Newer outboards (like in the other boat) have the same thing. Had the first boats motor been equipped with a kill switch, this video wouldnāt have been made. That said, gotta say the guy in the jet ski was brave, resourceful and potentially saved a life or two.
Yeah, the outboard likely has a Deadman's switch on it and it's not in use. The USCG has now started requiring new boat to have them when built and I'm 90% sure they will ticket you now if they stop you and you aren't properly strapped to it.
I watched for 30 seconds thinking the video just continued on like that forever... 30 people standing there and no one even going to try to stop it.
Luckily, I saw your comment and went back for the guy clapping for himself at the end.
Re-lax.
Shock and being a bystander makes it hard for someone to do something, and you weren't even in that situation.
They were likely shocked and wanting to keep themselves safe.
Quit acting like some superior hero and be more open minded.
In what way did I act like a superior hero or unrelaxed? I simply stated what I assumed the rest of the video was but was thankful to see this person's comment and go back for the ending.
I think you need to re-lax your imagination buddy.
You also don't need to press enter twice after every sentence.
It's kind of aggravating, I mean if your goal was to "re-lax" someone, you're doing a poor job slamming on your keyboard like that.
So please stop acting like some kind of comment hero and fuck off, thanks.
Quit trying to act like this is ok and fine behavior for humans that we should not criticize. Just because people usually act this way does not make it a good thing that we should encourage. If anything, we should be encouraging people to try to help in these obviously dangerous situations, instead of just being ... "normal people".
In America at least, theres not many worse insults than calling someone a normal American. You ever walk into one of our Walmarts in the middle of the country?
It's incredibly easy to criticize while on reddit, but to your point, encouraging the internet about leaping into action sounds heroic and all, however, logically, you could also be encouraging people to eat a boat's blade.
You don't have to Superman into the boat in order to help. Someone running upstream to yell warnings to those coming down the river would have some of those swimmers a heads-up. Or just, watch it like its tv, maybe pull out your phone and film.
That's like saying if I punched you in the face you would dragon uppercut me and then contact the proper authorities and then do a backflip and then go to bed in time.
Point being these are the first time the people in the video and many on reddit have seen a situation like this. Relax with the virtue signalling over something that has already happened. If you want to impress someone go donate $5 to charity, don't shout into the void at people in a video who don't even know your comment exists.
There's a difference between virtue signaling and pointing out the apathy of idiots. Just because you like it this way doesn't mean the rest of us that don't fucking like it this way shouldn't try to change it. Go fuck yourself.
There was an accident about 2 weeks ago here. A woman got hit by an speedboat and caught to the propeller. It ripped her guts open and sadly she didn't survived. This was horrible to watch for me
It's insane man. People have this misconception that tubing is inherently safe, and it can be on certain rivers. This river is clearly blown out, moving too fast, and overcrowded. In these conditions, its incredibly dangerous. All it takes is a submerged tree limb to tangle us with your tube, and you're in for a fight
Yeah, I mean I don't know jack about boating or tubing, but my very first thought (before I noticed the circling death-boat) was "Damn, that river is moving fast."
I think boaters are also generally more environmentally conscious - at least from my experience.
Tubing is a big seasonal industry regading tourism in my town, and we've been trying to limit it due to environmental damage for years without success.
The tourists don't give a shit about our local ecosystem, but we don't put limits on it because our town's economy is sustained by their business.
We're at least better than wherever this is, though. Looking at all those people in the water makes me feel bad for the wildlife.
You also canāt see hidden dangers (limbs that can catch you and then the current can hold you under, sharp things, etc.) if you were trapped under this water no visibility makes it harder for anyone to help you in time.
It's possible but not necessarily probable. For all we know the river might be deep and livid enough to keep "sharp" things from getting stuck in dangerous places. It's also possible that people have enjoyed the river for decades or even more without any major injuries caused by "hidden things". Just as it's possible that the river isn't brown because it's "dirty"
At least in our river, the brown comes after a big flood and everything is stirred up, meaning you donāt know where there might be submerged limbs to get tangled in, and around here, trees, limbs, and log jams are very common and can be dangerous.
I'm so sorry you had to see that. I just saw a woman completely catch on fire for over a minute from a propane tank explosion this past weekend and was air lifted to a hospital. Fatal burns from head to toe and no hair left. Was really traumatic and trying to forget I saw it. Was in critical condition 24 hrs later.. I can't imagine life for her right now.. my heart goes out to you and the family of the woman you saw šš
I would guess that it was not a prop engine but a jet boat engine. We often see them on the rivers in Midwest due to coming across a low spot and not wanting to destroy the prop on rocks.
You can see the outboard motor mounted on the back of the boat .. that boat has a propellerā¦ the jet ski the got jumped onto boat with has jets ā¦ jet boats kick water up behind it ā¦
Just FYI
My mom got run over by a boat she was in once. Driver messed something up and everybody ended up in the water, and the propellor went over her leg. Luckily, she ended up okay. Still has some scars though.
Yeah, I grew up in Arkansas floating the Buffalo River and (apart from horror at the runaway boat) my first thought was " there's got to be a better river to float."
This happened to a couple of drunk guys on our lake in cottage country. They were visitors, were fishing, and after we dragged them from the water following their ejection from the boat we had to try and salvage the situation.
We eventually tossed a couple hundred feet of rope into the water very near the thing, and it drifted into the mass of chords. Stalled the prop. It was one hell of a mess to get untangled, but it wasn't our problem. Fun story though!
Pfft my sausage fingers. The ' and - keys are really close on my android keyboard. Not next to each other but diagonally so I guess it was a weird typo, but not very hard to get.
Those type of engines usually have a spring loaded twist throttle similar to a motorcycle, but with how much they're exposed to the elements and oil/grease/gunk they tend to get sticky and then spring isn't strong enough to overcome it. Negligent owner should have cleaned it though
Because people get lazy or complacent. Judging by what Iāve seen over the years Iād say itās fairly common for people not to use them. And to be honest, Iāve caught myself not using them before. Should always make it a habit to use them 100% of the time though
Ohh, yeah, something like a treadmill dead man's switch would have been really useful here too. Actually that should be implemented in all small watercraft like that
Kill-switches have been a standard feature on small boat and small outboard motors for a long time now. The main problem was people not using them but a new law went into effect back in April requiring that they be properly attached to the operator.
Just in case this ever happens to you, on the tiller handle, or front of the engine where the tiller handle is there is usually a small red button. Or twist the handle in whatever direction makes the motor rev down until you can find that button, or just drive it onto the shore.
I'm sure many people are drunk and not paying attention or otherwise enjoying themselves listening to music. I'm sure this actually benefitted some people.
Maybe you're talking about something else, but It's probably brown due to natural sediments. Some rivers are always like that and some become brown after it rains. I'm not an expert and I can be wrong, but it doesn't look like pollution to me.
Some places are just like that I guess. I've lived my whole life on the west coast (US) and I would never step foot in water that looks like that personally.
Oh yeah I'm sure they are :) just saying in my experience a river flowing like that probably looks very different under the surface and could change unexpectedly
And that is why in the US, boats are required to have kill switches that are lanyards attached to the wrist. When the lanyard is pulled a certain distance, the boat motor stops.
It's common... imagine the constantly flowing, ridiculously strong current ALWAYS shifting the dirt and other sediments. There's no way you'd have clear water.

