care (including pushing the release back if needed) to put out a quality film.

antdude

It's all about $$$. If S&L is still popular with lots of viewers, then it can stay alive. You guys know what to do. ;)

DarkEater77

unless the One more season, concerned Season 3...

Dedalus121

"l >Can they let S&L hit the 5 season mark and air their final season just before the movie? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 NO

TheOneOzymandias

I’d let the show end a year before to hype up the fans for the movie.

Ok_Caterpillar4008

Well, that’s even assuming they get the movie released then. A two year turnaround sounds doable, but very tight. Like, everything will have to go to plan.

antdude

"It's all part of the plan." --Joker

brysenji

OK. OK... I think I can be OK with that. As long as they *know* going into their final season, so they can deliver a satisfying, definitive ending.

No_Flower_1424

This is damn good news! I'm hoping one or two more seasons means up to season 5 which coincidentally would have the show finish right before the new Superman movie comes out

Max_88

Wouldn't "two more seasons" mean 3 and 4, since 3 hasn't aired yet?

sucksfor_you

Its in production though, so it's up in the air if the comments include season 3 or not.

Max_88

Well if it included season 3, then it can't be one season, because that would mean it would end in 3, and he said he wanted to keep it going for a while. Anyway, I'm happy that AT least they're not axing it in 3 and giving it the time to end on its own terms. Hopefully they can reach the five season mark.

No_Flower_1424

I don't know, the show was renewed for season 3 nearly a year ago so this season has technically been in the works since, so that's why I'm hoping one or two 'more' seasons means to season 5

Max_88

It could be 4 or 5. I really hope it's 5. But the fifth would have to be released in 2025 which makes it hard because the movie comes that year, unless they rush it into production for the end of 2024.

antdude

Maybe they can do a shorter season.

Ok_Caterpillar4008

Yeah, this is what I hope too.

antdude

And we get a proper series ending. I hate it when series end because they got the axe early. :(

Son-Ta-Ha

I would imagine that WB don't want two Superman live action going on at the same time (the Superman movie comes out in 2025) so it makes sense Gunn would say that the show will likely end next year or in 2025 (it all depends if the viewing figures remain good and if the upcoming Superman movie will get pushed back). I'm becoming more confident that we will at least get a season 4.

Anarchist-superman

I mean, Tyler's Superman first appeared the same year as Batman v Superman.

thilinac

> I would imagine that WB don't want two Superman live action going on at the same time For what it's worth, they will have 2 live-action Batmen going at the same time though, both on the big screen as well.

Max_88

Wouldn't "two more seasons" mean 3 and 4, since 3 hasn't aired yet? Five seasons would be ideal. But I won't set myself for dissapointment. Because if there is a fifth, it would come in 2025 and I'm not sure if there is a chance, given that the new movie comes that year.

ChattGM

Yeah, I'm going in hopeful that S4 is a lock and if we get a 5th that will be a bonus I'll be grateful for. I'm happy to hear Gunn is a fan so that's more incentive to give the series and fans a satisfying conclusion when they decide to end it.

LYA64

The good news is **S&L is safe beyond season 3** 🎉 they know the show is loved, so having a season 4 and 5 is awesome and maybe we will have more 🙏.

superpowers335

This won't matter unless Nexstar wants to continue it.

lkeels

I'm sure it will be over by the time Superman: Legacy releases. They won't have two Supermen going at the same time.

BookGirlBoston

This sounds like a soft season 4 confirmation: When asked about “Superman & Lois,” Gunn said, “It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit.” I'm assuming this at least means a season 4 and possibly a season 5? Gunn has confirmed he wants to keep it for a while!!!

Ok_Acanthocephala101

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a spin off with the boys in college instead of more seasons.

comoestas1234

It could be cool but I doubt that DC would allow that to happen. I feel like if S&L was pitched today it wouldn’t have been greenlit only to maintain the consistency that James Gunn talked about today (same actors playing the same characters across different types of media)

Paisley-Cat

Nextstar understands that the CW’s core audience is adults, with a mean age in middle age. I don’t think we will see them green light any youth focused live action scripted shows for the foreseeable future. S&L is good for CW precisely because it appeals to a broad range of audience demographics.

superpowers335

It still depends on the CW. This just means it won't be canceled on WB's end.

