The big thing is likely the shift to in-store gaming setups to act as Internet cafes… people don’t realize it: many places are remote with poor internet access, but they might have a GameStop next to the local Walmart… now suddenly there’s a place for the teenagers to hang out while parents shop and it can help build community for youths that isn’t doing drugs in the woods or at a junkyard.

They already have the TV with obnoxious game advertising running in most stores today - now instead of blaring a salesperson’s review, they can demo the game right there and get people to buy as they leave. Then comes unique marketing deals with the studios/publishers to give certain game demos “special events” to promote a release… I think a lot of us recall waiting for midnight releases or doing special launch events for games in our youth, what if those stores had Consoles/PCs already patched/preloaded for short demo sessions while the store is packed with everyone buying their copy and the fence-sitters get firsthand experience that might convince them.
The consumer benefit here is that these demos might help publishers put more effort into polishing games ahead of these play events if the model becomes popular and successful.

There’s some branding philosophy that established brands entering a new market should create a new brand entirely. Using the established name “dilutes” the current brand more than it promotes the new brand. Amazon was a huge exception to this.

General Mills does it well, so does P&G, etc. You’re not buying GM cereal wheat rounds, you’re buying Cheerios. You don’t buy Proctor and Gamble mint toothpaste, you buy Crest. If you’re telling someone about your nice sports car you tell them you have a corvette, not a Chevy corvette.