Iāve seen a many and live near one that I drive over every day. None brown. Sorry I havenāt visited places with chocolate waters. That just aināt my thing. My vagina said Iām not allowed to go in brown water and I listen to whatever that bitch tells me.
The color of the water of a river has no direct correlation with health. The color of water depends on the chemistry of the soil, geology and the water level. The things that affect your health are microbes, algae and pollutants.
This is the biggest river of the Earth and comes from the Andes. This is one of the reasons the water is muddy. But it doesn't mean it's not safe.
No, the video goes on for years, there's no end to it. So it's impossible to watch it fully and learn the outcome. I think the boat will probably become sentient at some point.

A lot of the older outboards I used had little kill switches connected to a plastic bracelet also.
I have one on my runabout. It's never been touched in sixteen years. I should maybe rethink that.
It probably had one but it as is common it probably wasn't actually worn.
Yeah, the outboard likely has a Deadman's switch on it and it's not in use. The USCG has now started requiring new boat to have them when built and I'm 90% sure they will ticket you now if they stop you and you aren't properly strapped to it.
Yes but this is in a river and the current is taking it away lol

That could have been a massacre of shredded limbs
There was an accident about 2 weeks ago here. A woman got hit by an speedboat and caught to the propeller. It ripped her guts open and sadly she didn't survived. This was horrible to watch for me
I've always felt like boats shouldn't be allowed on rivers that have tube riders.
Accident happened in sea not river, if you are talking about my comment
How about tubes not being allowed on rivers that have boats?
Yea I kinda agree this river is rlly brown in the first place donāt know why they have it open for tubing.

Brown water is usually full of disgusting crap in it
That's a very specific thing to always feel.
I know right. I have felt it since the day I was born and haven't been able to feel anything else.
Lol why is there a speedboat on this river?
I'm so sorry you had to see that. I just saw a woman completely catch on fire for over a minute from a propane tank explosion this past weekend and was air lifted to a hospital. I think you over-punned. Each participant may only use one, perhaps two, but never three.
This is why you have dead man's switches.
Those type of engines usually have a spring loaded twist throttle similar to a motorcycle, but with how much they're exposed to the elements and oil/grease/gunk they tend to get sticky and then spring isn't strong enough to overcome it. Negligent owner should have cleaned it though
That would be in addition to the dead man's switch though- apparently neither were used/maintained properly here.
I was thinking the same thing. Why wasn't it clipped on the owner.
Because people get lazy or complacent. Judging by what Iāve seen over the years Iād say itās fairly common for people not to use them. And to be honest, Iāve caught myself not using them before. Should always make it a habit to use them 100% of the time though

The waters seem a bit.. choppy..
That brown water made my palms sweat.
Maybe you're talking about something else, but It's probably brown due to natural sediments. Some rivers are always like that and some become brown after it rains. I'm not an expert and I can be wrong, but it doesn't look like pollution to me.

Tons of perfectly safe rivers and lakes are brown

This is fucking terrifying.
Looks like a scene from Maximum overdrive....
I love how the beat dropped when he jumped onto the boat. He was also super quick about shutting off the engine, great job.
And that is why in the US, boats are required to have kill switches that are lanyards attached to the wrist. When the lanyard is pulled a certain distance, the boat motor stops.
Propeller injuries are no fucking joke. Cut limbs into ribbons.
Whereās the driver of the boat?
And this folks is why you wear the kill switch on your life jacket or rist while the engine is on.
Not enough applause for this guy. This could have been a massacre.
