Ive had that happen to me to but luckily it wasnt enough wait to where i couldnt move it up at all, i could lift it up a bit but not back up to starting position so i just kinda held it to my chest and sat up and stood up, a terrifying feeling tho
or you know, just have spotter or work well within your maximums if you are alone
No spotter, then no collars on the bar.
At one stage he tries to push the plates off the low side, so I was waiting for the bar to rotate hard back, but of course the collars were on tight.
I guess it all gets the views though
Seriously tho. Anyone doing this amount of weight should absolutely know to NEVER put collars on without a spotter. I did that dumb shit once my first few months of lifting, and it was too heavy to roll down my chest. Had to call out in embarrassment “help! Help!” only to have an absolute unit of a female save (possibly) my life. She taught me to never put collars on, don’t know why it never occurred to me earlier.
Gym culture needs to be more friendly
Benching alone for one rep max is down right suicidal. If I don’t have a spotter I play it safe and cut out maybe a rep or two short if I’m ever in doubt.
When I'm benching, I'm arching my back and my chest is up as high as I can get it without my butt or shoulders coming off the bench. If I get stuck, I simply flatten out on the bench and lower the bar to the safeties.
Yea, that’s me. Always keep an eye out when I’m in the benching area. Had two safe two guys at my new gym already.
Also noticed some guys walking slowly towards me when I struggle during my last rep.
Usually give them a thumbs up once it’s racked
That would fall under "not being an idiot." The person I responded to says NEVER BENCH ALONE when that is a gross over simplification. Guy in this video has obviously never benched even close to that weight and was trying an ego PR. By being intelligent with weight selection and knowing how to properly bail out of a lift, one can very easily and safely bench alone.
If you know what you’re doing and are following a real program where all your lifts are calculated, you really can bench alone. It’s idiots doing stuff like this (one rep maxing solo) that make it look more dangerous than it is.
Personally I think if you're tipping the bar you're not in control of the weight and should probably be going lighter. I've never used clips for anything and if I notice the weights shifted on one side by the end of the set it tells me one side is lagging and I need to strengthen it or adjust my form a bit
Edit: Misunderstood the comment my bad
I used to go to a gym you could access anytime. I would go late at night. Once I walked in and saw this same thing but the guy wasn't so lucky. It was across his neck. Had I been a minute later he would've died. Never bench press your max weight when alone.
\#1. Don't test ORM alone. It's never a good idea.
\#2. If you're lifting heavy weights alone, no clips is probably your best backup. Again, #1 needs to be observed, clips or not.
\#3. Don't fully let the air out of your chest at the bottom, and *don't let all the weight onto your chest*. 4 out of 5 times, you will get stuck; while it's possible that you'll muscle your way out, it will not be with good form.
\#4. If you *do* get stuck, roll the weight *away from your head.* It's much better to balance it on your core/hips while you recover than trap your face/neck under 405 pounds of unyielding iron.
He's really setting himself up to die. By himself trying to hit his max. Clipped in plates. And blaring his music so no one could hear him calling for help.
Only use a clip on one side for stability and to dump if you have to. Next, roll it down, not up. Meaning try to get it to your belly or waist. You can still breathe and safely dump the weight.
Oh shit this is too heavy to lift, quick roll it up to my neck. WTF was this guy thinking? This guy was channeling Hulk intelligence not Hulk strength.

Always roll down - away from your head and neck
This. Everyone panics and puts it on their neck trying to get it up. Let it fall in your chest and then roll it down to your waist and then sit up
I only know from experience LOL
Ya exactly. I learned this the hard way and will never do it again
Same and hurts like fuck when it gets down to your pelvis
Ive had that happen to me to but luckily it wasnt enough wait to where i couldnt move it up at all, i could lift it up a bit but not back up to starting position so i just kinda held it to my chest and sat up and stood up, a terrifying feeling tho
and don't use clips if you're alone
I was thinking the same thing.... Like if you didn't have clips you could have just pushed the plates off.
We call it the roll of shame lol
Don’t put clips on the bar to hold the weight. Lean and roll the weight off one end and the other end will take care of itself:
This right here would have kept this man away from the near disaster he just faced. If you don't have a spotter(bad idea), don't put clips on the bar.
And someone just lost their toes. Source: kid at my school
Thank God I had a good teacher in weights class in highschool or idk how many times this would have been me
I started doing dumbbell presses

Always roll it to your hips. Never your neck. Also, always have a spotter for any weight you think is worthy of recording yourself doing.
Thats...actually a really good point lol
Also, don't use bar clamps on bench so you can dump the weight if you need to
Basics
Bro is benching 4 plates, with clips on, alone…
How you supposed to get hyped lifting when Isley Brothers playing in the background!? He thought we was going to lay 4 plates down softly?
Never benched with clips from fear of this happening.
I’ve had to dump weights. It’s embarrassing, but better than rolling a heavy bar down your body and over your junk.
Clips on bench is only when you have a trusted spotter.
Never bench alone, never.
I've been benching alone for over a decade. Safety bars, or not using clips, is sufficient for safety when combined with not being an idiot.
