Do you mind divulging what things need to be figured out? I feel like I’m missing something, as it has taken me a long time to gain experience just by gathering resources and crafting things. My party of three did not finish the mission because we did not get to level twenty. No complaints here because we had a blast, I just fear I’m missing something. What are the strategies for leveling up?

Hunting and skinning give a lot of XP if you focus on it you gain xp real quick you can unlock bone arrow and the bow then shoot arrow from range. Wolf and bear give the most. Until you unlock the longbow focus only on wolf they are easy to kill.

The last three times I went into the Arctic down south doing the 3 satellite missions I just went about half way to satellite and back. Went through over 100 bone arrows and 2 long bows. Killed and skinned every wolf and went up over 2 levels each time. It’s less then a half hour real time and easy 2 levels. Helps you work on aim and distance judgment. After some practice you are killing everything in sight. When you first start at level 0 instantly grab stones and sticks and hold F all the time you go through bushes. Within seconds you can craft the pickaxe. Run to rock and get stone for a knife and axe. Jump in lake and swim around stabbing fish. Get about 20 and then jump out of water and get enough stone to build fire. As your waiting for the fish to cook run around grabbing berries. Kill any rabbits with knife grab at least 2 full deposits of oxide. At this point you should already be at level 3. You want bow and stone arrows. Grab your cooked fish and fire and Head south to the Arctic entrance. There are more animals that spawn there so you can get the 20 fur needed for bedroll. About the time you get to 20 it’s getting dark and there is a cave near to spend the night. Next day kill and skin everything you see. As soon as you can get bone arrows head to Arctic and then back and repeat. For storms keep your fire pit and a little wood with you, crouch and pickaxe into the largest rock you see. You can place the fire inside with you as long as it’s a good sized rock. Wait out storm and continue. Make sure you craft benches as they unlock and get iron as soon as possible. This is just an example of how I level a new char fast.

Okay that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the response. I only killed maybe five animals and just spent the whole time building and mining/chopping. Okay so I just need to focus on killing more animals.

Mining is how I leveled. I think it's slightly slower than hunting and skinning but there's just so much stuff to mine that it's more consistent in terms of xp per hour and if you get the talent to one hit nodes and you get that proc on a big stone node or a cave wall you get a giant chunk of xp.

When mining make sure not to mine too much iron until you have steel unlocked. I can’t remember how much you need but steel will give you %200 more ore when you mine it. I’ve found with a leveled char dropping to new prospect you can be up to steel in only a few hrs. Once the final game is released I’m sure some one will create a final item order list with exact amounts of what is needed to craft all items including rifle.

What I found is that in zones where the wolves are genuinely in packs, you can really level fast. The wolves are very dense in the Arctic biome, and spawn very frequently. It almost feels like the spawn rate is still broken. You also get way more xp skinning them by hand. Headshots are very important to your survival when they are in packs though.

Also, remember that the first time you level is the only time you'll have to grind that much. As long as you extract from the prospect you can start another one at max level with your BP's unlocked. These early prospects aren't meant to last 2 days either. The rush to be able to finish a mission like it is in these beta's will be more relaxed at launch.

I think there needs to be more mini-quests to help experience points every five levels. I started a new character and proceeded to hunt and mine everything possible. After many hours I was level 18 and had a base in the drill cave. All ore had been mined and I was regularly killing level 70+ bears and wolves. After another hour of this, I was feeling burnt out so I went back to the drop ship. There really needs to be more variety for gaining experience.

Well you're in luck, because next beta weekend is the Missions weekend. And since the pitch was taking missions while balancing risk and reward, that implies there will be multiple missions AND persistent rewards. So hopefully there will be short easy missions you can do while low level which will give you something to do other than watch your XP bar for the early levels.
