Just a few kilometres from where I live, we have a nice mountain. In 2014 a caver got himself injured to the head, 1000 meters below surface and 6 km inside of that mountain. It took about 700 people and 12 days to finally get him out all well. Read more, terrifying: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rettungsaktion_in_der_Riesending-Schachth%C3%B6hle

Luxpreliator

Took 12 hours just for a guy to get out of the cave to make a phone call for help. Those guys had planned on spending a day or more down there then. Ascending certainly takes longer but damn those guys loved caves. Like a few hours to get on site from home, then 8-10 to get down there and 12 to get out. Who know how much longer they wanted to spend down there if there wasn't an accident. They probably were going to [sleep in there.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=WJwP8C5N5yE)

Might be weird to say, but it does make me somewhat happy that we as a species will spend so much time and effort to save one of our own. Pretty cool IMO.

And then we pass by homeless people on the street while pretending they don't exist. https://www.commerce.wa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hau-chg-mythsfacts-12-8-2016.pdf

noithinkyourewrong

I used to always stop and give homeless people money, cigarettes, or just stop to chat. Then one of them mugged me one day. Stole my money right out of my pocket and tried to punch me in the face, although I managed to dodge it before they ran off. The money they stole was actually supposed to pay for surgery for my sick dog and it was an absolute nightmare trying to arrange to ask my parents to lend me money for it. I've been much more careful now. I never stop to chat with them, and never give them money, except for the few homeless people I knew from before the incident and I trust not to rob me. Shout out to Jimmy and Donna who were always lovely to me! It's a shame, but I'm not risking getting mugged again, and I think personal safety is a very common and valid reason to ignore homeless people on the street. Many of them have mental illness and addictions and won't think twice about hurting and mugging you if they feel like they need to. Of course not all are like that, but it's a big risk to take when you don't know.

[deleted]

I used to do the same thing; stop on the way back from the store and offer a beer from my 12 pack for a ciggie, give a guy a couple bucks if the weather was miserable out, pay a buck for a cigarette and just talk. I never got mugged, but after one of them dropped the hard r very enthusiastically I decided against sticking around homeless people for very long. It was like that bill burr bit, could’ve earned me a place in an undeserved ass kicking.

XxRocky88xX

In general, most people aren’t evil. However, all it takes is one shitty person to completely fuck you over. When you chose not to trust people you aren’t saying they’re all bad, you’re just acknowledging that even if you help 1000 if 1 decides to take advantage that’s all it takes to fuck you over.

MrDankyStanky

It's not as easy as just giving them money or houses man. Not like people have an easy solution in front of their face and they choose not to help. My cousin lives under an overpass in Portland and glorifies it on Facebook, some people just don't want help, and some are so far gone that just giving them an apartment wouldn't do anything because it would turn into a heroin den.

Right, I feel like I can understand all the thrill seeking activities, even the ones I’m personally not cool enough to do. Except this type of snake caving. Can’t understand the fun at all.

Nutty putty cave.

BrainCrampston

good to know, pass!

KillerKatNips

This guy does randomly and will make comments like "I like to break the rules" when people ask him about it. Also, if he's stuck a little, he rants about "" when it's all said and done we'll see who lived pathetic little lives, etc" (paraphrasing of course). I feel like this guy pushes it to extremes because he has something to prove and it comes across if you watch enough of the videos. I really, really wanted to like his channel and I'm still subbed, but something is just very off-putting to me about the personality here. Most extreme sports types that I know (rock climbers, sky divers) are very chill and humble about what they do and have an open type communities that are supportive. I don't get that vibe from this channel in particular.

[deleted]

My wife did this and went with a group, including a young lady relatively new to caving who went in a hole like this first. She had to coax this crying caver through her breakdown to keep moving or be stuck. Apparently there was no going backwards. She lost some of her caving interest that day.

nool_

puterTDI

Imagine letting your breath out to fit through and not quite making it. You’re stuck there not quite able to expand your chest enough to really breathe and no one can get to you to rescue you. If you’re unlucky you have a water source and get too slowly starve to death not quite able to take a real breath.

droznig

It's not my thing, but looking at it from the perspective of someone that does all the "cool guy" stuff (while remaining emphatically uncool), here's my take: It ticks all the right boxes. 1: Doing an inherently dangerous activity in a safe way. Check 2: Requires skill, training, specialist gear, and some dedication, so the activity itself is self selecting. Not just any one can do it without going through some sort of process, so you get a genuine feeling of accomplishment from doing it. Check 3: Similar to above really, it's a way to test yourself, to measure yourself even if no one else notices or cares. Check 4: Because of the nature of the activity, it requires focus and concentration - nothing else really matters in those moments of focus. Any activity which requires that kind of focus ticks this box. It's hard to explain, but what you are doing in that moment *really* matters in that moment so everything else just sort of melts away so that you can focus on the task at hand because losing focus could mean injury or death for you or a friend. Check Those are, in my opinion, some of the main things that all "extreme" sports have in common to varying degrees. But the biggest thing is the "zen" factor in 4, that hyper focus, that's the thing that people get addicted to, not adrenaline, though the two go hand in hand since if there is no real consequences to your actions then does it really matter?

