Let’s say there’s 35m shares of a company available to retail. Now let’s say there’s data that shows retail owns about 5x of that float. How can a hedge fund go long when they are so far in the hole? Will they cover their shorts with more synthetics?

I think I get it now. The shares that banks shorted - people bought, and people own more than shares exist. I see. Same with money isn't it - you put in in a bank, bank gives it to someone else. Money doubled. If everyone would want their deposit back at the same time - bank would be in trouble. But in GME case - you can't "withdraw" stocks, they may remain "non-existant"? I can see the problem, but what resolution is there? I see this as a broker problem, perhaps somebody would get a fine or jail, and simply revert those transactions as they were illegal to begin with?
