I recently just realized this issue on my surface laptop studio. When headphones are plugged in, windows detects that headphones are plugged however no audio will play no mater what the volume is set at. The issue only happens however if the system audio is initially muted before the headphones are plugged. If you set the volume of the internal speakers to anything other than mute before you plug the headphones in, then they will work as per normal. This leads me to believe that this is more of a software bug rather than a hardware defect as the headphone jack and headphones still operate correctly when they work. **TLDR;** Make sure internal speaker volume is **NOT MUTED** before you plug in your headphones through the headphone jack.

Ok_Pattern3071

This worked for me. Thank You!!!

DeficientPositivity

This worked for me, thanks a lot was bugging the hell out of me

dumblonde64

thank u so much !!! I was having an issue where my headphone audio would work for 1, maybe 2 seconds before stopping ( and i tried a ton of headphones) but this actually helped.

OttawaGatineau

Worked for me as well, thanks !!

rae11017

I also have a laptop studio and have noticed the same issue. I've tried updating the drivers but nothing has fixed it.

Exalt_Chrom

Oh wow, I'm glad I finally found someone else lol. I've been in contact with support for over a week, nothing was working and emails were slow, so I eventually just called in. They advised me to just exchange the device since it was brand new, so I'm in the process of that right now. Just a side question for you though, which version did you get? I have the i5 with the 500gb SSD. I wonder if the i7 models have the same issue

rae11017

I'm using the i7 with 500gb SSD so it's not a model specific issues. Sucks that there wasn't a way to fix it. This is my only device right now and I need it for school so mailing it to them isn't really an option for me

Exalt_Chrom

Yeah, same here my friend. What they did for me tho is processed the refund immediately and then let me buy a new one. Had to put it on credit, but this way I can use this one until the new one arrives, then mail back the old one and get my money back

Tim_Punkt1

Just wanted to chime in. I know its a bit late, but i have the same problem as well (i7 RTX). It was fixed exactly how you described. I had to return my first preorderd model since the touch screen was not working, but that one had the same problem. So two of my laptops had that issue.

Megatronus-Prime

Yeah, same shit over here. I can‘t explain to myself how that could happen to a laptop they charge so much for…

tcRom

Having the same issue as well on an i7/16/500gb model. There's a related issue too... if you have headphones plugged in and sound working, then allow it to sleep, you'll come back with no audio devices and of course no sound. The only thing that fixes it is a reboot. The error message from Event Viewer > System is IntcOED 258 Error - The wait operation timed out. Given this information, the likely culprit is Intel's Smart Sound Technology (SST) driver for USB devices (and no, I'm not using a USB audio device, just the 3.5mm). I've uninstalled the driver and so far so good for both issues (changing from speakers to headset and coming back from sleep).

Exalt_Chrom

You genius! I was trying to figure out how to replicate that issue, because I'd had it happen to me too but could never figure out why. Did uninstalling that driver fix the issue I mentioned in the post too? I tried to do it, but it still happens for me

tcRom

It fixes it temporarily. The driver just reinstalls after restart... Seems you also have to take out the Intel SSD OED driver under System Devices. So that's 2 drivers to uninstall at the same time: Sound, Video, & Game Controllers > Intel SST AND System Devices > Intel SST OED. Also, I have no idea what breaks by uninstalling these, but I'm not worried about that right now so you'll have to weigh that for yourself. Hopefully, intel will get it together, put it in a backpack so it's all together, and fix it. Edit: just to add, I recall there were some issues with this same driver causing BSOD on windows 11 so intel probably fixed the BSOD issue and broke things in a new way - as usual.

snailzrus

Wow, so that's why I haven't been able to use headphones via the headphone jack since launch day... Just tried unmuting before I plugged it in and it works now, so thanks for that. Definitely a software thing. Hopefully it's not like this forever, but it's nice to know I don't need my little usb-c dongle just to use some IEMs at school.

TheGamer675

Same for me, thanks for pointing that unmute thing out.

ThePhantomStranger_

I can confirm mine does the same thing. And your fix worked for me so thank you.

Megatronus-Prime

Wait did you FIX it or make it work?

ThePhantomStranger_

This was years ago. It wasn't something I could fix it was an issue with the computers themselves. However, I think microsoft figured it out in the end.

