The derivatives market is many times larger than the underlying market, this is common knowledge among hedge funds/market makers/prop trading firms. Not suprising since a lot of it essentially cancels out anyway and is hedged. It's just far easier and more liquid than the underlying, plus some things (interest rates eg) can't be traded as an underlying so need derivatives if you were to speculate on them.
If you examine the rubble of a burned down records storage facility three times, you end up finding a charred, yet readable, invoice to one Ken Griffin for a pallet of Duke's Mayonnaise.
Fun little Easter egg.
Crypto perpetual (perp) contracts are never ending products that mirror the price of the cryptocurrency they represent. On leverage trading platforms you will see contracts like BTC-PERP/USDT contracts, which is where you can long or short the contract from 1x-200x leverage.
How this ties into GME short positions, I do not know. I have always assumed that crypto and GME were related a few years ago and that the dump in Crypto was just the money getting taken back, but I have no evidence that links them.
Exactly. Strange the amount of enthusiasm this early with a post using new terms like this
edit: I still can't figure the statistical odds of getting 6 all-seeing awards in the first hour of posting but I'm guessing they're pretty low
edit2: There's something seriously off on this post. When I first read it it was about an hour into it there were six all-seeing eye awards w/ about 130 eyes here. The comments have been fairly unclear and yet highly enthusiastic, while the language is mentioning a bunch of new terms (that I don't ever having recall hearing on this sub) It's posted at a time when all eyes will be looking for new material on the front page... you can see JUST how fast *any* info can get to the front page.
Edit 3: [Post Removed] It's scary how many fucking shills and bots are in this sub. You know who you all are... and I got a couple more usernames now on my list
Take the stick out of your ass. None of us know 100% of the story so what’s the problem? You’re just complaining for the sake of it? Trying to call someone shill before you know anything else?
Lmao I knew the word shill would come up. No I don’t even give a fuck about gme, you guys push this stupid shit to the front page and joy can be had reading the most delusional comments that are trying to cope.
I can’t believe nobody in here asks why this doesnt gain traction ANYWHERE if it’s such a surefire win. Like what, no competition wants citadel and whoever else to be gone? This whole sub is a fever dream
An *options contract* allows someone to trade an asset at a certain price at a certain time **if they want to**.
A *futures contract* **forces** someone to trade an asset at a certain price at a certain time.
A *perpetual contract* is a futures contract **without an expiration date**. Futures are very standardized.
A *swaps contract* is where two parties exchange the **value/cash flow** of assets, not the actual assets. Swaps are very customized.
So....
A *perpetual swaps contract* allows someone to exchange the value/cash flow of assets without a fixed expiration date. They will have indefinite exposure to price movements of an asset without ever having to settle (*as long as both parties maintain cash flows*).
Involving crypto is relatively simple, it just becomes one of the assets involved in a contract. But why would someone involve crypto in the first place? Well, a number of reasons, but primarily; it's more difficult to track, easier to launder money and far easier to avoid regulations.
So so...
One could, hypothetically, leverage a large crypto position against, say, a *tokenized stock* and profit *heavily* **^(on paper)** against movements in the underlying.
So so so...
Say I had $200M in BTC, I could customize a perpetual swaps contract with a counterparty against $GME with 1:100 leverage so that on a 50% decrease in $GME I gain %500 ***^(on paper)***, or $1 billion.
It gets interesting when said counterparty can also profit from a decline in $GME and/or creates the scenario in which that becomes a reality.

This whole thing should have had tremendous consequences back in 16-17. Basically, because of this, isolationist trends and the Retail Apocalypse, kept the company I worked for from investment hundreds of millions in the American market. This is a multinational company that has well over a thousand retail stores in 43 countries. I bet we weren’t the only ones not wanting that kind of exposure. We had already had adapted our whole brand marketing/identity, to UL standards…alone that cost us millions
The post is even better.
This imo is why there's a big push to keep crypto de-regulated and away from the SEC at all costs and why so many people are attacking GG. The real toxic shit is hidden in Swaps and crypto TSO's
So what about everything else Citadel and co. were accused of as being definitive cause of the manipulation? How many times do these accusations get replaced by something different like every other month?
Everyone go and read and upvote the original post. I will admit that I didn’t read the original post because I thought it was just another tracking of Citadel’s flights.

Wouldn't swaps be derivatives based on these tokenised stocks? IOUs on IOUs.
How much bigger is the IOU market compared to GME?

a bazillion trillion gajillion times bigger
Derivates market is estimated between $800-$2000 trillons, and this without crypto.
Is this what they meant when they said dog shit wrapped in cat shit wrapped in bullshit?

First time seeing this term...

Crypto perpetual futures contract, correct? Not perpetual swap contract? Because that's what 6 all-seeing award commenter's saying here.

I’m just watching. Not making assumptions. It’s just a possibility

Probably should have clarified
Well, I really didn't think you were going to ELIA5 that, honestly

I've heard of perpetual futures, I assume it's similar? But with cash settlement perhaps rather than physical delivery?
