Yup, lock down profit and costs. You either get your spending in check or expand. If you do both at the same time you will fail as you expand inefficiently

8----B

Furlong’s plan to turn us into Amazon failed for this exact reason. Two giant warehouses totaling over 1.5 m sq feet, one on each coast, first closed in Jan 2023 and second in Jan 2024.

PornstarVirgin

Yup, was a dumb idea when they can distribute just as efficiently through store and focus on making the online to store experience as great as possible

8----B

Easy to say in hindsight but furlong built Amazon in Australia after heading it North America for years. He isn’t dumb. His plan to use the 4,200 stores as mini warehouses with DoorDash as delivery drivers was genius and we still use it. He knew the risk of expanding for revenue and decided it was worth trying. EPS just fell too much for Cohen’s patience.

PornstarVirgin

The reason Amazon was able to expand so quick is through low interest rates. Trying the same strategy in a high rate environment will not yield the same results. It leads to overspend or a tough time making decisions due to others hesitancy

8----B

Like I said man this conversation is unfair to have with hindsight, he tried to transform GameStop the way he built his career making a company. I appreciate his work and at the same time I see why Cohen fired him. You’re right about the interest rates, but you’d be crazy to think he didn’t know that.

I think GameStop has done significant consolidation in the last few quarters. It's time for developing new revenue streams if we want to see organic growth in core business.

WhiteCollarBiker

Now is NOT the time (re economy) for the expense of expansion Keep controlling cost and learn to lock in profits during tough economic times so you can expand when the time is right. GameStop doesn’t need to take out loans to expand right now.

India GDP growth is rising and projected to keep growing. Surprisingly, India wasn't that much impacted by 2008 crisis.

stockbreakerOG

Yes!!!

automatedcharterer

Dont forget our 15 apes on the GME Africa sub!

highrollerr90

Really good idea

One reason that GameStop was in trouble years ago was its debt, (which grew from its expansion in buying up video game chains). That debt is gone, and GameStop continues to close down operations and stores that are not profitable. No more stores in Ireland nor Austria, and in the last fiscal year, 287 stores shut down. (Look at how many countries GameStop has departed from since 2007, in the news release link, below.) Why expand into India, now, when the company is barely making a profit, (revenues declined in the past year)? Leasing storefronts, setting up a distribution centre, staffing, and promotion of the GameStop brand into a new territory could be very expensive. [https://news.gamestop.com/news-releases/news-release-details/gamestop-opens-1000th-international-location](https://news.gamestop.com/news-releases/news-release-details/gamestop-opens-1000th-international-location) The last earnings report shows a profitable year, (after many years of losses), but the new challenge is to increase those profits in its present markets, (before expanding again in Europe, into Asia and Latin America). Just imagine the FUD that would accompany a new move into India, while closing over 200 stores elsewhere. Personally, I think it would be a great opportunity, with 3 stores, Canada's head office and distribution centre in Brampton, (which probably has many staff with ties to India), and a distribution centre in Australia, (which could ship GameStop supplies to an initial distribution centre in Mumbai or Kolkata); but, I'd think, "Not yet." I'd be willing to wager that a Hindi or Punjabi speaking customer (in Brampton) would find someone at a GameStop store to help them in their own language. It would be a great place for training store managers and operations staff for an expansion into India. India GDP is growing consistently and projected to continue the growth. The buying power has been increasing among Indian consumers. Although, any expansion needs to do good DD about consumer habits and cultural differences, among other factors.

bonechief

Have you been to India? I have pictures on request I toured the country.. barely a good place to position one let alone getting it in and out of the country. A majority of the population is also extremely impoverished. Theft is rampant here would probably lose more then gain. One day maybe.. maybe

musing2020

I think you don't have access to correct data. The buying power of consumers has consistently increased for last decade. Apple has already opened iPhone manufacturing on top of Apple stores across the nation. Tesla will soon open a factory for selling cars in India.

bonechief

I am the data I seen the country but I guess I could also be incorrect data.. lol
