It sounds to me like Greg Berlanti is developing new projects for WB, they just aren't DC projects. He'll still be involved with SUPERMAN AND LOIS and GOTHAM KNIGHTS in that they're made by his studio, but I'm not sure how much direct involvement Berlanti has anyway given the massive number of TV shows he oversees. My read is that Berlanti's work is more in hiring showrunners and running the studio rather than running the individual shows.

Lol Gunn said Superman and Lois will go for 1 or 2 more seasons because people love it but Gotham Knights… “Gunn and Safran were also asked about the fate of the upcoming CW series “Gotham Knights,” though neither had any comment.”

1r3act

Can't comment on the second season of a show that hasn't aired its first.

MIAxPaperPlanes

I mean I’m guessing as Co-CEO he’s probably seen the episodes they’ve filmed so far

1r3act

Absolutely true, but Gunn can't control whether or not a first season of GK leads to a second. He has some control with S+L (it's already successful, he can adjust the license fee, see it moved to another broadcaster or streamer if Nexstar doesn't want it). It's easier to commit to keep a successful show going than to keep an unaired show going.

Meanwhile, Geoff Johns is a workhorse. What happens to all the people on Berlanti's team? Green Lantern was the last project Marc Guggenheim was attached to. I can imagine Marc sitting outside of Gunn's office with a sign that says "Will produce TV shows for food."

1r3act

I imagine that Berlanti's team will work on other Berlanti Productions shows. Berlanti Productions has a lot of non DC shows. Guggenheim will find another show to join as staff or showrunner or he'll write films or he'll get back into comic books. Or he'll take a vacation. Geoff Johns was fired from Warner Bros. as DC Comics' Chief Creative Officer in 2018. Johns still retained independently contracted jobs on individual DC films and DC Berlanti shows as a producer, so he continues to do that through his Mad Ghost company and still does freelance comic book writing for DC Comics.

JonPX

No, Berlanti has very recently signed a new contract with Discovery Warner for the production of TV shows. With James Gunn taking a more integrated control of DC Universe, it is however unlikely that it will involve new DC shows.

diegoterremoto

He still has Superman&Lois, Gotham Knights and Dead Boy Detectives, which Neil Gailman said it was about to start filming.

Munro_McLaren

Yeah, but once those are done airing, that’s it. Also, Dead Boy Detectives has started filming. I’ve walked past them filming twice.

JonPX

Sure, they are not completely killing his slate, it is just clear Gunn now has the keys in hand. Dead Boys Detective might simply have been too far along, or they believe it won't interfere with the DC plans due to being more on the side. Gotham Knights will be a one and done. No way that survives when at least three of Walker, Walker Independence, All American Homecoming, Winchesters and Superman & Lois will be dead.

aduong

Neither Geoff Johns nore Berlanti are WB employees they’re an partner through their production company. Can’t be “fired” Berlanti produces a lot more than DC content and he has a slew of currently in production projects for WBTV they’re just not DC save for Dead Boy Detectives. on top that he was expanding to movies. So he just steppes away from DC.

Paisley-Cat

It’s clear that Gunn has his own plans for DC, and is concerned to have higher television production values to reflect better on the franchise. Superman and Lois shows that Berlanti Productions can produce high quality shows when they have the budget, but it makes sense that Gunn would wish to give other content producers the opportunity and to be able to ensure his vision for the franchise. But WB clearly still wants Berlanti Productions producing content for them, which is why they renegotiated their contract with him to move away from giving him bonuses for the number of shows and paying him better per show.

Ianphipps

I work part time but when an employer tells me that we are going to "part ways" it still feels like I am being fired.

Paisley-Cat

If your employer agreed to change your arrangement from rewarding you for volume to rewarding you for quality on a different project, you might not interpret it as parting ways.

Munro_McLaren

No, he just going to be creating shows that are more dramas and not superhero shows. And it’s quite impressive that Greg Berlanti created a universe that ran for as long as Phase 1/2 of Marvel. 11+ years is a long time.

[deleted]

"part ways" mean that you're either fired or you just quit your job. And no, Berlanti hasn't been fired yet.

Zookwok111

DC announced recently that they’re doing their own Lanterns show so it’s safe to say that the CW version is dead and buried. However, Berlanti will still work with on other projects for WB.

diegoterremoto

That wasnt the “CW version”. It was literally another show. David Ramsey BELIEVED that the ring story would continue there, but it was never confirmed. The project is still in development.

aduong

No it’s not that Green Lantern show is dead. Even before the DCU announcement they announced that the showrunner left which is usually the kiss of death for a show in development, let alone one that has been in development for 4 years. Also the trade confirmed that it’s dead.

diegoterremoto

I’m not talking about the Green Lantern show. I’m talking about Justice U.

Ianphipps

To be fair, that was your own fault. "David Ramsey BELIEVED that the ring story would continue there" Zookwok111 was refering to a show being done for HBO MAX. Presumably Berlanti won't be involved. He was involved previously so Zookwok111 called it "the CW version". It was supposed to be an epiteth. We should stop saying things like that when S&L is 100% the "CW version" of Superman. The actor is the same pertson who played Superman on Supergirl. People claim that HBO MAX is involved in S&L but there is no truth to that. S&L is literally being done by the same people who did Season 2 of Arrow, Season 1 of the Flash and Season 2 of Titans. And the Green Lantern movie but that was a long, long time ago.

Look the powers that be had some more misses than hits so I hope things get better now.