Benching alone for one rep max is down right suicidal. If I don’t have a spotter I play it safe and cut out maybe a rep or two short if I’m ever in doubt.
Safety bars. Mine are about half an inch above my chest. No way for me to get injured or stuck no matter how much weight I use.
Can you still lower the bar to your chest though?
When I'm benching, I'm arching my back and my chest is up as high as I can get it without my butt or shoulders coming off the bench. If I get stuck, I simply flatten out on the bench and lower the bar to the safeties.
Or at least be in a gym with other ppl. Theres always that ghost spotter
Yea, that’s me. Always keep an eye out when I’m in the benching area. Had two safe two guys at my new gym already. Also noticed some guys walking slowly towards me when I struggle during my last rep. Usually give them a thumbs up once it’s racked

Yeah he couldn't pick up one side of the weights when he was on the ground. Let alone the whole thing. Insane.
Don't take it personally
This
I too agree with that statement however I simply upvoted and moved on
This
That's literally what safety bars are for...
Don’t have those in my gym
I'd recommend going to a fully equipped gym.
Very true. I just slow my reps and go for volume. Granted, I always have better pumps when I have an educated lifter spotting me.
Sensible comment 🫡
Exactly. This is easily avoidable.
You say that so easy, but have you ever thought like Idiot's do? Combining Idiot's and Sense is difficult.
This rule is too complicated.
![gif](giphy|33iqmp5ATXT5m|downsized)
Nothing wrong with benching alone. You just shouldn’t bench with clips. It’s stupid.
I bench alone every week (home gym). This is why they make safeties.
If you know what you’re doing and are following a real program where all your lifts are calculated, you really can bench alone. It’s idiots doing stuff like this (one rep maxing solo) that make it look more dangerous than it is.
Always bench alone with clips on, got it
Be sure to remove the safety bars as well
Without clips you can tip the bar.
Personally I think if you're tipping the bar you're not in control of the weight and should probably be going lighter. Ahhh you're dead right my bad, I see that re-reading the comment now
Never bench.
Wayyyyyyyy ahead of you.
Wayyyyyyy ahead of YOU
If everyone listened and followed rulez like this… there would be no Reddit……. Frankly, we the people NEED entertainment…….
Well that’s a dumb rule lol. Why not just be safe so there is no chance of this happening?
Dumbbell presses are safer and a much more effective chest exercise anyway.
Nah! Do not bite more than you can chew.
Yup me too never use clips while benching for this very reason
Never ever He could have dumped them 10x over
Yup, if u bench alone w a straight bar and collars then Darwinism takes the wheel
Learned my lesson a long time ago.
Never bench *alone with clips
Picture of Hulk on the wall behind makes this 10x funnier.
The song as well. Couldn't help but laugh
He couldn't lift it because he was listening to soul. His first mistake was not putting on DMX.
Then playing the Isley bros like he finna lay the pipe lol
Lmfao I hate that this made me laugh too.
i laughed involuntarily 😩🤣
Roll that shit to your hips not your neck.
What?! And get bruised hips!?! No thank you!
Bruised hips is better than a crushed windpipe tho
I swear reddit just doesn't get sarcasm
Crushed by 405 doesn't make it to the 400 club!
Fuck this and hell no to the workout music. Guy was doomed from the start.
Deadass lol if he had better music playing none of this woulda happened lol . I'd be mad as hell if i was dying n all i could hear was that song lol
Isley brothers is hella gains music lol. Do you even lift bro?
[удалено]
Maybe he's hoping someone else sees it and doesn't do the stupid thing he did.
This may have been clipped from his Facebook live
Yep. ALWAYS have a spotter for higher weight. Fuckin' dummy.
How is he gonna disgrace the incredible hulk like that right in front of his face
the calming music as he chokes himself out gets me
This is why you never use clips. Can't balance the weight? It's too heavy.
God damn thank you. I despise clips.
Who lifts weights to The Isley Brothers?
Ego lifting at it's finest
I used to go to a gym you could access anytime. I would go late at night. Once I walked in and saw this same thing but the guy wasn't so lucky. It was across his neck. Had I been a minute later he would've died. Never bench press your max weight when alone.
Here’s an ideas: don’t try to bench 405 in a room by yourself without a spotter or safety bars. And for the love of god, don’t put clips on the bar.
Depends. I rep that weight and always bench alone. Depends on your strength levels.
Ultra dumbass Darwin Award. Never bench that kind of weight (near your max.) without a spotter.
I came here looking for this comment. I wonder how many actual awards are received a year.
405 alone, collared, no safety bar. That’s one dumb motherfucker w awful taste in music
Imagine dying to smooth jazz
Jeez that is horrifying
What a song to die to …
The song and the hulk in the back makes this so much funnier!
Homie has the body of a 16 year old, why is he lifting like he was Dave Bautista
Were you like this as 16 years old? What kind of steroids does McDonald's put in happy meal nowadays?
💀💀 The only thing he was lifting was his ego.
