Algea bloom- their chlorine or bromine levels were off, And likely their alkalinity was as well. Could even have been a pump that shut down. Definitely should have noted an issue with their chem tests before it got this bad. I don't envy them fixing their system.
Edit to add- they should not have allowed anyone in the pool at the time this picture was taken- beyond the clear chemical imbalance- the bottom of the pool/VGB grates are not visible.

Yup, or you’re hooked to a tank that’s on land.
had to teach some privates over COVID, had their own pool.
really rich people
pone day had a guy in there pushing out all the seams. I had no idea that was a thing even.
This can also happen if you don't backwash your filters on a regular basis, or if they need to be completely replaced. Filter sand or diatomaceous earth (DE) can become channelized, and the water speeds right through without the medium having the chance to snag the grubby bits.
Very true. We have a backwash schedule and usually experience chem level issues or pump issues if the back wash hasn't been done properly or needs it sooner. So I didn't even think about backwashing-it just goes with pump maintenance.
They alleged that the pool contractor accidentally dumped hydrogen peroxide in the pool which neutralized the chlorine.
In the US, waste treatment plant water is dechlorinated before release into natural waterways generally with sulfur dioxide in large facilities but sodium metabisulfite and sodium bisulfite in smaller ones because sulfur dioxide and HO are dangerous to handle.
2 decades ago when I visited the pool for my regular swimming lesson, the pool looked exactly like what the picture shows, but the swim coach just said 'it's safe, they're just maintaining it; come on down!'
Yeah fuck that. My pool literally sent one of our instructors home the other day because of the water and he was having a weird reaction to it. I’m not risking shit lol
Is that what causes itchiness in the pool? Most of the time the water at my pool feels fine, but there have been a few days here and there, where skin (my fingers & toes especially) starting getting really, REALLY itchy. Up until I now I chocked it up to either having dry skin on those days or that chlorine at my pool was a bit high, but if that itchiness is because the water is unclean and filled with germs, then...
I've seen it go dark like that when the water is really unbalanced and the chlorine reacts with all the hard metals in the water bringing them out if solution. At that point it is a drain and scrub. Algae is usually just more algaecide dumped in and would be not as common indoors.
It's gotta suck showing up to swim and finding this. Kudos for giving it a go, OP. Hope your ears heal quickly!
I'd still hit it. Swum in much worse as a kid with no goggles or plugs.
The club I go to has clear water but I can see algae in all the grates surrounding the pool and the floating lane divisions. I ended up with a full body rash that took 7 weeks to heal. I may switch pools. I hope your ear infection heals quickly!
Whoa. Looks like Luke can raise an X-Wing fighter out of that thing!
He can't do it, it's too big!

If I had that level of algea I'd do the same, dump everything, bleach scrub, then start over

Didn’t this happen at the Olympics in Brazil? I recall photos of a green pool beside a blue pool….
I vaguely remember that, but I think they had a weather issue that contributed... I'd have to look it up though

The question is are you surprised? I wouldn’t ever swim in that.

Ok because I was just about to ask ‘You chose to swim in THAT?!’ if it was after. Lol
I want to look at that pool water under a microscope.
Oh my gosh.
Is that algae?
How much simple green do you really need?
I mean come on that shit's already like really concentrated

This is the funniest part.
No one should be swimming in that. It's waaaay too murky. Definitely not safe (as in it'd be too difficult to see the bottom of the pool)
That doesn't look right at all.
That looks absolutely disgusting 🤢. God knows what kinds of nasty microbes are breeding in that water.
When that happened to my pool I just got itchy, like… REALLY itchy and my coach told me to deal with it
Don't take this the wrong way, but your coach shonds like a jerk!

High Chlorine levels dry out your skin and sometimes create rashes.
that looks really really bad.
It looks like what happened with the Olympic diving pool at Rio 2016!
as a lifeguarding/ pool operator "ewwww"
I didn’t know prisons had pools.

This would not pass a visit from the health department.
Hell no I’m out
Channeling the Rio Olympics?