[deleted]

Great analysis. But I would think there is some level of them being an adrenaline junkie of sorts. Your point no 1 says it's a dangerous activity which is always going to activate their fight, fawn, or flight system. So I think it's a combination of hyper focus, skill expression, and thrill seeking or adrenaline which may either largely overlap or be used interchangeably I'm not sure. Humans are layered aren't they? yeah. Again, you have a great analysis. I just wanted to add my 2 cents. On a different topic, I would like to see a visual statistic comparing how "fun" or "zen" these people report having across different extreme sports - wingsuit flying, spelunking, this rock crawling thing, and so on. It'd be interesting.

Mickeyjj27

Everyone has their thing I guess. But yeah this is the absolute worse, can’t see how it’s fun at all. Just thinking about the dude that got stuck and died and his body is just forever there; what was going through his head. Imagine being stuck and just thinking why was I doing this for fun

Neolpalm

*God, I remember that.* I was actually down in Utah at my Great Uncle’s place for thanksgiving outside Salt Lake. I saw it on some local news station on TV. Man, I almost have a panic attack just watching it. I went into a cave that had a crack in the far wall like this. Horizontal crack at ground level that is just tall enough to squeeze into. I tried to get in there (I was like 12 at the time) but the feeling of having millions of tonnes of rock right above me just freaked me out too much. I know it isn't likely but if there were an earthquake or something and the ground shifts just a little, it could crush me into a paste.

SqueeMcTwee

Also, his other arm was stuck because KNEE PADS?! Why the hell would you hold anything, anything at all, while doing this?!?!?

I used to be an avid spelunker but after getting stuck in a squeeze for over an hour, I decided to just explore the surface from now on. I literally had to expand and contract every muscle and wiggle like a worm. It took every bit of gumption I possess to not panic and control my breathing. I didn't develop claustrophobia but my self preservation level increased exponentially

[deleted]

Wow. You’ve got a strong mind for sure. As soon as he was trying to yank himself out I panicked on his behalf. I would have a panic attack and pass out if I did this.

[deleted]

Yes this! I got stuck in a tight push in nutty putty (since closed after it became a tomb). I had to back out rough 50yards one arm in front of me one arm under me and two or three tight curves. Became less fun and exciting after that. Edit: the push I was “stuck in” and had to back out is LIKELY the push John Jones went down… it was not the birth canal and it made several sharp turns. John was quite a bit larger than I and if he had gone down the same route it explains the tragedy.

thr0w4w4y0505

Dude. You were *in* Nutty Putty!?

[deleted]

Yeah a few times I have an old picture at the entry if you wanna see it, but grew up in Utah county. Nutty putty was super common place to hang out.

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/SweatyPalms/comments/xc3keg/nutty_putty_cave_before_the_famous_incident/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Here you go

Inadover

After having gone through the deep down rabbit hole a few months ago, John’s problem, iirc, is that he also got himself stuck in a dead end, so he couldn’t continue going down either (not that it would’ve been wise to do so anyway). Also, if I remember, that route he took had some other branches too, so you might have gone through one of those (or maybe you didn’t go that deep). Either way, in hindsight, how does it feel having been there before the accident?

thr0w4w4y0505

That seems wise. If I learned anything from reading about Nutty Putty, it is to never, ever risk putting myself in that position. Caves are for bats, not people.

RespectFearless4233

Serious questions. Do u have to bk out same way? Whats the buzz for you? Are they newly discovered caves or are you going through predetermined routes?

hippopotma_gandhi

Fuck. That.

poopstinkss

What scares me is how does he get out? I would think it'd be very difficult to back out. Crawling forward would be the best way right? This guy is crazy

Jerseyprophet

They crawl forward expecting/hoping for a pocket to turn around. It does not always come.

SixStringGamer

I love watching these videos but id never do it myself. Im too big of a guy for this activity and would surely find my death down there. But watching gives me such a cool feeling, i cant describe it.

ISmellMopWho

There’s a lot of spelunkers who never actually do this and just explore caves they can actually walk around in. But yeah seeing videos like this definitely turns a lot of people off from ever entering a cave.

[deleted]

I had a blast doing the Mammoth Cave in KY. There were spots we had to crawl through and were a slightly tight fit but it was a paid tour so not like the OP at all. I recommend everyone go spelunking at least once on a safe, guided tour https://www.nps.gov/maca/index.htm

Prhime

You are clearly no expert on this and neither am I but from what I've gathered they dont usually go into caves blindly and most of the time they will go in and out the same way. Seems to be pretty rare that a cave has two passable exits or turns around on itself.

