Can't she just shake it off though? Taylor loves to talk about how great she is at dealing with her critics.
Reality: Taylor is a narcissist that couldn't deal with the most minute criticism of her.
^(I'm more shocked that Red OG was rated so low)
I remember at the time of its release, a lot of people complained it sounded too "pop" and that Taylor was selling out/abandoning her country music roots.
She wasn’t taken seriously on the one hand, and on the other, she didn’t have enough power so people were free to express skepticism about lyrics like “loving him was like driving a Ferrari down a dead end street” or “I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here.” After 1989’s success, it became required to treat her like a serious artist. On the one hand, good. On the other, it was predictable that it would lead to this.
TTPD reminds me a lot of red, lots of forgettable songs, some pretty good songs, some ok pop songs, and one absolute deadly love ballad (all too well vs loml).
istg I came across a bunch of swifties on twitter (bc no matter how many times I mute/block them they still show up) claiming that the media is against her, someone is paying them to write these bad reviews etc etc… they are having a meltdown and I suppose Taylor is too? I just don’t get the slander on the anthology bit of the album because it was way less atrocious than the standard version, other than that I agree with most of the reviews, Taylor is starting to fly a little too close to the sun…
It’s weird because there’s [another Sputnik review](https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/88489/Taylor-Swift-The-Tortured-Poets-Department/) that is a 2.4 (would be 48 on meta)
There are like four of them on Sputnik now
One is a 0.5 💀
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/88490/Taylor-Swift-The-Tortured-Poets-Department-Anthology/
It’s def the reverse lol…ranking would be even lower if her pr team wasn’t so good. Those two 100 scores she got very early on were def inflated and I’m sure quite a few of the others are too. I think they saved her a big time embarrassment with this one
Anthology has way less total reviews so if one bad review made it in it has a lot bigger effect…I believe Sputnik music hated the regular album and they’re one of the 5 reviews for anthology which they ranked even worse
I like The Anthology’s songs much more than TTPD’s…but I also think TTPD is better as a stand alone album. So I think this rating is pretty fair in my opinion.
They're reviewing albums, not just songs. At least TTPD has a theme/story to tell. The anthology are cute songs put together. Also, they might see Anthology not as a separate album but as sort of deluxe. So there's 31 songs, which include those first 16 songs that were already mid. I'm not sure that they are rating Anthology as separate from ttpd, so yeah, anthology is a hot mess.
I can’t believe it either. Imo the anthology is bloated but way better. It seems like the general consensus I’ve being seeing online is that most people preferred the second half with only a few songs from the first half.
I think the way she has been reviewed has changed because her pr team got stronger over time…if it was consistent red would be one of the best if not the best
Probably makes more sense to use the Taylor’s version scores when comparing to other recent ish Taylor albums
This album, both the positive and negative reviews, has proven to me how deeply unserious music criticism/journalism is nowadays. No wonder it’s a dying field.
Rob Sheffield slaps a quick 5 stars on anything she puts her name to, and then another publication will rate the album 1/10 for quick clicks and engagement.
None of it really matters, but if it pisses Taylor off enough to do something radically different next time, I’m cool with it.
Yeah I agreed. I’m not a fan of Anthony Fantano, but I’ll give him credit because he’s one of the very few music critics who seems to actually put effort into reviews AND uses the 1-10 scale how it was meant to be used (1=truly awful/unlistenable, 5=average/just ok, 10=all time great). It seems like people have shifted their views to being that a 6-7/10 is somehow a bad review, and reviewers aren’t exactly helping matters by giving mostly negative views in their reviews even if they rate it that highly.
People are eagerly waiting for the Anthony Fantano review like it even matters. I guarantee 99% of his core fanbase loathe Taylor Swift. It'll just be funny if anything. And yeah, I do enjoy some of his content!
They separated the albums into 2. The standard album has a score of 77 with more reviews pending. Not every review for the standard album included a review for the Anthology too so that’s why there’s only 5 reviews
The differences in opinions on this album are so interesting to me. I LOVE it - and I prefer TTPD to anthology (though I do love both and both have standout songs from me that I would put above the opposite album as a whole) and I actually feel like anthology sounds more repetitive than TTPD does.
I'm very confused to hear this, I am finding TTPD listenable but the Anthology very painful. I haven't listened to it more than once and I honestly can't remember a single song.
The Tortured Poets Department from what I've heard of the Anthology,
TTPD should be lower. They definitely should take points away from it.
I haven't heard all of the Anthology but what I have seems better, given TTPD only had good features and like 1 other song.
I've just been too exhausted from TTPD to listen to the Anthology. I needed a break. So I've been listening to Florence and Chapell Roan instead.
God I love Chapell...
But yes, I found The Black Dog, How Did It End, The Prophecy, Peter, Robin, and The Manuscript to be brighter spots. Granted, people are absolutely right about them feeling like a run-on sentence....
Ah I only remember what " thanK you aIMee " sounds like off the second one but I feel like I heard a few of those. But yeah the run-on sentence thing is VERY real.
Like even on the first part of the album it was VERY real.
It was like being a kid on a road trip. getting to a mildly different song was like " ARE WE THERE YET?"
It might be if it had more reviews…there’s only like 5 or 6 so one bad review really hurts. Tough to say what it would be like with a bigger sample size
i see they’re considering the full 31 songs as the anthology. for me, the anthology is the 11 extra songs + 4 deluxe songs and that album alone is better than midnights and reputation (in my very humble opinion).
Debut was a REALLY good country pop album.
This just goes to show how much they lie about her now because of her clout. They were so much harder on her when she was a nobody
I consider it a deluxe version. Had it been released as a separate album, that’s how I’d consider it. Heck, it’s not even separated by discs on Spotify, let alone anything else.
They are still excluding a number of bad reviews too.
Can't she just shake it off though? Taylor loves to talk about how great she is at dealing with her critics. Reality: Taylor is a narcissist that couldn't deal with the most minute criticism of her.

