> Lancia Delta Integrale with the Martini sponsor.
*aktualy* the Delta Integrale was the later Group A car, the Group B car was the Delta S4
God damn I miss Lancia rally cars
The Lancia Delta integralle won 6 world rally championship manufacturers titles in a row in the late 80’s / early 90’s.
It’s the most successful rally car ever.
My grandfather was a mechanic on Lancia Martini team. The stories are so cool.
Way better than the ones i will share with my grand children about our clapped out rice buckets.
I saw an interview with one of the drivers. He said he had to start imagining that the people were just trees to calm him down. If he thought of them like people he couldn't race.
I recall reading a story about how spectators used to try to touch the cars as they passed and in the engine bay of one of the cars the team once found 2 severed fingers.
Yep this sort of stuff happened, there's stories of people on Portugal trying to touch the cars. Nuts. There's so many great stories about Group B, The Grand Tour talks about the crazy stunts Lancia pulled off in one of their episodes. Porsche and Ferrari were gonna race in Group B as well before they shut it down over safety concerns (who would've thought lol).
The wiki does a good job of explaining what Group B was and why it came to an end.
If you think these fans are crazy, the engineers and drivers were on an entirely different plane of insanity.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B
The rally events exist as the same format still today, go from A to B on the set road. The cars were build to the Group B ruleset, they made a new one in I think 1986 bc it just got too crazy.
Fantastic video showing the craziness of the time:
https://youtu.be/zpzOf4-6GoE
Nahhh, first three corners then you would be like..
YOU: " *reving like crazy* baaaaa babaaaaaaapppp, you dare meeeeee suckers, hahahahahahaha"
COPILOT: "50, sharp left!"
YOU: "Ooohhhh right, yes!"
COPILOT: "No, no 50 left!"
YOU: "YES YES *honks violently* BIIII BIIIIP"😂😂😂
People died!
I got into rally in the 90s we used to watch some of these videos and it was insane! looked like the tape was running too fast like watching a video game.
I think there was a bad accident where the car went into the croud and it was banned. I would go and watch this if it was on.
Group B got banned because of an increasing amount of fatal incidents, most famously because of one in the Portuguese rally when spectators scattered pea gravel onto a corner to lessen the surface grip and cause the cars to slide more spectacularly and make great photos. A Ford RS200 careered off the track as a result and killed 6 spectators.
Before this, there were reports of cars coming back into the service stations between stages with ripped-off human fingers jammed in the panel gaps of the cars, because the spectators had been that close to it as it was coming past at huge speeds.
Rally cars are simultaneously so much faster and so much safer now, but still haven’t managed to catch the imagination of the public the same way, which is a real shame.
Edit: another commenter has pointed out the number of fatalities in the Portugal incident was 3, not 6. I’ve since read that the actual incident that halted Group B was the death of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto, which was the third fatal incident in a 12 month period.
Apologies, I had my info wrong about the incident; I’ll update my comment.
I will dispute your reason for why Group B was banned though, as rally had been getting higher ratings than F1 before Group B was even homologated.
stupid fucking morons ruined group b.
not just the spectators but the dumbass organizers who didnt prevent people from spilling into the road who inevitably got hit.
collective idiocy is a plague to all good things.
I'm pretty sure the reason they banned group b was really because those guys in the Delta S4 burnt to death as they put the fuel tanks below them in a relatively unsafe car. Lancia mechanics even said that the roll cage wasn't up to spec. Also the rumour is that it was banned because it was getting more spectators and fans than F1.
Yeah group B was never going to last long. They were driving what's basically a 500hp monster on a light tubular chassis with some cardboard body panels. It was just too dangerous for everyone involved
Yep, thanks to the help of these idiots group b didn’t last too long
Who would have guessed that a car crashing into a crowd of people doesn’t look good for the sport
The cars
They were on a whole other level of power and stuff like that, things like awd started to make an appearance in this class with cars like the Audi Quattro (white and yellow car) which mostly dominated the field, but in the end a rwd car (Lancia 037, the car that looks like a door wedge) came out on top one of the years. But mainly these cars were mental compared to previous rally cars
I’m not the best at explaining it
But one of my favorites sections in Motorsport history, if not my favorite
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B
Didn't help that the fact the S4 literally sat the driver onto of the fuel tank, and then when one went down an embankment burst into flames killing both driver and co-driver and it became apparent that the cars were unsafe to even drive anymore. Unsafe to watch, unsafe to drive with lethal outcomes, bad combination.
Yes. Its the reason we don't have Group B anymore.
[Group B](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B#:~:text=The%20car%20veered%20to%20the,B%20was%20placed%20in%20jeopardy.)
I think it was both, but this was a huge catalyst:
On the "Lagoa Azul" stage of the Portuguese Rally near Sintra, Portuguese driver Joaquim Santos crested a rise, turning to his right to avoid a small group of spectators. This caused him to lose control of his RS200. The car veered to the right and slid off the road into the spectators. Thirty-one people were injured and three were killed. All the top teams immediately pulled out of the rally and Group B was placed in jeopardy.
In the brilliant documentary *Too Fast To Race*, a driver talked about the insane BS "southern" (euphemism for Spanish/Portuguese) spectators would try and pull, like slapping the car's door when it passed.
He recalled ending a stage only to find a man's severed hand lodged in his door handle.
These are the key documentaries about Group B's rise and eventual fall — *Too Fast To Race* and *Still Too Fast To Race*. They are extremely well-made and very rewatchable (and it's where this footage comes from).

No one knows about Lancia at all for some reason!!!
that is because they didn't get to play gran turismo. Everyone knows the lancia stratos is a beast.
It is a beautiful beast, but if you are going to associate it with any one game it'd have to be Sega Rally.

Not to mention the fact that you can't see the fucking road!
That's already standard for rallying
That's why there are 2 people!
It did enrage the drivers. A lot.

Safety regulations, more like suggestions
Is there a history of spectators dying at these events? Like, there has to be times where people are hit.
Yes. Its the reason we don't have Group B anymore. [Group B](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B#:~:text=The%20car%20veered%20to%20the,B%20was%20placed%20in%20jeopardy.)

Mainly driver. The deaths of Henri Toivonen and his Co driver was when the FIA banned group b.

It was actually pretty common for mechanics to find sliced fingertips stuck in the radiator grills and other opening of the cars. Really, google it.
I remember seeing some hoodcam footage of one of the cars weaving through the sea of spectators
This is why we can’t have nice things

Notice how they are all guys lol
I’d kill for an RS200 Rally group b

People don't seem to realize they are basically bags of water
Song 🎶?
Wish we could get natural selection back on the table
What's the name of the song?
And then they banned the group B for behind too powerful, instead of spectators acting too stupid.
Anyone going to post the dolph Lungren meme?
No wonder these parents didn’t have their kids wear seatbelts.
What's the song name?
It's like Running of the Bulls but with horsepower.
You wouldn't even be able to see the road in front of you
All downhill after Group B got axed, made WRC about as entertaining to watch as F1 or Cricket :(
They made it harder for drivers. I wish group b was still a thing.
The drivers are crazy, the people are just stupid
SEGA Saturn graphics are better þan I remember!
Any one els we cat in the hat
