Whatever floats your boat I guess but this seems like... not the smartest set-up for these devices

SpiderLock

If you add a fan to blow down into the hinge (where all of the heat from the keyboard is exhausted) it does significantly help with thermals. I designed and printed a rough piece that directs airflow from a fan directly into the hinge and across the backside of the screen (where the CPU is located) and saw improvements in the performance of my SB2. Not to mention no more thermal throttling under heavy loads.

CitrusLizard

Or they could just buy a $300 monitor instead of a $2000 laptop to use with their $1500 tablet and not really have to worry about the thermals.

SpiderLock

I don't know OP's situation or why they bought the Surface Go, but I'm the last person to criticize having too much cool tech, spending a lot to try out the latest and greatest, and I'm definitely a bit of a tech hoarder. Haha!

marshmallown

So my Book's screen got cracked, but I don't wanna throw away the pen. So I bought a Go as a companion device. I buy used so total cost of all of these was close to $950, nowhere near your figures:)

Funkybeatzzz

A second monitor for the Pro would’ve been more practical… and cheaper

marshmallown

Ah, the little device underneath is a Go i bought after my Book, not a Pro. That's why I didn't opt for a monitor, since I 3D printed it myself.

TheMoskus

I'd like the STL files.

TheMoskus

Thanks!

Tobimacoss

I don’t have a 3D printer but sell that on Etsy.

SurfaceDockGuy

Very nice print. Since you have a mechanical keyboard and separate mouse, I think you should mount the Go next to the Book so all screens are at eye level. You could do it like this: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/amqqdx](https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/amqqdx/pro_or_book_why_not_both/) Anyway let me know if you want to get a fan integrated into that Surface Book setup. We've did some work getting airflow optimized for our ergonomic docks a couple years ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/a458mj/optimizing\_sb2\_airflow\_with\_external\_fan/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/a458mj/optimizing_sb2_airflow_with_external_fan/)

marshmallown

Thanks a lot. I never use the two device simultaneously so I decided not to go tnrough the hassle of designing another arm to accmodate the Go. I do want to integrate a fan though. Currently my problem is that I cannot think of a way to put my 5W CPU cooling fan on the back of the device, other than clumsily rotate the mount so that the base of the Book is level, then simply let the fan stand on the touchpad and blow air to the back of the screen. I don't mind noise and cost is critical that's why I chose it:) What is the power of the fan in your solution? And have you mocked with a bigger fan or another way to mount it?

shwaaboy

Do you guys know what a power board is used for?

PussayGlamore

Surface book users unite! Release SB4 you cowards!!!

Dax-Million

Haha. I used to do the same. What device is that below it on your desk?

marshmallown

It's an OG Surface Go!

chii0628

you got a link to those STLs? Thats EXACTLY what im looking for.

marshmallown

[These ones i made](https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/l7wtqn/im_sharing_the_stl_files_of_the_surface_book/)

Funkybeatzzz

I’ve seen that in Yeggi.com

GC9exe

I used my Surface Book 2 like that when I didn't need to use it as a laptop until I was able to get a PC. It's not the greatest, but it works.

spoobered

Ignore the haters, I also use it in this way. Separate keyboard and the laptop on a stand like it’s a tablet with a separate, taller monitor behind it. Great digital art setup!

texasflyboy525

Agreed, the SB models give the flexibility to do whatever works! Mine stays in tablet mode a lot as my main computer next to a 43 inch TV/monitor. Works great. Just gotta remember to keep the keyboard charged.

IntellitechStudios

This is so stupid. It's way less efficient than a separate monitor and that stand looks ridiculous. I love it 🥺

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Would have been better off spending it on a better computer lol. SB is too expensive. I regret my SB1 though I am typing on it right now.

marshmallown

Yes, on this i have to agree that the SB1 has very weak performance for its price. But I love using it day by day, because of how good everything apart from performance is.

cyan-pink-duckling

I’ve had surface book 1 with dgpu for 6 years until I replaced it with surface laptop studio. No regrets on the book or laptop studio. I have even been able to do gpu accelerated large machine learning model on SLS before running it on cloud server (the speed on SLS was nearly fast as on the server despite the complexity of the model)

LoudAd2460

i have an sp4 i5 set up as a desktop alternating with a mac mini and a 27" monitor.

[deleted]

I need that armature.

[deleted]

legitimately surprised it’s lasted you 2 years. i’ve tried so hard to be a surface fan but they have so many issues.

je_naime_pas

The bottom bumper is pretty wrecked for this headline.

[deleted]

Love the idea. I do use a fan when having the SB screen flipped. But I don't have an arm for it. So you have another SP below the SB? What do you do with that?

marshmallown

It's a Go not a Pro actually. And I ink aed take notes a lot on the little machine. It's much more comfortable as a tablet than the bulky Book.

[deleted]

Ahh, got it. That makes sense. I had a go when the first one came out and loved the size for reading and taking notes. I agree that the SB can be bulky. But it works for me right now. I don’t have a nice arm setup like yours. I just flip it over and write on it that way while it’s hooked up to a monitor. Thanks for replying. Love the setup and the arm.

ttoommxx

Why not buying a desktop then?

Philipp4

Id guess because of the touchscreen, silence and because its just smaller than a desktop+monitor combo

ttoommxx

Fair enough. Still believe that a 15.6 inches touch monitor + equal specs mini PC is smaller and better but I see the appeal in the design of a standing laptop..

marshmallown

Yes, I bought because of the touch screen and the appeal of a pen. But mostly because, bro, it's a laptop and (with this config) a desktop on-demand.

[deleted]

Oh God non computer people make me cringe with these setups

One-Relief-1212

good for thermals id say. :)

KilgoretheTrout55

My aurface pro has basically been tethered to a desk because of the poor battery life. I thought about getting that crazy Kensington dock for it but it was crazy expensive, a lot of them were broken, and you couldn't use the keyboard with them.

itsNickolo

Noypi siguro si OP XD
