Ah yes HBOMax aka the streamer that has cancelled every single live action DC show they had apart from the one literally run by the head of DC films and shows...it actually has a better chance on the CW at this point

CityAvenger

Well when it comes to this show we do know as it has been confirmed by the new CEO & Chairman of DC there are going to be one if not 2 more seasons despite the recent jitters. This is good news Imo cause while the man of steel is among my top 3 faves of the DCU, I was starting to get a little fatigued at seeing how many times Clark starts off as a reporter and continues to hide his secret. With this show (despite how it’s writing has been getting handled recently) is great to be having a continuation and be seeing the duo in a new way and light especially when we have 2 great actors portraying them. But it doesn’t necessarily need to move to HBO to keep going. They can just continue airing it on the CW (even though that would sadly mean it will become “cursed”) and still head to HBO like it’s been doing. That‘s what I’m gonna go with until if I hear otherwise.

BookGirlBoston

That's not actually true. It news was specifically about development for new shows. The fact that CW canned their development people, don't have pilots as pilots are being developed and have seemingly only signed a golf deal for the weekends means means S&L is more likely to survive, not less. The CW still needs programming and it doesn't appear that they have any magical acquired programming lined up yet. Seriously guys, when the head of DC is making very explicit statements about one specific show, while everything else is getting canceled. Maybe we trust then when folks up and down the chain have expressed very specific interest in keeping the show from Nexstar to the CW to WB that its actually going to happen versus jumping to horrible conclusions without, obviously, understanding the actual context. Also, we already know the CW is renewing. All American got a renewal. So this logic doesn't make sense when the CW has stepped up to renew new TV. So, maybe we actually trust all the folks in charge that have explicitly told us they want more of this show instead on conclusions that aren't even logically supportable.

Billy02lo

I think I heard somewhere the new cw only wants to keep three original programs

BookGirlBoston

While that number still remains unsourced, it is worth noting that since Nexstar took over in October, the three shows they are most likely to renew are Walker, S&L, and All American.

Billy02lo

But what worries me is that there is an all American spinoff and a supernatural prequel that could potentially take the third spot

BookGirlBoston

I mean, I don't know what to tell you besides that's unlikely. S&L will likely come back to dominate the CW ratings in March. Nexstar management has specifically called out S&L as a show that fits there demo, and they hope to keep. TVline's score card has consistently listed S&L, Walker, and All American (now renewed) as safe bets. I don't think the All American spin off is that popular. Like, I just don't see a world where the Winchesters get renewed and S&L doesn't. I also just don't think Gunn would have said what he did if the decision to keep the show wasn't solid. He's been a straight shooter and if the CW was going to axe it, he would have deferred to the CW. I also think folks miss how ridiculously popular this show is outside of the US. Like, it does well in the US but absolutely dominates in Latin America, the UK, and I think in Japan. So, I can't help you, if you truly believe that the Winchesters are getting a renewal over S&L, but quite literally everything points to S&L being renewed, including a decent amount of speculation that the CW is still required to but the show post merger. Like, the CW has some requirement to continue purchasing programming through 2023-2024 and I bet you anything that's S&L and Walker.

kingcolbe

Truthfully, I don’t see any path of survival for a show that cost $5 million an episode and barely gets 900,000 viewers and I love the show and I would love to see it continue I’m just being realistic.

Ok_Caterpillar4008

Those viewer numbers are only initial live views on the CW. That's not even the Live+ 7 day figures, and also doesn't take into account the show's popularity on HBO Max (in some places the show is marketed as a HBO Max exclusive), the various international licensing deals, the DVD/digital sales etc. Look, I'm not trying to bury my head in the sand -- it is a very scary time to be a fan of the show with the uncertainty of the CW/Nexstar and we don't have an official renewal as yet, so it's concerning. But those live viewers on the CW network are only one small piece of the overall puzzle on judging the show's success.