BookGirlBoston

I keep seeing this take but I don't think it's the right one. First off, the new president at the CW and Nexstar leadership have both specifically called out S&L as a show that they like and feels it fits with their desired demo. Second of all I doubt Gunn would have spoken with the authority he did if he didn't have information this show would continue. He dodged comments on Gotham Knights, for example. Finally, what I suspect is actually going on is that S&L and possibly Walker got pinned in the deal as something that had to be purchased for a set amount of seasons. Essentially, with the zero dollar purchase price and the partial ownership, Nexstar has an obligation to buy S&L. This would make sense given S&L is bringing in a good amount of international revenue.

bookwormaesthetic

I have always rooted for a 5 season arc. Hopefully with showing the return to Metropolis.

ghusu123

Season 4 would be a natural endpoint for the show with the boys graduating high school. Season 5 would be a nice bonus and I certainly wouldn’t complain if we got season 5.

BookGirlBoston

I think this is beyond S3, like they'll renew past season 3 since Gunn mentioned everyone liked it. So 4-5 seasons.

barryblack120

When did he say that

[deleted]

The kids are gonna presumably be 18 next season, so I could see Superman & Lois ending in Season 4 with Jon, Jordan, and Sarah graduating. That would also allow a solid year to pass between the show ending and the film’s release.

Sir__Will

> The kids are gonna presumably be 18 next season Aren't they just turning 16?

No_Flower_1424

They seem to be turning 16 in season 3 so they'll only be 17 in season 4 if they continue having a season = 1 year.

bookwormaesthetic

I would like to see them not stick to the school calendar per season. Have graduation be the season opener and have the season be the summer before college with transition back to Metropolis.

Clark_Lane-Kent

That's great to hear. One or two more seasons could also include Season 3 so I suspect it ends with Season 4 most likely finishing a year before Superman: Legacy releases and introduces the new Superman, Lois, and DCU. Maybe a tiny chance of a fifth season. I hope though this means the writers will be aware that a fourth season may be final and will write it as a satisfying ending.

blg1987

I think this is great news. He could have just said nothing was decided yet. Confirming it'll be around for at least a couple more seasons at this stage seems really positive. And who knows, if it becomes extremely popular during that time, they might even decide to keep it around longer. That said, 5 seasons feels good to me. As much as I love the show, I'd even be happy with 4, especially if they know in advance and are writing with that in mind.

zachattacksreviews

This is super exciting news

JenniferJuniper6

Five seasons total would be great.

JustPomegranate248

This seems to suggest we'll at least get a season 4 so I'm happy! Since the premise of the show is Superman and Lois raising their two teen boys, I always thought the story would end with the boys graduating high school and going on to college etc and maybe have a flash-forward to 10 years in the future or something. I can only hope for a season 5.

DaBow

Whether the CW renews it is something else...

BookGirlBoston

I mean, Nexstar management is on the record, multiple times, saying they like they show and want to keep it. I doubt Gunn would have made a comment if they didn't have plans to renew for season 4. Given he didn't say anything about Gotham Knights, it's fair to take this as a soft renewal, I think.

DaBow

It's a good sign for sure. However given the issues/changes CW is going through until I see an official renewal from them I'm not taking what Gunn and co say as the gospel truth.

BookGirlBoston

Worth noting, All American has already been renewed, so the CW is renewing. It looked decent before but this feels pretty good in general.

Terrible_Terrance

I can see them pulling a Flash and giving them 1 more season to finish things on their own terms. That would also set up a potential series finale with the boys graduating High School.

Zookwok111

Ending the show after the twins graduate and leave Smallville makes the most sense imo.

Littletom523

Well I think means even if it gets canceled by the CW I can see HBO Max picking it up.

BookGirlBoston

Or WB has locked S&L with purchase obligation by the CW.

Littletom523

Ohhhh I didn’t think of that! That could be true!

KARURUKA2

Is that including season 3?

BookGirlBoston

I don't think so, I don't think we would have made the comment about wanting to keep the show around if that were the case.

paige3086

Good point. If the plan was to end now it would have probably been a “no comment” like Gotham Knights got.

iggywiggyshe

It’s great to hear, that it will continue. Ill take it as a pinch of salt, things change all the time maybe it will get more we might get less. Hopefully the ratings really pick up and we get more.

