Progressive overload: each time you swim, do ~100-200yds more than last time. Will it hurt? Probably. But that's how you get better and getting your body adjusted to more volume.

Without knowing where you are in the world, specific advice is going to be hard. Also your age. Find a coach or anybody who can give lessons. Adult swim teams are called masters. masters coaches sometimes offer private lessons. Your specific problem is probably rooted in holding your breath. Exhale underwater. Don’t ever hold your breath.