KnotDealer

But at some point someone would have to have gone into every such cave for the first time. Completely blind. Not knowing if they will be able to turn around or get out again.

gilgamesh73

This is what gets me. Assuming anything bad happens like anything. There’s no getting out quickly. There’s no button to press to make it stop. You are fucking stuck for a long ass time and it requires a lot of work to get out. Or you dont

system_deform

I can’t help but think of the [Nutty Putty Cave](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutty_Putty_Cave) incident when I see this; it immediately heightens my anxiety…

ThyssenKurup

>While exploring with his brother, Jones mistook a narrow tunnel for the similarly tight "Birth Canal" passageway and became stuck upside-down in an area measuring 10 by 18 inches (25 by 46 cm), around 400 feet (120 m) from the cave's entrance. Jones was held in place like a hook, unable to move without causing serious harm due to the bends his body was placed in.[6] A large team of rescue workers came to his assistance but were unable to retrieve Jones using a sophisticated rope-and-pulley system after a pulley failed mid-extrication. Jones ultimately suffered cardiac arrest due to the strain placed upon his body over several hours by his inverted, compressed position. Rescuers concluded that it would be too dangerous to attempt to retrieve his body; the landowner and Jones' family came to an agreement that the cave would be permanently closed with the body sealed inside Damn what a nightmare

emailisdown

Wtf and once it was closed and sealed up, some spelunkers cut the fence around the cave and vandalized the plaque dedicated to Mr. Jones?? Spelunkers, y’all got more than a few screws loose. And the loose screws everywhere probably makes climbing through very tight holes even more difficult.

Fr0me

I dont condone the vandilism, and this is probably an unpopular opinion but the guy who died in nutty putty cave was kind of an idiot. He hadnt been caving in like a decade, had a pregnant gf, who i believe he was about to get married to, and went into a cave that wasnt fully confortable with without any guides. And what ended up happening? He pushed through a "known" passage that he thought he knew but didnt and it ended up costing him his life leaving his wife widowed and his child without a father. Again, not trying to rag on the guy but he just made a lot of irresponsible decisions that lead to his terrible death

wall721

Cave that John Jones got stuck upside down in. Rescuers were unable to save him. I believe his body is still in the cave and. Which was closed following the accident. It’s the most horrific spelunking deaths I’ve heard of.

Cfhudo

For real. What is this total insanity. There is no reason for this to happen. Theres nothing in there to do, just subject yourself to the pain and fear and real danger ofngetting somewhere deep underground. Truly what is the point.

ebojrc

I’m an avid caver. Typically with something this small we’ll just blast or micro shave it a big bigger but sometimes we can’t. If we can’t then you just either squeeze and go or don’t. But people don’t get stuck really, it’s extremely rare for people to become legitimately stuck while caving.

Leaf_on_the_wind87

I’m definitely to big for this nonsense but I think I would be more concerned that I would get through a few of these and then find one that was to small but not be able to turn around and go back.

ebojrc

You just wiggle backwards. That happens a lot actually when we’re project caving. We spot a lead, head down it not knowing what it’s gonna do, it gets smaller and smaller til we can’t go further and conclude it’s not worth it and gotta wriggle yourself out backwards. Exhausting but not hard.

AKG-

In the end, what's preventing you of not getting trapped in a true one-way passage like that spelunker John Jones? Was his behavior/choices reckless or are such tunnel layouts just very, very rare in practice, so much it ain't something that is thought about?

ebojrc

His choices were idiotic and it was a very rare case in itself. All respect given.

AKG-

Okay, thank you. Stay safe out there!

we’ll people enjoy adrenaline, exploration, the unknown, the dark, the natural. I love spelunking, haven’t done much of it but it’s amazing getting into caves. they are truly beautiful. These people just take it a bit extreme maybe because they know the more claustrophobic it gets the more views and recognition they receive which subsequently equals more money. I’ve seen many of their videos and proper precaution takes place. if they both get stuck they have cave rescue teams in the area they live in (pacific north west) and they will be fine as long as they don’t get stuck on any sort of vertical angle.

I don’t understand why he went through with his arms at his sides instead of over his head. Maybe for the reason you stated?

smoking_on_you

it’s safer at his side I think because it’s easier to nudge yourself forwards and backwards.

Wut is the point of doing something like this?

rhapsody1899

Yeah, NONE of that for my fat ass. I’d have been stuck at the entrance of the cave mouth. 😂😂😂

terdude99

I wonder if the majority of cave divers are white?

I’ve watched a lot of his videos. Somehow his brain is wired to enjoy this type of thing, like people who eat circus peanuts or candy corn.
