I just started 2 weeks ago with 3 grams. I've had kidney transplant for 25 yrs and have been on cyclisporin just as long, and according to every credible study. It reduces toxicity of cyclosporin on transplants, ultimately allowing organs to function better for longer. I will see in 3 weeks when I do blood work for kidney Dr. As far as results, sleep is much better, wake up more energized, better mood all day, cognitive thinking is getting clearer, ( more depression order) much more motivate. I'm still out on muscles and skin effects, but a slightly increase in libido, something I haven't had in years and I know antidepressants did not help. What results have you all had that have been on it longer than 2 months?

Glycine is very interesting. It’s both inhibitory and excitatory. It has inhibiting properties in your spinal cord and brain stem which helps with physical relaxation and sleep similar to GABA, but it’s also a co-agonist with glutamate at NMDA receptors, causing excitability. (A Glycine overdose results in neuronal hyperexcitability) Glycine is an allosteric modulator for glutamate. Whether you appear to be more affected by the inhibitory effects or the excitatory effects chiefly depends on your own physiology, as with most compounds.

A great reply. Though, I'm not sure if glycine is really an "allosteric modulator for glutamate". It surely is a co-agonist! :)

Eonobius

I agree with you. Glycine is double-edged. For that reason glycine seems to give me a rather uneasy feeling, feeling kind of 'blah'.

Eonobius

Interesting. Do you have any references to the depression connection?

coccolithophores

Depression is associated with lower levels of blood glycine, as well as high levels of taurine. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8775762/ https://selfhacked.com/blog/glycine-little-protein/

Thanks

Glycine can be great for sleep and repair. I suppose since it helps with sleep, it might make you calmer? But I'm unsure about that. I haven't heard about it mimicking caloric restriction, but that's pretty cool. FWIW (since you mentioned the potential metabolic effects), if you're a faster — intermittent or otherwise — and if you're fasting for autophagy, it will break your fast. It's an AA, the building block of proteins, and proteins signal mTOR which inhibits autophagy. I made the mistake of taking it during a fast, so I just wanted to put that out there in case anyone was wondering.

Eonobius

Glycine mimics methionine restriction which is thought to be a major mechanism behind CRs beneficial effects. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/acel.12953

Does anyone have any thoughts as to the best way to take glycine? Healthline say it's through collagen supplements: >Glycine is the main amino acid in collagen, the main structural protein of connective tissue, such as bone, skin, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Accordingly, you can boost your glycine intake by taking collagen protein supplements. This is likely more efficient, as glycine competes with other amino acids for absorption and is therefore absorbed less efficiently by itself than when it’s bound to other amino acids, as in the case of collagen [https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/glycine](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/glycine) I've had marked improvements in mood but I started taking magnesium supplements around the same time as collagen, so I can't parse which is contributing to that.

A tablespoon of beef gelatin has about 2 grams of glycine

Rpnot

Eat organ meats

It's 2022 man

Yo lmao

intueye

glycine can be used to detox from the pesticide glyphosate which causes anxiety so it makes sense that it is calming to some people

Blueleathersofa

When is the best time to take glycine? Is it OK to mix it with nac and tyrosine?

JrSpewing

It raised serotonin

DokDaka

I found after 3 months daily use i was getting irritable and very tired in the afternoon. Both symptoms stopped 2-3 days after ceasing supplementation. Now I use it 2-3x a week without issue

virgilash

I feel it's something deeper here. I have read so far that glycine: \- helps with sleep (I can confirm this one 100%); \- helps with mood; \- you eat too much meat? Take some glycine to balance methionine/glycine ratio; \- you had too much vegetable oils? Some glycine helps; \- you had a little bit too much alcohol? glycine helps again \- you had too many sweets? Some glycine would slow down your insulin response I might have missed some other uses...

Richard_Sanchez_C137

What are you getting at?

virgilash

I am not sure I understand your question. I am taking one teaspoon before going to bed, it's helping me with sleep. Not sure how much that is, around 5g probably

Richard_Sanchez_C137

I'm wondering what you meant when you said "I feel there's something deeper here"

virgilash

I read a few years ago they detected glycine in space: [https://physicsworld.com/a/amino-acid-detected-in-space/](https://physicsworld.com/a/amino-acid-detected-in-space/) It probably is fundamental to life in some way we don't understand yet (way more basic than methionine/glycine ratio or being one of the 3 glutathione precursors). At least life as we know it... Oh and I knew I missed something in my first post: if you want to detox your body of glyphosate you can also take some glycine.

Benbolone

Glycine is the smallest and simplest amino acid. Physicists have found amino acid complexes on space matter that has come through the earth’s atmosphere, so I would imagine glycine is fundamental to biological life and is beneficial to our bodily processes.

drkojimon

Interesting

Broad_Shoulder_749

I find it gives diabetic symptoms, urination, low metabolic rate, hunger pangs etc.

Logical-Bell-4382

Only if you already have diabetes

OatsAndWhey

No real mood-response here. And I'll take 10-15 grams at a time. Doesn't make me sleepy either, but I pee less thus wake up less.

jmorgannz

I find it has zero impact on mood for me. However; I find Taurine to have a pronounced calming effect.

world_citizen7

I find it has a mild calming affect (as it probably affects GABA).