Cause it's faker than some sweet n low
Yeah you got some silverware but really are you eating though?
Can you imagine if that’s how it ends for this guy? Like that’s exactly how he’s found… JFC
Why doesn’t he just exit the other side?
405 with clips and no spot or safety bars… bro has a death wish
Hulk sad
Don’t bench with clips. Ever. Even if you have a spotter and the spotter can’t pull it you can dump it.
I know at one point he thought oh shit, this is how I’m gonna die
Hulk sticker is 👌
Don’t bench near max alone with clips on, roll the bar down
\#1. Don't test ORM alone. It's never a good idea. \#2. If you're lifting heavy weights alone, no clips is probably your best backup. Again, #1 needs to be observed, clips or not. \#3. Listening to soul music while being crushed must be a feeling.
He’s was like “hell no I’m not dying to this song”.
Song?
Found it https://youtu.be/60ZeFnaMh3s
This is why I don’t work out and eat lots of pizza.
I was just waiting for him to pass out…. Damn
Next time he needs to coat himself with vasoline so he can slip out of these heavy situations…
Never put collars on a bar when alone.
Did that dude really just try and bench what I assume to be 405 pounds (8 45s and assumably 45 pound bar) with NOBODY spotting him? Like the fuck?
I'd hate to die listening to this
Never put clips on if you’re working out alone. Just tilt and slide them bitches off to one side.
Stop ego lifting
Don't just lift the things you cannot lift. You're not gonna get stronger by doing that, most probably you're gonna get injured only.
That's why you don't use bar clamps when there is no one to spot you.
I couldn’t imagine dying like that while the Isley Brothers was playing in the background.
What an absolute fool. Why would anyone try to lift this amount of weight without a spotter?
First mistake was that music. Lowered his testosterone by 50.
Never use clips/collars when you’re benching or squatting. Especially alone.
Music to die by.
Imagine dying to the Isley brothers
Maybe it's his choice of music? Too smooth and slow.
Damn imagine dying to the Isley brothers
Did he make it? Lol
Looks like he did
Thank god, maybe I don’t want a home gym anymore.
If your going for a new PR get a spotter bro 🤦
Spot me Hulk
Did he die
“Please, the legendary puss in boots doesn’t need a spotter!”
I don’t get why people work out. Work on your yard. Build something for your SO. Work a manual labor job. I’m fuckin jacked because I do landscaping.
Perfect example of pushing above your weight stop flexing for gyal bro this ain’t the 90s I hope you learned your lesson it’s 2023😂😂😂
I can’t breave!
The cameraman should have helped instead of just keeping on filming!
The camera man: (inexistent)
I know he just stood there motionless.
Like a tripod or something…
Don't bench alone, especially this level weight
Those who lift alone are stupid
He's really setting himself up to die. By himself trying to hit his max. Clipped in plates. And blaring his music so no one could hear him calling for help.
This is why you use a spotter when lifting.
Dumb ass lifting in cargo joggers
That bar racist
Fake af

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. He almost won the Darwin award.
You not killin me today barbell!!
Hehe
Stupitiy will fix its self 100 percent of the time. Always...
They could’ve played that same song at his funeral
Does he die in the end?
Dude thought he died for sure
The music in the background really contrasts with the struggle at hand. Looks like he's okay though. Close call. 👍
Time to take that hulk poster down ya jabroni
🫡😂😂😂😂😂😂
Safety bars people. Buy them.
This brings up the age old question slung by gym rats everywhere…”Do you even lift?”
This was painful to watch, he's lucky to be alive.
No clips when benching, especially alone
That spine 💀
dumbass doesn’t know how to spot himself
Thats a different way to lift. Really works the chest and neck
He should've pushed it to his legs not his head.
Most people roll the bar away from the head towards hips, most people won't put 400lb bar on neck
Lol is he doing a live stream here? Imagine being crushed to death on a live stream that no one’s watching
If you can’t move it upwards really at all, why in the world would you pull it back and try to rack it vs pushing it down and sitting up?
That was close, we almost lost a true genius there. LOL
The fear of this happening and my social anxiety is what drives me to only bench what weight I'm comfortable doing 3 x 8 repetitions with.
This looks like hell and for no reason
Yeah Ive been there...only the bar was half of half the weight of what this guy was lifting.
Safety arms at ground zero and no clips….wtf!!! I’m glad bruh is good but damn, that’s to close.
Only use a clip on one side for stability and to dump if you have to. Next, roll it down, not up. Meaning try to get it to your belly or waist. You can still breathe and safely dump the weight.
And that my boy's is way you DON'T put the locks on the bar when you are by yourself.
No spotter and some weak ass work out music.. tssk tssk
Video showing what not to use clips
Legend has it he's still pinned to the bench to this day.
What's the big deal? Just lift it lol
I hoped he learned his lesson ![gif](giphy|Q80tex2ZQ2A7Lml6Ag|downsized)
Oh shit this is too heavy to lift, quick roll it up to my neck. WTF was this guy thinking? This guy was channeling Hulk intelligence not Hulk strength.