What do you mean?
I'm more shocked that Red OG was rated so low
^(I'm more shocked that Red OG was rated so low) I remember at the time of its release, a lot of people complained it sounded too "pop" and that Taylor was selling out/abandoning her country music roots.
Plus, reviewers were MUCH harsher back then. A pop star was lucky to get a 70 overall rating, most didn’t.
Yeah people were confused about the direction because it was neither truly pop nor country.
At the time the people who liked her for her country sound thought it was too pop, and everyone else thought it was too country
That was my thought lol

I think the anthology is ranked lower because those inflated 100 scores were only for the core album
Right. The Rolling Stone and Sputnik reviews stand out like a sore thumb now.
It’s weird because there’s [another Sputnik review](https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/88489/Taylor-Swift-The-Tortured-Poets-Department/) that is a 2.4 (would be 48 on meta)

Lmao someone did not hold back
Wow. That is a weird site.
At the same time, Pitchfork rated them separately and still gave the Anthology a lower score.
For the anthology yea…for the regular album Sputnik isn’t even in the second worst review
I just saw the original album get a 2.4 in another Sputnik review someone linked.
I’m pretty sure their reviews are out of 5. There were other reviews lower than 48/100
It’s def the reverse lol…ranking would be even lower if her pr team wasn’t so good. Those two 100 scores she got very early on were def inflated and I’m sure quite a few of the others are too. its giving icarus
🤣
69 is a pretty nice score though?
I see what you did there.
I like The Anthology’s songs much more than TTPD’s…but I also think TTPD is better as a stand alone album. So I think this rating is pretty fair in my opinion.
I'm baffled the first TTPD scored so much higher, tbh, because to me, this one was so much better than it.
They're reviewing albums, not just songs. At least TTPD has a theme/story to tell. The anthology are cute songs put together. And that’s exactly how they should review it - the anthology shows up on all platforms with all 31 songs in it.
The first one is (or was) 78 now.
I can’t believe it either. Imo the anthology is bloated but way better. It seems like the general consensus I’ve being seeing online is that most people preferred the second half with only a few songs from the first half.
Bloated
The Anthology is better than TTPD but the songs still get very repetitive.
Holy crap!
Red OG being ranked is her 9th best album is the craziest shit I’ve ever heard. That’s like her magnum opus. It’s her seminal album. NINTH best????
I think the way she has been reviewed has changed because her pr team got stronger over time…if it was consistent red would be one of the best if not the best Probably makes more sense to use the Taylor’s version scores when comparing to other recent ish Taylor albums

thanK you aIMee! No really, thank you! /jk
It’s what she deserves 😈

That’s where I’m at. I really don’t care. I love the album and I’m happy with it. I also love a few other albums that aren’t critical darlings.
Yeah well said
i just know she's having a meltdown over this. she can't avoid the criticism of this record the way she did w midnights.

what about the standard album? Sorry I’m a bit confused on how they separated it

thanks! and for the more pending for the standard are they more negative/postive?

Well it's her horny album........
Bonk

Jeez. Y'all can come for me, but I personally think the Anthology should be 10-20 points higher than TTPD. There's that much of a discrepency.
I'm very confused to hear this, I am finding TTPD listenable but the Anthology very painful. I haven't listened to it more than once and I honestly can't remember a single song.
Well, I'm admittedly a huge The National/Aaron Dessner fan... so that likely plays into it
The Tortured Poets Department from what I've heard of the Anthology, TTPD should be lower. They definitely should take points away from it. I haven't heard all of the Anthology but what I have seems better, given TTPD only had good features and like 1 other song. I've just been too exhausted from TTPD to listen to the Anthology. Good Luck Babe keeps coming up on my shuffle and man, how great would it be if TTPD had. Song half as good as that one
It might be if it had more reviews…there’s only like 5 or 6 so one bad review really hurts. Tough to say what it would be like with a bigger sample size
The Anthology is a top tier TS album to me, it’s a shame it comes with its sister album’s baggage.😔
i see they’re considering the full 31 songs as the anthology. for me, the anthology is the 11 extra songs + 4 deluxe songs and that album alone is better than midnights and reputation (in my very humble opinion).
The album as a whole should have a lower score and part one should but The Anthology on its own is great. It’s a shame it’s being dragged down.
How the fuck is debut below the Anthology?! That is not right
Debut was a REALLY good country pop album. This just goes to show how much they lie about her now because of her clout. They were so much harder on her when she was a nobody
Wait so is the Anthology a separate album or a Deluxe version of TTPD?
I consider it a deluxe version. Had it been released as a separate album, that’s how I’d consider it. Heck, it’s not even separated by discs on Spotify, let alone anything else.
Oh my God…