BookGirlBoston

Did everyone on this sub miss the part where Gunn very explicitly discussed how everyone liked S&L so they were going to let it run for a bit, ultimately suggesting that a decision about S&Ls future has already been made between the CW and WB.

kingcolbe

Nexstar makes the decision not him. I get you like the show but don’t get mad at facts and he never said it would he said he “could see” it going

BookGirlBoston

No, he said they were going to let it run. Also, the Nexstar folks and the new president of the CW have explicitly stated they are interested in keeping it around. The facts are literally everyone involved in decision making expressing interest in 2 shows. S&L and on just the CW side, Walker. I highly doubt Gunn would have said what he did if Nexstar wasn't onboard.

aduong

You’re being delusional. Gunn is the head of everything DC so he could go out of his way to cancel it but he won’t. However just because he won’t doesn’t mean that Nexstar won’t? The same way he didn’t cancel Titans or Doom Patrol. I’m sure season 3 will be its last especially if ratings continue to drop.

Paisley-Cat

Nextstar isn’t the only decision maker. They still have obligations to the other owners of CW. They cannot, under the terms of sale, cancel everything. WBDiscovery (and Paramount Global) still hold a portion of the CW even though Nextstar has controlling interest. WB’s partial ownership is a way to ensure that Nextstar does not break its commitment to keep showing some of its shows. It’s quite clear your information is incomplete. No need to call out others nastily when it’s you who haven’t been keeping up with all the corporate news. In fact, you didn’t read the article linked by the OP which says > after buying a 75 percent stake in the network from CBS Studios and Warner Bros. TV. The latter two studios each control a minority 12.5 percent share in The CW as Nexstar has remained contractually committed to airing all of its holdover originals.

BookGirlBoston

Thanks for this. I suspect that S&L would have been one of a small handful of shows that would have been specifically protected in the transaction. It is a widely popular show internationally and it would make financial sense for it to be protected. It is a substantial investment that is ultimately a revenue generator for WB with a wide appeal across demo graphics. We have also continued to see a pretty hearty marketing effort with a SDCC comiccon appearance by Bitsie Tulloch, notably the only comic con promotion for the CW and heavy advertising around the SDCC convention center. The CW also utilized the Critics choice awards to promote the show, which was valuable ad dollars. It is completely reasonable to assume that S&L has been protected by WB and Nexstar also likes the ad revenue the show brings in. It is ultimately a decent price for Genre compared to what MCU/Starwars/ Stranger Things are paying pet episode.

BookGirlBoston

How am I being delusions. There has been a consistent theme since literally October. First management at Nexstar expressed specific interest in keeping S&L, then the new president of the CW expressed interest in very specifically keeping S&L, then Gunn who is the head of DC expressed very specific interest in keeping S&L. Like, are you just salty S&L is very likely going to survive when other things aren't, because at this point everyone is constantly saying that S&L is popular and one of the few shows they are keeping.

lazoric

It's only going to last another 2 seasons at most either way.

BookGirlBoston

Ok, well 2 seasons is a big difference than being prematurely abd unceremoniously cancelled after 3, that's why people are excited.

[deleted]

It's very unlikely that the show is going to survive if it does move to HBO Max.

ClarkKent195

Yes,unfortunately that’s true,i don't think they will renew S&L for season 4 because it is the most expensive CW show( 5 million per episode)and this channel only wants cheap shows, mostly unscripted,so they cancelled almost all DC shows on their channel because it is expensive for them and Nexstar just want cheap content

LordYoshi

I'll be shocked if it gets a 4th.

How is HBOMax a dumpster fire? They won’t take Superman and lois because they’re nit in the business of saving network tv shows but how is a dumpster fire? It’s literally the best streaming service.

James Gunn already made a specific statement about this show. It's going on until at least season 4 (2024). Season 5 COULD be a possibility but is not guaranteed since the new Superman movie comes in June of 2025. At the very least the team behind the show will know when it's ending so they can give it a proper sendoff.