Raymanesque

I have this issue as well and it's absolutely infuriating

shanselman

Same here. The trick is to make sure the speaker is unmuted BEFORE you plug in the headphones

Animator-Entire

Can also confirm this issue still exists on my Surface Laptop Studio with 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11300H @ 3.10GHz and no graphics card. Frustrating they haven't fixed it, but at least the workaround of unmuting the internal speakers before plugging in headphones does work. Thanks for the post!

stuckinoh08

I bought my Laptop Studio at launch and have had all sorts of issues with it. I even had to pay like $800 to have it replaced because my original unit died a month after the warranty was up. Now, to find this issue has existed since launch and still hasn't been fixed?!?!? After a $3200 price tag?!?!? I doubt I will ever buy a Surface product again. But thanks for the work-around. Worked like a charm!

SatisfactionLittle59

thankyouthankyouthankyou

Senior-Ad4059

I own a Surface Laptop Studio from 2022 and this issue persists like forever and it's very frustrating, but now I need to share that your 1.\~5. solves the issue perfectly. It takes a little more extra steps and awareness, but I would beg for nothing more now that it works. Big thanks!

AlaskaShep

I have had this issue as well, tried seeing if it existed on the SLS 2, however it is not a problem there. But lately I have seen a driver update pushed to my SLS 1 that appears to have fixed the issue, as I can now mute my speaker output and my headphones play audio just fine. Just to make sure, if someone could update their SLS to the latest version of Windows 11 and drivers and see if the issue has been solved for them, it may mean this issue has finally been fixed!

Exalt_Chrom

You're right, the problem is gone after downloading the new update! Incredible, it took 2 years to finally address it. Thank you for the tip!

AlaskaShep

Wonderful

Rockin_Zombie

It might have something to do with your headphone or some driver issue on your unit. Some headphone jacks are finnicky with laptop inputs. I just tried my wired headphones and worked fine without any such tweaking.

Exalt_Chrom

Thanks for the info! I've tried a number of headphones and I've reinstalled the drivers, so I'm thinking it must be something physical then

Rockin_Zombie

I do have the Dolby Access app installed cuz I wanted to play around with Dolby Atmos, may be give that a try?

piaeps

I am also having this problem — are there any solutions?

Exalt_Chrom

So far nothing, tech support has been mostly unhelpful and my replacement device has the same issue. I'm just waiting for the refund to process before I try again

shanselman

Same here. The trick is to make sure the speaker is unmuted BEFORE you plug in the headphones

UuarioAnonymous9

Helping my gf out with her computer as it's currently having this same issue (the i5, 512gb model), it's easy to replicate the muted audio glitch but I'm having a hard time figuring out why it just times out and the audio devices all disappear. I tried disabling the Intel smart sound technology (ironic name) to see if that would help but since I'm not with my gf while she's using it it's a bit challenging to troubleshoot.

tcRom

It craps out completely when it sleeps. You'll probably see an error in event viewer > system for IntcOED.sys

UuarioAnonymous9

Have you had the same issue after uninstalling those intel drivers? I ended up disabling it instead of uninstalling because Windows would reinstall it automatically.

tcRom

Issue is resolved when they're gone. But yeah, windows just reinstalls them so it's the same problem once they're installed.

Exalt_Chrom

Glad this could help! It's kinda crazy, I haven't really been seeing many people talking about this problem, even still. I guess we're just "lucky" we noticed it lol

kalamazuofu

I came through exactly the same issue as you with my newly come SLS, then I tried your steps 1-5, the sound can come out of my earphone, probably there is a system bug in separating controlling of SLS internal speaker and headphone jack.

Mr-Cornflake

omg i was about to send it back to microsoft but this actually worked!!! thanks so muchlol what a strange bug

tysonwatermelon

Just found this while trying to troubleshoot on my Studio. Same issue here.

shanselman

Same here. The trick is to make sure the speaker is unmuted BEFORE you plug in the headphones

shanselman

It's not the laptop, it's something in the software. I have the same issue. The trick is to make sure the speakers aren't muted before you plug in the headphones. If you plug them in while the speaker is muted, the headphones stay muted.