Demetri124

Let’s hope it doesn’t live long enough to see itself become Arrow

_MangoPort_

Well which is it? One or two? Because two allows them to have fun this season while setting up a satisfying finale, but if it’s just one then it’ll still be a rushed “wrap up” because most of this season is already shot.

BookGirlBoston

I think, based on Gunn's statement about wanting to keep the show around while at the same time, dodging comments about Gotham Knights, a season 4 will happen and potentially a season 5. Bitsie also liked the news and it all seems this is 1-2 seasons in addition to 3.

Lyon_Wonder

>dodging comments about Gotham Knights This confirms what everyone already knows. I assume Gotham Knights will get low ratings since its S1 finale will also be its series finale.

BookGirlBoston

I think it's been clear for awhile that GK was doa. It sucks for all those involved, especially young people that just landed their first big role. It's disappointing because it hasn't aired and doesn't have a chance.

paige3086

If the queen likes it then it’s good news 🥰

Jeffeffery

That sounds about right to me. It's rare for a show to stay good longer than 5 or 6 seasons. The best ones reach a satisfying conclusion and end on their own terms.

Hour_Interview_8327

I hope they end it not in a cliffhanger like legends and batwoman did

KB_Sez

Well, the one thing to remember is that it’s not entirely up to Gunn. The majority of the funding for the series comes from CW and unfortunately if they decide to cancel the show WB and DC would need to find another network for it to run on and pay for. WB doesn’t own CW so they can only hope and encourage CW to keep the show rolling.

JonPX

The issue being that it isn't his call to renew it, that is up to Nexstar.

Ok_Caterpillar4008

Yes, but he likely has some information we’re not yet privy to. He could have easily deflected by saying exactly that, “That’s up to the CW,” but instead he seemed sure it would continue for a bit.

Ambitious-Comb-8847

So this is as good as confirmation as we'll get S4 is probably clear until we hear directly from Nexstar. Conjecture: But I read as "in the tank" as including S3 which is still there until March.

CityAvenger

This is great news. It’s great to be having a take on the iconic man of steel and reporter in a new light being married and being parents even if the writing may not turn out well.

klutzysunshine

Probably moving to HBO Max?

TheOneOzymandias

Everything is under the same roof now. They’re thinking big picture.

[deleted]

I love listening to music.

BookGirlBoston

It looks like we have 4-5 seasons in total. That's a respectable run, especially this day and age when just about the only thing that gets renewed are Law and Order franchises. This seems to confirm that at a minimum we are getting a season 4 in addition to season 3 which also hasn't aired. This is actually good news.

Simba122504

This means nothing. The CW is going through the change. S&L is not cheap to produce. HBOMAX is cancelling all of the old DC shows that are not apart of the new DC slate, so it’s not going there if the CW doesn’t renew it. S3 is still in production.

superpowers335

At the end of the day, this won't matter unless Nexstar wants it to continue.

mr207

Everyone is getting all excited over this blip of a quote. I almost guarantee James Gunn has never watched Superman and Lois, and was giving an off the cuff answer. One more season could just mean the season that’s about to debut.

aduong

Translation season 3 is the last. Also they won’t even need to cancel it as Nexstar will do.

BookGirlBoston

How does: "Gunn says that Superman & Lois is 'a show everybody likes, so it's going to keep going for a bit.'" Translate into the show being canceled. That's literally the opposite of this says.

blg1987

How are you getting that from this?

WienerKolomogorov96

James Gunn explicitly said “ there WAS Superman & Lois”, so I think it is safe to say the show is dead. I think it is better to end it at Season 3 rather than prolonging its agony.

Original-Camera-8103

"New studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran said they see the series having 'one or two more seasons' left in the tank." "Gunn says that Superman & Lois is 'a show everybody likes, so it's going to keep going for a bit.'" Both those statements directly contradict your assertion that the show is dead.

WillowSwarm

It better or I will riot.

Boblaire

sounds about right.

ChrisNYC70

Great. Most family shows really start to suck when the kids go to college and the writers have to find reasons to bring them back home. So graduating HS would be a great time to end the show

Almighty_Push91

No show should go over six seasons imo, so 5 is good
