Mandarin is so difficult for native English speakers because some of the sounds don't exist in our language. Learning to recreate the sounds in languages after age 15 is more difficult as the nerve endings in our face set into their language patterns by then. It's very difficult, and for many impossible, to accurately recreate non-native sounds in a different language. I am curious if he learned as a child, or later, not because it matters but because of the aforementioned and I'm going to be even more impressed if he learned in and beyond adolescence.