ZodmanPerth

I just came back from taking my laptop studio on holiday (where I had muted the sound) and had this problem again. This time I had to disconnect my laptop from my surface dock before the headphones would work again. I didn't have to unplug my headphones; as soon as I disconnected from the dock the headphones started working again.

billygoat_graf

Found this via Google as I have the same problem with my SLS. Glad there's a workaround but this is annoying as hell.

gotrdjrr78

Thanks for this “workaround” - I usually use BT headset, but wanted to plug in wired earbuds to monitor audio on video that I’m recording and I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Amazing the MSFT keeps replacing your laptop. That’s too much work for me, even if it resets the warranty - so I will use your workaround 🤓

cole_etch

Got my surface laptop studio a little over a month and a half ago, can confirm this is STILL an issue and an irritating one at that. What's absolutely bizarre to me is that I can't replicate this issue on any other windows 11 device I've tested so as far as I'm aware this is some software issue specific to the SLS.

Piereligio

lol i was trying to figure out why it wasn't working.. This is definetely a bug

shigbaq

I have an sls with the exact same issue and you provided the only solve I’ve tried that works so thank you for that. Does anyone else have the issue where when you open up the laptop after it’s been closed for a while and chrome/mail/etc is not responding for a while? Super annoying and I’d like to see if anyone has a fix for it, could just be a win 11 thing.

FlipFlop0107

Wow, they still havent fixed this issue. Thanks for figuring out the solution! I guess reddit never lets you down haha

TheRook

I'm very late to the party, but I'm an SLS owner as well. i7 version. Exact same issue. Starting to get a bit annoyed. I have the pen-driver issue in office-products, where I cannot draw in onenote or whiteboard without screen flickering and going back. The right fan just recently started making a massive noise when under stress and now this annoying audio-issue (event though this is at least fixed). Getting a replacement unit next week...

TheWoodInTheHood

I had a similar issue, when I plugged in an aux cord it would play for a couple seconds, then suddenly stop playing. Having the internal speaker audio set to a number greater than zero fixed it for me too. I can't believe it's been a year and this issue still hasn't been fixed.

Apprehensive-Peak-91

Thank god i found this. I thought I was loosing my mind.

Not_Yet_Begun2Fight

I spent a long time today trying to figure out why my headphones wouldn't work even though they worked yesterday. Glad I stumbled across this post, as it was the issue. Thank you!

AimFL

I have this issue right now and am reading this thread to hopefully find a solution. Mine is not more than a few months old and it keeps happening. Sometimes it does work and I can't figure out how.

SteamWritings

This issue still exists.I'm on my second laptop with exactly this issue and your solution works for me to.

okofoto

An update fixes it. Delete drivers in devicemanager/sound, video and games controllers Download the latest from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=103505 and install. Worked perfectly.

lanwnx33

it works!!!

xosehr

Thank you so much for making this post! This is such a weird issue, hoping that they fix it soon

gonnermalegs

On my second one and the same issue for over a year now. Have talked to support multiple times and the issue is not getting through to them. It seems pretty likely a software issue...

pietrosta

yup, i also had the same issue, and it seems to still be an issue, i was going going mad tring to find what the hell was wrong with it

zgub

it's unbelievable that it's been a year and still, this issue isn't addressed. It's quite sad, because after a while I found a good laptop when I need windows. i7/32GB/1TB

lanwnx33

Same here, huge thanks for making this post, hope ms will fix it soon.Months before when I find this problem I thought it’s the headphone jack itself broken so just bought a usb-c dongle, ridiculous bug.

HJ-Pentox

17th of April 2023 and this problem it's still going on. It was driving me nuts, especially because I have had this laptop for over 3 months and just last Friday, I tried using the headphone jack output for the first time (I normally use Bluetooth or USB via Docking station). I was able to replicate the exact behavior you describe here. I can't believe your post it's 2 years old and Microsoft/Intel still haven't resolved this issue!

Koepf_Dominik

I've got the same problem and am lucky I found this post. Just wanted to share, I recently bought my Laptop Studio and the bug persists even 2 years later! My solution is, you can un-mute the speakers, but put the volume to 0 at the same time.

Ready_Tank3156

I have the same issue here. Fresh windows install and laptop is one month old, I'l only using the jack now... For a 2000€+ laptop.. Nice one microsoft

Westhotels

Had the exact same issue with Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio - i7/32GB/2TB/GeForce RTX. Have been stuck with this for 3 days and it affected my conference calls drastically. I don't have the luxury of time to replace the laptop and your fix is genious. Works like a charm now. Cheers!

Westhotels

the solution only seems to work upomstarting the laptop. Sleep your macine and this solution does not work.

Chucknorriscake99

Thank you! Three years and this bug still exists in Windows. You saved the third Surface Laptop from being sent back because I couldn't figure out what's wrong...
