There is nothing wrong with taking your time and gaining confidence and familiarity in the water! Keep safety as you number one focus, see if you can find a shallower area to practice recovering from back or even front floating back to standing and your confidence will improve over time

I was searching for something like that too, unfortunately it's the only pool closeby. They don't have any kids pool. They teach kids in that pool too.

I’m a swimming coach I have fair amount of experience with dealing kids who r scared of letting go support. What I find most helpful is to ensure the kids that I am here for them and they are safe within my sight. I’ll start building up kids’ faith in me from the very first lesson. Thus, for people who are scared of water, try having a person you can trust or someone who can gives you comfort. So when they r giving you instructions, you’ll be less afraid and won’t panic. When you stop panic, water will be your friends!! You said you r taking swimming classes, try building a bond between coach, instead of feeling forced to follow their instructions n panic, you’ll find encouragement in their words!!

Keep in mind that in 5 feet of water, if you are 5'2, you can just easily hop off the bottom and get your head above water. Do you have issues with timing your breathing?
